Hugo Rifkind of The Times today defends the use of surveillance by local councils and investigates the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, drawing on the example of a couples plagued by a noisy neighbour. Skipping over the issues of whether local councils should be so empowered, in what circumstances violations of privacy are just (in cases of noise, it seems acceptable to record what ano

Wow. The lib chic claws are out today… it seems as though liberal woman pundits - raving about the historic nature of Hillary’s run - are really not interested in supporting a strong woman after all. Forget all that talk about woman’s suffrage. Forget all that talk about equality. Forget all that talk about [...]
Thursday, June 26, 2008, will go down in history ... not as the day that the Supreme Court found a new right, but the day the Court recognized an ancient and unalienable right. The right to keep and bear arms has been with us since before the founding of this great nation. The dedication and perseverance of millions of American gun owners paid off when five justices agreed that not only does the S
In desperation, Hillary Clinton is now explicitly referring to her appeal to “Hard-Working Americans, White Americans,” adding that she appeals to a wider coalition of voters — including whites who have not supported Barack Obama in recent contests.
“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” she said in an interview with [...]

The “New Republic’s” John Judis minimizes those who minimize Sen. Obama’s gaffe:
There is even a slight chance that Obama’s words in San Francisco could cost him the nomination. Obama is almost certain to have more elected delegates in June than Hillary Clinton, but if he loses Pennsylvania by 15 percentage points (which is not out [...]
Obama's remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser Sunday, they include an attempt to explain the resentment in small-town Pennsylvania that won't be appreciated by some of the people whose votes Obama's seeking: You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrat
Richard Sharpstein, who has represented Sean Taylor in legal matters in the past and is a friend of the family, said moments ago that the player’s life is hanging in the balance in the hospital. Sharpstein, speaking from the hospital, said Taylor is “nonresponsive and unconscious” and the doctors are “worried about a possible brain injury or death.” Sharpstein, who has been with Taylor’s family at the hospital much of the day, said that there are major worries that Taylor may have lost oxygen to the brain, and that no other procedures are planned for right now. “They’re waiting to see if he comes to,” Sharpstein said. He was shot in the groin/thigh area near the femoral artery and lost copious amounts of blood. The intruders then retreated and Sean was airlifted to the trauma center and endured several hours of surgery, Sharpstein said. Reported by Jason La Confora, Washington Post

I’m no botanist, but it does seem like leaves are hanging onto trees longer than usual here in Colorado. I wouldn’t have paid much attention, but Carolyn at Roundtop Ruminations is flipping out about the clinging leaves in Pennsylvania. What does it mean?
A man in Florida hung onto a statue of Hanna Montana for 6 days to win concert tickets to her sold out show.
Jody Powell, 35, hung on to a 3 1/2-metre statue of “Hannah Montana” for the better part of six days to win tickets to a sold-out concert by Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel TV show. The concert is next week in Tampa.
That’s what I call a dedicated fan!! haha
Who knew that putting a bit of salt on your tongue before you guzzled a glass of wine could change many of the wine's innate qualities? And who knew that the reason that you sometimes struggle to get the pit out of a piece of fruit is because those sneaky fruit trees can grow BOTH cling and freestone fruits on the SAME tree? Let me backtrack just a bit. Those are just 2 things I learned at Copia, the food and wine education center in beautiful downtown Napa.Copia is a lovely large airy building filled with kitchens, classrooms, theaters and lots of display space for exhibits on food and wine, as well as a magnificent garden, soon to be expanded by a big new greenhouse, currently under construction. It was founded by Robert Mondavi, among others. They offer an interesting schedule of daily events and classes. I had told H(usband) that a particular day was to be devoted just to Copia, so he kindly went along while I explored every square inch of the place. We started with a half hour gen
