Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the new documentary Lagerfeld Confidential. Director Rodolphe Marconi was allowed unprecedented access to the designer who reinvented the Chanel label. Lagerfeld is witty and matter-of-fact without being arrogant. The documentary is subtitled, which I normally champion. But in this case, I wish they had dubbed it - I wanted to ogle the clothing more! Some highlights: Lagerfeld’s first show for Chanel, Spring 1983. The shoulder pads are bulky, the suits are very 1980s, and Karl’s hair is darker than his signature sunglasses. The “black coat show”, where the models walk a multi-level runway in the round, wearing spectacular black coats. When all the models are present, they shed their coats to reveal fabulous, brightly colored frocks. It made me want to stand and applaud. Many of you know what I think of the Yukon Government as a corporate entity. From the former heroin trafficker Premier to the nationally-famous hiring practices, I have nothing good to say about it. That’s why I’m very pleased to see a new blog devoted to airing the dirty laundry that originates there. The first post at Yukon Confidential confirms it as a regular on my browsing list. The reason that I used the term “the Yukon Government as a corporate entity” is that my dealings with the front-line employees at several offices have been consistently positive. Despite the conditions they work under, there are some fine Yukoners working at Motor Vehicles, Highways, Land Titles and Community Services in particular. But having worked for the government for 4 years, I know the other side, and that bad taste will never go away.

Glazing snowflakesI spent the better part of yesterday in my studio - getting organized, cleaning and doing some miscellaneous tasks like touching up the kid's snowflake ornaments from class last week. I had them glaze their own snowflakes - but when I inspected them, many had missed spots, so cleaned them up a little. I just finished rewatching the whole series of KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL, and let me tell you, this show is hilarious. I cannot believe this show was cancelled, I really feel like it wasn’t given enough time to find its audience. I am so sad that there isn’t any episodes left for me to watch. I would definitely recommend watching this TV Show on DVD if you want to spend a few hours of fun. Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential (1997) is a gritty period noir, a great drama with multiple storylines and characters that weave a cohesive tapestry of corruption, loyalty and murder. Everything works in this film and it was my favorite of that year. Titanic won all the box office and Best Picture, but this movie has all of my respect.This clip demonstrates how a 'hook' can be completely character-driven. The three main characters are introduced in their own scene, along with a couple of important supporting types. I have never seen a film define roles this fast and effectively. It's a credit to the script (by Hanson and Brian Helgeland) and superb performances by Kevin Spacey and then Australian unknowns Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce.I'm a big fan of film noir, and this is the best example of it in recent years. Tokyo Confidential is a short documentary-like film on the more quirky aspects of Japanese modern culture. I watched it at the Substation in Dec 2005 during the Panasonic-MDA Digital Film Fiesta 2005. The film itself has been uploaded to YouTube (where else?) by the director/producer/cameraman himself, Anthony Koithra, so there shouldn't be any issues with copyright and IP stuff.Anyway, the film is 13:05 minutes long and for those who are only interested in the highlights of this film, check out this part on Japanese vehicle modding scene from 2 mins to 4mins.
