Update: Recover the PC from Vista Stuck on Configuring Updates
While my first priority was to recover the data from the laptop, i also looked into the actual machine recovery.I was able to boot into Vista System Recovery Options from the Vista DVD, and chose System Restore. Amazingly, Vista was responsible enough to create restore points before installing the updates that sent it crashing. So i chose the restore point before the installation of the updates, waited about 10 minutes, rebooted when the System Restore asked me to, and voila, a living and breathing Vista :)Although i am an advocate of secure computing, it seems that in this case an automatic update windows update caused all the trouble. The user didn't even saw the installation, which added to the panic of a failing system and lost data. With this respect, i would recommend to the users to c

Configuring, using and debugging chan_mobile on Asterisk
If you read the previous post on chan_mobile on asterisk, here is the follow up, straight from Asterisk SVN.Configuring chan_mobile :-The configuration file for chan_mobile is /etc/asterisk/mobile.conf. It is a normal Asterisk config file consisting of sections and key=value pairs.See configs/mobile.conf.sample for an example and an explanation of the configuration.Using chan_mobile :-chan_mobile.so must be loaded either by loading it using the Asterisk CLI, or by adding it to /etc/asterisk/modules.confSearch for your bluetooth devices using the CLI command 'mobile search'. Be patient with this command as it will take 8 - 10 seconds to do the discovery. This requires a free adapter.Headsets will generally have to be put into 'pairing' mode before they will show up here. This will return something like the following :-*CLI> mobile searchAddress Name Usable Type Port00:12:56:90:6E:00 LG TU500

Cleaning Up the File System & Configuring the Trusted Computing Base
Cleaning Up the File SystemAIX does not come with a completely clean file system. The above cleanup operations might delete user IDx that own files on the system. To find all of those unowned files, use the following command:Find / ( -nouser -o -nogroup ) -printAnother area for concern is files that are world writable. That is, they have permission definitions that allow any user to update or delete them. There are some files and directories that by default are world writeable but should not be. Find them with the following command:Find / -perm -0002 ( -type f -o -type d ) -printOnly /tmp and some directories under /var should be world writeable. Everything else sound by the command here has incorrect permissions.Configuring the Trusted Computing BaseThe Trusted Computing Base (TCB) is an AIX feature that keeps track of file modifications for critic

Configuring incoming mail on MOSS 2007 and Exchange 2007
Configuring incoming mail on MOSS 2007 and Exchange 2007 took a little bit of fiddling about with and quite a bit of standing back going um and ah. I configured the MOSS screen easy enough. The key fields were the Active Directory container and the SMTP mail server and Accept messages from authenticated users only - other settings can be refined later. Click on the image for a larger view.On the default SMTP Virtual Server under IIS, I had to put in the IP address of the Exchange Server, as shown in the image.A quick check on the AD Controller showed the AD Container name successfully appeared and I was able to set an email address against a document library. On the Exchange Server it was a fairly simple matter of creating a Hub Transport Send Connector and choose a suitable smart host authentication method for communications between Exchange and MOSS. The Address Space Tab showed the moss.domain.com address. The network tab was told to route all traffic through the following smart hos
