The hot new sleekness from Taiwan's HTC has finally landed on US soil. And, it available through CompUSA, of all places. We're not knocking CompUSA here, but we would have thought the HTC Touch Diamond would be available through a big-box retailer with a larger US footprint than the CompUSA chain. Regardless, it looks like the [...]

Last year I wrote a post about a rumor saying Compusa going out of business. It turned out that it was true indeed. What I am about to write here is not a rumor at all. In fact Compusa is going to re-open 15 stores plus a new one in Florida! Here is the news [...]

CompUSA died a sputtering, inglorious death, but Ohio-based Systemax (which owns TigerDirect) didn't shell out $30M to pick up the pieces for nothing: it's just announced that it's re-opening 15 US stores and opening a new one, 13 of which are in Florida. We're not sure why the Sunshine State faces the brunt of CompUSA's angry zombie wrath -- do retirees enjoy being ripped off?* -- but Texans and Puerto Ricans can join in the fun with four stores of their very own. These are all apparently open now -- anyone brave enough to check out the scene? *Rejected asides: "Is this punishment for that Pitbull record?" "Guess you don't need braiiiiiins to pay these prices!" "Screw you, Mickey!"[Thanks, Steven]Read | Permalink | Email this

This really sucks for us in Richmond. We have no big chain computer stores here. All we have are Circuit City and BestBuy. It would be nice to have a Fry's Electronics here, but that is not going to happen anytime soon. I used to shop at CompUSA often when i lived in Austin Texas as well as in Southeast Texas. CompUSA is the latest casualty in this 'robust' economy today.Consumer electronics retailer CompUSA said Friday it will close its store operations after the holidays following sale of the company to Gordon Brothers Group LLC, a restructuring firm. Stores that can't be sold will be closed.Gordon Brothers will also try to sell the company's technical services business, CompUSA TechPro, and online business, CompUSA.com. It would be up to the buyers whether to continue the CompUSA name. It's almost certain competition from Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart were the final nails in the coffin for CompUSA.
It has been announced that CompUSA is closing up shop. It was sold to the Gordon Brothers Group, a private equity firm and as a result they will close the remaining 103 stores in the United States. C|Net’s report says to:
“Forget Black Friday. For the best deals on gadgets and PCs this holiday season, look no further than your neighborhood CompUSA.”
But earlier in the year, when CompUSA closed half of their stores, the deals weren’t that great. I hate to see any computer business go under, but CompUSA has consistently been overpriced compared to many other companies, so it is no surprise they are going out of business. I rarely shopped at a CompUSA due to their high prices.
Crackdown, the game I love to hate. I beat the game within a day, but, that is not what the game was all about. It takes the Grand Theft Auto idea of a sandbox game to a whole new level. Yeah, you can complete missions, but there is races, hidden things to find, tons of free items on the Live Marketplace to add (as soon as you pop the game in for the first time you will literally be bombarded by updates). I never felt that $60 was a good price for this game, but.. for $17.49, this is quite a deal and a half. Looking for a game to mess around with until Halo 3 and the other big name titles are out, couldn’t afford BioShock yet, then pick up Crackdown right now, it is worth the 18 bucks. Since CompUSA went out of business their availability is limited (nothing in southern california) but there are some available around the country.Shipping is $5 so it really is only a good deal if you do in store pickup (or buy a ton of cards)...1600 Point card4000 Point cardGood luck guys.Sign up, shop, and get paid with FatWallet Cash Back!

I’ve known it all along. But of course, I’m just a poor Mac-phile, forced to use the one aisle in the CompUSA. This poor SOB got reamed, and he’s a huge customer by comparison! Apparently he bought a ton of stuff at a CompUSA going out of biz, including a Canon digital camera for $269. His total sale that day more than $3300. So he goes to give the camera to his kid, and she opens it up to find no camera. Everything was in the box but the camera. So he takes it back to an open CompUSA, where they basically tell him where to put said box. He then writes to the pres of CompUSA, only to get a letter back telling him it’s his fault for not inspecting the box. Talk about buyer beware!

CompUSA has announced that they are closing 126 of their 229 stores. The goal is to help them focus on their top stores. The closures began last week and will continue through the summer. Basically the changing way of consumers purchase electronics are the real reasoning. A significant portion of consumer retail electronic sales come from the Internet. I like CompUSA but always thought they were too overpriced and so I can see this change of business. Apple has the most to lose as they will loose two percent of its retail locations.
CompUSA, Inc. on January 24, 2007 announced TechProLive to provide consumers with around-the-clock top-notch technical support from the convenience of customers' homes or businesses. The service offers highly qualified CompUSA TechPro specialists who assist consumers through phone and Web-based technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including major holidays.
In anticipation of upgrade needs and questions surrounding Windows Vista or Microsoft Office 2007, CompUSA is also offering a special 30 days of unlimited technical support for only $29.99.
"There are a lot of exciting new technology products on the market and we have seen a growing demand from consumers for additional technology support," said Carlos Fojo, senior director, technology services, CompUSA. "We believe TechProLive answers this need by making technical support easier for the customer with immediate access to qualified technicians who can diagnose and repair computer problems"
Beginning January 30th, customers who are interested in upgrading to Windows Vista or Microsoft Office 2007 can do so via CompUSA and they will include a Windows Vista Experience Guarantee. If users bring in their comptuer for a free compability evaluation by 3PM on January 29th and they purchase Windows Vista or Office 2007 together will installation, they will get this guarantee which is basically states:
“Customers will enjoy the overall performancce and features of Windows Vista or Microsoft Office 2007 or it will refund the purchase price of the software and reinstall the original operating system. CompUSA TechPros will provide professional upgrades plus installation giving customers the peace-of-mind of receiving a guaranteed experience.”
Here's something that's sure to spark some (well, maybe only a few) people's memories...Remember that day our friend, who I will anonymously refer to as Allyson, looked at her Caller ID and said, "Who's compusa?". Well, it so happen that it was yours truly calling from my work alma mater... the infamous CompUSA and that joke lived on for at least two more months forever ingraining the word "compusa" in my mind as I forged my way to work every day at the geek-haven sporting my red shirt, emblazoned gold name tag and proud sign on my shoulder that said "Hello I am Eric. Call me Dork."Well, it's sad because as much as I enjoyed those days it appears CompUSA is going to be closing 128 stores across the nation. The smaller cities are supposed to remain. It makes me wonder what's being said at these board meetings when they're deliberating over the fate of 50+ faithful disgruntled employees in Knoxville selling DDR-667 Mhz RAM, 256mb PCI-Express Video Cards, and overpriced IEEE-1384 (
