I remember receiving a handout from a former employer, which provided this notation about workplace harassment: “Whether or not harassment took place should be viewed from the perspective of the victim and not the accused.”In line with that, the EEOC says: There are two requirements for race-based conduct to trigger potential liability for unlawful harassment: (1) the conduct must be unwelcome

Its about growth...its about sharing and sometimes that means sharing the limelight. Now I don't know about you but since blogging my opportunities have increased..my mind has expanded but most of all I now know so many people, people all around the world. RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: DINA DE MALCHUTA DINA [ THE LAW OF THE LAND IS THE LAW ] OR NASATA VE NATATA BE EMUNAH [ DID YOU CONDUCT BUSINESS HONESTLY ] OR BOTH? BUYING DISCOUNTED FORECLOSED HOMES. I read recently of a Jewish real estate investor being brought before a Bet Din, a Jewish Court, because he was buying foreclosed homes, at very discounted prices. While this was perfectly legal under his State and Federal law, was it 'kosher' under Jewish ethics? There is an old tradition, when Jews in their own communities inside the greater communities at large, judged themselves. It was considered Chilul ha Shem, (desecration of God's name) for a Jew to bring another Jew into a secular court for adjudication. And so batai din (Jewish courts

Some 15 students of Cantebury College, London, Britain will plant coral reef seeds around Sikuai Island, Padang, West Sumatra, on Monday (April 7, 2008) during their six-day stay in the region, a spokesman said. The social activity would be held based on cooperation between tour operator "Sumatra and Beyond", marine tourist resort organizer of Sikuai Island and non-governmental organization (NGO) Minang Bahari Foundation, said Ridwan Tulus, the Sumatra and Beyond director here on Saturday. The coral reef seeds planting activity had become the primary tourism package in Europe, especially among British students, he told Antara. Megastar Chiranjeevi is now going through a very rough phase in his personal life for quite some time. He was first facing with a series of flops a few years ago. Just when everyone thought that his career had ended, he came back strongly with films like Tagore, Indra, Shankar Dada MBBS etc. and silenced his critics. Then Chiranjeevi faced problems on his personal front. His brother Pawan Kalyan was caught in a bigamy case filed by his first wife Nandini. The metropolitan court in Visakhapatnam served notices on Chiranjeevi, Allu Aravind, Nagababu and other members of Chiru family. This caused a lot of embarrassment to Chiranjeevi. With great difficulty they managed to come out of this and were heaving a sigh of relief when Nandini once again approached the high court with a review petition.

Tom suggests something short and sharp in 12 points:

2. Own your own content
3. Be nice
4. Keep secrets
5. No anonymous comments
6. Remember the civil service code
7. Got a problem? Talk to your boss

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued the Green marketing and Trade Practices Act on February 8, 2008. The summary of the act available on the ACCC Web site is as follows:"This guide is to educate businesses about their obligations regarding environmental claims under the Trade Practices Act 1974. It aims to assist manufacturers, suppliers, advertisers and others to assess the strength of any environmental claims they make and to improve the accuracy and usefulness to consumers of their labeling, packaging and advertising."Because most of the selling points that green marketers aim to promote are complex and scientific in nature, this act will help simplify and operationalize green claims into basic terms that consumers can better understand.ACCC acknowledges that gr

The Insurance Fair Conduct Act (formerly Referendum 67) was recently passed by Washington State voters last November. This new law became effective Dec. 6, 2007. And insurance companies are seeking ways to mitigate it's impact. One attorney who represents insurance companies is giving advice to them on his own "insurance law blog."
All claims brought under the Insurance Fair Conduct Act must be preceded by a 20-day notice of the claim to the insurance company and the insurance commissioner. (The Office of the Insurance Commissioner has created a cover sheet for the notice.)
An action may be brought only if the insurance company fails to resolve the basis for the action. One defense to the claim is if the carrier relies on a "written opini
How many times have you found yourself staring blankly at the wall during another pointless meeting which seems to last for hours? I often find myself baffled at how senior management seems to be clueless when it comes to conducting efficient meetings.Conducting efficient meetings might seem easy to achieve but is rather challenging. Many people aspire to express themselves and be heard and a meeting is just the place. A delicate balance needs to be achieved between avoiding the waste of time and avoiding insulting or hurting fellow workers. The best way to conduct efficient meetings is setting the right ground. By setting the right ground the meeting can be channeled to where we want it.Here are my recommendations on setting the right ground for efficient meetings:1. A meeting should have a clear goal - If you've decided to allocate your co-worker's precious time resource to a meeting be sure to have a clear and understandable goal. An example can be deciding on the next marketin
There have been many stories in the media regarding the behavior of Paul supporters in the blogosphere. There have also been stories regarding Paul supporters hassling other candidates. Dave Nalle, a libertarian who supports political action in the Republican Party, warns that the behavior of Ron Paul’s supporters at Republican gatherings is also counterproductive:
In party politics it doesn’t matter how right you are, it only matters how many people are convinced that you have a winning strategy. Paul’s supporters don’t understand this or don’t want to understand it. They’re thinking in terms of running an outsider, grassroots campaign. But Paul deliberately didn’t run as an independent. He showed the good sense to run as a Republican, knowing all of the advantages of access and opportunity he would have in the primaries and the base of support he’d be able to count on in the general election if he won the nomination.

PORT ANGELES/December 10, 2007 – At a public meeting here Friday, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission approved a package of new rules for public conduct on lands managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and deferred action on others.
The proposed rules, developed by WDFW after an extensive public-input process, addressed dumping, camping, commercial use, fire-building, firearm use and other activities on WDFW wildlife areas and water-access sites around the state. The rules will go into effect by Jan. 31, 2008.
The nine-member commission, which sets policy for WDFW, deferred action on three rules dealing with livestock grazing, resource removal and vehicle use. The commission requested initiation of a new rule-making process to further revise those rules and gather additional public input.
In the interim, the current state regulations pertaining to livestock grazing, resource removal and vehicle use on department lands remain in effect.

December is here and it means that 2008 is just around the corner. Most people tend to start relaxing and enjoy the holiday celebration. With work starting to slow down, it is the perfect time to start looking into a few things before the year is over!
Roth IRA - If you haven’t already done so, start contributing up to $4,000 ($5,000 if you are 50 or older) for the year 2007. The deadline is April of 2008 for this year’s contribution, but don’t put it off as April will be here before you know it.
401k - You should at least look at your 401k plan periodically to see if there are any adjustments that need to be made. You should also consider increasing your contribution percentage for next year so you can save more money! Those that recently got a raise should seriously consider this because you won’t know the difference of contributing more as your take home money would not decrease.
Another thing to check your 401k plan for is your asset allocation. It is always

In a time where the left has accused the president of trampling the constitution with his foreign surveillance program, which the left has dubbed the domestic spying program, also known as warrantless wiretapping, I find this story rather interesting. The headline of the story,”Police to Search for Guns in Homes”, is innocent enough, but when you read the story it is a little more involved than that.
Boston police are launching a program that will call upon parents in high-crime neighborhoods to allow detectives into their homes, without a warrant, to search for guns in their children’s bedrooms.
Boston police now want to prey on the fear of parents in order to illegally search their homes. Now while the left has been up in arms about the president listening to terrorists talk on the telephone, it will be interesting to see if there is an uproar over these illegal, unconstitutional searches.
How many parents will be afraid t
Dear Useless Men,My guy thinks he can play hockey. He can't even skate all that well. How can I tell him, without squishing his esteem like a bug, that they aren't really laughing with him?Signed, Hard to Watch Dear Hard to Watch,To be honest, most guys think they can play hockey. In reality, there is a minimal percentage of even professional hockey players that can actually play hockey. The rest of the guys just skate around and try to look competent. What works in their favour is the simple fact that most people really don't understand hockey enough to truly understand what makes a good player. If you think it's a simple game that anyone can play, just watch the players in their pre-game skate. You can immediately see proof that not even everyone that is suited up is capable in that they often miss the net that has absolutely no goalie in it. With nobody there to block the shot, every shot should be a winner. Most tend to miss. What you should be doing, instead of crushing
The end of the year is swiftly approaching, and as the budget cycle is coming to a close, the work piles up quickly. I have had a staff of three from January through August, and with the piling work, we have had to triple in size. A staff of nine is very different to manage compared to a staff of three. There are many things to wrangle during ramp-up: a new corporate culture, new policies, new development environment, new standards, new team members. One of the tools in the technology manager's arsenal is the peer review. The CodingHorror web site outlines why they think software development departments should perform code reviews in their article called "Code Reviews: Just Do It." Jared Richardson also describes the value of peer code reviews on his blog. The basic reasons for implementing code reviews are obvious: reduced bugs, reduced rework, cross training, quicker ramp-up time, sharing of ideas, developer growth, mentorship opportunities

Seattle Judge Seeks Inquiry Into Dallas Lawyers' Alleged Conduct. Source: Texas Lawyer Publication Date: 01/15/2007 Author: Robbins, Mary Alice COPYRIGHT 2007 American Lawyer Media L.P. Staunton City Council will conduct up to three forums around the city to gather citizen input on a proposal to shift city elections to coincide with state and federal elections. The Staunton Electoral Board has asked City Council to consider such a change to save money and to potentially increase voter involvement in local elections. City elections are currently held in May. The proposed change would schedule them to occur with the general election in November. Since changing dates for elections is a significant step for the city, the members of City Council want to hear from city residents before taking action. The public forums on election dates will be held: * 7 p.m. Monday, October 1 in the Lee High School cafeteria, and * 7 p.m. Monday, October 22 in the Shelburne Middle School cafeteria A third forum may be scheduled later. Members of City Council will be present at all forums and any resident of the City of Staunton is invited to attend and speak to the subject. Resi
Future Access Still an IssueThe National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has denied issuing Exempted Fishing Permits (EFP) to 13 pelagic longline vessels to fish within closed zones off the east coast of Florida. The recreational fishing community expressed strong opposition to the permit application noting that the zones were closed to provide protection for critical habitat for juvenile swordfish, sailfish, blue marlin and white marlin. At the time the agency considered the permits, it was reassessing white marlin under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Longlining in the closed zone would have increased white marlin mortality, as well as that of other species, so it made no sense to approve a “federal action” that would have negatively impacted white marlin. The recreational fishing community applauds the agency for its decision to close the zones in 2000 and now for denying the EFPs. We're not out of the woods yet... Even so, the issue is not settled o
One of the articles that I had been thinking about that was not necessarily relevant to my blogging theme was if there are ethics to blogging and what should be disclosed, discussed conversed, done to other blogs, interaction with communities, advertising, monetizing and manipulation of content.
One of the problems that I have always had with ethics and morals is that to me there is no central set of ethics and morals, not just world-wide, but within any society or even family. What is appropriate and acceptable conduct for one person is not for another. Different people have different values and as such the ethical and moral considerations they will have when contemplating an action will also be different.
Now with a community of bloggers there must be some people who consider that everything that is to be done is to make money. Whatever makes them money they will deem acceptable as it is not harming people, and if visitor and readers are happy to read and put up with that approach th

This is a follow-up post to my posts on .Net Hiring Manager Resources and on Preparing for a .Net Interview. I will be interviewing a number of candidates next week for open positions in our department. I thought it would be good to review the process that we have typically followed, and get feedback. 1. Introduction Someone should meet the candidate at the receptionist's desk. It is a good idea to have the hiring manager do this. Look them in they eye, introduce yourself, and shake their hands firmly. On the walk to the interview room, share some small talk about the weather and the drive. This gives you an idea if they will mind how far they will have to drive to work. It also gives you the opportunity to check out how they dress and how they carry themselves. Once you are in the interview room, let them know that the interview will be about an hour long. Ask them if they would like something to drink, and to get more comfortable. Introduce them to everyone that they ar

Diff’rent Strokes actor and all around badass Gary Coleman was cited for disorderly conduct in Provo, Utah for - and get this - getting angry and hitting his steering wheel. NO SHIT:
One of Utah County’s more famous transplants has run afoul of the law. Provo police cited actor Gary Coleman for disorderly conduct after witnesses said they saw him having a heated discussion with a woman last Friday evening.

G-strings are the right type of lingerie for wearing in summer. You can wear them under your skintight and see-through outfits. Your body is likely to get an even, steady tan if you wear g-string swimwear while relaxing on the beach. However, wearing g-strings all the time can be risky in terms of women’s health.Dr. Liza Masterson, a gynecologist from Los Angeles, has carried out a research to find out whether the prolonged use of g-strings would be safe for the female body. Dr. Masterson released the results of her study a while ago. According to her, that fancy underwear otherwise known as g-strings can pose a real threat to women’s health. Click here to see a pic of Anna Kournikova having trouble with her g-string First, women who wear g-strings day in and day out are more susceptible to developing yeast vaginal infections and venereal diseases. THE WISDOM OF THE AGES 13 - CONDUCT - by MANOJ SHARMAContemplate the following and make sense of it...If you devote yourself to live in the most beneficial way you know how, for the greatest good of humanity, for the longest time possible and educate others to do the same, you can only be moving in the right long term pleasurable general direction, regardless of short term painful fluctuations.A reputation for trust takes a lifetime to build an an instant to destroy. Likewise, we would all like a reputation for generosity and would preferably like to buy it cheap. It can be argued that fear-free, desire-free, ego-free conduct is the riskiest to develop. It can also be argued that it is quite possibly the most rewarding too.If every past attempt at improving your conduct has failed you, take on leadership, put yourself in public life and become recognizable. You will leave yourself no choice but to steadily improve your conduct or face the consequences of your choices and causes. The ave

Ascension Alverez-Tejeda and his girlfriend drove up to a traffic light. As the light turned green, the car in front of them lurched forward, then stalled. Alverez-Tejeda managed to stop in time, but the truck behind him tapped his bumper. As Alverez-Tejeda got out to inspect the damage, two officers pulled up in a police cruiser and arrested the truck driver for drunk driving. The officers got Alverez-Tejeda and his girlfriend to drive to a nearby parking lot, leave the keys in the car and get into the cruiser for processing. Just then, out of nowhere, someone snuck into their car and drove off with it. As the couple stood by in shock, the police jumped into their cruiser and chased after the car thief with sirens blaring. The police then returned to the parking lot, told the couple that the thief had gotten away and dropped them off at a local hotel.
The whole incident was staged. DEA agents learned that one of the leaders of a drug conspiracy was dealing drugs out of his car
Well maybe it wasn’t fake! (lol) Remember that video of Akon THROWING A KID into the crowd for hurling an object at him while he was on stage? Well, we said we thought it was fake, but maybe it wasn’t because now the police are supposedly getting involved! On Wednesday, Akon’s attorney released a statement proclaiming Black Night’s innocence:
“Given the information that we have reviewed to date, it does not appear to us that Akon was involved in any criminal conduct whatsoever,” read a statement from Akon’s attorney, Benjamin Brafman. “We are prepared to fully cooperate with any law enforcement agency that may be investigating this incident. We are confident that after a thorough investigation it will be apparent that no criminal prosecution of Akon is warranted.”
Fishkill police have the name of the fan who was hurled from the stage but have not yet released it. According to eyewitnesses and the fan video, the boy was pulled out o
Here’s some information that was sent to me by a reader. I’ve concealed the identities of those involved, but this is still a powerful example of how a person can have their reputation destroyed by colleagues and managers. It’s also an example of how defamation/slander, etc. can cost a person their job!The Reader wrote...Employers either don’t realize, don’t care, or don’t see it as a serious of issue, but slander, libel and defamation of character are illegal and the employer can be penalized. Here's what happened to me:Coworker X knew the accusations she made against me were lies, yet she repeated them to Coworker Y, Coworker Z, and Manager A; Manager A then “confirmed” Coworker X’s statements through Coworker Y and Coworker Z, who admitted to Manager A that they were only repeating what they had heard from Coworker X. Neither Manager A nor HR had proof of the accusations, they didn’t make an attempt to find the truth, and based on HR’s comments, HR only judg
Mr and Mrs Henshall's case is detailed below. There is the issue of stolen papers and the second issue that is more of an interesting one present in the BBC article. This is one of the cases against Prof Southall et all. Penny Mellor is known to them. Its all about history, similarity and patterns. In reply to a few postings received from anonymous sources1. I never react to threats. I do though have a folder marked " Silly people who can't string an argument together"2. The GMC has already been aware of this blog and my websites since its inception. There is nothing to hide. If they wish to strike me off for my views then so be it. Might get a few hits on the website from the hearing anyway. We shall just have to tell the GMC to add a line mentioning my URL in the footer of all legal papers. 3. I am currently detailing a few issues on the opposing arguments of Prof Southall. I believe MAMA have done their bit and slated him, so we can now examine the opposing behaviour 4. I never suf
DSM-IV 312.XX Conduct disorder 312.81 Childhood-onset type 312.82 Adolescent-onset type Conduct disorder is most distinguishable by the degree of repetitive and persistent violation of the basic rights of others. Common antisocial behaviors acted out in the home and school setting include physical aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, lying, and theft. There is a total disregard for age-appropriate social norms as the child purposely engages in criminals acts, truancy from school, and breaking curfew. The DSM-IV criteria rates the level of severity as mild, moderate, to severe. The greater the level of delinquency and frequency in early childhood, the greater the risk for chronic offending into adulthood. Other prognostic factors leading to the continuation of the disorder include age of onset and the variation in problem behaviors displayed in multiple settings. Co-morbid diagnoses often associated with this condition are hyperactivity, depression, and che

A few weeks ago, I read this article from Boing Boing on Blogger "code of conduct" trades freedom for politeness. It impressed my that Tim O'Reilly's proposed code of conduct was well meaning in response to Kathy Sierra's situation, but a little overbearing and just too hard to swallow for most folks. The badge is admittedly hokey, but heck, I'm a mom, and that's the rule in my house. Those people who don't want to follow what is mostly common courtesy, should have their moms come and smack them upside the head. I do delete comments especially if they have no bearing on the post, but thankfully have not had to deal with negative or hurtful feedback. These comments range from generic spam to all out rants about who knows what (I stop reading as soon as I see words like Anti-Christ, kill, copulating, etc.)This story on NPR included an interview with Kathy Sierra, which prompted me to finally post on this topic. There is definitely an issue where people hide behind their anon
For years I worked as a coach and lesson teacher in the public schools of suburban Chicago. I ran sectionals, did some chamber music coaching, and taught a gaggle of kids during and after the school day. Although I was pretty hesitant about doing this work when I started freelancing, worrying that it would be a massive time sink, I quickly came to enjoy it and I looked forward to the variety that each day of teaching would bring. I quickly learned that you can be called upon to do ANYTHING in a music department. I usually got to these schools around 8 a.m., coffee in hand, bleeding from both eyes, feeling the pain of both burning the midnight oil as a freelance bassist and being a schoolteacher in the early mornings. I was always surprised at how great I felt on days when I finally got more than four or five hours of sleep—I had conditioned myself to think of sleep deprived Jason as normal Jason, and I was always amazed to se how all the colors looked brighter, all the sme

Conducting local interviews to post on your blog or website is one of the best ways to generate new customers.
Who will you interview, What will you talk about, When will you schedule it, Where will you conduct it, Why is it important, and HOW will you attract more customers?
_______________________
I certainly don’t claim to be an expert in this subject. I know that some traditional journalists scowl at the idea of lay people conducting interviews. Trust me, it’s been known to happen (read the first comment on this post). The game has totally changed since the dawn of the blog, and you; yes YOU have every right to interview anyone you want.
The exciting thing about interviewing is that most of the time you get to choose the topic, interviewee, and format.
Here are 5 interview ideas, and why they could help your business create more customers:
1. The Local Interview — This is one of my favorites. It is perfect for you real estate agents t

This has come about after the Kathy Sierra episode. Full draft below:We celebrate the blogosphere because it embraces frank and open conversation. But frankness does not have to mean lack of civility. We present this Blogger Code of Conduct in hopes that it helps create a culture that encourages both personal expression and constructive conversation. 1. We take responsibility for our own words and for the comments we allow on our blog.We are committed to the “Civility Enforced” standard: we will not post unacceptable content, and we’ll delete comments that contain it. We define unacceptable content as anything included or linked to that:- is being used to abuse, harass, stalk, or threaten others- is libelous, knowingly false, ad-hominem, or misrepresents another person,- infringes upon a copyright or trademark- violates an obligation of confidentiality - violates the privacy of othersWe define and determine what is “unacceptable content” on a ca
Just when you thought that there were things in life that were untouchable by bureaucrats and regulations, along come Tim O'Reilly (Web guru) and Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia founder) to stick their oar in. No! This medium is not for the free spirited, and most definitely not a blank canvass where you can use colour. Their ill-conceived Blogger Code of Conduct is a knee-jerk response to the recent threatening comments that were written on Tim's friend's blog. Not bored yet? Read on. If you adhere to their set of rules, you get to wear a badge that only grown-up blog owners can have. You could even go one step further and give stars to commenters you particularly like. This proposed code is essentially a controlling mechanism. Nice people only allowed on the Internet please. One could be forgiven that this is all being sponsored by the Chinese government's Dept of Censorship. Any blog worth its salt does some sort of moderation anyway. Tony Blair once said that he particularly dislikes the
As a responsible turkey hunter, I will• not let peer pressure or the excitement of the hunt cloud my judgment;• learn and practice safe hunting techniques;• hunt the wild turkey fairly;• know the capabilities and limitations of my gun or bow and use it safely;• obey and support all wildlife laws and report all violations• respect the land and the landowner and always obtain permission before hunting;• avoid knowingly interfering with another hunter and respect the right of others to lawfully share the out-of-doors;• value the hunting experience and appreciate the beauty of the wild turkey;• positively identify my target as a legal bird and insist on a good shot; and share responsible turkey hunting with others and work for wild turkey conservation.Huntinglife.com is a project I am taking on to create a resource to match outfitters and hunters

Following from Kathy Sierra's encounter with the "dark side" of the blogosphere, Tim O'Reilly (Web 2.0TM) proposed a "blogger’s code of conduct" which is getting a lot of media attention and a lot of flak from bloggers. I don’t have time to go at length as to why I think this is daft or even a dangerous idea as I am struggling to finish my MBA thesis (I shouldn’t be blogging but I could not resist on that one). I am pointing you instead to two bloggers who best encapsulate what I would have written: Tristan Louis who does a great job at explaining how unworkable this proposal is and Jeff Jarvis who shows the flipside of it. Tags: code of conduct
I have written about the dark side of the internet and also about people abusing complete strangers on the internet. Since then I have understood the problem better. I delete racist/rude/abusive/misrepresentative comments/trackbacks and I don’t care if that person cries censorship. At first I felt guilty, but now I don’t.
And today I discovered that it [...]
Religious Values That WouldFind Fault With Jesus Mainstream Iowan has blogged about the Iowa case previously, concerning the student who was suspended from athletics for his parents following Iowa law concerning the use of alcohol here, here and here. We ask the question, "Why must students abide by a different religious value system other than their own in a public school setting outside the classroom in America?"We understand that there are many different religions, and that North Scott High School and the Iowa Board of Education have a different set of values than many others. Their rules and codes of conduct concerning complete abstinence from alcohol follow the faith of Islam. The majority of Americans at this time are not Muslims. Yet even if they were, the United States still has freedom of religion in this country. Non-Muslim students should not be forced to adhere to Islamic teachings to participate in extra-curricular activities in school, any more than Muslims students shou

In MOsanthrope's blog post titled "How to Destroy Your Legal Career with One Simple Click", he links to an e-mail exchange that, to me, is essentially equivalent to flushing your law degree down the toilet.Unlike Ms. Abdala, I have come to the conclusion that the pay --or lack thereof -- associated with part-time blogging does not support the lifestyle I am accustomed to living. Accordingly, I have decided to remain gainfully employed.
Microsoft, Google, Yahoo & Vodafone. Not often of such big, and competing companies collaborating on such a major project as this. But it seems that the companies have teamed together, in the hope of creating a 'Code Of Conduct'."Technology companies have come under fire for providing equipment or software that permits governments to censor information or monitor the online or offline activities of their citizens. For example, last year, Google's approach to the China market was criticized over its creation of a censored, local version of its search engine. A Yahoo subsidiary was cited by human rights groups for working with Chinese police to identify political activists, who were ultimately arrested and prosecuted for posting anti-government opinions and information online. The parties involved said that they would develop a framework that would hold signatories accountable for their actions in the areas of freedom of expression and privacy rights."
