Hubley Collecting, a little history on these collectible toys.
Early 1890's the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Pennsylvania began work on Cast Iron Toys and appliances pertaining to the times. Mostly toy guns pee shooters and even model horse drawn carriages we're largely popular. As the automotive and military markets and designs began to spread so did the style of Hubley vehicles in the 1900's. The rare stuff though is any and all cast iron toys. By WW2 most of the public donated these collectables to the war effort and toys were melted to become weapons and vehicles. A zinc die cast alloy was introduced to the toys at the same time and the name on the toys changed to Kiddie until the company was sold in 1965. The question most people have though is how to tell the difference between the die cast and the cast iron. The easiest way is that those tha

Collecting Greek, Roman, and Other Old Coins
How to Store Old Coins Elderly coins, like elderly people, require tender handling. It is important to remember that one of the vital factors regarding the value of an old-time coin is the patina, or the sheen that builds up on the surface of a coin over time. The last thing you want to do is to polish an ancient silver coin so that it is bright and shining! When dealing with old coins, you should only hold them by the edges, since the oil on your hands can ruin the patina. Do not attempt to clean old coins on your own without learning a lot about the proper techniques. Only a veteran should attempt to clean a potentially valuable aged coin. When storing old coins, always use acid-free materials; any other kind of storage could damage the coin. You’ll need a safe place to keep your ancie

Collecting Greek, Roman, and Other Old Coins
Buying Uncleaned Lots of Old Coins Of course, there is another bargain option when buying ancient coins, and that is to buy a lot of uncleaned coins. These are old coins that have been unearthed in archaeologically rich areas like Italy or Greece, but have not had the dirt and buildup of the centuries cleaned from them. Uncleaned lots of elderly coins are exciting because you never know if the coins will be so worn that there is nothing left but a smooth piece of metal, or whether you will uncover a genuine rare coin. You should be aware, however, that the likelihood of finding a high-value gold or silver coin among uncleaned lots is extremely slim. Furthermore, the reason why uncleaned lots are sold to begin with is that cleaning old coins is a difficult endeavor in the best of circumstan

Collecting Greek, Roman, and Other Old Coins
Things You Should Look For While Buying Old Coins Unless you are looking to spend some serious money on your collection, the old coins that you buy will probably not be extremely valuable as an investment. However, that should not undermine the thrill of being able to own a genuine aged coin on a shoestring budget. There are numerous places, both online and off, that sell inexpensive old coins. The important thing to look for when buying these ancient coins is that the coin is identifiable. It is disappointing to buy an aged coin, only to realize that there is no way of telling what it actually is. The best way to ensure that an ancient coin is identifiable is to be certain that the writing and inscriptions on it are legible.

Collecting Greek, Roman, and Other Old Coins
A Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Inexpensive Old Coins Collecting old coins is like holding a piece of history right in your hand. It is common to find affordable ancient Roman coins that are 1600 years old, and many are even 2000 years old or more. Imagine that the ancient Roman denarius in your collection might once have bought admission to the gladiator fights in the Coliseum or chariot races at the Circus Maximum. The best thing about collecting old coins is that, unlike other antiquities, ancient coins are remarkably affordable. Because so many ancient coins have been discovered, and more are being unearthed every day, it is possible to buy millennia-old coins for only a few dollars apiece. For less than the cost of a movie ticket, you could own a link to olden times. by: Charles R

      5. Glasses that magnifyTo rank the coins, magnifying glasses offer a big helping hand. Though 7x magnification is the most recommended one by numismatists, but even magnification in the range of 4x to 10x will complete the job pretty well. For examining the degree of excellence and the genuineness of coins, a magnifying glass is of great help. Defects which can't be seen by the naked eye like scratches or even hairlines can be brought to notice by magnifying glass. This is a good thing as such defects affect the coin-value in a negative way.6. Light SourceA source of light should be kept at a distance of half a meter from the workstation. A 75-watt lamp that's incandescent or a halogen lamp is suggested for this purpose.7. Tools for handlingThe quality of the coins gets diminished by the ma

Key Coin: A coin that is among the toughest and Most Expensive to obtain within a series. In the Lincoln Cent series, for example, the 1909-S VDB would be considered the key, as would the 1914-D and often the 1922-Plain.A coin somewhat lesser in stature but still among the tougher in a series to collect is called a semi-key; the 1909-S and 1931-S fulfill this role within the Lincoln Cent series for many collectors. The Concept of “Key” may also apply to the Type or Purpose of the coin collection, rather than the individual coin. For example, if a collector is putting together a collection of Walking Liberty Half Dollars, without regard to the Condition of the coins, then the “keys” are the 1921, 1921-D, and 1916-S.by: Robert L Taylor, JD

In 1900, Roseville Rozane became the first high quality art pottery line produced by Roseville. Unsure of the exact pattern but this style can bring in some good money. We think it might be pinecone. Combine it with underground storage, and a year-round system can be created where the system can cover heating requirements in the winter and cooling in the summer. The Dutch company Ooms Avenhorn Holding BV has taken this concept and moved it a step forward with the Road Energy System® (RES). Rather than putting tubes on a rooftop, RES lays the collection system within concrete -- think the black asphalt of a road or runway. The piping connects to undeground storage areas. Secrets to Collecting Antique Maps
Dumpdiggers collect old maps, rich in history. We believe that antique maps are a good investment as, generally speaking, they are still undiscovered among collectibles, which means they are also undervalued. The wisdom in this post is distilled from an old book called Antique Maps - A Collector's Handbook by Carl Moreland and David Bannister, and from a a terrific new blog called Map The Universe.

A Short History of Photograph Collecting
By Penelope DixonThe collecting of photographs was practically simultaneous with the invention of photography. P & D Colnaghi, a well-established art gallery in London, sold photographs as early as the 1850s, representing both the work of Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron. People became obsessed with capturing their own likenesses. A popular past-time in the mid-19th Century was the exchange of carte-de-visites. People collected cartes of their friends and family and put them into albums, much like children exchanging school pictures today. Much like our present fascination with Hollywood personalities, they were also avid collectors of celebrity images. What's pink, patriotic, and as into posies as it is punt-guns? No, it's not Paris Hilton's latest image makeover. Or Mattel's new "Bivouac Barbie"....It's a Sweetheart Pillow from World War II.These satiny, sentimental souvenirs from our US military ports stand today as quirky and meaningful reminders of our nation's past and the lives of the people who served. "To Mother," "To My Wife," "To Sister" or sometimes just featuring area tourist attractions, the pillows were sent back as sweet and consoling tokens of caring during tough times. Many feature images of heavy military machinery, flags and eagles paired-- rather unexpectedly to modern eyes!-- with delicate roses and gentle poetic verse directed at the recipient. The pillow covers often support a particular branch of the military. Collecting Proofs
The Collectability of Proofs and other Types of Advance Editionsby Steven WilliamsWhen book collecting is discussed, one of the most frequent type of collecting that comes up is the collecting of 'First Editions'. The meaning of first edition is slightly different for book publishers than it is for collectors. Publishers consider a first edition as all copies of a book printed from substantially the same setting of printing type, including all the minor typographical variations that might exist. These variations can arise from something as minor as a revised dust jacket with additional advertising 'blurbs', photos, or price to variations that come up as typesetting errors or broken type are discovered and corrected within the first printing. For collectors though, First Edition has a meani

Collecting Zippo Lighters is a Growing Hobby

Who knew that they could also be collector's items? Zippo collecting has become a recent trend in the collecting world, and while they are not especially valuable monetarily at this point, they may become so in the near future.Zippo lighters are easy items to collect because they have a history, new models are easy to find, older ones have date codes imprinted on them, and they come in a variety of styles and colors. They are also small, handheld mechanical objects that are fun to use, trade, and give away. Over the years, Zippo lighters have come out with different images on them, which represent a period in time and ofte

      Collecting Arcade Games
By: Jason Petrina If you're interested in collecting arcade games and you are not already familiar with some of the unique features of these games, then it's a good idea to take some time to familiarize yourself with all the information related to this highly collectible item. You may run across some terminology that you may not be familiar with during the process of beginning your collection, so let's take a look at some of those terms and define them in easy to understand terms. One of the most common terms you might come across is the attract mode. This term refers to the screen that will appear when the game is not being played. The purpose of this screen, of course, is to attract players to come and play the game. The same screen, or screens, may also provide directions for play or demonstrate a sample game. An important aspect of the attract screen is that it should change periodically so that screen burn does not occur. Screen burn occurs when there is a slight discoloration

Collecting and Investing in Undervalued Japanese Artists
Collecting and Investing in Undervalued Japanese Artists Many of you may not remember the art market correction of the early nineties but the Japanese sure do. The art market boom of the late 80’s was partly driven by wealthy Japanese who had a voracious appetite for Impressionist works because of the prestige associated with owning a famous painting and the usefulness of artworks as a form of tradable currency at a time when property prices were sky high. When the Japanese economy began to head south in 1990 the wealthy Japanese buyers stopped buying art which left a big gap in the market and caused people to begin to question the world art market boom. As the financial crisis began to worsen all around the world the value of the artworks that the Japanese had paid exorbitant amounts of money for rapidly declined leaving a whole lot of remorseful Japanese stuck with artworks worth a lot less than they had paid for them. The Japanese art market continues to suffer from the repercussi

(NC)-First of all, look around for coins - any coins - and put them in a safe place. A good spot to find the first coins for your collection is right in your pocket. You might find some of the 25-cent coins that the Royal Canadian Mint made for the Millennium. Or the special 50-cent coin commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Maybe your parents or grandparents have some loose change they could spare to help you start. Here's another idea: Take your allowance to the bank and buy a roll of coins, then keep the ones you need for your collection. Or check out the newest and coolest coins at the Mint's website (www.mint.ca/en/RoyallyCool/FunFacts) and start your collection with some 'Royally Cool Money.' Is Apple collecting your iPhone usage data?
It looks like Apple is tracking iPhone users data including IMEI number, IP address and stock quote preferences (amongst other things) through a hidden string in the Weather.app and Stocks.app iPhone applications. This information is sent to “http://iphone-wu.apple.com/dgw?imei=%@&apptype=finance” (IP resolved “17.254.32.16″). See screenshot below for details. From this information, Apple could build a profile on users. Where they travel, where they spend their free time, where they work, where they invest their money, what they browse, etc etc. Obviously most users would like to be able to control who has access to this information. If they connect this data with the credit card that you used to purchase the iPhone (remember, you can’t use cash anymore), they could build an even bigger profile on you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like you can doanything about it - though hackers are working on it now. According to Uneasysilence.com, if y

I would venture to say; however, that few types of artwork are more permanent than art in stone. This is because stone is extremely durable and impressive. When you purchase it for someone you care about they will immediately know that your love is undying. Revealing your love for someone through art in stone symbolizes your feelings for them: simple and unbreakable. I should say that my interest in art carved in stone primarily stems from the fact that I have create it myself. For the last twenty years I have been a stone carver and over the course of this time my knowledge of this type of artwork has increased and evolved. When I first began to work with art

      On Postcard Collecting
I've been a collector of postcards on and off. There was a time when I really collected them way back in grade school along with collecting stamps, stickers and stationeries and then my interest changed and then went back to it again a few years ago. At some point in your life, you must have been one too! It's a cheap enough hobby and it's a delight to find really funny or unique postcards! I have them in albums and it's neat to look at, like browsing through photographs. When a family or friend goes somewhere, I ask them to send me one or when I'm away, I would buy for myself and then send some to people! Sending out a postcard is so easy to do here in America where almost every street corner has a mailbox and the postman actually goes out daily to pick up the mails on the boxes! So postcards, local and international stamps are regular items in my purse. Wherever I am, either stuck waiting at the doctor's office, riding the train or just waiting somewhere, I could pop out a postc

      Collecting Porcelain Dolls
By: Jason Petrina Porcelain dolls make great collector’s items. These collectors often decorate their entire homes with their porcelain dolls – making their homes very unique. When people visit, there is always something to talk about. Serious porcelain doll collectors search all over the world for the dolls that they want. You see, dolls that portray famous people are often worth a lot of money – especially if the available dolls that portray those people are limited, such as porcelain dolls that portray Princess Dianna. But collectors also collect unique porcelain dolls that don’t portray anyone famous. The fact that a doll is unique, and that there isn’t another one like it in existence makes it worth something.Finding porcelain dolls that are worth something isn’t as difficult as you might think. There are many people that sell porcelain dolls around the world, and they can often be located and contacted through the Internet. EBay and other online auctions also make fin

      Painting, baking, collecting acorns…
This weekend we visited my parents and had a nice time visiting a farm with all the fall things to do…except it had been raining all day so almost everything was closed. We had fun, got pictures and pumpkins…looked at strawberry cows. Sunday we went to a Halloween event at the local amusement park. We met up with my sil and her daughter…the girls had such a great time. They were adorable in their costumes:) Then whoo-hoo, treated the rust on our bilco doors and then painted them. It was a lot more effort then I had expected. I didn’t think it would be easy, but ugh my poor arm/wrist/hand and back afterwards. Plus, I did this all with R inside playing so although she was amazingly well behaved…I still couldn’t just get it done all at once. There were millions of peeks at her, questions through the door that I needed to keep shut so the fumes didn’t go inside and snack breaks/tv changes The doors look great! Collecting: When is it too much?
At the end of the 90s I ran into a huge problem. I was buried in Star Wars toys. My father had generously built a pegboard wall to hang my Star Wars figures on and it was quickly filling up. The toy collection had also expanded and exploded, engulfing the rest of the room. Not only was my childhood room packed to the gills with toys, but I’d started living on my own and I was quickly getting a secondary collection apart from the main one. Originally I had planned on buying ever single figure that I could along with all the vehicles, but as the years wore on since the rebirth of Star Wars toys I realized that the sneaky devils in Hasbro Castle were going to make Star Wars figures until Armageddon and beyond. Something had to be done to stop the madness, because Hasbro wasn’t going to help me at all. (Here’s the not everything, semi-outdated, but what most of it looks like that’s not in storage post) (more…)

Collecting Art is Child’s Play There have been several reports in the media recently of the growing number of children who are developing their own art collections which are being funded by their wealthy and well connected parents most of whom are themselves seasoned fine art aficionados. Apparently these children are being taken into some of the hottest contemporary galleries around and let loose without any restraints other than the credit limit on their mums amex. Although the motives of the parents may be to expose their children to the joys of fine art while at the same time teaching the value of money, I can’t help but wonder whether they realise how their actions and the actions of their children may be affecting the art market. With works being chosen on the basis of the relation to the child’s primary interest at the time, some children’s collections are being developed around subjects (read fads) such as candy, kittens, comics and all manner of other

A small 1% fee was subtracted, not at all bad considering there were expenses involved in collecting, holding, and mailing the money (although they could also have earned money on it -via interest-, but it is also possible that they are legally prohibited from doing so).We tol

Collecting bad checks – returned check collection options for individuals and businesses
In spite of credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, and various other types of payments, a lot of consumers in the United States still write checks. All businesses and most consumers know that some checks “bounce” (i.e. are returned from the bank as unpaid). Most bounced checks are returned as NSF (non sufficient funds). Not only are NSF checks the most common, they are typically the easiest to collect. NSF usually means a person’s bank account is still open and may have enough funds at a later time to clear the check. Some returned checks may have a return reason that means some type of check fraud. If you receive this type of check you may want to call your local police department to see if they can help.Stop payment and closed account checks are also received by most businesses and sometimes by individuals. These checks are, unfortunately, usually very difficult to collect. If a person has closed their account, they may have also moved. That means the check writer may firs

It isn't unusual for people to have hobbies.  Collecting stuff seems to be a hobby that many enjoy.   Stuff is maybe the wrong word but it is the only one that comes to mind. This car is covered with objects that people collected.  There are plates, and shot glasses and dolls on it that say Minnesota.  There is a mosaic of a Minnesota loon, china plates, and all types of  items that someone purchased for reasons that I don't understand. In this case the collection is not as unusual as the way it is displayed, or where it is displayed.  I kind of like it.   I never really understood having a collection.  At times I collect parking tickets on my car, an occupational hazard and business expense I associate with having listings in downtown Saint Paul.
