This is ridiculous. A 'good' Catholic could always tell the priest he voted for McCain and recieve communion. Then later on can go to confession and be absolved of their sin of lying to the priest...

(Columbia, SC) A local priest drew a line in the sand yesterday, when he told his parishioners that if they voted for Barack Obama, they should not accept communion. “You support Obama, you support abortion. No body of Christ for you!” said Father Jay Scott.President-elect Obama immediately fired back at the father. “If the good father insists on manhandling my supporters, then I

Years ago, the Catholic Church has developed the “Anglican Use” liturgy, which resembles a mix between the Tridentine Mass and the Old English language. It was designed to welcome disenchanted Anglican Protestants back into the Catholic Communion, but its use has been strictly limited to parishes in the United States in communities where the [...]

While I have some appreciation that AMiA has concerns about what it means to faithfully witness to Jesus, I generally think unity, that for which Jesus prayed, is a larger theological issue than differing views on human sexuality. Even if one desired to voice dissent, something for which I always want to maintain space, I question the decision of the hundreds of bishops that are boycotting the La

Last week, when Pope Benedict celebrated Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, Rudy Giuliani came forward and received communion (not from His Holiness but from another priest). And so the fight starts again. As I understand it, a priest may justifiably deny the sacrament in a case when administering it would cause scandal -- the calling into disrepute of the Church or one of its precepts, the fostering of the idea that sin is not sin. If a priest, per absurdum, were to observe a person in the communion line turn and kill the person behind him and then present himself to receive the sacrament, that priest would be free to -- indeed, I think, would be obliged to -- refuse to administer the sacrament to him. Not only would the priest in that case know that the killer was in a state of

The Daily Kos is crying hypocrisy as Nancy Pelosi was refused in Washington. However there are key differences. Sister Margaret had spent weeks preparing the first grade children for their first Communion, stressing the solemnity and importance of this sacrament. Much to her chagrin, during Mass on the big day, one boy in the front row was talking and giggling nonstop. Finally, unable to put up with it any longer, she whispered to the lad seated next to her, "Please go up there and tell that one he's done enough talking and had better stop, right now!"Without question, the boy rose and walked to the front and delivered Sister Margaret's message to the surprised priest in the middle of his sermon!
COMMUNION WITH GOD Now that you are a child of God and have taken the step of being water baptized, what’s next? You know you have a relationship with God as your Father, but do you really know what that means? As a son or daughter of God, you have the awesome privilege of actually getting to commune with Him. It means you get to be a part of what God is doing, to share in His work here on the earth. It implies a close, intimate fellowship with the very God of the universe! Pretty mind-boggling, isn’t it? God wants to have fellowship with you! The all-powerful God of the universe desires to have a close, intimate relationship with you. He wants to be involved in all aspects of your life, and He wants you to willingly share your life with Him. He even made you in His image
The following is a guest post by Janet Donahue. Communion dress shopping season is upon us. This can be a really fun time, but it can be extremely stressful too. Every year we see one group stand out as the most stressed - the mothers of extra-fluffy girls. (Our customers have expressed appreciation for our term of "extra fluffy" over and over again. It's a little less insulting and better descriptive.) These families soon found out when shopping that there are many Communion dress choices for the typical girl who wears a size 6, 7 or 8 - even a 10. Every manufacturer of girls' dresses turns out white Communion dresses for the spring season in these sizes. But not all girls are these sizes. In fact, our experience tells us that a very large percentage are not! Who is the ext

Standing in front of the congregation with the choir, I am only dimly aware of my voice lilting through the dusty eaves and the mahogany benches. The people seem more excited than usual; the ever-present "i'm only here because I don't want to go directly to hell" arm-crossers are at a pleasant minimum.I like the times like this.I can watch all of the eager faces smiling as they sing along with us, their voices straining for the high notes but making up for it with the glory of enthusiasm. I try to hold back a grin as I watch the eyes of a little girl in the third pew widen as her father's voice suddenly bursts to life, his deep bass loud and booming underneath the harmonies that flit from us to them and back again. And when the song is over, I turn back to the priest and bow my head. the smile on my face relaxes a bit as I think of the week's events. of my failures. of my sisters and brothers around me.I wonder if i'm going to skip the eucharist again this week. it just feels so tr

Video of Ricsson’s First Holy Communion
To a Catholic the Mass is not only a sacred offering; it is also a sacred meal. That is why Jesus chose to use bread and wine for it. In this way, God shows his love and friendship for us by inviting us to eat “the bread [...]
Ricsson finally had his First Holy Communion on 29th September 2007, last Saturday, during the 6pm Mass. He was so excited about it. He looked so smart on that day.
Although it was said that wearing white is not compulsory, I think everybody was wearing white on that day. After the [...]
Ricsson’s First Holy Communion is finally over. His Holy Communion was on 29th September 2007. As the group is very big, there were split into two session, one on Saturday and another on Sunday.
I remembered my own First Holy Communion was in Church of St. Francis of Assisi. It was a better organized session than this one. It was rather on last Saturday when Ricsson had his Holy Communion. During my time, my Holy Communion was considered more memorable and meaningful than this. There were speech given by the priest and the sisters. I wonder where are all the sisters now. Nowadays I do not see any sisters or nuns in church. Sisters used to teach in the church also, but now, I never see any at all at St. Anthony Church.
My Holy Communion was a better one. After the mass, there were group photo-taking. There were individual photo-taking by the photographers too. At St Anthony, there were photographers on the day, but there was no any strict procedures. I saw the
On the night He was betrayed, Jesus took bread and gave it to His disciples, and said, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is My Body which will be given up for you.”

What follows is a short exchange with "btate0121" on the meaning of Holy Communion, and then a brief rebuttal to what "BlackCalvinist" interjected in refutation of what I had been presenting. BC hasn't written back yet. I imagine he's probably tired of this debate, since he did a lot of debating with Catholics in the past. At any rate, if he responds I'll make an update."btate0121" will be in gray/silver. "BC" will be in brown. - - - - - -Hi guys. Please don't stone me. But I'd like some clarity on the role of Communion in the life of a modern day Christian. I understand that it's taken to remind ourselves of the sacrifice made by Jesus, but i'm confused by the SPIRITUAL benefits and in particular the ramifications for taking it out of place. I know this is a broad question, and it's designed to be that way because i'm looking for a lesson on this instead of a specific answer. so if someone could please take the time to explain the whole thing in entirety (and please don't be
This is serious although it sounds sort of joking...do you belive she hears your prayers? I mean, in order for her to hear all the prayers she would have to be omnipotent and omnipresent right?Well, not necessarily. I don't really know how it works, but I do know that, in virtue of being spirits in heaven, they are aware of our prayers. I say "aware" because, technically speaking, words like "seeing" and "hearing" are inaccurate. A soul without a body (and thus without eyes and ears) can neither "see", nor "hear." Really, these words just reflect an awareness that the saints have of our prayers. There are various passages of Scripture that show that the angels are indeed aware of and respond to what happens to us on earth:Psa 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.Mt 18:10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.Lk 15:7-10 Just so, I te
Today I was at Greyfriars Church in Lanark making the final settings on their new sound desk as they put it all to use during today’s worship. I was also helping a young man called Ben to find his way around the new sound desk and laptop. He’ll be running the show from next week.
The service was great. It was Sunday School prize-giving, dedication of a beautiful new pulpit fall and communion. For the first time the children took their rightful place in that sacrament. What a difference it makes when the whole family of the church are together. The liturgy had two young girls asking questions of the minister. Why do we do this? What is it we are doing? Why bread and wine? The service had a simplicity which made it accessible but also deep and poignant.
Ricsson is having his Holy Communion this year, somewhere in September. Parents will be informed at a later date on the details of the Holy Communion. The last time he had his special occasion in the church was his baptism, when he was a baby. The next sacraments he is going through is Holy Communion.I been through this stage too. I still remember my Holy Communion. I have the the photographs. I do not remember who had taken the photographs. My mother was with me. She was beside me all the while, walking beside me while I was holding on to a candle, walking into the church. The archbishop, Gregory Yong was there at that time.Prior to the Holy Communion, my mother had to go shopping for my Holy Communion white dress and hat. My Holy Communion hat was a hand woven one, order to make by my mother’s friend. I forgot how much it cost. If I am not wrong, it was about $10-$15. I still remember how it looked like, but I had lost the hat now. My Holy Communion white dress was bought at
On Sunday I will preside at communion for the first time. I’m a little nervous, a little excited and a little scared in case I make a mess of it!
I’m not a minister. I’m a youth worker. I do quite a bit of preaching but I have no formal theological training. The fact that I am allowed to conduct communion in the United Reformed Church speaks volumes about their real belief in what might be called ‘the priesthood of all believers’, that is that everyone who believes has a ministry.
The Church of Scotland, the denomination I grew up in, says it believes in the priesthood of all believers but retains a very definite divide between the ordained ministry of ‘word and sacrament’ (proper ministry) and all the rest.
I don’t get it. Where does Jesus say ‘Do this to remember me, but only if you have a theology degree.’? He didn’t. He said that whenever we gather around the table we should take bread and remember his
As some of you know I’ve been writing a series of handouts for our church, trying to get them to re-think some things. It’s easy to get complacent, to let traditions and “that’s the way we’ve always done it” set in. Recently I decided to change communion from every week to once a month and have it coincide with our alredy monthly Family Dinner. Being the new guy I had a fresh pair of eyes. We had been doing it every week. It was a ritual. It was almost a social time the way they had been doing it. So, I changed it to shake things up a bit and to get them to think about why we do it, what it is, all of that. To add to it I wrote up this handout. I’ve been thinking a lot about communion for a while and have loads more to discuss than whats in this flyer. Maybe those things will come up as well. But for now, here is the blurb I wrote up.

The Choristers sang this anthem on Easter Sunday:
Risen Lord, risen Lord.
Give us a heart for simple things,
Love, laughter, bread, wine, and dreams.
Fill us with green growing hope:
Risen Lord, risen Lord.
Make us a people whose song is Alleluia,
Whose sign is peace and whose name is love:
Risen lord, risen Lord.
Give us a heart for simple things
And to sing Alleluia.

I had never realized this before, but some denominations think communion is really important. When I was having a discussion with a certain someone, the aforementioned said if you don't take communion, you're starving yourself spiritually. Now, personally, I never thought about communion that way. I thought of it as (and still do) as a way to remember what Jesus did for us. How he came to earth and sacrificed his body and blood. I don't remember anything in the bible saying that communion is spiritual food. I just glanced through my Bible at some passages where communion is mentioned. Jesus instituted it in Matt 26:26. I read through that, and I'm not exactly sure why you would say communion is 'spiritual food'. It seems to me that 'spiritual food' is meditation on the word of God, prayer with God, and discussing things with fellow Christians. Just thought that an interesting little topic.
