Felt Critters and a Little Conformity
Lillian's kindergarten teacher is pretty amazing. It's only a half-day program but she holds regular Drama Club and Science Club activities on her lunch hour. She even makes certificates up for the children when they complete various units in school--units on whales, dinosaurs, space, whales, etc.--which say, "I'm a penguin expert" or something equally cute and then she makes up these little critters to staple to the certificates. It finally dawned on me what to do with them all--I bought hair clips and glued them to the back of the felt so Lillian can wear them in her hair. They're just adorable as hair clips and I think I scored points with Mrs. Nishimura for my creativity--I'm hoping it will be the extra credit I need to pull off an A in her class.David, however, scored very few points th

      Conformity
So far social pressure and conformity has made it somewhat difficult for the individual to change and adopt a decarbonized lifestyle. It takes courage to say no to things we take for granted in our fossil powered society. It takes courage to take the train to the meeting or conference when all the colleagues go by plane. When going against the stream it is easy to get frustrated and ask oneself what difference it makes if I change when so many others are not. When these thoughts appear it is probably a good idea to shift to a higher gear and join some group with similar ideas as yourself. Some day I hope that this wont be needed and that the social pressure and conformity will be dictating the individual to choose the greener alternatives.

After all, it had been a long time since the band had issued a studio set (2000's America's Volume Dealer). During this extended break, singer/guitarist Pepper Keenan did double duty in Down (2002's Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow), and of course, had a much publicized tryout for the vacated bass position in Metallica (as seen in the indulgent Some Kind of Monster docu-film). But now COC is ready to roar once more, and the group does so on their eighth studio album overall. Joining Keenan once more are o

Nadav & Avihu - The Danger Of Conformity
כ"ה בניסן תשס"זIn this week's parsha (Shmini) we read about the deaths of Nadav (נדב) and Avihu (אביהוא). Most commentaries link the deaths of these two to bringing an unauthorized incense offering. Here's my simple take on it.The name Nadav is from the shoresh נדב meaning "being free and independent", "patron" and "giver". The name Avihu is from the shoresh אבה meaning "submit to an existing demand", "conforming and agreeing to the wishes of others", "acceding to a demand", and "a poor person submitting to a debtor". [1]Clearly then, the relevant relationship between these two emerges. Nadav and Avihu were not equals. One could suggest that Nadav exploited Avihu and Avihu submitted to the exploitation. In other words, Avihu conformed, perhaps even against his own better judgment, to the priestly demand of Nadav. Nadav had the power of money and Avihu lacked the strength to say no to his patron's clearly ill-conceived priestly plan.Taking all this together,
