Is the FDA Going Far Enough to Stem Conflicts of Interest?
The Food and Drug Administration has announced proposed new rules to reduce potential conflicts of interest among the outside experts who advise the government on drug approval. Under the new rules, experts on advisory committees would be required to fill out a form disclosing any potential conflicts and explaining why they should still be able to advise the agency. If the FDA agrees to grant them a waiver and allow them on the committee, the disclosure form would be posted on the FDA's Web site. Under the current system, outside advisers disclose potential conflicts to the FDA, which announces when waivers are granted but does not release the disclosure documents. There has been increasing pressure from Congress to make the FDA decision-making process more transparent. Some Democrats have argued that the FDA should bar scientists with financial conflicts from review panels.Sources:Yahoo News November 15, 2007

The state university system's general counsel tried to put to rest concerns that one of FAMU's newly appointed trustees might have business interests that pose a conflict of interest. Speaking Thursday to the Board of Governors task force working to fix financial problems at FAMU, general counsel Vikki Shirley said that FAMU trustee Robert Brown, founder of a PR firm in North Carolina, no longer has contracts with the FAMU Foundation and Alumni Affairs office. Brown's previous contracts prompted National Alumni president Alvin Bryant to protest his selection, but Shirley and Ammons said Brown is not in violation of any conflict of interest policies. In fact, FAMU trustee Bill Jennings told the task force that Brown had one outstanding invoice worth $32,000 for consulting work done before his recent appointment. But Brown has decided to donate that money to FAMU.

Security Council debate on climate change. The poor in tropical regions of Africa and Asia are likely to suffer most, perhaps creating tensions with rich nations in the temperate north which are likely to escape the worst effects of warming widely blamed on use of fossil fuels."Global warming increases the potential for conflict," Janos Bogardi, head of the U.N.
