      Is Bisexuality Contagious
I mentioned in a previous article that it seems like a lot more people are coming out as bisexual. And that’s a good thing, but I realise that there are a lot of people still out there who think, that people are “choosing” to be bisexual because they think it’s cool. And that bisexuality like [...]

AGRICULTURE: Bush Admin. seeks to move highly contagious animal disease laboratory from isolated Plum Island, NY to the mainland near livestock herds
If it isn't broke, don't fix itThe Bush Administration wants to move a laboratory that until 2003 was managed by the Agriculture Department. The laboratory studies the highly contagious foot-and-mouth virus. The Homeland Security Department now runs the Plum Island facility and wants to move the laboratory from the isolated island to the United States mainland where exposure to livestock would be catastrophic to the agriculture industry. A United Kingdom government laboratory was blamed for a recent £80m foot-and-mouth disease outbreak so the risk is real. The Bush Administration has consistently illustrated clumsiness, ineptness and incompetence so why should their decision on such a risky issue be trusted now? The costs and risks from a possible outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease a

"Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success." -Dr. Joyce Brothers, American Psychologist and Advice Columnist, Dr. Joyce Brothers books, CDs, DVDs//How is your self-image? What about your self-talk? Do you think of yourself as a success in life, either at work or in your relationships? The way you see yourself has a direct impact on the way others perceive you. As Dr. Brothers says, "If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success." The fact is that your behavior follows your thoughts. Whether it is currently true or not, you must believe in something first, before you are able obtain it. So, what does it mean to "think" of yourself as a success? First, you have to know what success looks like in an objective sense, which may mean

      Is Fat Contagious??
Last night on Boston Legal (one of my favorite shows!), Denny Crane got sued by a lawyer who he fired for being fat. Every time he nonchalantly referred to her as FAT, I cringed. This sweet but pudgy character didn’t flinch at hurling insult after insult as facts that gave him license to be verbally abusive. The fat insulting the fatter! Many people have no conscience about attacking the dignity of those who are overweight! Boston Legal is a TV show—fiction—but it illustrates the attitudes that some people can have. Denny chucked fat statements at the overweight lawyer, as she said, “ka-ching, ka-ching.” She and her lawyer sued him, expecting a big settlement. After all, firing someone for being fat is discrimination, right? Wrong! The Denny Crane character got off the hook by using the excuse that he didn’t want to catch her fat. Outrageous!?!? YES! He argued that fat is contagious and he felt it harmful to let her be in his law firm. You might think that the writers took

No news mean no contagious bacteria?
Why won’t my doctor’s office tell me the results of my throat culture? I just don’t get it. One week ago I was sitting at work and noticed my throat was feeling a bit scratchy. By the next morning I was speaking with that sexy, throaty voice that Honey loves to hear but means that my lips are off limits unless he want to get sick too. Thinking it was just a cold I went about my day as usual, drinking lots of hot tea with honey and lemon. Later in the afternoon as I headed through the hallways to relieve the pressure building up in my bladder yet again I overheard some people talking about how quiet it was in the office with so many people out sick. And they all were home sick because of strep throat. Uh, oh! By evening I was feeling awful. My body ached. My head throbbed. My throat was bright red and felt like it was on fire. Yet I had no other cold-like symptoms. My sinuses were fine and the only time I coughed was if I had irritated my throat too much. So

      It's not contagious!
An event that happened two months ago still bothers me today. And now that I have this blog, I want to bring it up again. A common misconception/fear about K's illness is that it's contagious. I'll say it now, Cystic Fibrosis is NOT contagious! It's a genetic disorder. Two carriers have to come together to create one full CF baby. You can't get it by casual transmission. This still bothers me today. Because two months ago M had her speech therapy session at the park (the therapists idea). While she was playing with her ST, I took K around and let her play, etc. I put her in a baby swing and was swinging her gently. Another mom with a baby a bit younger, but quite a bit bigger than K got on the swing next to me.We talked for 10-15 minutes, swinging our girls. It was a nice conversation. We laughed, we went through how we became SAHM's, our "surprise" babies...it was nice. I was thinking that she was so nice, and we seemed to have a bit in common. Then she mentioned

Getting Rich Is Contagious -- So Catch the Bug
Getting Rich Is Contagious -- So Catch the BugOne of the summer's biggest stories carried the headline "Weight Gain Is Contagious!" Sensational? Sure, but based on some pretty good science. The report, originally published in the New England Journal of Medicine, emerged from a landmark study that has followed a social network of more than 12,000 people since 1971. The researchers have enough data to know which subjects are friends, neighbors, relatives or co-workers.That's how they were able to see that when one person packs on or takes off the pounds, his or her close associates - whether they live around the corner or on the opposite coast - are likely to do the same. The link makes a lot of sense, says Karen Miller-Kovach, the chief scientist at Weight Watchers."Social networks determine social norms and social behavior," she says. "What's acceptable, what's not acceptable. I expect we'll see a lot of parallels in other fields."Money among them. Academics and other researchers wh

US subprime turbulence may be contagious -Stiglitz
SINGAPORE, Aug 2 - The turbulence in the U.S. subprime mortgage market could spread to other sectors of the economy, especially as growth momentum is already weak, Joseph Stiglitz, former chief economist of the World Bank, said on Thursday.Financial markets have been volatile in recent weeks amid jitters about the fallout from the problems with U.S. subprime mortgages, but Stiglitz said the turmoil was no surprise to him.The risks could spread to sectors "wider than the subprime, but how wide is difficult to tell. It's a broad problem", Stiglitz, a Nobel laureate economist and Columbia University professor, told Reuters in Singapore."It's very hard to predict the stock markets, but in terms of the underlying weakness of the U.S. economy, that's going to continue for an extended period of time," he said."It's a constant source of wonder to me how the market is irrational about certain things that seem so forecastable."Stiglitz told a financial forum that a stronger Chinese yuan woul

      Is Obesity Contagious?
Harvard researchers suggest that obesity may be socially contagious, “spreading” through social ties, as thin and overweight people tend to cluster together. The data on more than 12,000 people, collected over 32 years, suggests that your odds of becoming obese increases by 57 percent if you have a friend who is obese, by 40 percent if you have an obese sibling, and by 37 percent if your spouse is obese. “What appears to be happening is that a person becoming obese most likely causes a change of norms about what counts as an appropriate body size,” said one of the study’s authors, professor Nicholas Christakis. Some believe this may account for why it has been so difficult to treat the epidemic of obesity, as each person is treated individually, rather than treating the entire social network. Other experts are still skeptical. Professor Andrew Hill of the University of Leeds believe it’s purely speculation to suggest people adopt a new body image simply because their friend

Study Finds Obesity is Socially Contagious
According to a recent New England Journal of Medicine study funded by the National Institute on Aging, obesity is "socially contagious" and can spread easily from person to person.   The study found that social ties seem to play a strong role in obesity, even more than genes.  The chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend is obese, 40 percent if a sibling is obese and 37 percent if a spouse is obese. In the closest friendships, the risk almost tripled. This may explain why men gain weight when their pregnant wives or girlfriends gain weight.

New Study Wastes Tax Dollars to Determine that Obesity Is 'Socially Contagious'
Add to you list of government waste and worthless studies: Social Scientists have determined that being friends with fat people makes you fat. So, I guess the scientists' most logical solution is to pick on the fat kids to prevent future heart attacks. I should thank the government for taking money from my paycheck to pay these pathetic scientific posers.First of all, it is about time that the liberals in this Country make a decision. Either we are a poor Country, or we are an obese Country. We cannot have both. We are the only civilization in the history of the world where our poor people can eat so much that they become obese. I am sure that the starving North Korean citizen who literally has no food to eat only wished he had such a problem. If anything, this study demonstrates that it is our government that is overfed, not the people. How is it that liberals claim we have no money to fund their programs, but we can afford ridiculous studies like this? I have a solution for t

Chocolate Hepatitis-C - Tasty, But Not Contagious
A while back, we covered a candy called Candy Virus and now, as part of the “Sentimental Objects in Attempts to Befriend a Virus” series, some creative folks crafted chocolate truffles into replicas of the molecular structure of the Hepatitis-C virus. The candies don’t actually carry the virus, but they’re a little creepy and definitely can start a conversation about Hep-C, an infectious blood-borne virus that brings about serious liver trouble. I’m all for artistic candy—especially if it brings attention to an interesting subject, and the Hep-C candy is one of the coolest projects I’ve seen in a long time. Eating Disorders Contagious?
Sort of contagious. You see, there are a lot of symptomatic behaviors that are subject to imitation. Drug abuse, cutting, suicidal behavior and eating disorders are just a few examples. When like minded people get together, they inspire imitative behavior in each other. It is unlikely that they are sharing the behavior in each other's presence, but they are seruptitiously comparing notes. Therapists are very much aware of this potential for contagion. They do what they can to minimize the chance it will happen. If you know of such imitation going on in a therapy experience, be sure you let the therapist know immediately. Thanks to the heads up and link from The Corpus Callosum. Here is a excerpt from his blog. There is also a link to the study abstract. According to a study published in the medical journal, Pediatrics, girls and young women who visit eating disorder oriented websites may be harmed by the activity. The funny thing is, is does not matter if the sites encourage eatin

Then she picks Suzie, who says, "The atmosphere was contagious," and the teacher says, "Excellent, Suzie!"Then she notices that little Johnny has his hand up, at the back of the class. "Yes Johnny?" she says.Johnny says, "The other day, me and my dad's a-sittin around, and we saw our blonde neighbor painting her fence.
