For reasons I no longer remember, I put my cfide folder in a non default place when installing CF8 on a few of my servers.  Not a big deal really.  I upgraded to CF 8.1 today and everything went quite well, however I noticed that the installer didn't see my cfide path, and instead prompted me to use the default one.  So if you are updating to CF8.1 and don't have it in the usual area, don't expect the installer to know that.  Luckily the installer does prompt you to confirm the path, so its easy to adjust.

At flex camp (which was great) last Friday I ran into a few people who live in the Seacoast of New Hampshire (or on the border in Main and Massachusetts) and do ColdFusion development.  It is always nice to meet new CF people and it surprised me that there were so many I hadn't known about right here in my back yard.  If I had been thinking I would have gotten your business cards so we could continue to network later. Did you know Network Solutions offers coldfusion web hosting?  I didn't either.  A client of ours wanted us to try it to see if our CMS could run on it.  Sure, why not. I never got direct access to the control panel, so I can't speak to how it is for controlling aspects of your site.  You can set up a db with it, but you can't set up a datasource.  To set up a datasource you must call tech support and request it.  They respond that it will take 1 to 3 business days to set up the data source.  [More]

I am in the market for a new domain name for an upcoming project of mine.  I figure if I can get a domain that already has a PR and inbound links all the better.  I found this site seodomains.org that shows you domains about to expire that have some PR, inbound links, etc.  Many of the Page Ranks are invalid once you look into them, but others are real.  Apparently its only $14 to get one. At any rate, today I see that coldfusion-webhosting.com is available.  It has a valid Page Rank of 2 already.  If you were thinking of getting a domain for your hosting operation, maybe this would be a good one to pick up?  I have yet to find a good name to fit my project, so I continue to look. Cold Fusion is Macromedia's (and before that Allaire's) server-side scripting technology. It supports a range of databases including MS Access, dBASE, FoxPro, and Paradox. ColdFusion is used to create rich dynamic web sites. It is tag-based language and is easy to learn. ColdFusion enables the web developers to easily develop and deploy dynamic web sites, content publishing systems, self-service applications, e-commerce sites and more. The difference between HTML and CFM is: all ColdFusion tags start with the letters “CF”, allowing you to tell what’s static HTML and what’s ColdFusion code. In testing our CMS with CF8 I have only found one small issue.  With the editor we licensed of course.  KTML works well with CF8 except for some image and file browsing.  Turns out there is an easy code fix for this however. You will see an error saying something along the lines of Cannot open Class plugins.modules.image.service.ktml4_mspl_image.  The debugging errors are not accurate as it is a general error if anything goes wrong when calling a function in KTML. After a little poking around I see that there is an error calling one of the functions.  getfileinfo  Turns out CF8 also has a function named getfileinfo and thus the error on CF8 and not CF6 or 7. This weekend I was having trouble connecting to the Google Adsense API.  I was certain my headers were set up correctly, and yet google responded that my headers didn't exist.  Turns out I had my namespace incorrect.  Once that was rectified the API was easy to get at.  I haven't played with the data all that much, but they sure make it easy thus far. I see that Google has released the API for adsense to all developers now.  I have a possible project to use it with and haven't found anyone that has done it with ColdFusion yet.  I will not have a chance to play with it for a few weeks at least, but I will be sure to post here and release the CF API if no others have been found before then.  If you know of one, post a comment! For those that are not familiar, you can use the API for many things.  One is to share revenue with other users.  So if you have a site with many content contributors you can let them create adsense accounts (or use their already existing) and specify the percentage shared.  It is a good way to encourage user participation for many sites.  You can set the shared % that you keep from 0-75%.  Plus you get a bonus if the user reaches certain milestones within the first 180 days.

Is there any interest in having a small to medium sized conference on ColdFusion or perhaps web development in general, but on a cruise boat?  It is often done in other industries, why not in ours?  In doing a bit of research I see that someone has done it or tried to do it a few years ago. I wonder how it went... If there were sufficient interest I wouldn't mind investigating further.  Couldn't be too hard to put together something on a small scale.  Something large like cfunited would certainly be another story.

Installed Coldfusion MX7 on Vista successfully. It even started up but that is the limit of my testing. Dreamweaver 8 also installed OK and ran. Macromedia Fireworks installed but an odd Vista message was displayed stating that due to an incompatibility during the install process that the color system was changing to Vista Home Basic, from Home Premium. Interesting.   Microsoft Expressions, a Dreamweaver like app, needless to say installed ok. And Apache 2.2.4 said it installed OK but was lying. I was displayed at least one message stating that there was an error. Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition which went on OK but does come with some baggage called SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The installation of that came a cropper and gave out some messages about compatibility and stopped installing though staying within the setup process. There were some patches to download. Downloaded the first 35mb patch (you call a 35mb file a patch? Ed) but it got stuck and aband
