Continuing with the theme of our afternoon open thread, here's a choice bit from a Washington Post article: The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer. The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years. "We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. Trying to beat the stock market is theoretically a zero-sum game (for every winner, there must be a loser), but after the substantial costs of investing are deducted, it becomes a loser’s game. A common sense approach to data security as applied to offshore accounting service
One of the first things you hear about offshoring is that it would increase the potential for data theft. Let us assess this perception in a common sense way. When we talk about any "increase" we have to say compared to what. In this case the CPA has to assess the data security for on-shore operations before he can assess the increased risk posed by offshoring. What is the typical level of data security in a small business or a CPA office? Since there are few staff members, there is little separation of duties. Such lack of separation encourages internal security problems. The data resides in paper files. Paper files are vulnerable to fire and water damage. The office is not physically secure. Staff members, leasing office personnel, and janitors have keys to the office. Any of them can co

My Grandfather and Grandmother on my dad's side of the Family came here from Poland and did not speak English, or knew very little.  But eventually they learned the language, same goes for many immigrant families.  You see, they learned that that learning English means that you can function better in society and earn more money.  This was not forced upon them or any of the other various immigrants that made this country great.  But to be part of the Great Melting Pot that is the United States, you need to assimilate and learn English.  And Paul Jacob believes that in order to do this, the government has to get out of the way and let the free market work and the majority of the immigrants

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge.) His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. However, for the unwary, credit cards are also means of encouraging higher consumption which is not always needed.Educated consuming is always recommended and is strongly advised in the case of credit cards as well.A couple of do’s and don’ts for a more efficient use of credit cards:DON’TS 1. Do not pay on installmentsPaying on installments often helps buy that desired item today instead of in a couple of months. But paying on installments also has a few major disadvantages. Paying on installments creates an illusion of extra funds which, in turn, can be used to purchase another item, on installments of course. This method of purchase quickly leads to lose of con

      Common Sense Credit
The term “common sense” is a misnomer. Some people believe that it is common sense to get only one credit card. Other people believe that credit cards are evil and, therefore, it is common sense to never own a credit card. Still, others believe that credit cards are a necessity in today’s financial times and, therefore, it is common sense to own more than one credit card. Who is right? The truth is that they could all be right, and they could all be wrong. Everybody has a different situation, therefore, “common sense” for their situation will dictate. My “common sense” tells me that most of us will buy a home and/or a car in our lives. Therefore, unless you are paying cash, you will need to have established some kind of a credit score in order to qualify for the loan that is necessary to pay for these things. Common Sense 101 Or: Conservatism For Dummies (or Libs)
Often the best way to make a point - especially to a socialist/liberal - is to keep it simple. They like quick anecdotes with a straight-to-the-point message. This one illustrates the basic difference between a conservative and a liberal. A conservative and a liberal were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person. The conservative gave the homeless person his business card, and told him to come to his office for a job interview. The conservative then took $20 out of his own pocket, and gave it to the homeless person. The liberal was very impressed, so when they came to another homeless person, he decided to help. The liberal walked over to the homeless person, and gave him directions to the welfare office. The liberal then reached into the conservative's pocket, and took out $20. The liberal kept $15 for his administrative fees, and gave the homeless person $5.

Finding Identity Theft Protection In Good Old Common Sense
It seems as if every time you turn on the TV news these days, there is some story at least once or twice a week about some new identity theft scam. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes of this decade and if you have not taken pro-active steps to protect your identify, it is not a matter of "if" it will happen to you, but "when".First let's review what happens in an identify theft crime. A thief gets enough of your personal information to be able to open accounts in your name. It's really as simple as that. Such information would include items that would normally be used to open a new account somewhere such as your social security number, your driver's license number, and with some accounts, even less information may be required, as surprising as that sounds. Once the thief has opened the new accounts such as Visa cards, department store cards, even personal loans, the thief gets as much money as he can on those accounts, then disappears into the sunset. Virginity test an obvious loss of common sense
A controversial plan to conduct virginity tests on female high school students in the West Java regency of Indramayu has been dropped following strong objections from students, parents and activists, as reported by The Jakarta Post on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007.The idea of the test came from Regent Irianto MS Syafiudin after a 16-year-old girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend, both students of state senior high schools in the regency, were caught having sex on video. The proposal has been turned down, but the regent's initiative reminds me of a test once in place in our educational system. Comments - Noise - Common Sense - Good Practice
A second post about Sony and their Playstation blog so soon after my blog review post on the two Sony blogs, I hear you cry? Well, yes, but it’s a great example of dealing with a situation that has arisen on the blog, so I just had to. (And no, I’m not angling for a free game!) As you might expect, Sony’s Playstation blog has been attracting a lot of comments, a situation that most of us no doubt view with a tinge of envy. However, it seems that a lot of the comments have been rather too off topic and the “noise” factor has been deafening, drowning out relevant comments on the posts. Effectively it’s been creating a free for all ‘bulletin board’ type of feel which isn’t great in a blog environment. Following a number of requests from their readers, Sony have decided to take steps to reduce this, and they announced what they were intending to do about it in a post from Patrick Seybold which stated: Since we launched the blog we have

Pay off your debts. Clean up your finance before you invest. Do not trade until you understand the market and what it offers. Learn about investing and the different kinds of investment before you jump in. Know yourself. Understand your risk tolerance and formulate your investment strategy based on your risk profile, goals, and timeframe. Have a solid strategy. Did you do 1, 2, and 3 above? The bass boat Bubba bought is nice, but the investments Einstein bought allow him to later have a yacht. Bubba wasted a tank full of gas in his truck to save twenty dollars, driving from store to store, yet it takes over thirty dollars to fill his tank. Einstein researched the best prices online and then had his purchase shipped to his front door. Less time, no gas, and less money are a few of the ways Einstein beat Bubba. Bubba looks at petty cash much differently than Einstein. Bubba buys fifteen dollars worth of video rentals every week. That’s sixty dollars a month. Einstein puts sixty dollars into an automatic investment that purchases stock for him. Bubba believes in entitlement

American Food Safety Issues: The Death of Common Sense
As some of you foodies out there may know, in March 2007 the food conglomerate ConAgra had to recall its Peter Pan Peanut Butter products due to salmonella content.  This morning, I happened upon a consumer advocate website called SPOCKO'S BRAIN.  The site has a post called frightening food facts.  What caught my eye about this post was the revelation that the "federal government can issue mandatory recalls for tires and toys but not food...except for baby formula..."  Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa???!!!  This is another example of big business dictating how the govenment conducts itself.  If you wish to speak out about this idiocy, click on this link: FDA.  The food we put in our bodies should demand as much safety as the tires we put on our cars!

French hold on to a shread of common sense-Sarkozy and the Election
Stories here, here, and here. Welcome to reality, France. It's been a while. In this election, common sense struck France like the fastest train in the world smashing into a brick wall. To have one of the most sluggish economies in Europe, high unemployment, a whole class of people reluctant to work, large numbers of immigrants, and a huge welfare state and not realize that perhaps they each may have something to do with the others seems strange in a country rightfully proud of its intellectual achievements. And Royal promised France another strata of social programs to heap upon those already pressing down upon the French economy? I won't even delve into the other putrid pile of puerile anti-Americanism and naive pro-terrorist state policies that constituted her foreign policy. I'll just ignore the global warming stuff in his speech. I may be a little too cynical, but Sarkozy may have needed an issue with which to appease his left upon his victory and decided on global warm

      People, Use Some Common Sense!
As Karen mentioned in her comments to my previous post, we've had several unfortunate experiences, including two occurrences in the past few weeks, where we've sat next to a couple whose romantic dinner conversation flared into a heated argument. Michael Bauer recently wrote about some similar situations that he's experienced in his blog post about couples who break up over dinner. To be fair to the women out there, it often seems to be the guys who escalate these dinner-time conflicts. At least this appears to have been the case in these most recent two occurrences. Guys, listen up. Here's a tip to help you avoid a spat in public: use some common sense. For example, when your date is visibly upset because you disagree with her political point of view, it doesn't help matters to continue to press her on it. Nor does it help if you stop responding her questions and tell her that you won't answer her because you feel that she is twisting your words. Make sense? Another examp

Common Sense Approach to Gay Marriage
The main argument commonly used against gay marriage is the necessity to protect the “sanctity of marriage” — whatever that means.  For the most part it is an argument based on religious positions.  Since our constitution requires a separation of Church and State, it is only logical that the government should get out of the marriage business completely. The benefits being sought by gay couples are mainly legal and economic in nature.  This amounts to a contractual agreement, freely made, between two people.  There is no valid reason for the government to stand in the way of a consensual contractual agreement. The benefits of a “religious” marriage are based on faith and commitment.  There are already churches that will perform this ceremony for people, gay or straight.  This type of commitment does not need the sanction of government authority to take place, it just needs an agreed upon mindset between two people.

Leopard Delay - Hooray For Common Sense
I’m really looking forwards to getting my hands on Apple’s next release of their OS X operating system, 10.5 Leopard. While the full details of what will be included in this release have not been made public, the current Sneak Peak shows that for the developer there will be some very useful tools that should enable you to deliver more interesting applications, faster and with fewer bugs (there’s a few toys for the end-user as well). This morning, however, MacWorld is reporting that Leopard will be delayed from its announced Spring release to October. Given how useful I expect this release to be, to me this announcement should be depressing news. UPDATE: Apple now makes this official on their own website. Hooray! It’s probably worth noting why I think this. Apple states that the reason why Leopard is being delayed is because Quality Assurance people have had to work on the upcoming iPhone rather than testing Leopard. From the recent beta releases of Leopard

Boy Scouts triumphant, ACLU trounced in common sense ruling
The AP reports that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court ruling and allowed the Pentagon to continue its support of the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Two Chicago-area “religious leaders,” aided and abetted by the ACLU, sued the Pentagon in 1999, whining that the Boy Scouts should not receive public support because Scouts require members to swear an oath of “duty to God.” But the court displayed better sense than the men who filed the suit. “Even assuming that it is correct to characterize the BSA as a ‘religious’ organization, this statute is for the purpose of assisting the military in persuading a new generation to join its ranks and in building good will. This is a secular and valid purpose,” the court wrote. The ACLU shot back; “We continue to believe that government funding to support private activities which exclude persons on the basis of their beliefs is unconstitutional,” American Civil Liberties Union att

Dr Pepper Proves Book Larnin' is No Substitute for Common Sense
As you know, Dr Pepper is my muse. I therefore took it particularly hard when the marketing wizards at the Dr Pepper company turned out to be no more wizards than, well, than Dr Pepper is a real doctor. From the Buffalo News:Less than a month after Boston's highways and bridges were shut down during a bomb scare touched off by an advertising stunt, a new marketing scheme has led angry city officials to shut down a historic site. A clue in a Dr Pepper promotion suggested a coin that might be worth as much as $1 million was buried in the 347-year-old Granary Burying Ground, the final resting place of John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and other historic figures. After contestants showed up at the cemetery gates early Tuesday, the city closed it, concerned that it would be damaged by treasure hunters. Read the rest of the story here.I did some digging (ha!) and found out that, astonishingly, this wasn't even the worst marketing gimmick the Dr Pepper people came up with. I pres

Common Sense, Tax Cuts and Government Spending
Ron Paul publishes a weekly column called Texas Straight Talk.  He addresses many issues, many of which involve the economy.  Below is an excerpt from a recent column and the subject of tax cuts. I apply a very simple test to any proposal to overhaul the tax code: Does it reduce or eliminate an existing tax? If not, then it amounts to nothing more than a political shell game that pits taxpayers against each other in a lobbying scramble to make sure the other guy pays. True tax reform is as simple as cutting or eliminating taxes. No studies, panels, committees, or hearings are needed. When reform proposals seem complicated, they almost certainly don't cut taxes. Congress should simply focus on cutting existing taxes and reducing spending, instead of complicated overhauls of the system. He stresses the need to back up tax cuts with real spending cuts.  Otherwise, the government is just playing games with your money.  Spending has to show up somewhere.  If not

      Common Sense On September 11th
The best article today comes from Cathy Young, Boston Globe and Reason Magazine columnist. Here's an excerpt:Perhaps this polarization is itself a legacy of Sept. 11. Perhaps, after the horror and destruction of that day, we are still looking for black-and-white moral clarity, only different people see black and white on different sides. For some, "evildoers" include not only foreign enemies but liberals and leftists at home; for others, absolute evil resides in the White House itself. Ironically, today's more diverse -- and more fractured -- media contribute to the polarized discourse, allowing people to stay in comfortable ideological niches. Some of the tensions and dichotomies we confront today may be tragic paradoxes with no good answers. Yet in many cases, solutions that transcend the either/or and address both sides of the issue are possible -- as long as one is willing to look at both sides.

Common Sense (and how) Carpooling Safety Tips
After blogging the press release on underground parking garage safety (park near a light), we've become aware that re-packaging the blindingly obvious is putting food on the table of public relations companies. It may not be enough for a regular feature, but your comments on the garage story were amusing enough for us to offer you this tidbit from Graco Children's Products. After telling carpooling school parents to make sure all the kids have the right-sized car seat (presumably all made by Graco), the company advises motorized caregivers to place all children under 12 in the rear seat, choose the right car seat, make sure it's fitted properly and lock the doors. Oh, and keep a contact sheet "readily available" in case, well, you know. I'll start the bidding with this addition: seat siblings as far away from each other as humanly possible.
