Today after log time I was running compiz under Gnome (OpenSuse 11) to impress my wife :) and fired up VLC to play a movie and oops -- VLC din't show up any video and was only playing the audio part of the movie.

Open VLC preference settings: Go to Settings --> Preferences
From the preference window go to Video --> Output modules
There may be instances when you need to disable Desktop Effects (Compiz Fusion) temporarily in openSUSE.
To disable Desktop Effects temporarily,
Press + F2 and type “metacity — replace”
This should let compiz to start but disables later on. This will replace metacity as the new Window Manager.
To re-enable Desktop Effects
Press + F2 and type “compiz-manager –replace
With compiz enabled you can play with the opacity of your windows. This is done by putting your mouse over the window, pressing ALT and scrolling with your mousewheel. In Ubuntu Hardy Heron, Compiz Fusion is already installed and is automatically enabled after you have installed your graphics' card drivers.
The only thing you have to do is to install the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager.

Lo primero que necesitamos es tener aceleración gráfica, entonces lo que haremos es instalar los últimos drivers de nuestra placa de video..Para que la instalación sea mas fácil usaremos envy, un excelente programa que nos instala automáticamente los últimos drivers disponibles para nuestra gráfica, sea modelo de ATI o Nvidia..entonces ingresamos en un terminal lo siguiente.."sudo aptitude install envyng-core envyng-gtk" (o envyng-gt si usamos kubuntu)una vez q nos instala.. vamos al menú Aplicaciones/herramientas del sistema/EnvyNG, abrimos y elegimos el fabricante de la placa que tengamos.. (en mi caso Nvidia..) y le damos instalar.aceptamos todo y cuando nos termina de instalar los paquetes reiniciamos, si todo fue bien cuando nos vuelva a iniciar el sistema nos saltara el log

La mayoria de nosotros ya tenemos instalado Compiz Fusion pero por defecto no trae el asistente que nos permite configurar los diferentes efectos graficos. La instalacion es tan simple como ejecutar:

Os voy a contar mi problema por si a alguno os pasa lo mismo que sepáis como lo he solucionado. Con el nuevo Ubuntu 7.10, ya viene el Compiz Fusion digamos “de serie”. Pero los que tenemos tarjetas ATI, siempre estamos temiendo jugar con estos programas de decoración de escritorio.
Hoy he formateado el pc y he metido el 7.10 de Ubuntu desde cero. Al principio todos los efectos de escritorio (del Compiz me iban genial)
Pero lógicamente, como sabía que se podía instalar los drivers de ATI (ATI binary X.Org driver) desde el menú (Aplicaciones>Añadir y Quitar) lo primero que he hecho es instalarme mis drivers de la ATI pensando en que mejoraría el rendimiento de alguna forma. Cual ha sido mi sorpresa, cuando se han ido todos los efectos… he intentado volver a ponerlos (Sistema>Preferencias>Apariencia>Efectos de escritorio)* y me devolvía el siguiente temido error:

Finalmente gl amanti del 3d su linux potranno rendersi una pausa per ammirare il nuovo compiz, il team nomina questa versione come “stable”. Grazie all accoppiamento anche con compiz 0.6.2 questa release dovrebbe correggere vari bug e implementare nuove funzioni.

Vediamo di dare una risposta!
Se utilizzate Ubuntu 7.10, da Sistema->Preferenze->Aspetto->Effetti visivi potete scegliere tra le modalità “Nesuno”, “Normale” o “Extra” ma non è possibile personalizzare i vari effetti.
Per fare ciò è necessario installare il pacchetto :
compizconfig-settings-manager
da synaptic o da terminale con
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Al completamento dell’installazione troverete la voce “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings” nel menu Sistema->Preferenze e da qui potete abilitare, disabilitare e personalizzare i vari plugin di CompizFusion.

Il pacchetto compiz-fusion è preinstallato già di serie in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. Per poter accedere a tutti gli spettacolari effetti del noto programma occorre abilitare la voce di configurazione Advanced Desktop Effect settings installando, tramite synaptic il pacchetto compizconfig-settings-manager.

Un truc sympa chez Compiz-fusion (comme chez Beryl et Compiz), vous avez la possibilité de mettre un fond au delà du cube.
Je ne sais pas trop si je suis clair...
Cette partie s'appelle le skydome, il peut être animé ou non. C'est le top quand il peut être "animé" parce que lorsque vous faîtes tourner le cube, vous avez l'impression de tourner au coeur d'un paysage ou autre.

Pour ceux qui commencent à paniquer à l'idée de trifouiller dans les réglages de Compiz, rassurez-vous, j'ai ce qu'il faut à portée de main !
Au hasard de mon surf, je suis tombé sur un petit plugin Firefox plus qu'intéressant : Compiz Images Extension.
Ce petit plugin autorise un clic droit "Set as skydome image"... Vous avez deviné la suite ?
En effet, vous pouvez directement en surfant trouver votre skydome et l'installer sans complications.

En circulant sur le net, j'ai trouvé une petite astuce pour lancer "correctement" Compiz-fusion au démarrage d'une session.
Auparavant, j'avais toujours des bugs sur le décorateur de fenêtres. Emerald se lançait de temps en temps sinon, Metacity prenait le dessus et il fallait que je relance Emerald.
Ma petite astuce s'appelle Fusion-icon. C'est un outil qui est présent dans le systray, un peu à la manière du "diamant" de Beryl. En effet, il permet de choisir différentes options, de lancer le centre de configuration de compiz (ccm) et le gestionnaire de thèmes Emerald.
Le petit plus de Fusion-icon est de pouvoir le lancer au démarrage de la session, il va s'occuper de lancer Compiz-fusion et Emerald (si vous avez choisi Emerald à la place de Metacity).
Malheureusement, ce n'est pas si facile. Le paquet fusion-icon n'est pas présent dans les dépôts Ubuntu, il faut faire quelques manipulations pour le récupérer et le compiler.

Compiz fusion es el escritorio 3D para linux, el proyecto surgió luego de que Beryl y Compiz se unieran entre si.
Alguas novedades que incluye son:
Más estable al contar con Compiz como núcleo.
Plugins nuevos, como Expo Wall, que permite colocar los escritorios en una pared virtual (similar al Spaces de Mac OS X) o pintar con fuego, que permite dibujar usando fuego sobre el escritorio.
Efectos de reflejo tanto en el skydome del cubo y en el suelo del plugin Expo Wall.
Desarrollo más rápido, dado que ahora los desarrolladores de ambos proyectos, Beryl y Compiz, trabajan en uno solo.
La primera versión estable será la próxima Compiz Fusion 0.6.0, por lo que se aconseja esperar un poquito mas para evitar dolores de cabezas.

Cómo, no había salido ya? Pues no, porque la versión que descargamos e instalamos, era un “pre-release”, y por eso, tenía tantos bugs (uno de los cuales era el pobre performance con algunos plugins).
Pero alégrense, que Compiz Fusion (0.5.2) por fin se encuentra disponible, y trae consigo un montón de mejoras y nuevas caracteristicas.
Entre las novedades (pueden ver todas aqui) tenemos plugins como Firepaint (inútil, realmente), un mejor zoom, Desktop Expo (muy bueno), Cube Atlantis y Gear (variaciones del Cube, que pueden ver en la foto); además de un montón de mejoras en funcionalidad y performance.
Sé que todo es más que nada por “placer visual”, pero detrás de tanto resplandor, la funcionalidad añadida con Compiz Fusion, si es que tenemos una buena tarjeta de video (nvidia, de preferencia), hace que valga la pena.

Este es el nuevo logo e imagen de la compañía gestora de ventanas en 3d Compiz Fusión,son como dos caminos que se unen con un objetivo en común,o por lo menos es eso lo que se deduce,bastante original,por lo menos no he visto algo similar. Esto marca una nueva era en la compañía resultado de la fusión entre Compiz y Beryl,marcando a sus rivales que se vienen con todo de ahora en adelante,después de un comienzo un poco lento,se empiezan a poner las pilas y nos muestran de a poco sus estrategias de marketing,ahora que dicen los internautas de la nueva imagen?,eso habra que esperarlo un poco.
Los típicos efectos tridimensionales o de transparencias en los escritorios de Mac (y ahora también en Vista) tienen una brillante y prometedora contrapartida linuxera en Compiz (los llamados desktop-effects que trae Ubuntu Feisty: Sistema -> Preferencias -> Efectos de escritorio) y Beryl, que en este caso hay que instalar manualmente.
O mejor, elige la combinación de ambos proyectos: Compiz Fusion.
Existen varios sistemas (como es habitual en Linux) para instalar Compiz Fusion (en cualquier caso necesitas tener activada la aceleración gráfica y Beryl instalado) La más sencilla que conozco:

Some of you who visit my blog every so often knows that I have been running Linux Mint 3.0 on my PC. Well, this is not longer truth. I have decided to move on and reinstalled Linux Mint 3.0 with Sidux Tartaros. I was quite happy with Mint, however because it is so easy to move from one linux distribution to another within pretty much half an hour, I wanted to give Sidux Tartaros a go. So after about half an hour from booting Sidux LiveCD I was up and running Tartaros with the most common applications I use - KDE Kontact, Kopete, Skype, extra codecs, java, keeping all my settings and having fully functional system.
Because Sidux doens’t contain Beryl, which I used to use in Linux Mint 3.0, I had to have a look what else is available for me to improve the interaction between my person and the desktop. As usual, I didn’t have to surf for long to find Compiz Fussion.
Compiz Fussion is a development version of Compiz, it contains latest bugfixes as well as not-yet discovered bug
Aunque todavía se trata de una versión en desarrollo y por tanto inestable, los usuarios más atrevidos de Ubuntu Feisty ya pueden jugar con Compiz Fusion, que no es otra cosa que Compiz más Beryl: los efectos más espectaculares de escritorio que existen actualmente.
