I am enjoying Stephen Fry's The Ode Less Travelled so much, I really can't recommend it highly enough if you would like to learn about the technical side of poetry. The more I read about the criminal complaint filed by House Parliamentarian Terry Keel against Austin political consultant Kelly Fero, the more I realize this is a wake-up call for bloggers across Texas to demand that we receive the same rights and privileges as the members of the media are afforded under Texas law.
Fred Lewis has already done an excellent job explaining why Keel’s criminal complaint is nothing more than a bogus distraction in the Travis County DA’s race.

Yesterday, we heard about Opera launching an anti-trust complaint against Microsoft over Internet Explorer. The complaint, field in the EU, asserts that Microsoft should be forced to unbundle IE from Windows or include an alternative browser by default. The state’s two-count complaint against Samuel E. Goodwin, III is the first action filed under the state’s Consumer Fraud Act to address deceptive practices in the area of surplus funds recovery. Goodwin allegedly charged homeowners 15% to 65% of the total surplus funds to which they were legally entitled by misleading the homeowners into believing that the process to recover the funds was complicated and could not be filed by the homeowners on their own. I've been wondering how long it would be until someone started to complain that Right Said Fred Thompson seems to be pushing his non-candidacy a bit beyond the reasonable "exploration" one would expect that status to be for. I'll review the show on Wednesday after my test, but I'll respond to this letter today I read in this week's issue of the Army Times today. In it, an an Army Wife expresses her displeasure at Army Wives, a show on Lifetime(!) for not portraying the lives of real-life Army wives accurately. She's shocked. Shocked! that a Soap Opera on Lifetime is more concerned about drama than the accurate portrayal of the Army wife lifestyle.
I don't mean to be harsh with Mrs. Franz who I'm sure is a nice woman and an exemplary Army wife. But television shows of this type exist to present dramatic situations. As laudable as home-schooling is, I'm sure most women prefer to see a show where the characters fall in love with men other than their husbands, cat around in "Jody bars," and face domestic violence than a mother dutifully cutting up paper pizzas to teach fractions. It’s probably because I am reading Dick Staub’s new book The Culturally Savvy Christian. He calls Christians to task for co-opting pop culture instead of creating a culturally diverse subculture.
I was listening to Dick’s Podcast and he said something I liked: If christianity had to make a subculture, why did it make it such a boring one. His main point, I think, is that Pop-Christianity just steals what it sees going on in the world around it. The mega churches and even the mini churches try to create a setting that reflects pop culture. Everything from sermon series, skits, worship songs, artwork. Everything is a poor copy of what the rest of Americana is digging.
