1983 Beirut suicide bombing that left 241 people dead. When one considers the insanity of US foreign policy in which successive White House administrations employ the same failing strategies and tactics in combating terrorism, efforts by former President Jimmy Carter to reach out to Hamas seem rather reasonable and sober-minded. The irony is that critics are quick to label Carter as naive. And that is a mild criticism compared to others bandied about this past week. But perhaps those critics should examine their support of US foreign policy a bit closer. It seems to me that marching in lockstep with counterterrorism policies that have colossally failed over nearly three decades at the cost of countless lives is simply beyond naive in itself and just plain stupid.Since 2001, A Dramatic Incre

They are back! Goldfrapp just announced their 4th studio album. It’s called Seventh Tree and will be out on Febuary 25th of next year. In a letter to their fans they describe it as “gilded in the butterfly colours of an English surrealism shared from Lear to Lennon. It shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool over which Alison’s glistening voice soars.” Yeah, right… What drugs did they take? In an earlier letter they already mentioned that the new songs are going to be very different from their last album Supernature. After so many artists - even the ones that are way more popular then them - copied their style (the last to mention would be Kylie Mini-ogue with her new single 2 Hearts) it is no suprise that they are going in a different direction now. "There should be strict regulations to discourage such attempts by climbers," said Ang Tshering, president of Nepal Mountaineering Association. Other record-setting attempts that sparked controversy included a Dutch man who attempted to scale the peak wearing only shorts. Why are the Nepalese authorities so against these childish attempts at setting records? Is it because they are concerned about the safety of the climbers, perhaps, who might otherwise freeze their tiny little peckers off if no one is there to tell them that they shouldn't do that and slap them on the

Opinion by Jerry Stout. We think we’ve come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it’s all ancient history. Then, before you can blink an eye, suddenly it threatens to start all over again.—Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Drumhead.   It’s the start of a joke right? What do Paris Hilton, Buffy, the internet, and Dua Khalil have in common? For the past few days, my mind has wondered about the punch-line, I have searched for answers in a world where few are readily available, and though it started as a joke, my curiosity enveloped something much deeper and more sinister than a joke ever could. How high will mortgage rates climb?
The average rate on a 30-year fixed loan is anywhere from 6.1% to 6.4% depending on who is counting and how many points (fees) are involved. But everyone tracking the figure says mortgage rates climbed in May. A few people, on this blog and elsewhere, have said the 30-year will keep right on climbing to 8%, while others see it falling amid tepid demand for loans. What do you think? Where do you see the benchmark 30-year rate headed by, say, the middle of 2008? Below 6% Same as now 7% or higher 8% Too scary to think about
