The most fascinating part of the story at both sites is when the owners and operators decided to call it a day, the decision making process around shutting down a company is difficult, and this insight into what they were thinking, things they would have done differently adds much value to anyone thinking of starting a company, and the often difficult decisions that they are going to have to make.
We did a lot of things right in the first 2 years of Judy’s Book business (FYI - July 2004 was the start of the business), but I think we made two reasonably big mistakes. The time spent to soothe emotional wounds really did do its wonders. Attaining closure in various aspects of my life and myself is priceless. It has allowed me to set free all negativity and make room for so much positivity and optimism. The once tainted realities are given clarity. Closure. Clo-sure. It’s a simple word really.
Whenever I hear it I think of that episode of Friends where Rachel is trying to get over Ross (this is before they get together) and she goes out on a date with some poor unsuspecting fool where she gets drunk, calls Ross and leaves him a phone message that says, “I’m over you. And that is what they call, closure.” Of course, she wasn’t really “over” him. She was still very much “under” him.
That episode along with the recent episode of “Exes and Ohs” made me think, do we really ever have “closure?” Is it even attainable?

I have to say that I have a really hard time to accept that I might never get a real closure. Pinellas school administrators have narrowed the list of proposed school closings to five, part of an effort to deal with declining enrollment.
In a proposal sent Tuesday to the School Board, superintendent Clayton Wilcox recommends closing Clearview Avenue, Largo Central and South Ward elementaries, and two St. Petersburg middle schools -- Riviera and Southside Fundamental. The closings would take effect in the 2008-09 school year.
The closing of Southside, one of the district’s oldest and highest performing schools, is part of a significant change in the district's lineup of fundamental programs.
Southside students would be moved to nearby Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle, a four-year-old school with space to grow. Its upper level has never been completed but is now on a list of major improvements to be completed over the next year.

Pinellas schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox today named a number of schools for possible closure, a move prompted by district enrollment declines that are expected to continue for years.
Wilcox named nine elementaries that are among schools that could close at the end of the 2007-08 academic year: Anona, Clearview Avenue, Gulf Beaches, Largo Central, North Ward, Orange Grove, Rio Vista, San Jose and South Ward. Also slated to close is Riviera Middle School.
The School Board last month authorized Wilcox to start choosing schools he would close as part of a push to reorganize the system. At the time, Wilcox said likely candidates would be schools that are older, have low enrollment or lie in flood-prone areas of the county.
Wilcox cautioned board members at an afternoon workshop that the list is preliminary and subject to change. Wilcox, however, did say that principals at most of the schools have been contacted about the possible closures.

Here’s some local news. As a result of the Agate Pass bridge closures this month, Rite Aid, one of two drugstores on BI, is closing an hour early, at 9pm, on those nights for the month of March to allow their employees to get home across the bridge (and the other drugstore is probably closed then, too). So, bridge closes, Rite Aid loses sales, employees lose paycheck (hopefully not insurance bene’s), and islanders hope Safeway has all their evening drug needs (unless they close early TOO). Nice. I hope everyone plans their medical emergencies accordingly.

I was jolted out of my sugar hangover this morning when I read about the Agate Pass bridge closure scheduled for March 4th through the 29th. To repair damage done by a crane on a truck in April 2006, the bridge will be totally closed from 10pm to 4am for most of March.
