After a miserable last year that was mired in controversy of many types, the Atlanta Falcons are looking to rebuild their team. New head coach Mike Smith looked over this weeks mini camp with eager anticipation to see signs of what his new team might be able to deliver. Though some of the faces might be familiar to Smith, this was the first time he saw some of them as their head coach. Among the veterans that could top anyone's nfl picks were Keith Brooking, Joe Horn, D.J. Shockley, and Michael Turner. In addition to these battle (both media and gridiron) tested veterans, all eyes will turn to the Draft Day live feed from Falcons' Training Camp in Flowery Branch, Georgia on April 26th. The Falcons have one first round pick, number three overall, and three second round

Hello readers! So sorry about the delay for a new post! I have had some recent computer problems, but finally got a half-decent laptop, so I’m back in business. Thank you for being patient, if there are any of you out there!Last night marked the Opening Night of the 2008 Major League Baseball season and needless to say, it jump started in good fashion. The Washington Nationals’ new ballpark was christened with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for a Nats win. Most clubs open up their seasons today or tomorrow, including our beloved Mets, down in Florida against the Marlins. I am sure we all look forward to a great and exciting season ahead of us. Don’t forget to keep up with my pre-season predictions! So there are a few things I would like to touch on in this post. Although many of the colleges want you to believe you have to be the top of the top for baseball college recruiting, that isn't always so. In fact, many times colleges are assuming that they are not looking at the top 5% because those student athletes may already be spoken for. Some things to remember:1. Grades count. Sure, athletic ability is important, but do you have the grades to get into the college admissions office and catch their eye even without your sports ability? You should have grades that support you as a well-rounded student, not just an image of a ball player alone.2. Do you know what a college coach values in a player? Is it the same as a high school coach or a teen-level coach? What do you bring to the coach that is different from the myriad of other players your age and
Obviously this isn't Yankee related, but I thought it was funny, and that you might be interested. It does involve a former Yankee, though.Tim Buss is the strength and condition coach of the Cubs, and he drives a 1995 Nissan Sentra. At least he did up until this week when members of the Chicago Cubs pitching staff took a sledgehammer to it. " The car windows all had been smashed in, the front, back and sides all were severely dented and the smoking guns—a couple of baseball bats and balls—were strategically placed in the windshield." Here, take a look:From Paul Sullivan: When the Cubs began practice in the morning, Aramis Ramirez pointed to a wrecked '95 Nissan Sentra near the Cubs bullpen and asked: "Hey 'Bussy,' what's your car doing on the ramp?"Buss looked over at
Keith Olbermann disses Major League Baseball for their action against the Red Sox coaches, nice.Well, the Red Sox ended a threatened boycott today of their final spring training game in Florida and their flight to Japan, as they resolved a dispute against Major League Baseball over paying coaches for the season-opening trip overseas. According to Boston.com, a source said that all staff associated with the trip will be compensated. The game against Toronto started an hour late when the team voted unanimously not to play or go to Tokyo after learning coaches and staff would not get a $40,000 appearance fee for the Japan trip. Players said they believed that fee was part of the original deal.According to the major league source, in the past, the coaches' compensation has come from the players
Three coaches of Italian giants AS Roma will run a football workshop in Dhaka, during May of this year. The programme will be organised by Singapore-based advertising firm DENTSU and YKK Bangladesh under the auspices of YKK of Japan. The Roma coaches - including former Roma defender Maurizio Turone who won 227 caps for the Serie A side from 1979-87 - will run the three-day workshop among 350 kids (boys and girls) between the age of 10-14 years. They will also work with 30 local coaches. The 55-year-old Turone was Lazio's technical director from 1992-97, the technical director of Genoa's Serie A and B sides from 1998-2005 before joining as technical director of AC Roma School of Oceania in 2006.In this regard, a joint meeting was held at the BFF Bhaban on Monday among YKK managing director Hiro
Soccer coach Guus Hiddink has said that he may stop coaching all together when he is done coaching the Russian national team. His contract there ends in 2010. Hiddink, 61, said he would like to take a more advisory role in the sport. He said: “If I don’t become a bitter old jealous man by then I might continue. Actually, I’m enjoying my job right now. I get a lot of positive energy working with young people, teaching them a few things. It’s a big motivation for me to keep going.”Hiddink is known as somewhat of a miracle worker. In 1998, he beat the odds and lead Holland to the World Cup semi-finals. In 2002, he repeated the success for the South Korean team, and in 2006, he lead Australia to their first showing since 1974. I think by now most everyone has heard that six Volunteers will miss the Outback Bowl due to grade issues. Three of the players were starters: Lucas Taylor, Rico McCoy and Demonte Bolden. The list also includes Chris Donald, Ricardo Kemp, and Kenny O’Neal.
Many have been quick to jump on Fulmer and the coaching staff for a lack of control and for not being on top of this situation sooner. However, according to Doug Matthews, a radio personality in Nashville and former Tennessee position coach and defensive coordinator, that may not be a fair assessment.
Matthews contends that the University decided to take the academic control away from the Athletic Department several years ago. The old rules allowed the coaches to be involved in this process to monitor a student’s progress but that is no longer the case. According to him, coaches aren’t allowed to even speak to the professors and therefore are “handcuffed by what the rules will allow them to do”. He wa

David Stern is willing to try anything to boost ratings. The latest thing that they are trying in the NBA is making coaches wear mics during the game so that fans can listen on timeouts and such. Sounds like a good idea in theory but many players and coachs aren’t feelin it.
Former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy had a classic reaction. “You’re kidding me,” said Van Gundy. “And head coaches are really going to have to do TV interviews during games?”
Phil Jackson is another coach that didn’t like the idea of it:
“I’m going to stick my foot right in it, too,” Jackson said. “I wasn’t at the league meetings with the coaches this year, and I’m very disappointed in my comrades for rolling over on this so easily.”
“It’s going to be real hard on us coaches,” he said. “We do things in private. It’s an inner sanctum. For people to be in the inner sanctum, where emotions are high … it’s big brother, it’s very big brother. It’s ver
Just hours ago, I wrote about how my anger over the BCS had turned to pure sadness. Well, that didn't last long. Check this out, it's the voting record for every coach who had the power to alter the national title game. Let's look at some highlights, shall we? The coaches for LSU, Ohio State, and Oklahoma voted their team #1. How are they allowed to do this? They obviously are biased.

While I've been to coaching vs. therapy presentations before, they were always lead by coaches. So I thought it'd be particularly refreshing to hear about it from the other side, as it were. Enter Dr. David Orlinsky, noted professor of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago.Of all of his charts and descriptions offered, this was the one I found most helpful in articulating the differences: Good set of distinctions, don't you think? Thanks, David.

If you think playing against the Patriots is bad, try taking your high school football team to Smith Center, Kansas sometime.Smith Center scored 72 points in the first quarter of a high school football game Tuesday night on the way to an 86-0 win over Plainville.Smith Center forced six turnovers in the first quarter as it racked up what is believed to be a record for points in a quarter by a high school team, the paper reported. The previous record was 66 by Prescott, Ariz., in 1925.It was nice of them to call off the dogs after scoring just 72 in the first quarter. But really what were they supposed to do? Start kneeling down in the first quarter? Put the cheerleaders in on offense? By the way, you just know these boys are gettin' laid.By the way, they have outscored their opponents 640-0 this season. I think it's time for them to play the Patriots.(AP)STUB HUB: The Safe Way to Buy & Sell Tickets Online
Yet another pee-wee football coach is in trouble. This time for allegedly attacking one of his players. Did we mention the player is 12-years old?“I was in pain and I was shocked,” 12-year-old Ryan Mullarney said. This, after his assistant football coach allegedly attacked him after a play.Cudahy Middle School’s Assistant Football Coach Michael Crawley is suspended after allegedly attacking Mullarney.Did we mention the kid weighs 85 pounds?Authorities say Crawley was upset when his own son got injured during a scrimmage. He then allegedly attacked Mullarney, body slamming him to the turf.“The sixth grade coach came at me, swearing, and he picked me up by my facemask, spun me in the air and slammed me on the ground,” Ryan Mullarney said.Yeah, that's normal.Once again, I call for unusual and extremely cruel punishment for people like this. The first college hoops poll of the season was released today and IU is represented as a top 10 preseason selection by the coaches. The Hoosiers are slotted at No. 9, just behind Michigan State.
When was the last time IU was ranked this high going into the season? (To be perfectly honest, I can’t remember. Bonus points to anyone who knows.)
Two of IU’s non-conference opponents, Kentucky and Southern Illinois, also made the cut. The Wildcats, who visit Assembly Hall on December 8, are No. 22 and the Salukis, who will host the Hoosiers on December 1, are No. 23.
Besides IU and Michigan State, the only other Big Ten teams mentioned were Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois who were among the “others receiving votes.”
I’m inclined to say the coaches got it right this time as I can make a case for each team ranked ahead of us for the time being. Duke is, as usual, overrated at No. 11. And two-time defending national champion, Florida, seems a bit underrated. They
Remember back in August when we all were talking about where former Steelers coach Bill Cowher would coach next? The talk was hot that Bill would end up in one of three places come opening day in 2008 - Cleveland, Carolina, or New York with the Giants. Well, we’re now six weeks into the 2007 season, and unless one of those three teams has a major collapse, we may see Cowher still in front of a TV camera doing Sunday morning talk on CBS, where he’s done a solid job in his first season. Considering that the Browns and Giants started opening day with awful losses, you almost wrote his ticket to one of those cities after the first game. But give the Browns and Giants credit, they have become two of the surprise teams in 2007.
The Browns have relied on, and gotten, solid play from little regard quarterback Derek Anderson. The former Ravens QB has led the Browns to a 3-3 mark at their bye week, which in quite a few circles is two to three more wins than most people had them wi
In a recent column for FOXSports.com, Ian O’Connor criticizes the people who credit the NFL head coaches as geniuses. O’Connor discusses Jets head coach Eric Mangini among many others.
“These days, a guy can go 10-6, get blown away in his first playoff game, and still show up on The Sopranos so Artie Bucco can call him “Man-genius.”
Eric Mangini is the poster coach for the counterfeit NFL genius. Fresh off his charmed rookie season with the Jets, Mangini played Mozart — a legitimate genius — on big, booming speakers during training camp before his team went out and lost five of its first six games.
Mangini was smart enough to weaken an offensive line charged to protect a noodle-armed quarterback, and to do it by running off Pete Kendall in the name of saving the Jets’ billionaire owner a million bucks. He was also smart enough to rob himself of any benefit-of-the doubt currency by adopting a charm-free public persona in the world’s most com

When NFL franchises pluck a head coach from the college ranks, it has been a practice that has seen mixed results. Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer won Super Bowls. Steve Spurrier? Not so much. Let's take a look and see how some coaches who went from college to the NFL and back to college again are faring in their second go 'round.- Butch Davis, North Carolina: Davis was a successful coach at the University of Miami, going 49-24 before getting hired by the Cleveland Browns. In four seasons there, Davis managed to take the team to one playoff appearance before resigning in the middle of the 2004 season. He has gone on to North Carolina and has compiled a 2-5 record in his first season.- Nick Saban, Alabama: After guiding LSU to the national championship, Saban went to Miami, going 15-17 befo

(CSTV U-WIRE) HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men’s hockey team has received a pair of top-10 national preseason rankings. (CSTV U-WIRE) DETROIT — The coaches and media agree. Michigan should finish fourth in the CCHA this season. The preseason conference polls were released Tuesday at CCHA Media Day. Career coaches work with people who wish to improve their work satisfaction, change jobs, or make a career change. Career coaching is an interactive process of exploring work-related issues leading to effective action in which the coach acts as both a catalyst and facilitator. Coaches assist individuals to find their ideal career or position themselves for promotion, recognition or growth in their current field. They also help individuals who are managers and want to be more effective.
I love Tennessee football. Every year, I bleed orange, but lately I've been weeping orange. Today's game was unbelievably bad. For a while I forgot it was only the third week in September - it was such a horror show, I thought we were celebrating Halloween.Something's got to be done. A decade ago, UT was a team to be feared. These days, we're the team that's going to get fried - SEC style.I don't know what the rest of the season will bring, but after watching this team for fourteen seasons, I'm noticing an ominous pattern - the teams with younger coaches are mightily outplaying UT.As someone once said, "Everything rises or falls on leadership." Maybe it's time to term-limit our coaches or cast aside our dreams. If we can't win the crucial games, then we can't win championships. And to allow Florida to almost score 60 points against our team - that's almost impeachable. Perhaps the News Sentinel is suing the wrong group...

By Dave Cisar Some youth football teams have already started practicing; others will start next week like us. The common denominator is that for most of us is, we will be practicing in the heat. There are three major problems youth football players have in hot weather, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These problems are caused by heat and dehydration, but by taking a few simple steps, it is possible to prevent them.Heat cramps are muscle contractions, usually in the calf or hamstring muscles. These contractions are spasm like and quite painful. The cause is heat and dehydration. Rest, massaging or stretching the muscle and water are all that can be done for this, they eventually pass.Heat exhaustion is also a result of excessive heat and dehydration. The signs of heat exhaustion include paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and a moderately increased temperature (101-102 degrees F). Rest and water may help in mild heat exhaustion, and ice packs and a cool environ

The tether connecting Philadelphia Eagles strongside linebacker Chris Gocong to defensive coordinator Jim Johnson and linebackers coach Sean McDermott will be severed Monday night at Baltimore, and Johnson is eager to see the results. So are a lot of other people, because the 6-2, 263-pound Gocong is the player whose selection with the 71st pick of the 2006 draft created a stir for several reasons, including:He played at Division I-AA Cal-Poly, where football is, at best, an afterthought. The Eagles traded up five places to make sure they got him.The Eagles almost immediately disclosed plans to convert him from defensive end to linebacker.Gocong's debut as a linebacker was delayed a year because he was placed on injured reserve after suffering a neck stringer early in last year's training camp. And the Eagles made yet another curious move along the way: They released the starting strongside linebacker of the previous three seasons, Dhani Jones, and installed Gocong as the No. 1 linebac

Tom Leach over at Turf Toe takes a look at the career of the late Bill Walsh and if he would be considered as one of the four faces of an NFL Head Coaches version of Mount Rushmore. Leach makes his list of four.

So, who would you put on a Mount Rushmore of all-time NFL head coaches?
Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said “You start with Brandon (Jacobs) as the guy with Rueben (Droughns) competing for as much playing time as he can get and Brandon trying to hold off and trying to get as much as he can hold on to. But, I mean, there are other guys there too. Derrick Ward, is a young guy that we are anxious to see what he can do. Again, as Tom (Coughlin) talked about, there is some interesting competition at certain positions and it is probably not proper for me to say that I think this guy is going to start. But right now you got to say that Brandon is the guy we feel confident in to be the running back to carry the ball 20-25 times a game, but we will let it all play out.” Reported by Michael Eisen, giants.com

This book outlined a great framework for success based on 10 topics. Seven of the topics came to mind in relation to my coaching experience.
I stumbled upon this eBook in a contest from Essential Keystrokes.
At first glance, I thought it was just another book on success, a topic I’m very familiar with as I’ve read hundreds of books on this subject.
Never Stop Learning!
This was probably the most valuable lesson I learned in my meeting with legendary coach John Smith. Coaches are teachers, and teachers make mistakes sometimes. You have to try new things. Experiment. See what works for one athlete, which may not work for another. Even after producing several world class athletes, John admits he is still learning.

Jordan of BlogCritics.org writes his thoughts and dissects the pros and cons for each head coach in the AFC East.
Eric Mangini, The New York Jets
Mangini, at 36 years old, is just getting started, but got off on the right foot last season when his team finished 10-6. His sophomore year will be one in which fans will get a better idea of the person known as “Mangenius.”
Pros: Mangini is one of the hardest working people in the NFL. After starting out in the pros as a 23-year-old ball boy, he climbed the ranks and landed a job as a head coach. He was mentored by Bill Belichick and learned how to coach defense from him. Mangini was part of the Patriots’ coaching staff when their defense was unstoppable and full of Pro Bowl talent. As a head coach, Mangini is not afraid to be bold and surprising on the field and, off the field, he possesses a talent for drafting gifted players.
Cons: Even with Mangini’s potential, the Jets might not be playoff material quite yet. Th
The PFA is a great website for an insight into the goings on of a Professional Football player and is a great read for anyone interested in Football or pursuing a career in football. The PFAs chairman is my old Charlton Athletic colleague Chris Powell,(Chris's PFA interview) and is packed with information including loads of player interviews.Chris points to the role of the PFA in his interview which is undervalued and underused by its members (Football players) saying : "I think some players still don't recognise what benefits they can get (from the PFA), how can they be helped with their financial planning and looking ahead to the future, and life outside football".The website has some short but insightful interviews with Professional Footballers and does not just concentrate on the star names, but goes through the leagues picking the thoughts of players from all over the country. A refreshing change to hear the opinions of players on the fringe of stardom. It also has a hot seat, cur
Eager to help more students pass the state's standardized math test, some school districts are turning to instructional coaches to give teachers real-time advice as they try to sharpen students' skills. It seems to be working for Brian Coffey, a first-year science teacher at Seattle's Aki Kurose Middle School who was assigned to fill in for a math teacher who recently went on maternity leave. Two math coaches, one based at the school and another who travels the district, regularly sit in on his classes and offer tips on how to connect better with students. This from Teacher Magazine.
When the high-profile college basketball coaches Tubby Smith, Bob Huggins, Billy Gillispie and John Beilein left their teams for new jobs this spring, speculation was widespread about the reactions of the players who had signed national letters of intent with the universities they were leaving.
As of this week, only one of those 12 players had asked for a release from his letter of intent, said officials at Kentucky (Smith), Kansas State (Huggins), Texas A&M (Gillispie) and

Continuing on with our bashing of the coaches’ wives of the SEC, we take a look at the Western Division:
Suzanne Tuberville (Auburn)
Okay, so this is a cropped pic from when the Tubervilles were meeting with some councilmen or something, but from what I can see, alls I can say is, “way to go Tubs!” I mean, even though she looks younger in this picture than pictures from like 10 years ago (that’s money well spent btw), Suzanne could very well qualify as a “trophy wife.” Well, at least there’s one trophy on your mantle.
Terry Saban (Bama)
Okay, so this is one of the pictures where I’m not completely certain that it’s the coach’s wife, but as far as I can tell, she is. Theoretically, this is back when they were making residence in Baton Rouge seeing as how there’s a tiger in the background (wrong colors, but that’s the Saban’s for ya), and it seems nice that Terry was able to get into her tiger costume f
So, the NFL, feeling the crunch of the offseason news-less football black hole, and posted a feature about Coaches’ wives being the real MVP’s or some kind of crappy statement like that. That got me to thinking, what’s the status of the wives in the SEC? Deep South Sports had a great feature about it a while ago, and so we thought we’d like to have our own look (East wives first, West later):
*Disclaimer: These pictures may or may not actually be the people that I claim them to be, and if they are not, don’t blame me, blame Google*
Shelley Meyer (Florida)
- This wife, brought to you by the Letter “E.” Lady’s sporting 4 of em in her name. I wouldn’t be surprised if her middle name was Stefene or maybe even Eeeee! Also, apparently the whole one arm extended thing runs in the family.
Katharyn Richt (Georgia)
- Katharyn, could you spell your name any more awkwardly? How about Kahthahrynne? But that aside, the good Mrs. Richt h
The field of coaching is relatively new, so here are 7 characteristics which will help identify an effective coach:1-Personal Congruence- What the coach communicates nonverbally is consistent with his/her verbal message to client.2-Empathy- The coach must be able to put aside personal references in order to understand the world of the client, and then communicate back to the client that his/her information has been understood.3-Versatility- A requirement to learn new skills based on a growing knowledge of differences and an exploration of how different people are likely to perceive the coach’s unique diversity.4-Genuineness- This refers to the sense that a person is authentic and is not “acting out” the role of their profession as a coach.5-Respect for others- How much does the coach value the person in which he/she is working not simply because of the client’s profession or status?6-Competency in communication- To be seen as a competent communicator, a coach needs to convey, b
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD, GREAT AND EXCELLENT PROFESSIONAL COACHES by MANOJ SHARMAThere are many certified coaches out there in the world today. Many of the certifications are not worth the paper they are printed on. (But that is another story) Most of them do not actively coach. Out of the active ones, the majority are nothing more than average. Some are good, few are great and fewer still are truly excellent.Where a coach stands and the quality of results a coach produces are dependent on many factors. One thing which holds true is that...The Good are PassionateGood professional coaches exhibit the best traits of passion. The love what they do intensely. They are warm, personable and the enthusiasm they generate is contagious. Their passion is a like an internal fire that keeps them going regardless of the circumstances. This is also a prerequisite for professional coaches who stay the course and keep developing within their profession. The Great are CompassionateThe great build up

The Clanton Advisor reported on a story this week about coaches trying to keep homeschoolers from participating in public school sports.
“I don’t see how I could put a home schooled player ahead of one of the guys who is here all day long. It just doesn’t seem fair to me for the kids here at the school.”
WHY NOT?!
Do homeschoolers not pay the same taxes as public school parents? Are they not American citizens? This kind of exclusionary attitude is what makes sports so intolerable for most kids. I’m sure there are some great high school coaches out there, but I’d like to remind those who wish to exclude that it’s JUST A GAME. We’re talking about football here!
I once knew a homeschooler who was allowed to play football for a public school team. He was actually one of the better players, but the rest of the team made his life so miserable that he quit before the season was even over. Coaches should spend their t

Two of the most high profile coaches in the business made headline-grabbing moves today when Gator Golden Boy Billy Donovan quickly spurned Kentucky, which was foaming at the mouth to lure him, to return to Florida, while Bob Huggins made his escape from Manhattan (Kansas that is) and grabbed the freshly minted vacancy at his hometown school, West Virginia. What I find interesting is my gut reactions to both these decisions. The Donovan announcement came earlier in the day, and to be honest, I would have been surprised if he had defected to the Gators' SEC rival. He seems to have a great life going in Gainesville, and his professional success has reached a stratosphere inhabited only by coaches like Krzyzewski and Wooden, as coaches who have led repeat national champions. When I read the news that he was staying, I thought to myself, "What a classy move. Now he has the chance to build a Hall of Fame career at one school, Florida. And he didn't just go for the supposedly more glamorous
Fan Fest: Q&A with Manager Sam Perlozzo, Pitching Coach Leo Mazzone and the Rest of the Staff...I didn't catch of most of this session, thus I only took pics and not notes. Anyhow, manager Sam Perlozzo, pitching coach Leo Mazzone, bench coach Tom Treblehorn, thrd base coach Juan Samuel, hitting coach Terry Crowley, first base coach Sam Mejias and bullpen Coach Dave Trembley chatted about the Orioles and the upcoming season.Everyone on the staff naturally has a great outlook for the year, and I'm hoping it all turns out great.
Just got done attending a session with the coaches. I missed most of it, but Sam Perlozzo belives that Peter Angelos has gotten a bad rap in Baltimore(I believe to an extent, but I beg to differ when it comes to a few things..)What do you think?Plus, all of things, the sun is out. Wonderful.
Since when did we have official blogging coaches?? This is an interesting phenomenon that has spawned only recently. There have been a plethora of “how to” blogging blogs out there for a while, but since when did it turn into legitimate business?
Project Blogger, is a contest that was started by Jonathan Washburn & Jim Cronin that is a essentially a contest between blogging coaches. Each coach will pick a blogging beginner, and coach them into blogger-stardom.
The “potential” list of judges includes:
* Matt Heaton, CEO ActiveRain
* Robert Scoble, famous ex-Microsoft blogger: Scobleizer
* John Battelle, Federated Media - Author of The Search
* Errol Samuelson, new president of Move, Inc.
* Rich Barton or Lloyd Frink, CEO or President of Zillow
* Galen Ward, Shackprices.com
* Matt Mullenweg, Founding Developer of Wordpress
If this can actually be pulled off…it could be huge. It could potentially catapult the “real estate” blogging c
Whether it’s in sports, business, or life, coaches have a vital role in helping you succeed.
I love this quote, and I always tell people this when they asking me about coaching.
Let me say it again, “Professionals have coaches, amateurs do not”
All people at the top of their career or life have had coaches in their life to motivate them to push their own limits and succeed.
How many times did Micheal Jordan win the NBA championship? 6 times. How many championships did Micheal Jordan win without coach Phil Jackson? 0
Everyone talks about what a great player Micheal Jordan was. Did you know he was in the NBA league for 8 years before he won his first NBA championship? It was the second year that Phil Jackson was coach when they won their first of six NBA championships.
Micheal Jordan was a great basketball player before, but he didn’t go down in sports history until his coach Phil Jackson came into his life.

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW A PROFESSIONAL COACH COACHES A TOP PROFESSIONALHank Haney is reputed to be one of the top professional coach and Tiger Woods is undeniably the best professional golfer of this generation. Here is a very brief quote from Hank on Tiger with some elegantly stated learnings. "Tiger (Woods) has arguably the best short game in golf, so when I watch him, I'm learning more from him than he is from me. When Tiger is struggling with a certain shot around the greens, I can tell him what he's doing different from what he normally does. That's really the primary job of a teacher on the PGA Tour. All tour players are talented, but they can't see themselves and they can fall into old tendencies. If I can point out something that looks a bit different than normal, that gives them a better feeling and a little more confidence."And as usual, please feel free to send me your questions, thoughts and comments to Info@DifferWorld.com. 22 QUESTIONS FOR SELF-EXAMINATION FROM THE PHILOSOPHY OF SOCRATES FOR PROFESSIONAL COACHES BY MANOJ SHARMASocrates is easily one of the world's greatest philosophers, yet before that he has to be appreciated as one of the greatest human beings to ever walk this planet. Such is the greatness of the man that the words Wisdom, Truth and Integrity have become intrinsically linked with him, as few have embodied them to the degree he did.Born in 470 BC and passing on in 399BC, his almost 71 years left us not a single personally written word and all of which is accredited to him comes to us via the accounts of those around him.His preference towards a dialectic method of inquiry (following a question with a question) has since been termed The Socratic Method and has become a fundamental tool in any professional coach's arsenal. The following are a series of chronological quotations from Plato's The Apology that are worthy of study to unravel your own truths, be they philosophically or with
Tennessee took part in it’s second practice of the Spring approximately 2-3 years before any other team in the country has even thought about Spring. This, no doubt attributed to the fact that for most of the country, it’s still somewhere around -300 degrees (that’d be Celsius, not Fahrenheit) outside.
The dumb part comes in due to the fact that apparently the practice was “designated as a practice in which full to-the-ground tackling was not allowed.” Now, I’m all about the NCAA rules being a bit iron-fisted, but Tennessee doesn’t seem to realize that the SEC is a favorite of the NCAA as an “example” league in which they are punished for infractions in order to serve as an example for the rest of the country to be wary of. That being said, teams must designate practices as full-pad, tackling, shorts, bikini bottoms only, etc… and said rules must be followed strictly in order to avoid additional penalties.

ruby slippers and phone by gwENvision I do not know if you have noticed, but the world is full of underemployed coaches. Go to almost any networking meeting and you are sure to meet one or two coaches a little too eager to explain how you can be and achieve so much more.I am curious about this. It is partly a result of all the hype. There has been so much hype about coaching. In France the word hardly means anything. If you are not sure what the word for a coach is in French it is le coach (and yes there is also le coaching). It covers everything from personal trainer, to personal shopper, with some potential for psychologist thrown in.I blame the training organisations. For years now training organisations have been telling people ‘Coaching is the fastest growing profession in the world…’ with all kinds of promises of being able to earn hundreds per hour while sitting in slippers at home and asking open questions on the phone. What happens is that people take a training, get hoo
I’m not a huge football fan anymore, but considering it’s Super Bowl Sunday I figure this is at least worth taking a moment to mention.
From the NFL Website:
It wasn’t all that long ago that the NFL’s best jobs were off-limits to blacks. Never mind that three-quarters of the league’s rosters were filled with black players. Or that there were qualified black assistants. When the time came to hire a new coach, they were passed over, time and again.
Meanwhile, white coaches who had done little to distinguish themselves in their previous jobs got additional chances. It was the old boys’ network at its worst.
It’s a moment to celebrate, and as any of these firsts, that come so much later then they should, it’s a moment to grieve. It’s acknowledgment again that for years we’ve kept potential unreached do to oppressive prejudice and discrimination. From Nancy Pelosi to Keith Ellison, and Smith and Dungy we apologize for forcing
Do you have your clients crying with laughter and changing? Would that be right - to be effective and have fun at the same time? You know those moments when a client does something really annoying and you have to bite your tongue to stop yourself doing something unprofessional? Well wouldn't you like to do something much, much more satisfying than firing you patience anchor?I notice a tendency in the helping professions for people to get quite earnest. Helpers are drawn to help because of their compassion, their capacity for empathy - those qualities are vital for good listeners. At the same time they cary with them the capacity for a kind of earnestness and heaviness and, in extreme cases, a martyrdness. At the end of the 1980's I was once asked to leave a seal sanctuary in Scotland where I was working as a volunteer. I watched three football games this weekend: Pitt at UConn, San Diego at Cincy, and the Steelers-Saints game. If I ever saw a frightening display of the state of defense at the two highest levels of football, it was this trifecta. I'll recap in a convenient, three-part series.ACT TWO: SAN DIEGO AT CINCINNATI We move from the college game to the pros, so that means we should see some better defense, right? Right? I used to think San Diego had a strong D, but that must be an urban legend; either that or their entire D stayed home with Shawne Merriman and they let the backups play in this one. The Bengals went to halftime up 28-7 on the Bolts, the capper being a 7 yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Chris "You're Not Puking In My Car Again" Henry with 16 ticks left on the clock in the half. For all intents and purposes, this game should have been over at that point. The Chargers defense went with the odd strategy of not covering Ocho Cinco under any circumstances in this game, an
While watching an otherwise boring afternoon of sports on Saturday with my brother, Ramon Mondesi, the topic of college coaches came up. We had to talk about something other than that stinker of an ACC Championship (with about 100 fans in attendance) we were watching. Ramon noted that for the Big East being such a lowly, second-tier football conference, there seems to be quite a large demand for their coaches. Michigan State just hired Mark Dantonio to replace the face-slapping John L. Smith. Miami desperately wanted Greg Schiano. Alabama is hot to trot for Rich Rodriguez. Bobby Petrino actually told the Oakland Raiders, a quasi-NFL team, "no" last year. Big East haters (which frequent this site) will immediately spring up and say, "You see, it's really not a big conference. If it were, would these coaches even want to leave?"I hear your point. I doubt WVU has the coaching budget of Alabama, and I don't think football is as important a part of Rutgers' culture as it is to Miami. I'
College football has lost a legend today, a 21st century Paul Bunyan, a Patrick Henry that swings open palms instead of pickaxes.John L(unatic) Smith will resign at the end of the 2006 Michigan State football season, according to ESPN.com.School officials say:"The performance on the field has not lived up to what we hoped it would be," athletic director Ron Mason said during the news conference. "It comes time to make a change, and that's where we're at.""Coach Smith deserves to coach the rest of this season because he will coach with his heart, just like he always has," Joel Ferguson, Vice Chairperson of Michigan State's Board of Trustees, told ESPN's Joe Schad. "We have respect for him and we hope he takes us to a bowl game. What we need here is more players. What we need is better recruits. We don't make excuses. What we need is more depth and more players."He will coach with his heart. Just don't ask for the brain to follow.L, I don't know where your next stop along the old

By Mike GibsonMost people think Temple University's football association with the Mid-American Conference is something relatively new.Judging by the first games of the last five Temple University head football coaches, though, opening against MAC schools is the norm, not the exception over a period of 36 years.Only Bruce Arians, who opened his career in Sept. of 1983 with a 17-6 win over Syracuse at Franklin Field, played a first game against a non-MAC foe.Al Golden, the 24th head coach in the history of Temple football, opens against Buffalo in two weeks. Here's a brief look at past first games by Owl coaches, some with quirky milestones:BOBBY WALLACE _ The last name of the first player to score in an Owl game coached by Wallace? I don't see how there is any way that my man Rex "The Sex Cannon" Grossman stays on as the starting QB for the Chicago Bears in 2007. The man took as big a beating from the fans and from the press in 2006 as I have ever seen for a starting QB on a Super Bowl team. Some of it was deserved, but mostly it was just piling on. For some reason, Rex has become a whipping boy in Chicago. And it isn't
The Penguins remind me of Kobe Bryant. You know, those stories about how Kobe let the opponent back in the game in high school, only to cut their throat when the game was on the line.
