A self portrait in collage. It's challenging fun to create with cutting and tearing of various types of paper and layering. This is 12x16" on a pintura painting panel base painted with burnt sienna acrylic on rough watercolor paper. A collage using marbled paper, linen, handmade paper beads, scrapbook paper, rice paste and buttonhole twist thread. 8x10" on fluted black matboard.Although I did some planning before gluing, some of this is done on the fly, spontaneously. Every element affects every other element, moving one piece or changing size or shape seems to require adjustments in other areas and I really wanted to utilize the design on the beautiful gold metallic marbled paper as well. Sky, clouds, rocks, and a stream are represented by the background paper, so it's a very important design element.collage is really interesting artwork to create, I am having a great time with these!Thanks for looking at my work! Just by way of breaking the silence I have done this little collage in celebration of Autumn this year. The colours of the leaves on our trees have been breathtaking and astounding.......more so than usual !! I have had a very busy period at college lately and have found it really difficult to put time aside for crafting, much to my annoyance. Sorting out some stuff in my studio I came across this little collage I did ages ago and decided to use a little coloured pencil on it just to bring it together. I'm quite pleased with it and I'm going to mount it on canvas and varnish it to protect it. I think I'll probably paint the surrounding canvas black though - I'll leave a border showing like here. I've never been one that's been a big fan of collage art. It always looks so messy and unfinished to me (probably because I can be such a precise painter). My mind was changed when I discovered this artist, Anahata Katkin - I really like her work alot, everything about it! So much so, that it inspired me to try my hand at collage. Before I did that, I sent her an email and asked if she could recommend a good book. Amongst the many things she told me, she said that she never read any books on the art and that she just went for it and did her own thing. She did give me a few good resources to check out which proved to be very worthy (including a couple of artists' who's work I liked very much too).The photo above is the work in progress. This is work that I did ages ago, but decided to upload today, after I reorganized my site.  I used a free graphics tool called “Serif Photo Plus” to create it.  I blended in a lot of Karate images from Mitis Karate class.

Another exercise to encourage your creative spirit. This was a favorite of my students when I was teaching in high schools. I think they liked it because it helped them get a clearer picture of themselves. I do hope if you do this exercise it will be enriching. It’s a simple exercise and actually fun. You will be creating a collage of all your favorite objects. You will need a pile of your favorite magazines, a piece of cardboard and some paste. Scissors are optional as is a varnish to seal the final exercise. In short you will go through the magazines and collect any pictures that create interest or joy in you when you see them and either tear or cut them out. You can also collect these pictures over a period of time from whatever resources are available, put them in a folder and then use them later for the collage. Having a folder of your favorite objects is always a great idea for any artist. When you want to work but the ideas are a little low you can always gain inspiration
