      An Open Letter To Conservatives
The more and more I see about Obama the worse and worse I fear for the future of this country should he get elected. I am seriously bothered by so many conservatives I hear saying that they will not vote for McCain in November and so will either sit out or vote Losertarian. This is so damaging to the party and to the country. Yes, McCain is not the ideal Ronald Reagan conservative we all want, oh

Conservatives on the Post Office trail...
Otherwise engaged with the Lib Dems over at the station end of town, I couldn't get over to see Edward Timpson's (Conservative) visit to Coppenhall this morning. He and Alan Duncan (shadow business secretary) were over at the North Street Post Office (near the Cross Keys roundabout) highlighting the need to retain these local outlets. It's a valid cause that many feel passionate about. Timpson seems to be trying to tackle some of the core issues and he has pounded the pavements. Plenty of mud-slinging and insults, but he is perhaps the more local of the candidates. I'm hoping to get a profile piece done over few days. Have you met the Conservative candidate recently? Are his (and his party's) policies in line with what Crewe and Nantwich want and need?

GREEN CONSERVATISM: The mechanism for conservatives to be relevant in the environmental debate
Recently I read an article by Whit Ayres: “Let’s Get Right into the Debate.” Basically, the article polarizes or politicizes environmentalism and champions green conservatism while demonizing liberal environmentalism. Personally, I believe it is dangerous to politicize environmentalism because environmentalism at its core is not to be politicized. Politicization demands benefit to politics or a political ideology or system and not towards the environment or Nature. Of course, there is political ecology but political ecology focuses on how behaviors of individuals living within a political system influence environmental issues and the landscape.I also believe that green conservatives are stealing elements of environmentalism like market-based mechanisms and making them their own.

Unfortunately the Ron Paul movement increasingly seems to be one of fringe groups such as white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and conspiracy theorists who have little understanding of libertarian philosophy or economic beliefs. As a result it now appears that conservatives have a better understanding of economics than many Paul supporters, at least with regards to the consequences of earmarks. In the recent past I’ve had disagreements with Paul supporters who defended Paul’s support for earmarks to benefit his Congressional district. Many of his supporters argued that the earmarks did not contribute to increasing government spending as the funds were already appropriated. Conservative blogger Ed Morrissey pr

When it wasn't just about grabbing and holding onto power, it was about principles. It was about honoring core beliefs. In 1960, Barry Goldwater took up in his hands the remnants of America's original and long lost tradition when he wrote:"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. It came as no surprise to review the conservative blogs and see them attempt to use this as evidence against Democratic health care plans. Some call this evidence against a single payer plan, but a single payer plan and a government run plan are two separate things. A government run plan is one form of a single payer plan, but is quite different from the plans advocated by most proponents of single payer plans in this country who advocate plans such as extending Medicare where health care is still provided by private doctors and hospitals. Of the Democratic candidates running this year, only Dennis Kucinich has been pushing a single payer plan, and this plan is nothing like the British government-run plan. Now that republicans have made sure that children don't have access to health care and farmers don't have a sufficient labor force to harvest their crops, the "conservatives" have moved on to important things like chastising presidential candidates for not wearing tacky American flag pins on their lapels and declaring Google "unamerican". To celebrate the anniversary of Sputnik, Google did the unthinkable and created a special Google logo for the day. Fifty years ago we were in a cold war and space race with the USSR. Allegedly, we are not enemies and we aren't supposed to hate the Russians anymore. I guess some of these old dinosaurs didn't get the memo. Not to mention the fact, that the Russians did us a favor by launching Sputnik because it put our space program into high gear. Sometimes you need a kick in the pants when you are trying to get to the moon. Besides, whoever said that space belongs to America? And in all fairness Google also commemorated the anniversary of

Buy raunchy underwear from the Conservatives?
West Sussex, UK, August 2007: The conservative representative for Crawley Borough Council’s Ifield ward runs an online lingerie website selling adult costumes. Daniel Kavanagh, 21, has met with disapproval for his ‘labour’s from fellow councillors who call his enterprise ’unseemly’ and believe it may have a negative effect on the local authority. Mr Kavanagh claims that his sexy sideline doesn’t influence his council work. In response to the criticism he has, however, recently removed certain items from his website, including a schoolgirl uniform and a newspaper delivery-girl costume. How very ‘conservative’! Mr Kavanagh says he doesn’t sell anything you can’t buy in Ann Summers which seems very ‘liberal’ of him. The Crawley Labour councillor, Stephen Joyce, responded: ”I’m not saying what he is doing is illegal or anything like that, but it’s unseemly.” Daniel Kavanagh’s website was ’down for maintenance’ but now appe

Christian Conservatives Consider Third Party Candidate
In an interesting twist, a large coalition of Christian conservatives met in Salt Lake City to discuss a possible third-party candidate if Giuliani is their nominee. Let's take a look at what could happen as a result.1. The first conclusion is obvious: Giuliani will win the nomination, but the Democratic nominee will easily win the presidency because the normally Republican votes will be split by the third party candidate.2. This effort on the part of these conservatives will scare the Republicans enough to vote for somebody other than Giuliani in the primaries, thus perhaps achieving the coalition's real goal of both getting rid of Giuliani and having a shot at the White House in 2008, though they may be disappointed if Romney is the alternative.People don't seem to consider the second possibility.

Conservatives Threaten Third Party If Giuliani Wins Republican Nomination
Michael Scherer reports that many on the religious right are considering a third party campaign should a pro-abortion rights candidate such as Rudy Giuliani win the Republican nomination. This leaves many liberals thrilled with the idea of an easy win, while some liberals such as Ron Beasley are also looking for an independent alternative to the Democratic candidates. I don’t have much hope that this will have a lasting impact. Assuming the Democrats stay away from fringe candidates such as Kucinich, Gravel, and increasingly John Edwards, they should win in 2008 regardless of what the Republicans do. The conservative wing of the Republican Party has intermittently played with challenges to the Republican Party in the past, but this rarely goes anywhere as they realize they have a greater chance for electoral success by concentrating on fighting for control of the GOP. On paper a Giuliani Republican Party looks good and I might support a socially liberal Republican over many Democ

Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Invited to Speak at Columbia University: No Conservatives Allowed
Liberals seem to think that it benefits their academic environment by allowing dictators and tyrants to speak at their Universities. Yet, while they proclaim themselves as champions of free speech, they so quickly forget how intolerant they are when that speech is Conservative. Just this year, the MinuteMan Project (an organization that is anti illegal immigration) were stormed by protestors before they even had a chance to speak. They were even physically threatened and had to leave. Lee Bollinger refused to reprimand any of the students. Had it been a liberal speaker on stage, someone surely would have pulled out the taser. In all seriousness, it was an absolute embarrassment that Colombia University breached its duty to protect Conservative guests who speak at its University. It is also relevant that the MinuteMan Project is on the same ideological side as 80%+ of Americans. Nevertheless, these types of violent protests are common all over the Country.People like Ann Coulter,

The Yellow Sheet changes name to The Red Sheet in attempt to trick conservatives
In an attempt to win over conservatives, The Yellow Sheet has decided to change its name to The Red Sheet. While there will be no change in the actual content of the report, the publishers hope that slapping the color red on their product will help give the impression of conservatism.“We were originally going to go with The Purple Report, you know, as a mixture of red and blue,” said Ginger Lamb, Vice President & Publisher of the Arizona Capitol Times, “But the conservatives we talked to kept complaining about how much blue was in the purple.”Since the change in ownership of the Arizona Capitol Times, many conservatives have claimed that the newspaper has taken a liberal turn. Political Betting asks whether Gordon Brown's 'theft' of policies will damage his reputation and image amongst the media and the general public:It struck me while re-watching this on the net a couple of night’s ago that something significant was happening. That the standard Brown approach of closing down debates by stealing popular policies from his opponents might not be so easy in the future. The notion of Gord the policy thief is starting to gain credence. We saw that line being used by the Sun in its editorial on the inheritance tax plan and increasingly commentators are making the same observation. For once people have noticed what you are doing then it is much harder to do it. The Brown government might need to be a lot more subtle in the language it uses. The key question should not be whether Brown 'steals' policies, but whether this is a bad or unusual thing. All parties 'steal' policy ideas from somewhere. Liberals Read More Than Conservatives
An AP-Ipsos poll found that liberals read more than conservatives: The AP-Ipsos poll found 22 percent of liberals and moderates said they had not read a book within the past year, compared with 34 percent of conservatives. Among those who had read at least one book, liberals typically read nine books in the year, with half reading more than that and half less. Conservatives typically read eight, moderates five. By slightly wider margins, Democrats tended to read more books than Republicans and independents. There were no differences by political party in the percentage of those who said they had not read at least one book. The head of a book publishing industry trade organization offered one explanation: “The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans: ‘No, don’t raise my taxes, no new taxes,’” Pat Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, said in a recent interview. “It’s pretty hard

“Mr. Conservative” Became a Liberal Compared to Today’s Conservatives
In several previous posts, including at the time of the release of the documentary Mr. Conservative, I’ve noted the irony that the modern conservative movement has moved so far to the right that Barry Goldwater ultimately considered himself a liberal. As Barry Goldwater was mentioned in a recent post, and the conversion of the conservative movement to an authoritarian mind set became a major topic in the comments, I noted with interest that another blogger was discussing Goldwater. Jim Lippard viewed Mr. Conservative and had some observations similar to those in my previous posts on Goldwater: In his later life, he was outspoken in his support for a woman’s right to abortion, for gays to serve in the military, and for the religious right to stop pushing their religious views into politics. The film reveals that he supported his daughter obtaining an abortion before Roe v. Wade, and that he has a gay grandson. Several of the more liberal interviewees say that they thought Go

      Conservatives Taking Climate Change Seriously
There are two reports today on different conservatives taking the problem of global warming seriously. Former Bush speech writer Michael Gerson has a flawed column in The Washington Post but it is significant for at least admitting that there is a problem. While he returns to partisanship in claiming “Hysteria on the environment is a liberal temptation” he also admits that in some areas liberals have been right. David Roberts goes further into the problems with Gerson’s column. Fortune reports on a surprising crusader against global warming–Rupert Murdoch: …Murdoch has boldly promised to make News Corp. carbon neutral by 2010 and to weave environmental issues and themes into his newspapers, TV shows, movies and online properties - a tricky business, particularly when it comes to news. “Climate change poses clear, catastrophic threats,” Murdoch said last spring, in a speech webcast to all News Corp. employees (and available here.) “We may

Conservatives - could they run a jumble sale?
I switched on 'The World at One' this lunch time and caught the tale end of the sorry saga of the Ealing Southall by-election. The burning issue was who had asked for the tag line 'David Cameron's Conservatives' on the ballot paper. It was a highly entertaining set of interviews by the BBC, listening to a range of Conservative activists and officials all deny all knowledge. Yes, it really must have been an act of God, because no body in charge in the Conservatives (possibly an oxymoronic notion) was prepared to put their hand up.It seems obvious to me that somebody must have signed a form saying, in effect, this is the wording we want. They might have just been a junior amanuensis, but that person must either take personal responsibility or be able to say who told them the words to write ... and so on up the chain of responsibility.Whatever you might think of the pros and cons of the tag-line itself, one of two things are clear - and both of them say that the Conservative leader

It is about time Conservatives stop making excuses for Alberto Gonzales. He is an abject failure as an Attorney General, and has demonstrated that he clearly was not running anything anyway. As much as it is hard for a libertarian like me to praise John Ashcroft, I think it is that time. At least Ashcroft would not have allowed things to get this bad. In fact, I think Alberto Gonzales may be too incompetent to be impeached; he just is too clueless to commit a “High Crime and Misdemeanor.”Pathetically, Alberto Gonzalez managed to turn multiple non-scandals into major catastrophes. For example, when the United States Attorneys were fired, there was speculation as to whether or not the firing was political. Had Gonzales simply said, “President Bush can fire anyone he wants in the Executive Branch for whatever reason because the Constitution makes him the head of the Executive branch,” there would have been no scandal.
