Collective Soul's new album "Afterwords" was released on August 28th on Itunes and at Target. Unfortunately for me, my digital music store of choice, Rhapsody, does not have the new album. The multitude of scattered electronic beeps that erupt from your speakers during the first thirty seconds of Peacebone' makes you wonder whether something has gone terribly wrong. Thankfully they soon settle into an addictively pulsing beat. These sparkling clusters of synths are then woven together into a rich sound tapestry alongside a myriad of strange noises and looping rhythms. The mixture of high pitched vocals with call and response choruses and bursts of spine-tingling screams create a distorted atmosphere and a sense of a deliberate lack of cohesion.
The other part of Animal Collective's first release since signing to Domino records is the more ethereal Safer'. Clocking in at around nine minutes, it contains several distinct sections yet patterns and rhythms dance and build throughout. One of the most popular rock bands of the 90s, they scored big hits with "Shine", "Heavy", "Run", "The World I Know", "Precious Declaration", and "December". They have recently released their new single, "Hollywood", which is now availiable for download on itunes. With my artist son Brett, I attended a user group meeting for Luxology Software's Modo. It's a software program for 3D modeling and soon, animation. The moderator must have said that they believe in the power of 1000 minds, over the power of 10. In other words, they use their user community as much as possible to help influence the aspects of the product they make. If you have not looked at some of the amazing creations, it is worth a visit. There are some where you cannot tell if it is a photograph or a model.This was intriguing to me since I had just seen a piece on brainstorming. I can't recall where I saw it but the premise was that group brainstorming is not as effective as individual brainstorming in some cases. Matt and Kim: “Yea Yeah (Flosstradamus remix)”
There was really no reason for Flosstradamus to remix this song, because the original packs far more dancable, joyful punch anyway. The video, directed by Demonbabies, isn’t as good as the original either. The children’s show theme is perfect for Matt and Kim, yet the video annoys quickly, mostly due to the puppet host who interrogates the band. Still, Matt and Kim smile the entire time, just as they do at their shows and in their other videos. Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

The BBC is running a warning from the Chief executive of the UK National Archives: "Unless more work is done to ensure legacy file formats can be read and edited in the future, we face a digital dark hole."Think about it, we can still read 5,000 years old Egyptian hieroglyphs or medieval manuscripts but we can't access a file on a floppy disk, read a Betamax tape or a Philips CD-I... There is a danger of loosing our collective memory because we record it on highly perishable media. And the pace of change drives the cost of re-recording it again and again for national archives, who are often poorly funded.I reckon that in 10 years time, it will be fashionable to handwrite letters again, just because it involves efforts and makes the recipient feel special.
