Consumer Debt Increases By More Than Double Estimates
Consumer debt (excluding home loans) increased by $15.3 billion in March over the previous month, according to a report released by the Federal Reserve. Analysts had only been predicting around a $6 billion increase, so the news came as quite a surprise. The fact that Americans are borrowing and continuing to spend is good news for the economy in the immediate future, but for the long term, the implications aren’t as good. Let’s look at some of the causes of the debt hike and then the potential implications. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why Americans are getting further in debt, but here are a couple quotes: Americans have had to go into debt to maintain their existing lifestyles, Gail Cunningham, spokeswoman for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, sa

Dealing with a Bad Consumer product review
A consumer product review is a vital part of ensuring the quality of a product. After all, who knows more about how it really works than the people who buy it? A consumer product review can be an invaluable asset when it comes to selling products and services. A customer recommendation will go a long way toward helping endorse a product and make it appealing to other consumers. On the other hand, a bad consumer product review can bring sales to a screeching halt. It's fear of a bad consumer product review that inspires many sites to remove product reviews from their web pages altogether. If consumers don't have a chance to express their opinion, they won't have the chance to give a bad product review. The problem with that logic is that consumers may assume sites that don't include a cons

A consumer product review can be a tremendous tool when it comes to helping you build your sales, but it doesn't do you much good if you can't convince any of your consumers to leave one when they go! Allowing your consumer product review to work for you requires you to have consumers that are willing to take that extra five minutes out of their day to let you know what they really think. Here's how you can convince them it's worth their time and effort: 1) Offer a small discount on their next purchase to consumers who fill out a consumer product review after they have received their product. This is guaranteed to bring you the results you want-who can say no to saving money? Just remember to keep the discounts within the limits you can afford. 'Really bad': April consumer confidence lowest since '82
NEW YORK (Reuters) — Consumer confidence fell to its lowest in more than 25 years in early April, diving deeper into recessionary territory on heightened worries over inflation and jobs, a survey showed Friday. The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers said its preliminary index of confidence fell to 63.2 in April from 69.5 in March, well below economists' median expectation of a slight fall to 69.0, according to a Reuters poll. The April result is the lowest since March 1982's level of 62.0, when the "stagflationary" period of low growth and high inflation was still fresh in the memory of many Americans.Near-term inflation expectations measured by the survey jumped to the highest since the turmoil after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in late 1990, which caused oil prices to rise

Consumer prices up 0.3% in March; housing starts plunge
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Consumer prices rose a less-than-expected 0.3% in March, leaving the Federal Reserve some room to lower interest rates to ward off a housing-led slowdown, and the construction of new homes plunged in March to the lowest level in 17 years, according to reports Wednesday. While the slide in the housing sector continued, industrial production unexpectedly rebounded as utilities raised output due to colder weather, according to the Fed, making up for weak manufacturing growth. And a fourth report showed that higher prices and rising unemployment resulted in falling wages in March. After adjusting for inflation, average weekly earnings for non-supervisory employees dropped 1% last month, compared to the same period a year ago. It was the sixth month that inflation-adjuste

The Consumer Price Index, commonly known by its abbreviation, CPI, is compiled and published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), using price data obtained from an elaborate survey of 25,000 retail outlets and quantity data generated by the Consumer Expenditures Survey. The CPI is unquestionably one of the most widely recognized macroeconomic price indexes, running second only to the Dow Jones Averages in the price index popularity contest. It is used not only as an indicator of the price level and inflation, but also to convert nominal economic indicators to real terms and to adjust wage and income payments (such as Social Security) for i

Strong consumer demand should help boost revenues
Growth in consumer spends and value generated by price hikes are expected to deliver steady growth for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies in the quarter ended March, 2008. The year-on-year average growth in the operating profit growth could be around 18 per cent on a net sales growth about 15 per cent while the net profit is expected to be about 20 per cent. The better performers in the FMCG space could be Nestle and Godrej Consumer: the former is expected to post the highest growth in net sales over around 17 cent whiel the latter Godrej is expected to post the highest growth in net profit at 40 per cent. Both these firms should benefit from margin expansion resulting from price hikes taken by them to offset cost increases. ITC may well post a decline in volumes growth due to

      Overdue Consumer Debt Skyrockets
By: Roshawn WatsonAccording to the American Banking Association’s quarterly survey, consumers fell behind on their debt at the highest rate since 1992. Across all eight loan categories tracked, payments that are at least 30 days past due increased, reflecting the immense economic stress consumers currently face. Leading the pack was late car loan payments, which make up two-thirds of consumer loans with fixed balances. Consumers over-borrowed because they assumed that home prices would continue to rise.As the value of homes continues to depreciate, the implications are broadly felt. Banks are taking steps to protect themselves. For example, some banks are now… • no longer issuing subprime home equity loans• requiring home buyers put down larger down-payments and prove their income
