Yet precisely the opposite has happened, spawning an immense amount of speculation on the reasons for this disconnect. Some of the explanations focus on the supply side, such as the Peak Oil theory, which says that crude oil production has reached its limits. Russia’s failure to expand production for the third month running is the latest piece of news providing ammunition for this view. Other supply-side explanations blame the food shortage on the diversion of land to biofuels and on weather-related problems such as droughts.Another approach has been to point to the weakening dollar. Information - The World's Greatest Commodity
By: Kathryn WozniakHow do we know that? There are so many reasons why information is the greatest commodity in the world. Information helps people. It spreads the knowledge of topics and subjects. It is the basis for every study, occupation, and hobby. The most important reason why information is the greatest commodity in the world, a reason that effectively sums up all others, is simple-everyone needs information.Who provides information? Experts, or just people who seem to know a great deal about a certain subject, provide information about a subject to those of us who have limited experience with it. Face it-there is no single person in this world who knows everything, though some may think so! Eventually, everyone has to ask questions and seek answers to matters they do not understand. And since it seems everyone knows something, providing information throughout the world is easy.Where did we use to get our information? Much of our information was from books at the library, schools

Marketing Gone Awry, or Wine as Crass Commodity
Vrac [vrak] nm en – in bulk, loose, wholesale, pell-mell. – from Putnam’s Contemporary French DictionaryTravel through any corner of French wine country and you’re sure to see signs along the byways hawking wine en vrac – literally, “in bulk.” Locals drive up to the local cave cooperative or to their favorite private Domaine, haul their five liter plastic jugs out of the trunk and fill them up from a gas station style pump which taps directly into a concrete tank, steel cuve or old wooden cask. For a Euro or two per liter, sometimes less, they’re set for the week with a cistern full of their tipple of choice. There’s a clear distinction at these wineries, regardless of size and intrinsic merit, between wine en vrac and wine in bottle. Bottled wines, even at the lowest levels, are representative of a producer’s “fine wine.” Wine en vrac, on the other hand, is bulk wine made up of leftovers, afterthoughts, the lowest quality fruit from the youngest, highest y

Hedge Volatile Energy Stocks in Your Portfolio Against Commodity Movements
For any investor who holds oil and natural gas stocks in their portfolio, the movement of those stocks is typically tied to the underlying commodity, not to the broader markets. Investing in energy stocks does not come without sharp volatility that may keep small investors on their toes and awake at night, but with the introduction of new Exchange Traded Fund products, investors now have a way to keep the overall movement to a minimum. The idea behind the strategy is that an investor has a long exposure to oil and natural gas companies and hedges that exposure with a short position in an oil or natural gas commodity ETF. For example: An investor has a $50,000 long exposure to oil companies and $25,000 long exposure to natural gas companies. To hedge his investment, the investor would sell short $50,000 of an oil commodity ETF, such as the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Tot Ret Idx ETN (OIL), U.S. Oil Fund ETF (USO), Claymore MACROshares Oil Up Tradeable Tr (UCR) or PowerShares DB Oil

RENEWABLES: The ethanol dreams of George W. Bush, make corn a hot commodity
When Americans fire up their grills for late summer barbecues over the next few weeks, a cloud will be hanging over them in the form of higher prices for steak, chicken and ribs. The reason can be found in the rapid rise in the cost of corn, which is used not only as food for animals that provide meat, but also as an important basic ingredient used in the production of ethanol in the US. President George W. Bush unleashed the new popularity of ethanol when he set a goal to lower US dependence on foreign oil. The price of corn has shot up to nearly double 2005 levels in response to the increased demand. It's no wonder that ethanol refineries are springing up like mushrooms, particularly in mid-western US corn belt states. As of May there were 120 corn refineries countrywide and 75 more were under construction. The White House's fuel dreams are ambitious. In his State of the Union address in January, Bush set a goal of reducing petrol consumption in the car-loving country by 20 pe

      Seeking Value in Commodity Speculation
With the decline of the value of the dollar by over 10 percent over the last year, the need for items of long-term value is increasing. Many investors have gravitated to gold and other precious metals, but base metals, energy supplies and other commodities are also favored. There has been a long-term increase in oil, coal and natural gas prices. Even uranium prices have increased dramatically. Copper, iron, steel, and other commodities have had a huge run-up in price over the last few years. The rising prices of commodities over the last few years reflect the massive inflation in financial values. Investors trying to own commodities, from oil to gold, are trying to hold on to something that is real. This is in contrast to the huge amount of speculation going on in the financial markets, the international hedge funds operations, etc. Oil prices have gone up slightly recently, but have stayed below their peak several months ago. A mild winter weather forecast in the United States means t

Houses Should Not Be a Commodity
A great many people like it when houses go up in price. During a rally the bulls become intoxicated with greed and obsessed with owning real estate as an investment. However, once houses become an investment, the prices of houses begin to behave like an investment, and volatility is introduced into the system. You do not want houses to trade with the volatility of a commodities market. It causes more harm than good. Price volatility is a very disruptive feature in a housing market: the upswings are euphoric, and the downswings are devastating — and there are downswings. Declining house prices are emotionally and financially draining both to individuals and to the economy as a whole. The upswings create massive amounts of unsustainable borrowing and spending, and the downswings create economic contraction, foreclosures and personal bankruptcy. Is the ecstasy of the rally worth the despair of a crash? I think not, but we shall see. There are technical reasons for a market crash (f

Alcan says Goodbye to Alcoa’s Monster Bid and the Commodity Rally Continues
Last week, Alcan (AL) rejected the $28.4 billion bid from Alcoa (AA). The deal would’ve potentially created the largest aluminum company in the world. Shares of Alcan rallied on after the dismissal of AA’s bid, and the opportunity caused more companies to step up to the plate and make their own bids. Two of the most noticeable companies offering to buy the company are Rio Tinto (RTP) and BHP Billiton (BHP). Rio Tinto is in talks with Deutsche Bank to advise on a reasonable bid for Alcan. In a similar release, Canadian press reported that BHP Billiton is in direct talks with Alcan for alternatives to Alcoa’s bid. What’s most interesting about Rio Tinto is the fact that the company has been under buyout speculation for quite some time from BHP Billiton. Rumors of BHP buying Rio Tinto for $100 billion never came true, even though shares in RTP have continued onto record highs. All this buyout and M&A activity leads to only one conclusion. Commodity Investing For Your Portfolio
Even though throughout the last thirty or so years, the Commodity Research Bureau (CRB) has been in a downtrend and the S&P 500 as been in an uptrend many people continue to invest in commodities. Before we look at why and how they are becoming successful investors, let us look at what the CRB is. The Commodity Research Bureau is something similar to the Dow Jones. It mathematically combines the prices of commodities to determine just how the commodities are moving. The equation is performed by averaging out the prices of wheat, gold, coffee, oil, and other such items. One of the reasons that investors are doing so well, is that when you look at the indices you are not getting the whole picture. When you are looking at the general trends, you are not seeing the daily price movements in detail. This is what many investors use when they are looking to trade for profits. What matters at the end of the day, is how much you paid and how much you got when selling, not the prices that you see.
