A Santa Cruz jury has awarded $1 million to Jacobs Farm, an organic farm whose edible herbs were contaminated by pesticides applied to vegetables on nearby farms.
Organophosphate pesticides evaporated after application and were then blown by wind onto the organic herbs, making it impossible for Jacobs Farm to sell significant portions of its 2006 and 2007 harvests of sage, rosemary and dill.

I HATE when they do that. Supermarket giants, Carrefour and Monoprix (110 stores in total) have announced a 2.5 ton recall of E-coli contaminated meat.
The thing is, they always wait until most of the meat has already been consumed (unless it was frozen by consumers). In any case, they really are evil.

Fifty-six human and veterinary pharmaceuticals have been detected in Philadelphia's drinking water. But there are no effective mandates to test, treat, limit or even advise the public about the problem
There are no national standards for how much of any pharmaceutical is too much in waterways or taps, and the FDA has never rejected a new drug based on environmental impact, although it is empowered to do so. The EPA claims that it is awaiting more survey data before considering action. However, of 287 pharmaceuticals on a draft list of contaminants to be considered for regulation, only one, nitroglycerin, was actually nominated -- which the EPA acknowledged was mainly because it can be used to make explosive as well as treat heart problems. Plants that cleanse sewage or drinking water are n

HENDERSON, Ky. (AP) -- Some western Kentucky school officials are disputing the data that shows Henderson, Union and Webster counties failed to make "adequate yearly progress."The districts are contesting what they say is inaccurate information released as part of "No Child Left Behind" program from the 2006-2007 academic year. District officials say there are many results turning up with blank or minimal scores even while it is certain that students took the tests.Superintendent Thomas Richey of the Henderson County school district said Wednesday "As far as I'm concerned, it's contaminated data."State Department of Education Spokeswoman Lisa Gross said some changes were made in core content standards that are affecting student scores. She added that there are always other issues that make it necessary for the state to deal with clean up and quality control. This friom WAVE TV.

DANYANG, China, May 21 — Chinese authorities are investigating whether two companies from this coastal region exported tainted toothpaste as more contaminated product, including some made for children, has turned up in Latin America.
A team of government investigators arrived here Sunday afternoon and closed the factory of the Danyang City Success Household Chemical Company, a small building housing about 30 workers in a nearby village, according to villagers and one factory worker. The government also questioned the manager of another toothpaste maker, Goldcredit International Trading, which is in Wuxi, about an hour’s drive southeast of here.
No tainted toothpaste has been found in the United States, but a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that the agency would be taking “a hard look” at whether to issue an import alert.

From KSEE24 News in California:
May 21, 2007 - Dog owners are being warned about a batch of possibly contaminated food, sold at a Visalia Costco around mid-April, after at least four dogs fell ill.
Two of the dogs who became sick, a nine-year-old chocolate lab named Bob and his 1 1/2-year-old adopted sister, Pearl, have been staying at the Lone Oak Pet Clinic in Visalia, since May 11, after they began throwing up.
“We took them in… and her kidney was 80 percent shutdown,” said owner Ken Womack.
The dogs are being fed through intravenous tubes and are regaining their strength, but their struggle doesn’t seem to be isolated.
Two other dogs apparently came in earlier with the same symptoms.
Veterinarian Dr. Matt Humason says “We began asking questions…we found the dogs all ate the same food from the same store at the same time… so we sent a sample to get it tested and it came back positive with melamine.”
All four dogs ate Nutra Nuggets brand food.

Well, I'm an Eastern Washington baby, born and raised in the downwind nuclear shadow of Hanford, so this kind of stuff hits especially close to home. If you think humans only suffer injury or death when a plant melts down or a bomb goes boom, think again. Isn't reproduction a freedom and a right to be protected at all costs? Shouldn't the health risks to pregnant women and small children, when coupled with the environmental costs and wreckage, be enough to convince people that nuclear energy is not even remotely safe and we should perhaps find better ways of reducing energy consumption rather than increasing energy production? Anyway, here's a bunch of terrible news on uranium mining in other countries and on Native American reservations, depleted uranium, radioactive breast milk, birth defects in infants due to radiation sickness acquired by their mother from working in nuclear power plants, Hanford's Environmental Impact Statement ... you know, some of that dark underbelly we do
No U.S. news service is carrying this story, yet… but South Africa has the answer. What should be done with all of this contaminated food? It should be burned. Hopefully, these pet stores and grocery stores will catch on to this. DO NOT PUT IT INTO DUMPSTERS. We do not want Melamine to contaminate water or to kill animals who may forage.

Not long after I posted yesterdays ultra topical cartoon, news breaks that silicon is now the chief suspect in the contaminated fuel story.
So I have revised the cartoon, to reflect the new facts.
This will be the last fuel contamination cartoon.
