I've been using what I think is Saunders Waterford Hot Press for coloured pencil drawings in my Drawing a Head class at the Princes Drawing School this term. It's a completely different experience from drawing on any other sort of paper and I thought I'd provide some feedback about what it's like.

Trams in Hong Kong are famous for being painted with ads all over. Actually this is not so bad as it gives the city even more colours and (perhaps) helps in keeping the fare so low (HKD 2 for a ride). Once inside though, it’s still the same wood and steel decoration. The ad [...]

An old tree stump, A4 size sketch in coloured pencil. Why Coloured? You will notice that one of the recent trends in flooring is the introduction and increasing popularity of coloured laminate flooring. As laminate flooring is known for its resistance to stains and scratch, as well as its durability, manufacturers are coming up with several product varieties to encourage even the most discriminating home owner to consider using laminate flooring. Besides, laminate flooring with vibrant colors adds charm and cheer to the interior of your home. With a lot of hues available, you can choose the exact shade that is the most suitable to your home. Apart from the versatility it afforded, coloured laminate flooring is also considered the most suitable for contemporary design, which is one of the more popular architecture and interior decorating style

I decided that I should so a post on medication. I'm often asked about my medication when I give public talks about depression. I get questions on side effects (both short and long term), dozes, types...you name it. Some I cannot answer. I am not a doctor. I can only speak from my experiences and from what I know. This section is based on that.

Midnight, High Tide. 11-12 ins square, acrylic and coloured pencil painting. Vivien BlackburnSo far all the paintings I've done of this subject have been daytime or evening - I wanted to catch a nightime view and also do a painting with the tide high.I underpainted in a mix of ultramarine and raw umber and white. Ultramarine or indigo and burnt umber are what Paynes Gray is made up with - so that's a colour you really don't need to buy. If you mix your own you can tip it slightly bluer or slightly browner and have a little variety, which I think is more interesting than a flat colour.I then added touches of colour on the cliffs, in the clouds and the sea in purple, blues, green, ochre and brown coloured pencils. The underlying acrylics create a unity of colour and help with the nig

Kalakand is a much-loved sweet in Indian homes. It is milk-based treat that graces festivals, marriages, and many more celebratory events.Kalakand has a melt-in-the mouth feel. It is grainy in texture often due to the multiple milk based ingredients that make it up. The best Kalakand is that which is gently sweetened and allows the combination of both flavour and texture to explode simultaneously in a single bite. Though almonds, cashews, and indeed even walnuts can be added to Kalakand, I find that this indulgent sweet holds its flavour best when paired with pistachio nuts! Needless to say, this sweet is for everyone who loves milk, adores fudge, and has the desire to give in to toothsome delights every so often. And with Valentine's Day round the corner, what better treat for your sweet

Evening Light across the Beach. Vivien Blackburn. Charcoal and coloured pencilThis is the charcoal drawing on grey paper that I showed you unfinished here: -update-february.html (scan down past the painting to it)I said that I was mulling over whether to simply use white pastel for highlights and keep it monochrome or add colour - and if colour what medium???I decided to try coloured pencils over the charcoal and see how they worked - they worked! I wanted to keep the colours very muted, this kind of evening light softens and dulls colours and the cliff was deeply shadowed and backlit.I worked in multiple glazes of colours to softly build white, blues, mauve, umber, sienna, peach, orange, ochres and a little green on the cliff top which doesn't show much onscreen as it's only a little. I’ve just finished off the colouring on an illustration taken from a new book I am working on, featuring Tass-Heyah, a mermaid princess, and warrior. Despite her parents requests for her to act more ‘princess-like’, she is stronger and braver than most of Neptune’s own warriors…. When the great undersea city is attacked by a large shoal of hungry sharks, ells and nasty little fish, she takes it upon herself to do her part. When Neptune’s warriors fall at the city gates, all looks doomed, until Tass-Heyah leads the invading army away from the city, saving her people. As she darts between the corals and vines on the seabed, with the hungry horde behind her, she stumbles and falls into a deep ravine……..
When I login to my GMail this morning, I noticed a new featured on the top right of my IE7 browser. Google has released a new feature in GMail - coloured labels for emails. Previously you can label all your emails and you can only label them in green. Now you can choose different colours for different labels. It enhances the visibility by providing different choice of colours for labels. Unfortunately this feature is only available for IE7 and Firefox 2 browsers. I use IE7 browser at work but when I am at home I use Safari on my Apple computer and the feature is not available.
Have you ever wanted to try colored contacts? I have. No kidding. I mean, yeah, when I was in college, I used to secretly poke fun at one of our classmates who wore purple contact lenses (she's Asian, by the way), and claimed that they were her real eye colour! But now, after looking at many pictures of lovely Asian women who wear coloured contact lenses, I'm itching to give it a go.Today it is easy because you can just order them directly over the internet. Colored contacts have really increased in popularity the last couple of years, you can see a lot of celebrities use them and they are a great resource for changing your apparel drastically for a time. Before buying the lenses it’s important to know however that the effect of the different lenses varies heavily depending on your own natural color. For instance a person with dark eyes has to use an opaque contact lens if they want to change the color to blue. While a person with natural blue eyes use a tinted lens which enhances th

Ever heard of colored diamonds? Many people haven’t heard of these rare gems; or if they have heard of them it’s only when talking about big name celebrities. Stars like Jennifer Lopez and Oprah are known for their taste in beautiful, expensive, colored diamonds.
Pastor Geneve Colored diamonds are rarer than white diamonds. They can also be much more expensive depending on the diamond itself. But there are some of these diamonds out there that are affordable for everyday people.
Among these rare gems are both pink and blue diamonds. Pink diamonds and blue diamonds are the two most rare and most expensive diamonds in the world; they’re exquisite. Once you set your eyes on them, you’ll be hooked.
If you’re shopping for these rare diamonds and you want the real thing be sure not to be fooled by an imitation. Some stores advertise color treated diamonds as if they were genuine. A color treated diamond is one that has been manipulated in order to change the color.

Japan remains hot for colours; journey is long but potential is great in China, said Gavin Pearce, senior sales executive at Argyle Diamonds, who also forecasts that demand from new markets and the diminishing supply of coloured diamonds will drive prices up.

This week one of my gifted students, Jenny, brought in a superb book by Shirley Trevena (you can see some of the work in it on her website) - an artist I really admire. One of the techniques she uses is rubbing watercolour pencils with sandpaper, over damp watercolour washes, giving a speckled effect - and it looks wonderful. http://www.shirleytrevena.com/ take a look at her gorgeous work :)Jenny lent me her pencils to have a go - so this is a very quick demo for the class - a play on cartridge paper with watercolour, watercolour pencils and sandpaper :) and ordinary coloured pencils (my own). We went on to discuss drawing with the 'wrong' end of the brush through damp paint to get those veins in the leaves and putting soft patches of normal coloured pencils in areas to enhance and push colours. They've all been used in this demo piece.I'm sold! I have to get some water soluble coloured pencils :) I think graphitints would be good for this as they are supposed to dry waterproof - w
There's a craze about Donuts now in Singapore. Donut Shops are opening one after another and the queue for them are ridiculously long. I too am going to try too! *wink* However, anything with Yeast in it will means you have to wait of at least an hour or two unless you have a bread machine, which I don't. Soooo, I have decided to experiment making donuts without yeast instead. And voila! See my ball donuts without using yeast! But I have to confess. It tasted more like cake but it smells so nice and it taste great too! My hubby and son said it even better than the yeast Donut! Waahh ... so comforting! LOL Hmm ... I haven't given up, yet! I'll be experimenting more! So watch my blog!Ingredients:// I'm not using a scale to get the measurement because it won't
This is a page of watercolour studies of pansies, not intended to be 'a painting', I did a while ago that I came across. It's a grey rainy day and the light isn't good to get on with the canvasses so I decided to try to pull it together as a composition. I used a bit more watercolour and coloured pencils and cropped it and added the soft blue green background to cool it down a little - the colours felt too hot. The deep dark pansies were really velvety and intense and maybe not the colour scheme I would have set out to use with the orange and pale yellows - but the background helps to knit them together. Bringing the soft mauves into the darker flowers also helped.I also took another look at a mixed media woodland that was unfinished and worked a little more on that.It has a little oil pastel in the early stages, watercolour and then coloured pencils.

Two things that coloured pencil artists concern themselves with - when not drawing - is acquisition ('Do I have enough pencils?') and disposition ('What do I do with all those short stubby ones?')AcquisitionThe answer to the first question is an unequivocal "No". You can never have 'enough' pencils - unless you truly believe that you can produce everything you have ever wanted to draw with one red, one blue and one yellow pencil! Even when you settle on your brand of preference you can still get the heebies jeebies when you think you might not have enough stock of unused pencils in your favourite colours. Do I have tins containing stocks of unused pencils? Of course I have - with an elastic band round them to stop them from rolling around and getting damaged if the tin is handled! (Actually I have more than one tin....) I won't even refer to what happens when a favourite brand or colour is discontinued - it's too painful! In my experience, the dedicated coloured pencil ar

In front there was bright light reflecting and a jumble of ever changing (as the light changed) reflections. English weather isn't the easiest for sketching in! sometimes the light on the water reflected the bricks of the buildings clearly and at other it went dark with only hints of a reflection as clouds went over the sun.At one point the friend I was sketching with stood helpfully in front of the scene :>) I was drawing
From pastel to fluo... colored jeans are hot. In a way it's amazing this hasn't been taken on as a trend before (Sass and Bide did it a few years ago, but it didn't really stick). I've previously posted a "Packing Tape Transfer" topic under my tips and tricks section. This is an extension to it. This time, it's about transferring own created coloured multi-sized photographs onto packing tapes. The steps are as follows: 1. Use softwares (i.e. Microsoft Words) to copy and paste your photographs. Create an index print look with different sizes of photographs. Make sure you leave some space in between the lines. (this is to ease the sticking process later) Use toner based ink or water proof ink to print this index print onto normal printing paper. The toner ink print will give a more sharper look and the water proof ink will give a more distressed look. 2. Cover the strips of photographs using packing tapes and rub on top of it using your fingers or bone folder.3. Cut out the photographs into it's individual sizes. 4. Choose which ever piece of photographs you want to use, soak them into water for few sections. 5. Later, rub off the backing paper using your f
I need to do some more of the long thin seascapes in the Time and Tide series for a couple of galleries so I decided to have a play in coloured pencil from sketches and paintings done at the coast and the last one simply playing with colour and shapes and taking a different viewpoint - looking back at the land instead of out to sea or along the beach. The majority of my seascapes look out at the sea as that's the view we commonly get - but looking back at the land from the water gives an interestingly different perspective. I must do more of these. These are only small, about 7.5 ins tall, coloured pencil in the moleskine.I wasn't planning on them being anything other than sketches but it occurs to me that a row of them in coloured pencil might be worth framing. I have to write a press release now and update a group website but I keep getting distracted by the amorous squirrels in the garden - it looks like we could have babies before long by this behaviour! and noisy sparrows dispu

I should be doing lots of things instead but I wanted to draw - so I did :) ... and now I have to face the dirty dishes, pile of washing and tidying up :( I did this from a combination of the sketches I did on the beach at sunset and memory. I've done a series of works from those sketches - in oil, pastel and digital images. It was interesting to see just how intense and dark it's possible to go with coloured pencils. I think they hold up well in comparison with other media. I'm speeding up with them and can now imagine sketching more with them plein air. I think they'll feature more often in my sketchbooks in the future. It was done with a mix of Polychromos, Lyra and cheapo Tescos coloured pencils and one Derwent. I like the heavier waxier Polychromos and Lyra - in future I'll know which to go for. Luckily I took the advice of expert CP users and bought quite a few polychromos - the Derwent is an old one, though it's good I don't like it as much. The moleskine
I knew that people had said that moleskines didn't take watercolour - but I had to find out for myself :>)I started off with a rough pencil sketch of a marsh harbour at Brancaster Staithe from the small moor on the hill above. It's a tiny area but real moorland with gorse and bracken and rocks. The watercolour just rolled off its waxy surface and had to be scrubbed in quite drily to get it to stay on the paper at all! Definitely not one to try again - maybe gouache? or acrylic? Then I used coloured pencils to reinforce colours, letting some of the watercolour that 'stuck' show through.A mix of Polychromos, Lyra, Derwent and some cheap unnamed supermarket coloured pencils were used, reinforced with graphite pencil. This is a view I'd like to do in oils some time, working plein air. It was done from a photograph taken when I sketched there last year. There's a wonderful view from the moor, known as The Common, of the harbour with its islands and twisting creeks, reed beds and salt mar
This is the second of two posts providing an overview of abrasive supports for use with pastels. Yesterday's post discussed a range of supports - Ampersand Pastelbord, Art Spectrum Colourfix and Ersta Sanded Paper.Today's post covers four different surface:Jack Richeson Premium Pastel Surface (new product)Sennelier La Carte Pastel (Pastel Card) / Rembrandt Pastel Board.Schminke Sansfix PastellkartonWallis PaperFuture posts will cover making your own abrasive supports using pumice or marble dust and this will be covered in a future blog post and the velour type papers.Quotes (in the boxes) which follow are all from the Dakota Pastels website unless otherwise indicated. I was generally impressed with the presentation of information on this website - which specialises in pastels and associated art materials.Jack Richeson Premier Pastel SurfaceJack Richeson is introducing a new pastel surface produced on three different substrates:140lb. paper, 1/8” hardboard and 3/16” Gator Boar
Christmas in Cheshire available via the Art for UK Youth North 2007 exhibition in April)5" x 15", coloured pencils on Art Spectrum Colourfixcopyright Katherine TyrrellI really like making a mark on an abrasive support when developing artwork involving either pastels or coloured pencils. So how come I've not done an overview about abrasive supports before? This post begins to remedy that problem and completes with a second post tomorrow. Why use abrasive supports for pastels and coloured pencils? I use an abrasive support for pastels because I find it invariably gives me much greater control over my soft pastel sticks. Adhesion is also very much better than when pastel is used on paper. Abrasive supports vary as to how much pigment can be laid down before the tooth is 'full' - some have such a good grip they positively eat soft pastel sticks. The way I use my coloured pencils on abrasive supports is very similar to the way I use pastels. The only real difference seems to be
Another painting-in-waiting! I have added a couple of work in progress pictures on my website (click on the picture) as I forgot to post them on here. My thanks to Robert who took the terrific photos of the pups on a neighbouring island that I worked from for this study. This drawing is available as a signed archival print and greeting card. I have a great deal of catching up to do on the website with new work and there are several new prints out...just need some extra hours in the day! Hopefully I will get time to update it all soon. Please get in touch if you have any questions meantime.
Another little sketch in prep for the large farmyard painting, this is a study of our now departed Barnevelde (which may be spelt wrong!) cockerel in coloured pencil.Should really have just been in pencil but I am rather enjoying adding a bit of colour when I have time (and I am supposed to be on holiday now!). Hopefully I will have the basic composition for the actual painting finalised and agreed soon, then all the sketches will come together and make sense (in theory at least).Merry Christmas to everyone and a very Happy New Year!
This little study of a duck is in prep for the same large commission as the previous goat. It started off as a drawing but the colours were too tempting, so I got out the coloured pencils and had some fun finishing it off on my knee infront of the fire last night. I am planning to include quite a variety of poultry and farm/countryside creatures in the painting and am almost decided what is going where now. The actual painting will be in watercolours of course, but I have some other work to complete before I can begin on it in earnest. I have no idea what kind of duck this is - probably a bit of a mixture (?) judging by the others wandering around with him.
I started this a week ago - just after I did the pastel version - see Parrots In Pastel. The first two stages were done from life. Unfortunately I had to break off due to various commitments last week - but managed to get it finished last night as most of the work that was left was the work required to strengthen the colours and values. This is the final version is now included in the Flowers Gallery on my website "Pastels and Pencils" - this is the link http://www.pastelsandpencils.com/flowers.htmlart , coloured pencils , colored pencils , flower paintings , painting
It just gets better. The ideas to make my boy's meal I mean. No, spoon, fork or chopsticks is required for today's meal. And it's really colourful. Pink, brown, green (yah, it looks like black) and yellow. Oh, and orange! He had Mandarin orange as an after meal fruit.I'll definitely make this again (cos he finished the whole lot!) and I'll take picture of it with a proper camera (took this with my mobile phone camera).Ingredients:Cooked riceDenbu aka fish floss (it's the pink one)Furikake aka rice toppings (it's the brown one)Nori aka roasted seaweed (it's the dark green one that looks like black)1 Egg, scrambled1 Hotdog, steamed for 3 minutes2 Crabstick, steamed for 3 minutes1/2 teaspoon butterHow to do it:Roll rice into a ball and coat with Denbu, Furikake & Nori.Use a skewer to hold them.Heat frying pan with butter.Pour egg into pan. Swirl the pan to spread the egg throughout. When the egg is about 90% cooked, place crabstick and hotdog on the edge and roll.Cook for anoth
The first one I've shown before,it was done with a carbon pencilthe second is a quick sketch of paintbrushes done with coloured pencils from a Portrait set by Lyra. I really like Lyra pencils to use. These belonged to the college but I think I may invest in a set - they'd be interesting sketching in the landscape - just working tonally but with lovely warms and cools to play with.
