For many years, the testing of drugs on children was regarded as unnecessary and unethical, but this resulted in medications being given to children with no testing at all. In 1997, the FDA Modernization Act gave companies six extra months to sell a drug without competition if they studied it in children, and the 2003 Pediatric Research Equity Act authorized the FDA to require companies to test new drugs on children before they are approved for sale. Most Physicians Are Clueless About Obesity
University of Alberta researcher Tim Caulfield believes that most physicians are not prepared to deal with the current and worsening epidemic of obesity. Physicians play a vital role in managing and identifying obesity. And in North America, by law, overweight and obese patients are entitled to the same level of care as the general public. But there are reasons to believe that the population of overweight patients is not, in many cases, receiving optimal care and advice. Studies have shown that 83 percent of doctors are less likely to perform physical examinations on reluctant obese patients, and 17 percent admitted being reluctant to perform pelvic exams on obese patients. Another study found that a full quarter of physicians think that they are not competent or only slightly competent at recommending treatment for obese patients. Steps should be taken, according to Caulfield, to ensure family physicians have the skills, tools and resources necessary to help their patients.Sources:Sci

Still Clueless About a Costume? Masquerade Like a Venetian for Halloween
Capture the Elegance of Venetian Carnevale for Halloween -- Venetian masks come from a long tradition of taunting social mores and titillating the idea of absolved freedom through anonymity, regardless of social class or position. Even ages ago, the festive refashioning during Carnevale di Venezia was elegantly egalitarian. Quite joyfully, it's inspiring to know that a spirit that is so old is now so new again. In the past decade especially, our modern Halloween celebrations have revived a similar egalitarian sentiment, as the trick-or-treating affairs for kiddies have given way to the escapist play-day for adults, when anyone can be whoever or whatever they choose. Of course, being whoever or whatever is a daunting choice, so please choose wisely! If you're completely uninspired for Halloween this year, masquerading in the style of Venetian Carnevale may be your answer. The steady stream of Joe Torre-related articles has shown no sign of abating since the Yankees' early playoff exit, and probably won't until his job status is clarified once and for all. These articles generally stump for Torre's return based solely on past success, or demand Torre's ouster on the basis that it's simply "time for a change." Only a precious few actually take the time and effort to examine Torre's on-the-job performance in an effort to determine his worthiness. The following, written by Joel Sherman of the NY Post just before the Yankees' defeat, is not one of them.Lou Piniella, the man George Steinbrenner wanted last year at this time rather than Joe Torre, just guided his team out of the playoffs, losing three straight games to a Diamondback team that scored fewer runs than it allowed this year.True, but if you think that proves that the Yankees are better off with Torre than Piniella, or anyone else, you're mistaken; it merely serves to illustrate how little i

Or maybe you have some left over from your dinner party. Instead of pouring it out, or sitting up all night drinking the dregs, here is what you can do to protect your opened wine:Use a hand-operated vacuum pump to remove the air. Most pumps come with rubber stoppers that have a one-way valve. You put the rubber stopper where the cork was, place the vacuum pump over it, and pump it a few times to create a vacuum. It helps delay oxidation and extends the life of your opened wine by a few days.A slightly more expensive option, but less labour intensive, is to use inert gas. Most wine stores sell this product in a canister--an extremely light canister that almost feels empty. You 'spray' the oderless, tasteless gas, using a think straw-like nozzle, into t

      A Picture Says a Thousand Words…”Clueless Bud”
There was an article about MLB Commissioner Bud Selig “going to bat” for a new stadium in south Florida to house the Florida Marlins fans (both of them) during home games. If you have followed this saga at all, you’d know there is absolutely no way that shiny new park will ever be realized for the Florida Marlins. I’d believe it is in the future for the Las Vegas Marlins or the Oregon Marlins . . . but never in Florida. Anywho, I couldn’t resist snagging the picture that accompanied the article and posting the larger version here for the world to behold: Seems to me that you could put anything in place of that Marlins logo (say a bottle of steroid pills, and All-Star Game logo, kissing a girl) and that facial expression would still be very apt. Summary: my resentment that soccer takes up 5/7 of our week and forced me to reschedule drum lessons has been replaced by grudging acceptance. The other families seem hip and soccer has more action than baseball, fewer concussions than football, and a point, which I fail to see in basketball). None of the Glamores knows a thing about soccer, except that I am aware of the hotness of the aforementioned David Beckham, which I have witnessed first-hand, and his alleged talent, which I have not. Nevertheless, doctors think Hospital Doctor is the bees and ees of life. If you are apparently featured in it, you are a star. These starry issues are of course doctors being stars in their own profession. It is though a magazine that has an interesting past, present and future. I believe its circulation is almost identical to that of NHS Exposed. Hospital Doctor and I had a little argument some years ago on the minor issue of whistleblowing. No doubt there was a reason why they banned me from the paper.Hospital Doctor though likes doctors who toe the establishment pathway even when they are rebelling. Infact, they also like to back those who lose in court. From my point of view, they hav

      Luxury Clueless?
Wanna have some fun? Sweetie Bernice Ross at Luxury Clues posed a puzzle for her readers. Namely; “What car is this?”     All well and good, except that the image title pops up on mouse over as “Veyron06”. LOL. Google “Veyron” and here’s the Wikipedia Entry on the car. Why not pay her a visit and act like you know what you’re talking about. Be nice of course, just don’t let on. My comment was still in moderation as of 2 minutes ago. She has a cool blog too. Have fun.   Bookmark this article:

      Clueless News Network
This morning, as I was cleaning the kitchen, I overheard Headline News throwing up the old racial chestnut on how maybe what Imus did wasn't quite so bad because black rappers use that sort of salty language for a living.First and foremost, Don Imus getting fired for what he said was the correct response by CBS. He and his cohorts have been chucking dumb statements like this for years, and it's about time he got called for it.And no, I'm not sanguine with a great deal of sexist and racist language in music today. I have a way of dealing with it, though: I don't purchase any music like that. It's called the power of the purse strings.Having said that, I cannot believe that CNN Headline News, of all networks, would try to air this bit of stupidity. I would expect this level of hypocrisy from Fox; those morons are genuinely stupid and honestly think that such a comparison should be taken seriously. But Headline News?Remind me: isn't Headline News the same network that airs this

Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress - Tales of Growing Up Groovy and Clueless by Susan Jane Gilman
In a book about 'growing up ambitious and engaging in some spectacularly imbecilic behavior,' Susan Jane Gilman’s Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress, a follow-up to Kiss My Tiara, takes you from the very start of a wacky life to adulthood. I’ve got my fingers crossed for another book because it has been a long time since I laughed so hard while reading. As Gilman further attests in the 'Author’s Soapbox' of a preface, this collection of names-have-been-changed true stories -- 'or at least, I’ve recounted them as honestly as I can remember them' — serves more than a single purpose:I’ve written this book, in part, because it seems that all of us could use a good laugh these days. Yet I’ve also written it because so many stories women are currently telling are all about getting a man. Or getting over a man. Or about getting laid. Or about not getting laid. Or about not getting laid and not getting a man, but deciding we’re ok with it. While a few stories do involve a b

Gratuity: Read This If You Are One Of The Many Who Are Clueless
I am writing this on behalf of every person that works in the food service industry. Recently I was in a debate with a retired schoolteacher about gratuity. Her opinion was that there should not be any tipping whatsoever. And, having an "oldschool" mentality combined with her views, she tips on average 8-10%. Her arguement was that the establishment should pay employees more money and tipping should be obsolete. Customers should not have to shell out more money on top of the cost of the bill. The words she was speaking and her body language told me that it actually irritated her that she felt obligated to leave a tip at all. Obviously, this woman has never in her life worked in the service industry, and therefore is completely ignorant to why tipping is important. Let me explain from the view of someone that makes a living off of tips....why it is so important, and how it benefits everyone, including the tipper.First let's focus on the establishment. A restaurant is a difficult busine

Debate over crime cameras brings out the clueless in S.F.
Ken Garcia Ken Garcia, The Examiner Read more by Ken Garcia Jan 20, 2007 3:00 AM (9 hrs ago) Current rank: # 13 of 16,293 articles SAN FRANCISCO - At some point in the near future, we may find out if a picture is worth more than a thousand words — maybe something to the tune of three to five years. That's at the core of the debate over the placement of surveillance cameras in high-crime areas of San Francisco, an issue that pits the left versus the very, very left — an ideological divide that in San Francisco is far wider than most people could imagine. And it's a gap that usually splits those who have seen or experienced crime and those who use their politics as a shield against reality. read more

      Cantwell Represents Clueless Voters
In today’s Columbian there’s an article about Maria Cantwell’s re-election to the Senate, with the theory that voters in Washington are sending a message about Iraq, and they’re using her re-election to deliver that message. Huh?  As this article from earlier in the year notes, Cantwell supported the war from the beginning, and continues to not be part of the anti-war get-out-of-Iraq crowd. It’s a shame that the voters of my state are so uneducated that they think voting (D) means voting against Iraq…

      KATU: Clueless
How many of you that live in the thriving, sprawling suburb of Salmon Creek would call the area “rural” or “remote”?  That’s right, I didn’t think you would. Don’t worry, KATU will lie about the area for you.

This just in: Sony Clueless, Again
It seems that Best Buy, GameStop, Circuit City, Amazon and a slew of other retailers missed an essential memo concerning the price of the XBox360 Core System. Did you know that the 360 core bundle, after required purchases, comes to roughly $698? (this courtesy of a Sony Document released earlier today.) No wonder Sony thinks the PS3 is affordable at $499. Obviously this is wrong. If Sony really wanted to get technical they’d point out that PLAYSTATION3 buyers will also need to purchase a fire-extinguisher just for bringing a SIXAXIS, with it’s bundled Sony remote detonator … er rechargeable battery… into their house. One odd thing - they actually get most of the Wii information right. Does this mean that they are more threatened by the XBox360? With all the garbage Sony has been spewing during this console war we might as well start calling it the BS3 and get it over with.

      Clueless
A crescent hairline marking, on her left eyeliddrawes my attention. maybe a tiny uncut nailwas caught in a moment of tiredness. The lid is not entirely closed. Through a sheen of blood, I see her eye but it is rolled into her head: maintaining the mystery of colour.I wonder if she cried? Fot a fine trickle has markedthe corner of the other eye: forming an 'L' shape.I did fret that these trickles and traces might hold clues. But nothing, except her salmi coloured skinspeaks of an obvious cause. And this is a reaction,a marker, the action of being dead two days. And her eeyore rattle weeps by her head.Just as we cry for her. And wonder what we didfor her to stop fighting and leave us clueless.

A Little Help Please posted by Clueless Hubby
Good afternoon, My wife is a sewing crafter. She makes toddler clothes for craft fairs and wants a new iron for Christmas. I have reviewed several online and can't get a straight answer on which one would be the best. If it's hot and takes wrinkles out of clothes, then it's an iron to me. Do you have an opinion? Some say the Rowenta would be best, but I've read they die after about a year or so. I don't know if auto shutoff would be necessary or not, but we do have a 15 month old who stays home with my wife. My budget is around $100. Also, she spends most of her time cutting and ironing her fabric. Is there such a thing as an electric fabric cutter that might help her to speed this process up? If so, could you give me details? As a man who knows NOTHING about sewing or fabric, I greatly appreciate your help. My wife thanks you, but I thank you even more because if I get the wrong one, she'll probably beat me in the head with it. She's 11 weeks pregnant, the hor
