This cloud looks like New Hampshire's Old Man of the Mountain. This landmark has since fallen in 2003, but here's a composite picture of it before and after. All the state road signs have his profile on them as well as the New Hampshire quarter and it's a shame that the younger generation will never get to see him in person. As Quentin mentioned in the photo comment, maybe he has risen and

Steve Thomas of Re/Max thinks so, and mentioned point blank in his latest report that he believes "the market is improving." Here is some of his reasoning:The majority of the upswing in demand is in the lower ranges. Our agents in the trenches are unanimously reporting that there is a large wave of first time home buyer activity. First time home buyers had been priced out of the market and dwindled in numbers during the last couple years of the housing boom. But, prices have finally fallen to a point where they can now afford to purchase and that is precisely what they are doing. We agree the brunt of the current demand seems to be in the "lower ranges" - that is to say, homes $500k and below. Not surprising since these are the homes the majority of residents can afford. As prices decline,

India's stock market has been in a freefall this year, and while the country's long-term growth story is alluring, observers suggest that investing there could be dead money in the shorter term. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensei Index, or Sensex, has tumbled 24 per cent since it peaked at 20,869.78 points in early January. Deep purple and red Sunset looking over the cityLast Sky Watch Friday, just after I put my post up, I went out to listen to a presentation on the Australian Navy. When I was walking in the door I noticed this brilliant sunset lighting up the sky. I happened to have my camera with me, so I was able to snap a few shots. I didn't have a tripod with me and I used about 250mm lens so I had to bring up the ISO a bit to get a clear picture.Purple clouds at sunsetBy the time I got home from the presentation last Friday it was too late to post these shots, so I'm sharing them today as the Sky Watch for the week. This Sky Watch Friday photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera.

While much of the media and the financial crystal ball gazers are predicting the U.S. will go to "Hell in a Handbasket", there are some signs that responsible people in government and business are trying to turn things around. Most market watching spectators are standing around with their fingers up their butt whistling Dixie. "What tune will we be whistling next," they ask?Fortunately, there are U.S. business men and others that are competent at what they do and willing to take calculated risks:Last year, 41 per cent of venture capital invested in Canada – and 53 per cent in Ontario – came from the U.S., making our potential gazelles increasingly dependent on foreign capital.Nice to see General
Taken from my Strangford Lough / Lake page:- This photo was taken with my new Sony A350 Digital SLR in Landscape mode, with a tiny bit of saturation added in Paint Shop Pro.. When adding this photo to my web site - I realized that the fact that my new camera used a 3:2 aspect ratio rather than a 4:3 aspect ratio really threw a spanner in the works.. i.e. all my old photos were 1024x768 pixels in size, with the thumbnails being 120x90, and the smaller blog photos being 400x300. I could obviously no longer keep these sizes without cropping or stretching the images. So after much debate with myself, I decided to make all my new photos on my web sites bigger... 120x90 became 135x90 400x300 became 451x300 1024x768 became 1154x768 Hopefully the new aspec
The doo-wop tradition has as much a right to objectification and reinterpretation as any genre from history; in the contemporary world, why should blaring horn sections and joyous group choruses be the exclusive province of crappy ska bands? Matt Bauder understands, and as lead vocalist, tenor saxophonist, and bandleader ofMore... White Blue Yellow and Clouds, he's doing something about it.
Introducing White Blue Yellow and Clouds opens with "Stars" and "Moonlight," one a jumpy doo-wop and the other a deep and honeyed soul workout, and both point again to the territory that's thankfully been taken back by groups like Bauder's and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings -- they approach timeless music with an understanding of its contours, but the willingness to mess with them, too. Renowned Italian artist Alberto Bertoldi’s original oil paintings are fascinating and beautiful since his subject, the sky and the clouds, is equally fascinating and beautiful. Alberto explains, “I was flying on a plane, and as it broke through the clouds, I experienced a most incredible moment. While I was looking out of the window, the plane seemed to hang between the sea and infinity, between sky and earth. With extreme emotion I watched what humans three thousand years ago could only imagine.”He adds, “When I reached my destination, I dared to watch the horizon again, now from the tiny beach of St Vincente, and I realised for the first time the clouds, mighty, without movement or speed, act like curtains. I witnessed how this curtain of clouds hid the endless universe and its

The city of Chiang Mai is a portal to Thailand's spiritual past and the gateway to some of its most verdant and beautiful forestry. Unlike the tropical island scenery many visitors associate with Thailand, Chiang Mai is ringed by misty mountains and jungle – it is also in close proximity to the apexes of China, Myanmar and Laos, otherwise referred to as the "Golden Triangle".Founded 700 years ago as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom (Lanna means "a million rice fields") Chiang Mai is home to more than 300 temples and a multitude of national parks, mountain trails, waterfalls and ancient ruins. In recent years the town has become increasingly metropolitan, though not quite to the extent of other Thai cities, including the nation's bustling capital, Bangkok. In Chiang Mai, visitors will see
The Sun heats to some extent the water in the oceans, rivers and lakes which evaporates and forms water vapour. The warm water vapour rises and as it rises, it cools down. As a result, the water vapour in the air condenses and it forms the clouds. In turn, these clouds also come to contain [...]
Sun shining through a gap in the strange cloudsSky Watch FridayThis sky actually looked quite bland when seen in real life, but I somehow felt the urge to take a photo of it. Maybe it was the framing with the tops of the houses at the bottom and the tree silhouette, but regardless of the reason I took the photo. This is what it turned out like. By focusing on the sun and adjusting the white balance for it, the clouds are made to look ominous and threatening, when they are far from it in reality! This was shot with a 28mm (equivalent) lens, making it appear slightly "fish-eyed".This Sky Watch Friday photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera.

I adore post-rock but the sudden noisy bits sometimes have an unstabling effect on my senses. I’ll give you an example, Explosions In The Sky’s otherwise shimmering ‘Yasmin The Light’ harbours a shocking bolt of white noise that never fails to have me jumping from the comfort of my armchair. Once expelled the tune resorts to type and chimes ever so prettily like all good EITS’s tunes do. Codes In The Clouds’ ‘Fractures’ (a b-side from their ‘Distant Street Lights’ single of last year) has similar ambitions but thankfully the loud moments won’t necessarily lead to hearing loss and seeing as they are from Kent they probably have more than enough space to let rip. It all starts out so chimingly, chords are tinkled delicately while a hit-hat is gently brushed which to all
