I've been so unbelievably lazy coming to work these days. I'm not slacking off in office mind you. I'm working hard. But I just can't find satisfaction in what I'm doing anymore. It's getting on my nerve thinking that I might be doing these things for few more years.
And so, on my day-off, laying in my bed... I'm thinking what I'm supposed to do to rekindle this spirit

How to create own compassA normal compass exists out a small weak magnet in the form of an arrow. That floats on water. Now to make our own compass we need:-water (in a big glass or something else).-a needle.-a cork or a piece of floating and light material.First fill your glass with water. Now cut a piece of the cork and but it on the water.Make sure it floatsNext you take a needle and make it magnetic. There 2 fast ways to do this.-rub it over your clothes-rub it over a magnet in strait lines, repeating the same line for about 15 timesNow that the needle is magnetic you put it carefully on the cork or other floating material you used. After 30 sec you will notice it is pointing to the north. To make sure take the cork and needle out of the water.Lay the needle different on the cork and put it

Q. Who is the inventor of compass? Is it true that a compass never shows north and south accurately?A. No one knows the name of the actual inventor of compass. But it is said that approximately 1,000 years ago in China a magnetized needle came to be used to find directions.Because the earth itself is a gigantic magnet, the needle of a compass is always pointed at its pole. But it does not show the earth’s geographic poles. Hence, to the extent a compass is inaccurate, one can say. It is to be remembered that the geographic and magnetic poles of the earth are not at the same location. In north the geographic pole is 1,600 kilometers away from the magnetic pole. In the same way in south the distance between the geographic and magnetic poles is 2,570 kilometers. The people using a compass d

Stealing a page from the brilliantly simplistic Review in Haiku, I present to you my Golden Compass review in 17 syllables. RIH is so detailed with it's commitment to simplicity that I am awed. There are but five grades (Awesome, Good, Okay, Bad and Awful) given. The post tags don't exceed two - the year (or decade for pre-2000 films) and the grade. The "reviews" are the obvious 17 syllables, a picture and a grade. That's it, every time. Gimmicky? Sure. But it's awesome, and I only wish I had thought of it first. Anyway, here's The Golden Compass:"Where is double O?No religion ruckus herePolar bear fight rocks."Fletch's Film Rating:"You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you."

Film adaptations don't come much more sanitised than ?The Golden Compass'. Based on Philip Pullman's controversial ?His Dark Materials' trilogy, New Line had a fantastic opportunity to create something moving, thrilling and earth-shatteringly profound. This is a trilogy which (gracefully) attacks the corruption and hypocrisy of organised religion and its abuse of power, one which provides an infinite possibility of adventure through infinite possible worlds and one which ingeniously represents our nature and growth by taking place in a world where our souls (called ?daemons') are external animal manifestations.
New Line didn't seem to recognise this and instead seemingly opted to make a straightforward blockbuster out of ?Northern Lights'. Or maybe they did, but as soon as the American Christian fundamentalists started to light their torches and sharpen their pitchforks, they promptly took the book to the guillotine and exorcised it of any heretic material. Arizona day 2 was a lot of fun. I took my niece out to the mall where we looked at stores and items that we could not afford. Found puppy dogs we both wanted to buy and saw the worst movie ever made.
To say that “The Golden Compass” was bad is an understatement of biblical scale. Everything from the acting to the special affects to the musical score sucked. When it ended we cheered because we were so bored and ready to leave the theatre that we bound from our seats and ran out shaking our heads.
The acting: I think Nicole kidman is hot, always have. She was hot in this movie but her acting was plastic. The little girl who Lyra played by Dakota Blue Richards was cute and she wasn’t so bad. The only actor who seemed to know how to act was Sam Elliott who is the ultimate cowboy in any movie.
The score: The score should accompany a movie, never overwhelm it and above all never really be an actor in the movie. Great scores like Braveheart can set the mood, help develop a

The Golden Compass is the first part to His Dark Materials, a trilogy of novels by controversial British author Phillip Pullman, who considers his writings to be an antithesis of C.S.Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. I read another article on Yahoo about Mike Huckabee. It says, "Now that he's a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, he's being asked anew about some of the views and comments he expressed in the survey by The Associated Press."The article goes on to compare his old views to actions that have been taken by our government, and recent things that have been said."When asked whether the U.S. should take any action to kill Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Huckabee replied: "The U.S. should not kill Saddam Hussein or anyone else." The U.S. military captured Saddam, an Iraqi court convicted him and he was hanged last December."Ooh, I guess since we did it, Huckabee must have been wrong. There's no possible way that Bush's vendetta could have been ill-conceived. And perhaps Huckabee meant that we should stop Hussein without killing him. How childish. To be clear, my point is that just because the U.S. did something someone was against, it doesn't make that person wr

The Golden Compass turned did tinny box-office this weekend. Even if it only drops off 50%, it would take over ten weeks in release to recoup its cost in the domestic market. That's not counting the riot damage in Pakistan.
A major disappointment.
The script by Chris Weitz (”About a Boy“) is based on first story of Philip Pullman’s 1995 bestselling (in UK) trilogy novel, His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass.
The plot: The story is set in an alternative world where people’s souls manifest themselves as animals (a.k.a. “daemons”), a 12-year old orphan girl Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards) is at the center of it. A mysterious organization known as Gobblers kidnapped Lyra’s friend Roger (Ben Walker), and she sets out to try to rescue him, but winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world, but ours as well. Her uncle Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) is a scientist, a scholar at Jordan College, Oxford, England. He believes he discovered a gate into other dimensions and solicits the powerful Magisterium to subsidise an expedition to the Magnetic North to verify his theory. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott and Ian McShane headline an all-star cast.
If you've been avoiding The Golden Compass because you don't want to see a bunch of anti-Christian themes portrayed on the silver screen for the consumption of children, don't worry. If you're worried about seeing another mediocre holiday fantasy film, you're probably a little closer to the truth. Don't get me wrong - the special effects were great; the acting, especially Dakota Blue Richards, was decent. But there's a basic thing you want in a fantasy film that was missing here: story. I just never felt drawn into a story until the final scene, and even that left more question marks than answers. There were a couple of compelling scenes, both involving a talking polar bear voiced by none other than Sir Ian McKellen. I liked it O.K., but I didn't love it. And I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to films. So if you're on the fence you might want to hold off 'til it comes out on video.
Now the book, that could
Zzzzzzzzzz...The Golden Compass, written and directed by Chris Weitz. Starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Dakota Blue Richards. New Line Cinema, 2007. Rated PG-13. USCCB Rating is AII--Adults and Adolescents.Read other reviews here. When you fight over something with which you're unfamiliar, you run the risk of fighting over nothing. Such is the case with The Golden Compass, which recently sent Catholic bloggers into a tizzy. But the movie doesn't deserve the attention. It barely deserves this review. I've read the novel, yet even I couldn't figure out what was going on in this film. Here's my best attempt at a summary: in an alternate universe much like ours but with more CGI, people's souls manifest as talking animal companions called daemons. Ruling over this otherworld is an oppressive hierarchy known as the Magisterium, which is guilty of the unforgivable sin of (horrors!) telling people what to do. In other words, it's a sort of government with vaguely religious overto
Let’s be clear: translating a book to the screen is hard, really hard and it shouldn’t be underestimated. Things you can get away with in a book you simply can’t on film for a range of reasons. It’s not the same medium, you have less time and, in some cases, things that are palatable in book form just aren’t in the American dominated world of film.
So Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy was always going to be a struggle with its open pop at organised religion and its themes around the nature of authority, death, the purpose of existence and even a light sprinkling of teenage sex.
For this, and the curious decision to keep the US title for the UK release, I approached the first instalment with caution. I was surprised. In a good way.
Granted Chris Weitz has, at first glance, bottled the aspects of the story that dealt with religion. Instead he’s opted to turn the anti-authoritarian aspect of the film up to eleven but, to be quite frank,
People will react to The Golden Compass differently. I therefore rate it a/an:
"A" for ACLU members. "B-" for doctrinaire atheists. "C" for agnostics. "C-" for deists. "D+" if you're still impressed by CG special effects. "D" for Ozzy Osbourne fans. "D-" for everybody else.
To my free-thinking friends: I'm sorry to report that you'll have to wait until next year for your Winter Solstice classic. To those who, under the edict of your slave masters, plan on avoiding The Golden Compass (TGC): Don't worry that you're depriving your children of fine entertainment, for TGC is the most relentlessly dreary and unsatisfying children's movie since the Dick Cheney version of Miracle on 34th Street.
Let's get the plot out of the way:
TGC is set in an alternative Britain ruled by an all-powerful theocratic government called the "Magisterium." The distinguishing feature of this world is that people's "souls" exist outside of their bodies as animals called "Daemons."
A noble, Lord
Newcomer Dakota Blue Richards stars as the young Lyra, who's cast herself at the center of her society's greatest conflict -- the struggle between science and religion -- in writer/director Chris Weitz's fantasy film adaptation of the popular children's novel by Philip Pullman.
I thought it was ok. Before every movie I watch I see a review on it at Spill.com it’s a really cool site that does movie reviews, so far every review they do has been accurate I my opinion. They said that it was ok, I thought it was ok. It could have been better [...]
I went to see The Golden Compass on this snowy Friday after noon. Strangely, I did not saw or heard young children because it’s rated PG-13 and with reasons. I just found out while looking at the imdb site. I would had taught that it you had been a great English(few here) movie for older students.
Anyway, the movie is based on a book which I did not read. That fact let me watched the movie without any preconception. Reading the comment on the imdb, the person(reader) was not happy about the movie versus the book. For me, I liked the story line even if it’s like another Narnia in the making. It’s for a young audience even if I saw many grayed hair movie fans.
After seeing 13 minutes of previews, the movie started. I will be short here but it’s a PG-13. Many are killed which surprised me but now I know. The effects were okay but the bears were too computer animated. I know, it’s hard to do. I imagine that in few years, they will have better results. It
