Complementary Therapies for Depression. Conclusions 2
A number of mechanisms by which exercise may improve mood have been proposed. (41, 46) These include physiological effects, such as changes in endorphin and monoamine levels; psychological effects, such as subject expectation, diversion from stressful stimuli, the effects of receiving attention, improved self-image, and feelings of control; and sociological factors, such as the benefits of social interaction and support. Although some longitudinal epidemiological evidence (89, 90) indicates that there may be a strong link between exercise and a reduction in depression levels, it is necessary to investigate this possibility further via high quality RCTs. Depression has a prevalence of 5% in the general population. It is estimated that at least one third of all individuals are likely to experience an episode of depression during their lifetime. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is often negatively defined, for example, as “a system of health care which lies for the most part outside the mainstream of conventional medicine.” (7) A more inclusive definition has been adopted by the Cochrane Collaboration: “complementary medicine is diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention which complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, by satisfying a demand not met by orthodoxy, or by diversifying the conceptual frameworks of medicine.” Complementary and alternative therapies (CATs) are popular. In 1991, 34% of the US adult population used at least 1 such therapy for 1 year. This figure has now risen to 40%. Study Of Complementary Therapies On Patients Recovering From Heart Surgery
A new Mayo Clinic study shows that massage therapy decreases pain levels for patients after heart surgery. During a five-month period in 2005, 58 patients undergoing surgery participated in a pilot study to examine the effect of massage on pain after surgery. Of the 30 who received massage, the mean pain scores were less than 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 as the most painful. Before the massage therapy, these patients rated their pain at an average of 3 on a 10-point scale. In the control group of 28, pain levels remained the same over the same period, according to findings published in the current edition of Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. As a result of the pilot study, Mayo now has a full-time massage therapist available for patients after heart surgery, and a larger, randomized study is under way. Mayo Clinic’s cardiovascular surgery group began looking at complementary therapies in 2004. “In surveys, we started to hear from patients that tension, stres

Some of the pain medications had side effects that made it difficult for Jones to perform his job. Occupational therapy intervened with acupressure, modifications for performing daily activities and adaptive devices, such as a long handle reacher that allowed him to put on socks without bending over. Within one month, Jones was able to get through the day with improved performance, better sleep and less pain medication. He also was taught how to do modified exercises, yoga and use lumbar support while driving and sleeping. “It is important to get patients who are inactive because of pain involved in purposeful activities; it also helps

Complementary and alternative medicine - Spontaneous recovery from disease
Alternative and complementary medicine refers to products and practices which are not part of the standard medical procedure that you get when you go to a hospital. Though the terms are often used interchangeably, alternative refers to when a practice aspires to replace standard medical care whereas complementary practices only aspire to complement standard medical procedure. For sure, for sure, medical research is far from a complete understanding of the physiology and anatomy of humans, and there are almost certainly many effective remedies which are not a part of the standard repertoire today. In the future we will no doubt see many advances in science and in consequence, new therapies to treat disease. Having said this, complementary and alternative medicine suffers from what I consider to be a much more serious problem. First of, many of the techniques and practices used in alternative and complementary medicine have never been tested, or have not gained any support, in controlled
