Basketball is a favorite pastime of kids and adults alike. American kids grow up with dreams of earning scholarships and reaching fame in the college league. Basketball owes its origin to Dr. James Naismith, who invented the sport in 1892. Before long, the popularity of the game caught on and it was being played in American colleges. The first official game involving a college team was played between Geneva College and the New Brighton YMCA in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1893. On February 9, 1895, the first intercollegiate game was played between the Minnesota State School of Agriculture and Hamline College. Minnesota won that game, 9 to 3. The introduction of the five-player format was the next major college basketball milestone. This happened during an intercollegiate game in
With Pat Summit’s Tennessee Vols and the Tigers of LSU in the Final Four of the Women’s NCAA championship along with fantastic seasons by guys at Tennessee and Vanderbilt–the SEC Conference is categorically the best conference in basketball. (And if you forgot, the Florida guys won it all versus Ohio State last year).

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 15-over-2 club nearly added a new member Thursday night at the Verizon Center.

As the college basketball season has gotten underway, I thought this would be a good time to look at the odds for each of the six BCS conferences. I have included the odds from three sites; Bodog, BetUS, and The Greek. As I write this, the Bodog odds have actually been taken down (possibly just temporarily), but they're a good point of reference regardless. The next column is the % chance Vegas thinks each team has of winning their conference, derived from the odds. And the final column is the team's line for winning it all (from SportsBetting); I thought that would be useful to compare with the conference %.Please note that these are to win the regular season conference title. If there's a tie, the team that gets the top seed in the conference tournament is the winner.ACCWow, Duke is overrated. 20:1 to win it all...with what post presence? Beyond that, all of these seem about right to me- I guess NC State at 8:1 is probably pretty solid. NC St @ Mich. St. on November 28 shoul

Countless dollars are spent within the industry, and the money isn't only going into the pockets of overpaid pro athletes. The demand for college basketball apparel, memorabilia and footwear continues to grow. He's had this program on the rise for the last few years and this is their year to take it from the Gators. Vols return four starters and eight letter winners to a team poised to make a move. Pearl has experience and depth and the East is theirs to lose. 2. Vanderbilt CommadoresVanderbilt finished a distant second with a decent record in the east and is looking to get a steady improvement this year. The commodores return three starters and seven letter winners from last year’s squad. Shan Foster will be back as the team leader in points but the Commodores will need the new youngsters to take a serious role if they expect to have a shot at being the team to beat in the East. 3. Florida GatorsWill they reload or rebuild? They lost 10 letter winners from last year losing five starters. Billy

KansasKU is loaded with veteran players and are looking to get over the hump and reach the Final Four for the first time since 2003. Gone is versatile forward Julian Wright, who will be missed greatly, but the experience and ever-talented Jayhawks are still one of the top teams in the country. KU returns 4 starters in Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers, Russell Robinson, and Sasha Kaun. Sixth man Darrell Arthur will start for Wright and will be one of the top sophomores in the nation. Also, a rather deep bench should keep them atop the Big XII.2. Kansas St.KSU did lose 3 starters, but their in-coming recruiting class is their best ever. Clent Stewart and David Hoskins are the two returning starters, but Michael Beasley and Bill Walker will help fill in for the other losses. Beasley is a great talent and will most likely be one and done. Domi

White, one of the best posts in the nation is back along with PG Armon Bassett, SF Lance Stemler, G A.J. Ratliff, and F Mike White; not to mention the new addition of freshman Eric Gordon, who is already looking to be one of the best guards in the country. Gordon will provide the Hoosiers with even more stellar guard play and depth.2. Michigan St.Last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Spartans, but they surprised many of us losing in the 2nd round to UNC and finished with a 23-12 record. The top 6 scorers are back, plus they added a stellar recruiting class with a top recruit in Chris Allen. Drew Neitzel is back for one last time and is looking to lead this team deep into the NCAA Tournament...3. Ohio St.OSU lost big time players in Greg Oden, Mike
By: William SmithIt is the mission of most camps to provide the best programs and staff to fully meet the various basketball and fitness needs of their participants. Most camps provide maximum exposure to college and prep school scouts. Most organizations provide young basketball players with the highest level of coaching, elite competition, and allow each athlete to develop a sense of pride and accomplishment. The idea is determined to create an unmatched basketball atmosphere. The passion for basketball has led to the development of a small industry around the game. Stores market basketball merchandise like shoes, jerseys, logos and other knickknacks while colleges run basketball camps for beginners. They rope in former basketball players and coaches to run the college basketball camp. These camps are not limited to college students. Anyone can apply and get admission to the basketball camps. Several colleges organize residential basketball camps while others encourage students to com

Since I need an excuse to write about college basketball in August, I'm going to start looking through some headlines each week and seeing what effect they'll have on the upcoming season.Alabama's Steele to have second knee surgery (ESPN)This seems like a really long time ago (I guess it kind of is), but on December 4th last year, Alabama was in the top 5 in both polls. This is notable because they finished the year 8th in the SEC, and lost in the first round of the SEC tournament. They didn't even make the NCAAs, and lost to UMass in the first round of the NIT.A big reason for this was Steele. He was bothered by both tendinitis in his knee and a high ankle sprain all year, averaging only 8.6 ppg, missing full games, and playing 12 minutes or less in three others. This was quite a disappointment, as he had averaged 14.3 ppg and made the All-SEC team in his sophomore year, and was actually a preseason All-American prior to the 06-07 season. It looks like it's going to be a tough yea
Walter McCarty, a former Kentucky star who played 10 seasons in the N.B.A., has rejoined his mentor, Rick Pitino, as an assistant basketball coach at Louisville. To be back here with him, it means a lot, McCarty said yesterday. He played for Pitino in 1996, when Kentucky won the N.C.A.A. title.McCarty replaced Marvin Menzies, who was introduced yesterday as the head coach at New Mexico State. Menzies replaced Reggie Theus, another former assistant to Pitino at Louisville, who left to coach more…
Now that we know who's in and who's out of the NBA Draft, here's an early pre-season College Hoops Top 10 poll for the 2007-2008 season.1. UNC Tar Heels- The top team for next season definitely has to be the Tar Heels. Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, and Wayne Ellington all return. They have everybody returning but Reyshawn Terry and Brandan Wright. Wright will be missed greatly but they still have a lot of fire power. Look for UNC to be in the Final Four and possibly that national championship game. 2. Memphis Tigers- The 2007-2008 squad will return 5 of their top 6, plus the additions of recruits Derrick Rose and Jeff Robinson will help a lot. Especially the addition of Rose, he should be able to come in right away and help fill in for the lone loss in Jeremy Hunt. After back to back Elite 8 finishes the past two seasons, Memphis finally has what it takes to get over the hump and into the Final Four. They were the lone team that wasn't affected by the draft deadline date. 3. Kansas
Denis Clemente transferred to Kansas State after starting 15 games at point guard for Miami last season and drawing a suspension in February for violating team rules. Clemente, a 6-footer from Puerto Rico, averaged 9.8 points for Miami last year as a sophomore.
The bully coach in men's sports is a dinosaur. It now looks as though they may be headed for extinction in women's sports.Looking at her lifetime career there is no doubt that Rene Portland did good work in furthering the advancement of women's athletics. But, at the end of the day, her legacy, unfortunately, will be about meanness and prejudice. In many ways Coach Portland's achievements as Penn State women's basketball coach (606-236 record, Final Four in 2000, and several Coach of the Year awards) are testimony to her skill as a coach. Perhaps, the success is even more remarkable given Ms. Portland's obsession with purging the program of lesbian players, who make a sizeable portion of women's basketball players. But, there was a time when good coaches could field basketball teams consisting of all white players. And so long as no one else tapped into the huge African-American talent pool, they would succeed. Today, it might be possible to put a winning all white team on an NBA
Today, when I logged onto CBS Sportsline, I was greeted with this:You see, despite being raised watching baseball, I had never really paid much attention to basketball until I saw Christian Laettner. I mean, he was one of People's 50 Most Beautiful People. After that, I started paying more attention to sports. Of course, dating a basketball player and going to two big sports schools didn't hurt. And now, it's what, 15 years later, and I still think he's cute -- at least in that picture.
It’s getting to be that time of year when the basketball crazies grip most everyone. Many of us will be engaging in the impossible exercise of guessing which of 64 teams will win over the course of the next three weekends. This is fun, but if you are looking to get rich off the office pool, scratch tickets are a more lucrative investment. But, everyone can appreciate the live streams at the office, which are much more important than work. The women will also be playing. I think I am being objective in making the observation that women’s basketball is beyond ready for prime time. It seems almost as good as the men's college games, and to my taste is more exciting than the NBA.But, the bad news on that front is a scandal that has erupted down at LSU.Head women’s basketball coach, Pokey Chatman, has resigned. The girls will head off to the NCAA tournament under the direction of assistant coach Bob Starkey.Miss Chatman was a respected and popular coach at LSU. A former LSU star play
For those of you who don’t know what the College Basketball RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) is, I will do my best to explain it. The RPI is the formula used to rate men’s and women’s college basketball teams. The basic formula is 1/4 (Winning Percentage) + 1/2 (Opponents’ Average Winning Percentage) + 1/4 (Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage). This taken from the NCAA website will explain it the best.
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) was created in 1981 to provide supplemental data for the Division I Men's Basketball Committee in its evaluation of teams for at-large selection and seeding of the championship bracket.
The RPI is intended to be used as one of many resources used by the committee in the selection, seeding and bracketing process. It never should be considered anything but an additional evaluation tool. No computer program that is based on pure numbers can take into account subjective concepts, e.g., how well a team is playing down
