Two new Phase III clinical trials of Acomplia — one of them by far the largest yet — are now underway as part of an effort by developer Sanofi-Aventis to assess the potential role of the drug in reducing the risk of heart attacks or strokes in patients with abdominal obesity and other risk factors.
The biggest of the trials named CRESCENDO (Comprehensive Rimonabant Evaluation Study of Cardiovascular ENDpoints and Outcomes), first reported here last May, has now enrolled 17,000 participants at 125 research centers in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.
Douglas Greene, vice president for corporate medical and regulatory affairs at Sanofi, said the trial which formally got underway in December is scheduled to last five years.
