The news on CNN this morning about a mom who bought her son a rifle on a gun show infuriates me to no end! Turn out, this lad was planning a Columbine type school shooting - good thing it was discovered earlier and was avoided. A mom buying her son a gun - what the heck?Yesterday, all day, I was thinking about the recent school shooting that happened on Ohio. I was thinking about the lad... I was wondering what has gone wrong. I was wonderful if there was something that could have done to help him turn around his ways. Could someone just have shown some compassion to him, maybe he wouldn't have snapped? Also, I was also wondering where he got the gun he used...And then this morning I saw that news - something is definitely wrong in that picture! We've been experiencing a bit of rain in Chicago these past few days and one benefit from it is the seedlings that have emerged or have been given a boost by extra water. I was taking advantage of the fact that the soil is saturated with water and pulling weeds is relatively easy when I spotted a couple of seedlings. One of the seedlings I spotted amongst the weeds is this columbine seedling.I'm guessing that is it either an early sprout from the dark columbine that I already have growing in my garden or some birds brought seeds from a plant somewhere nearby. I got Columbine seeds from a seed trade last year and sowed them in the garden and had great germination success with them. Even though they germinated with ease all I got last year was foliage but this year they have really exploded and have put on quite a show in the garden. It seems like everyday I go out there to check on them there is a new stalk appearing with blooms that go great with the last of the 'Queen of Night' Tulips and the Allium 'Purple Sensation' that is blooming just behind in this photo.Like in many places across the country the honey bee count seems to be lower than normal and in my garden it's not any different but the odd bee I have spotted has been visiting the Columbine blooms.Garden Blogger in Chicago

Remember the outcry after Columbine? Clinton attempted to get tougher gun control legislation through Congress but was blocked by a Republican congress. Republicans preferred to blame Marilyn Manson. Here we are in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech massacre, and I expect less outrage than that which followed Columbine. On the front of gun control, I expect that little will change. I can't help wondering how many dead will be required to prompt meaningful change.Like most rational persons, I recognize that there is no single cause for events such as Columbine and Virgina Tech. The available data indicate that multiple factors are involved, only one of which is access to weapons. Access to weapons is, however, an important variable in assessing the degree of lethality. A gun is not going to make an otherwise stable person go on a killing spree. Mas que la noticia, lo que siempre me llama la atención es como actúa la autoridad y en este caso, veo que no embonan unos detalles.
