From NPR's Morning Edition:But one community has not had to worry. Nearly two decades ago, Clayton County began building a unique water treatment system that includes wetlands and reservoirs."I like to say it's raining everyday in Clayton County because we're putting right now about 10 million gallons back in our water supply," says Mike Thomas, general manager of the Clayton County Water Authority.Thomas says the reservoirs here are full and have never been in danger of being too low. That's because back in the 1980s, folks realized there wasn't enough water to support the growt

Seemingly insignificant species of bugs, drab birds, frogs or worms do not often make the front pages of the New York Times. We might perceive these species as being insignificant and not worthy of listing or protection on the Endangered Species Act. However, these species may be very important and function as indicator species to ecosystem health or our own health or as keystone species that are the foundation of whole complex ecosystems. These drab, small or ugly species are often overshadowed by the larger, cuddlier and prettier flagship species. Flagship species are often used to raise awareness for nature conservation because they are attractive but this focus can translate into narrow conservation initiatives and studies that forget the others and risk them to extinction. However, a
We all love beautiful, lush green lawns, but we also need water to sustain life. ABQjournal Business: Change in State Law Makes Conservation Easements More Attractive to Smaller Landowners: "New Mexico ranchers now have a way to cash in on their land without selling it. They can put it into a state conservation program, then sell the resulting state tax credit to pay off debt or buy new equipment.Since 2004, the state has dangled tax credits as its main incentive for ranchers and other landowners to put land into conservation easements, which restrict the land's development potential."Albuquerque Real Estate Rio Rancho Real Estate News Albuquerque Real Estate News
Yesterday Peru's President Allan Garcia and Minister of Production Rafael Rey finalized a Presidential Order that decommercializes marlins and sailfish - no further commercial harvest or sale will be allowed - and begins a national commitment to ocean conservation and the development of a sustainable sportfishing tourism industry. The plan will allow only catch-and-release recreational fishing and an allowance for world record attempts will be crafted in the near future. TBF President Ellen Peel and Chief Scientist Russell Nelson met with the Garcia and Rey to observe the signing and make a commitment to continued TBF scientific support for Peru's visionary fisheries conservation and development project. For the longest time, I had been wanting to adopt a pawikan or sea turtle. It took quite a while for me to find the contact number of the Pawikan Conservation Center in Morong, Bataan. And when I finally did, they said there were no pawikan scheduled to hatch yesterday. But they also told me that if it was warm and sunny, some of the turtles would hatch earlier than expected.Since it's quite far, and I didn't want to risk disappointment, I decided to watch the longest Holy Week procession in the country in Baliuag, Bulacan in the evening. But I got a surprise text yesterday morning from the Pawikan Center saying that sea turtles had just hatched the night before and were ready for adoption. Since it's difficult to time a visit when there are hatchlings, I decided to rush there no questions
An interesting case: A project in South Africa run by an animal conservation charity is trying to save the South China Tiger by creating an environment where they can learn to hunt, and other survival skills. A laudable cause, but where it gets controversial is that in order for the tigers to learn hunting and other predatory skills, they are provided with live animals to hunt and kill, from chickens for the tiger cubs to blesbok, a kind of antelope, for the adults. The SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) is appalled at such a practice and is howling their righteous indignation. “It is a spurious argument that carnivores need to be fed animals, live. Not in captivity they don’t!,” the SPCA, which regards the practice as cruel, says. And you thought all roads

By Siobhan Devine - UPI Correspondent UPI - Feb. 22, 2008 Original URL WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The success of China's amended Energy Conservation Law, which goes into effect this April with stronger regulations for transportation and construction, and improved administrative oversight, remains dubious and depends on the nature of its implementation and enforcement. "I think they've made considerable progress. I see a real focus in this revised law on administration and supervision," said Barbara Finamore, director of the China Clean Energy project at the National Resource Defense Council and founder and board member of the China-U.S. Energy Efficiency Alliance. In the struggle to sustain the earth's environment for the future generations, environmental studies have so far left unexplored the role of religion. But the human ecology is deeply conditioned by religious beliefs about our nature and destiny. Religious views and practices mould our attitude towards the relations with material life as well as help us to reappraise our ways apart from reorienting ourselves towards the resources of life.If we examine the ecological underpinning & implications of Hinduism both in principal and practice, it would be a new field of study in religion. From the Rigveda to Bhagavadgita and the Ramayana to Gandhian ideals and contemporary issues from forest in the epic to sacred rivers Yamuna, Ganga and Narmada – Hinduism and ecology offers a wealth of perceptions on the way in which Hinduism and ecological issues are enmeshed.Hinduism can be given a legitimate -- `Sanatandharma' which means `the eternal essence of life'. This essence of life is not
Here is a great documentary about energy conservation: Kilowatt Ours. The first half is about coal and its harmful side effects. More than half of America's electricity is generated by coal. The second part which is about energy conservation and alternative energy sources is an uplifting contrast to the first part. Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a tv for more than three hours?
In an effort to tackle the enviromental issue of Japan plowing through and estimated 25 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks each year, Triumph unveils the “MY Chopsticks Bra”. As Japanese consumers are becoming more aware of the negative impact that disposable chopsticks have on the environment, 25 billion pairs equates to roughly 90,000 tons, innovative ways to improve the ever increasing problem are being developed. Those numbers equates to approximately 200 pairs of chopsticks per person every year.
Triumph lingerie model Yuko Ishida, who ordinarily carries around a pair of her own chopsticks, says she hopes people think of the environment when they see this bra, adding that “the chopsticks on the sides help add a little extra volume to your bust.”
The “My Chopsticks Bra,” which features a pair of cups that resemble bowls of rice and miso soup, and a set of collapsible chopsticks that tuck into either side is the latest addition to Triumph’s line of concept ling

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Indonesia has declared a protected forest in Mount Lumut in Barito Utara (Barut) district in Central Kalimantan a conservation area for Heart of Borneo (HoB) program, a local official has said. The protected forest in Mt. Lumut which covered 25,802 ha-land was considered a sacred place by native Dayak Hindu Kaharingan community. Thus, the WWF-Indonesia regarded that it should be turned into a conservation area, local environmental management and spatial arrangement office head Akhmad Yani said here Wednesday. Dayak Hindu Kaharingan people are native inhabitants in Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. The administration has suggested a national park status for the protected forest which is really rich in flora and fauna. The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) launched a study on the forest and planned to recommend a world natural heritage for the forest as well.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
UF comes out on top, but USF lags behind, in the second annual report card on sustainability and other "green" conservation efforts at public and private universities across the United States.
The College Sustainability report from the Sustainable Endowments Institute gives UF a B minus overall, lauding President Bernie Machen's leadership in minimizing UF's impact on the environment. UF is drafting plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, and has several "green buildings" with plans for dozens more. Staff and students ride the bus, walk and carpool rather than drive alone, and UF offers low-emissions vehicles for hourly rental.
UF's B came mostly because its endowment and investments don't reflect its conservation priorities, according to the report.
USF got a D, with Fs in the green building, transportation, conservation and leadership categories. Food and recycling got a D because the dining services "does not offer any notable amount of local or organic food."

Hunters and fishermen played a vital role in preserving our natural wildlife over 100 years ago.
Led by fellow sportsman President Theodore Roosevelt, these early conservationists called for the first laws restricting the commercial slaughter of wildlife. They urged sustainable use of fish and game, created hunting and fishing licenses, and lobbied for taxes on sporting equipment to provide funds for state conservation agencies. These actions were the foundation of the North American wildlife conservation model, a science-based, user-pay system that would foster the most dramatic conservation successes of all time. National Hunting and Fishing Day
Today, however, there are not nearly so many hunters and fishermen. Americans have turned to wildlife viewing, rather than wildlife hunting. These “non-consumptive” visitors come to public lands in increasing numbers to view the diverse wildlife, but often do not pay for the upkeep of these lands. Hunters and fishermen pay n
Understanding the Art Market: Condition, Restoration and Conservation
The effect that the condition of an artwork has on its value is something that is very unpredictable and dependant on many different factors. As a general rule you should try and avoid purchasing an artwork that is in poor condition unless the artwork is of significant importance and is worth the considerable cost of restoration or conservation. I have seen many people purchase artworks in poor condition that were by a well known artist and were cheap because they thought that they were getting a bargain when in reality they were wasting their money.
Restoration and conservation of art is something that should only be done by the very best restorers and will cost a considerable amount of money so one needs to take into consideration how much the restoration will cost compared with how much it will increase the value of the work. There are also many works on the market that have been poorly restored and will be even

Water is a precious and valuable commodity here in America, not to mention in developing countries. With trying to live a more eco-friendly life, conserving water, is part of the equation. There are several things one can do to conserve water, and also to use it more wisely. Read the tips below from Metro Council on Indoor Water Conservation.
Indoor Water Conservation Tips
Check for and repair leaks
Check all water lines and faucets (including outdoor) for leaks. One way is to turn off all water in your house and read your meter. Come back in 15 minutes. If the dial has moved, you have a leak.
Check for toilet leaks
Once a year, check for toilet leaks. Remove the toilet tank cover and drip 10 drops of food coloring into the tank. After 15 minutes, check for color in the toilet bowl. If you see any color, your toilet has a leak. And remember to check your flapper periodically to make sure it’s a tight fit.

Best home fixes to reduce water bill
By Paul Bianchina
If you’re looking for a way to reduce your utility bills and do something good for the environment at the same time, it’s worth taking a good look at your home’s plumbing fixtures. Older fixtures can waste a lot more water than you may realize, and a few simple changes can often make a significant difference.
TOILETSThe toilet can be one of the largest water users in your home. While toilets manufactured after 1994 are mandated by law to use 1.6 gallons of water per flush, most toilets manufactured between about 1980 and 1993 use 3.5 gallons, and pre-1980 models can use as much as 7 gallons of water every time you press that handle down.

Log on to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Website to learn more about what you can do to make a difference in wildlife conservation! The time-tested North American Wildlife Conservation Model is the only one of its kind in the world. In the mid-1800s, hunters and anglers realized they needed to set limits in order to protect rapidly disappearing wildlife, and assume responsibility for managing wild habitats. Hunters and anglers were among the first to crusade for wildlife protection and remain some of today’s most important conservation leaders. The model’s two basic principles—that our fish and wildlife belong to all North American citizens, and are to be managed in such a way that their populations will be sustained forever—are explained through a set of guidelines known as the “Seven Sisters for Conservation.” The “Seven Sisters” hold the key to wildlife conservation as we know it today.Sister #1: The Public TrustIn North America, natural resources on public lands a

Unions Take Unprecedented Farm Bill Stance, Ask Congress to Grow Conservation Union sportsmen urge support for conservation programs, inclusion of “Open Fields” provision in Farm Bill For Immediate Release Tim Zink, 202-654-4625, tzink@trcp.org WASHINGTON - May-15 - More than 3 million hunters and anglers in unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO today called on members of Congress to adequately fund key Farm Bill conservation programs and to include a measure that would allow states to establish or expand private land hunting and fishing access programs. In a joint letter signed by 17 unions (full text of Senate version follows), the unions urge Congress to follow the Farm Bill policy recommendations of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership’s Agriculture and Wildlife Working Group (AWWG). The AWWG recommendations are contained in a comprehensive report, entitled Growing Conservation in the Farm Bill, that already has
I found this on one of my favorite websites “The Daily Om”. It describes me to a “T”. I am extremely sensitive to other people’s energies. I LOVE people, I enjoy socializing, but after about two hours at a party, I’m done. I get very overstimulated and tired at the same time and need solitary time to re-center myself.
I can go much longer in a one-to-one situation, or with a small group of close friends whose energy matches mine. I try to be around upbeat people as much as possible; that helps my personal energy and makes me feel good.
How about you? Do you find yourself overwhelmed in crowd situations? Are you sensitive to the moods and energy of those around you? Do you start a crowd situation feeling good, but then finding your mood has changed within a short time?

RomañachHuman-wildlife conflict is one of major reasons why predators are declining in number throughout Africa. Predators are often killed in response to attacks on livestock, and sometimes are killed preemptively as a perceived threat. In Kenya, wildlife has very little, if any, value to most of its citizens. As a result, wildlife population numbers have been decreasing over the last three decades, with recorded declines of 40 - 90% for most species. The beginning of the steep population declines coincided with Kenya’s ban on trophy hunting in 1977.Wildlife in Kenya is owned by the government, not by landowners. Some East and southern African countries have devolved full user rights of wildlife to its citizens, allowing people to profit from wildlife on their land. These profits serve as financial incentives for wildlife conservation on privately- and, in some cases, on co

John J. Jackson, III from Conservation Force sent me the comments that they filed with the USFWS in regards to the listing of the Polar Bear! The following response is very long but it is a must read! We all need to realize how incredibly important this legislation is in regards to our hunting rights and for the conservation of the Polar Bear! The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is not the agency that should become the regulatory arm for greenhouse gases and increased carbon emissions. It is not in the best interest of the Polar Bear and not in the best interest of the American citizens. Please read the following in its entirety!April 5, 2007Supervisor, United States Fish and Wildlife ServiceMarine Mammals Management Office1011 East Tudor Road, MS 341Anchorage, AK 99503Phone: 907-786-3800RE: Comment in Opposition to the Proposed Rule to List All Polar Bear as Threatened, 72 FR 1064 (January 9, 2007)Dear Sir,This is a comment in opposition to the proposed listing of all p

Today, thanks to the efforts of state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, and a group called the National Wild Turkey Federation, we have more than 7 million birds across the United States, and the numbers keep growing.Since its founding in 1973, the NWTF has grown too, from 1,300 members to more than 545,000 today. With that growth has come impressive strides in wildlife management as the NWTF has forged dynamic partnerships across the country, to help uphold hunting traditions and conserve more than 11.3 million acres of wildlife habitat.Leupold is proud to be one of those partners, helping to conserve and uphold hunting traditions. The debate around whale conservation goes on and on. Most of us cannot understand that whaling can be justified on any level but of course life is not as simple as that. The politics of this global debate is extremely complex. Iceland made its position clear when stating its recent intent to resume commercial whaling by immediately slaughtering 3 fin whales (an endangered species). They intend to kill 6 more in addition to the 30 minke whales already taken. Take a look at the Greenpeace whale tourism pledge – http://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/stop-icelandic-whaling .With the signatures already signed to this pledge, Greenpeace have calculated that the revenue to Iceland from whaling tourism could be worth over 10 times that of whaling slaughter. What do you think? If you feel that Iceland’s decision to restart whaling is an unnecessary and backward step then let Iceland’s Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, know at postur@for.stjr.is

It could be lights out for Google across the world. While Google is not actually going under anytime soon, Treehugger reports on an interesting find that tags Google as an energy opportunity."Did you know that a cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor uses about 74 watts to display an all white web page, but only uses 59 watts to display an all black page? Worldwide, about 25 percent of the monitors currently in use are cathode ray tubes, which means that they waste energy displaying white backgrounds. This can add up for sites with a global audience."Treehugger claims that by turning Google black, they would save 750-megawatt-hours ($75,000) a year. Called low-wattage web design, it may have to have its own set of design rules, as white text on a black background is never recommended for extensive reading. Perhaps there's a happy medium for designing for a monitor as well as a person's vision. However, the big question is, once Google goes black, will it ever go back?tags technorati : black
There's no doubt about it... Florida can be very hot and humid during the summer months. I've also been hearing in the news that this summer has also been especially hard in other parts of the country as well. Whether it's due to global warming or just coincidental, it's always a good idea to take energy conservation seriously.
Taking steps now to conserve home energy costs can save you money over time. These steps range from the free or low-cost to the more expensive which are worthwhile but will take longer to see a return on investment (ROI). Examples of both include keeping your blinds closed (except during showings if your home is for sale), installing a programmable thermostat, regularly replacing your A/C filter, vacuuming any build-up of dust on refrigerator and freezer coils, lowering your hot water heaters' temperature setting, installing window tinting, or replacing your air-conditioning system with a new, mo

According to the American Automobile Association [via The New York Times], the average nationwide price for diesel has set records 18 of the past 19 days. It's currently sitting at $3.83 a gallon. (New York, California, Pennsylvania and Vermont averaged over $4 a gallon.) The effects are being felt throughout industry. On the positive side, trucking companies are buying more fuel-efficient equipment, using electronic devices to slow driving speeds and installing auxiliary power units so truckers can sleep in their cabs without idling their rig's engine. Larger companies are looking to hybrid diesel-electric powerplants and better aerodynamics for fuel savings. On the negative side, paying for the new equipment could lead to layoffs.
