One week ago I was sitting at work and noticed my throat was feeling a bit scratchy. An event that happened two months ago still bothers me today. And now that I have this blog, I want to bring it up again. A common misconception/fear about K's illness is that it's contagious. I'll say it now, Cystic Fibrosis is NOT contagious! It's a genetic disorder. Two carriers have to come together to create one full CF baby. You can't get it by casual transmission. This still bothers me today. Because two months ago M had her speech therapy session at the park (the therapists idea). Harvard researchers suggest that obesity may be socially contagious, “spreading” through social ties, as thin and overweight people tend to cluster together.
The data on more than 12,000 people, collected over 32 years, suggests that your odds of becoming obese increases by 57 percent if you have a friend who is obese, by 40 percent if you have an obese sibling, and by 37 percent if your spouse is obese.
“What appears to be happening is that a person becoming obese most likely causes a change of norms about what counts as an appropriate body size,” said one of the study’s authors, professor Nicholas Christakis.
Some believe this may account for why it has been so difficult to treat the epidemic of obesity, as each person is treated individually, rather than treating the entire social network.

A while back, we covered a candy called Candy Virus and now, as part of the “Sentimental Objects in Attempts to Befriend a Virus” series, some creative folks crafted chocolate truffles into replicas of the molecular structure of the Hepatitis-C virus. The candies don’t actually carry the virus, but they’re a little creepy and definitely can start a conversation about Hep-C, an infectious blood-borne virus that brings about serious liver trouble.
I’m all for artistic candy—especially if it brings attention to an interesting subject, and the Hep-C candy is one of the coolest projects I’ve seen in a long time.

Sort of contagious. You see, there are a lot of symptomatic behaviors that are subject to imitation. Drug abuse, cutting, suicidal behavior and eating disorders are just a few examples. When like minded people get together, they inspire imitative behavior in each other. It is unlikely that they are sharing the behavior in each other's presence, but they are seruptitiously comparing notes.
Therapists are very much aware of this potential for contagion. They do what they can to minimize the chance it will happen.
