Such things don’t bother me and I take these things lightly
Thomas Friedman has a rather provocative column in the New York Times today. Not only does it suggest the next president of the United States will inherit an on-going cold war with Iran over its nuclear ambitions and sphere of influence in the Middle East but it also suggests that in this war, the U.S., or "Team America", if you will, is losing. Friedman writes
For now, Team America is losing on
As Dmitry Medvedev was being sworn in as Russia’s president, the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, delivered a scathing critique of recent United States policy. He accused the U.S. of trying to provoke a new Cold War by dismantling progress with Russia since the fall of communism. The 1990 Nobel Peace prize winner denounced NATO’s expansion in Eastern Europe as an attempt to extend the U.S. sphere of influence into Russia’s backyard."The Americans promised that NATO wouldn't move beyond the boundaries of Germany after the Cold War but now half of central and eastern Europe are members, so what happened to their promises? It shows they cannot be trusted."His comments mirror Kremlin opposition to Georgia and Ukraine joining the military alliance.Gorbachev took aim at the planned mi
Russia's president has ruled out a return to the Cold War mentality that almost brought about nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the West. However, at Nato-Russia summit on Friday Vladimir Putin warned the military alliance against seeking to expand its influence further eastwards."None of the global players - Europe, the United States or Russia - is interested in returning to the past," Putin said at a news conference after his meeting with Nato leaders."Let's be friends, guys, and engage in an honest dialogue."Putin, whose term in office ends next month, called the meeting "positive", but the main issues behind the frayed relations between Russia and the alliance remained unresolved.'Direct threat'On Thursday, Nato refused to grant the former Soviet states of Ukraine and Georgia a r
During the Cold War conflict, a period in which the differences of opinion between the Allied occupying forces and the Soviet Union become ever sharper, an airplane accident occurs over Tempelhof Airport during the Berlin Blockade, with grave consequences. The tragic collision of an American airplane carrying relief goods with a Russian fighter plane costs not only the lives of both crews, but also overstretches the already tense relations between the occupying forces. Under the command of the merciless Stalin, the Red Army has undergone a tremendous expansion at the end of the Second World War and has more-or-less been waiting for the right time to extend their territory to the West by attacking the NATO.Features Authentic "Cold War" era Variable squads with powerful squad leaders and p

Priyanka Chopra is a little confused about all the animosity between her and Kareena Kapoor. Kareena Kapoor lately made a statement about Priyanka not being worthy of being called an actress."Kareena is a more senior and hopefully more mature actress than me. I guess she's qualified to comment on my calibre. When I reach her level of experience maybe I too can comment on the calibre of my contemporaries and juniors. I'd just like to let my work speak for me. And that includes Aitraaz where Kareena was also a part."

A favorite conservative myth is that Ronald Reagan won the cold war when largely he was just the American president who happened to be in office at the right time. The real hero was Gorbachev who realized the futility of continuing the cold war. Ronald Reagan does deserve credit too, but not for standing up to the Soviet Union but for being willing to understand that situations had changed and his old policies no longer applied. Reagan also differed from many other hard line conservatives in also dreaming of a world without nuclear weapons. Martin Walker discusses these points in a review of books on nuclear weapons for The New York Times Sunday Book Review:
According to both Schell and Rhodes, the cold war ended not because Reagan stood firm at Reykjavik but because Gorbachev and his supporters had already decided to stop waging it, or as Gorbachev’s adviser Giorgy Arbatov once put it to this reviewer in Moscow, “to take your enemy away.” Gorbachev understood that the arms race

COLD WAR VETERANS ASSOCIATION (CWVA)Legislative Update - June 25, 2007 In the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed by the House is a provision, SEC 556 COLD WAR VICTORY MEDAL. The Senate version does not include a Cold War Medal, but S.1097 "The Cold War Medal Act of 2007" is very much alive, and our greatest need is for enough cosponsors to show that it is the will of the Senate (and yes, I did deliver all the letters to Senators while I was at the Capitol - thanks to all of you who wrote)..Options now: 1) We ask DOD to support this medal; 2) we get COSPONSORS FOR S.1097 ASAP and make a strong push for inclusion in the NDAA, 3) try for a floor amendment during Senate debate, and 4) push for a Cold War Medal to emerge from House-Senate conference. The best insurance we can get is to get cosponsors and pledges of strong support from our senators. Each of you has to try and get your two senators to cosponsor S.1097. Tim Woodward: Cold War vets share their stories from Idaho's nuclear sites - Idaho StatesmanEdition Date: 01/22/07Not many people can claim to have driven a truck down an icy road into the Bruneau Canyon pulling a trailer with a nuclear warhead on it. Andy Kimbrell is one of them. Kimbrell was among those who responded to a Statesman story last week on the Cold War nuclear-missile complexes buried in the deserts of Ada and Owyhee counties in the 1960s.When I was writing the story, I couldn't find a single one of the people who worked at the sites. Since it was published, they've been doing everything but crawling out of missile silos.Roy Coon of Emmett helped build the Ada County site. Boisean Merlyn Knight learned computer skills on the guidance computer from one of the underground complexes. Kimbrell, also of Boise, worked at all three of the sites. The stories they tell are of an era and mindset that now seem like science fiction."I've been a carpenter all my life, and that was t

Jack Hicks: Cold War vets did their partColumn by Jack HicksIt takes more than a little effort to locate the unobtrusive grave of Robert C. Von Luehrte in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. And if you travel to Washington, or other sites where military veterans are honored, you may never see a commemoration to America's Cold War warriors. If ever a group was largely forgotten, it's those soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who served their country between World War II and the Korean War, or between Korea and the Vietnam War.During a total period of about 17 years, millions of men, and women, served in the armed forces. They were the real or perceived barrier to worldwide domination by the Soviet Union and others in the Communist Bloc. The warriors were draftees, and those who joined the several branches of the service, including reservists who spent various lengths of time on active duty. Many who joined did so to "get it over with," because the draft was inevitable.Sometimes, especial

The immigration bill is officially dead (free registration required). In my view, this is a bad thing. While this bill was far from perfect, so much of America wants a change in immigration policy. It is a shame to deny them an overhaul. I sincerely hope the entire issue isn’t off the table; Americans deserve reform.
A vote of no-confidence against embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is scheduled to move forward in the Senate on Monday. If the symbolic measure, stating that Gonzales “no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and the American people,” passes this procedural hurdle it will be brought for a full vote shortly. If the no-confidence vote is scheduled, some think Gonzales will resign before the voting actually takes place.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said “there were no grounds for talk of a new Cold War,” adding: ‘"I know people talk about, throw around terms like new Cold War. As somebody who came out of that period as a specialist in it I think the parallels ... frankly, they have no basis whatsoever."’ Our disagreements with Russia are by no means what they used to be, and “throw around” terms as stated by the Secretary of State and the “parallels” between then and now sounds like an apt response. But, just as Iraq is no Vietnam, a new Cold War would not have to be based word for word on the old Cold War. Russia is none too thrilled about the U.S.’ planes of placing missile interceptors in Poland, nor the planned radar in the Czech Republic; if it makes them feel any better, Democrats don’t much care for it either. Russia is also not all gushy-eyed about the possible independence of Kosovo. Setting aside any media alarmist reactions to the previous disag

A new documentary entitled “Nazis and the CIA: How the Cold War Began” by high school sophomore students Daniel Solis and Richard Li tells the entire story of how the Cold War began. It is important to know about the mistakes our country has made in the past, and we must learn from them in order to better protect ourselves in the future.
Synopsis: The triumphant victory over Germany and Hitler’s Nazi regime in the spring of 1945 was an important event in U.S. and world history. Six months later, Nazi war criminals came to work for the OSS, later renamed the CIA. They fueled the fire in the United States that was the hate and fear of the Cold War. It is a tragedy that the United States would work with a former enemy to fight a new rival.

I've been reading quite a lot about spies at the moment. In particular the Cambridge spy ring which reads as good as any fictional spy novel ever could.
Maybe it's just because the political climate has changed so much in recent years but I'm starting to look back at the Cold War with considerable nostalgia? Although it can be viewed as a giant stalemate that in fact actually created stability

Representative Brian Duprey said the day would recognize the contributions of military troops who served during the Cold War era.The Cold War was a time of tension and conflict, but not outright military engagement, between the U.S. and the Soviet Union from the mid-1940s until 1991, when the Soviet Union was dissolved.A public hearing on the bill will be held Monday. The Cold War Veterans Association says some 17 other state have already designated May first as Cold War Victory Day.

We were never really friends, and to be honest he kind of scared me. He was super punk rock. MM: CWK Bassist, Graphic Artist, Intimidator. NATO: A Cold War Relic? Monday, March 12, 2007European and U.S. officials are asking, has the necessity for the trans-Atlantic alliance passed? The European Union and the United States are locked in bitter competition over nato’s role in the defense of Europe. Some people dismiss the rivalry, saying the EU will never be independently strong enough to take nato’s place. However, as Europe continues to advance toward creating its own independent military, nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) may become a Cold War relic. In addition to the unmistakable strengthening of Europe’s military power and its growing confidence in handling military missions on its own, faultlines in the Atlantic alliance are showing, with the U.S. and Europe both showing themselves increasingly willing to sidestep the nato bureaucracy in order to pursue their own goals. The beginning of the end for nato may trace back to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991—the very event that, ironically, demonstrat

Make no mistake about it, Nicholson believes VA Benefits are Welfare and that Veterans do not deserve benefits. He is behind the recent review of all P.T.S.D. cases and although he will eagerly "investigate" any issue, no matter how frivolous, that can be used as an excuse to take benefits from Veterans.Yet he has refused to respond to any of our numerous, well documented, complaints about Veterans being victims of VA Corruption.Steve Buyer is Chairman of the House VA Committee. Like Nicholson he harbors a strong belief that Disabled Veterans are bums, and that the VA Benefits they earned are a form of welfare. Buyer is also a politic
It's hard to believe that there are many out there at this point who haven't heard of the hyped indie rockers Cold War Kids, but consider this a mop-up operation for all the as-of-yet uninformed. The California band released their first LP in 2006, Robbers and Cowards, on Downtown Records, the same outfit that has signed Art Brut and Gnarls Barkley. Likely the closest thing to a ballad on the album, Hospital Beds builds dramatically with the help of a very epic-sounding piano melody. Check them out if you haven't already, you'll be glad you did."Hospital Beds" - Cold War KidsCold War Kids: Official SiteCold War Kids: Myspace

DE NIRO PLANS COLD WAR TRILOGYRobert De niro wants his Cold War movie The Good Sheperd to be the first of a trilogy of films about the conflict. The actor/director claims the movie has turned him into a Cold War fanatic, after first becoming interested in the rivalry between the US and Soviet Union as a child. De Niro says, "I'm fascinated by the Cold War. Especially the Cold War in Berlin. As a kid, I was here a few times and went to East Berlin. I found the whole period amazing. It's fascinating stuff. Everybody has a fascination with it. "I'd love to do a second part, from 1961 when the Berlin Wall went up to 1989 when the Wall fell. And then I'd like to do a third part from 1989 to the present." De Niro adds his belief the Cold War may have never ended: "I always wondered before 'When the Cold war ended, would it ever be over?'. I used to think the other shoe's going to drop. It dropped. Nuclear weapons are easier to get and more countries are getting them. It's a little sc

A new National History Day documentary entitled “Nazis in the CIA: How the Cold War Began” by high school sophomore students Daniel Solis and Richard Li tells the entire story of how the Cold War began. This is the first version of our entry in the Senior Division Group Documentary category and any comments are welcomed. This year’s theme is Triumph & Tragedy in history.

I recently learned I’m eligible for a Cold War service medal for my late 70s-early 80s stint in the Air Force. Not being the sort who delights in wearing my old uniform bedecked with medals every Fourth of July, I probably won’t take the time to find all the missing paperwork to prove I’m entitled to it.
Besides, the Cold War was a pretty sweet deal for me. I flew around the world in my own semi-private airplane, visiting 24 countries on every continent save Antarctica and Australia. Most of my missions were logistical trips to deliver dependent household goods here or a planeload of live goats there (that’s a story for another day though). And despite my training, I never seriously believed the Cold War would turn hot. The Soviets and the Chinese understood that nukes equaled death, proving that the principle of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) wasn’t so mad after all.
Besides, if they’d invaded, we could have easily co-opted them by meeting th
Because Viktor Yushchenko refused Putin's diktat, Gazprom just cut their Ukrainian pipes. Vlad the Impaler wanted Yushchenko dead but could just alter his face : now he doesn't care whether people die in this indecent and unfair armwrestling contest.Russia is back to fascism but no one seems to care. Germany ? Gerhard Schröder just joined the board of a Gazprom subsidiary. The US ? Dubya can't locate "Ukrainia" on the map of Texas and has trouble translating his one-size-fits-all terror / freedom / democracy speech in Uzbek (hell, making friends with local despot Islam Karimov fulfills his understanding of Islam agenda). France, then ? Duh ! We're not interested in human rights either... actually, we're not even fighting for our gas or oil supplies anymore since we found the best way to solve both heating and gas consumption problems : we burn our own cars.Sign of the times, Jews are fleeing Russia. Those who didn't reach Israel's shores land in Germany, where the Berlin commun
