Oil cliffs -- offshore drilling looks even more short sighted
Woe to those who are controlled by short-term thinking. In this case, the woe goes to Americans.Oil drove off a cliff. It's trading at under $70 a barrel. When it zoomed past a Benjamin we, and it sure seemed like the collective we, all joined in a chorus of "drill baby drill."That was silly then. It's worse now. There is real cost to such drilling. Very real costs in terms of challenges to our oceans

Lanyon Quoit, Penwith, Cornwall. charcoal sketch. Vivien BlackburnCharcoal is such a painterly medium to use, so expressive and versatile. I love it. This sketch of Lanyon Quoit, which dates from about 2500 BC was done in a mix of willow charcoal and charcoal pencil.. Cliffs of Moher / (Ireland || Irland)
Hello my faithful visitors! Sorry for the long pause of posting. Unfortunately I have a lot on my plate and very few time for my beloved hobby. Anyway, I am working on some changes to free some time and to post more regularly ... I didn't post a picture of Ireland for ages. Here we go: This one shows the famous Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs are at the west coast of Ireland and very near to Galway (by the way the city we loved most in Ireland!). I think we do have to go to Ireland soon! --------- Weather is changing very rapidly here in Austria. Dirty weather in one minute and sunshine in the other. --------- Promotion of my brother's cookery book (german only): Das perfekte Muttertagsgeschenk: Das Kochbuch von Anton Nolf: "Einfaches. Walking Along the Precipitous Cliffs of Moher
Tuesday, August 25, 1998  I decided to spring for another bus ticket ($15) to get to the Cliffs of Moher. The bus trip went by fairly slow. We got to take a car ferry for 20 minutes too. It turned out that the bus changes drivers (and has a layover of 1 1/2 hours) at the cliffs. This ended up being the perfect amount of time to explore. When I got there, the weather (not the sky) was clear. Then, fog and clouds covered up the cliffs, and then it cleared a half hour later. As I was leaving, the visibility was less than 100 feet. I thought this constant change created an interesting effect. Though I was a little weary, I decided to walk along the edge of the cliffs. It was very exhilarating, and I was proud of myself! It was the first chance on my trip that I got to climb around/up and down rocks. The scene reminded me of Friedrich’s “Monk by the Sea,” a very spiritual painting showing man’s insignificance in relation to the size and power of nature. I took seve

A Hovercraft, The Cliffs of Dover, and “Rent”
Tuesday, August 11, 1998 I woke up and showered. I’m relegated to my long sleeve shirt until I do laundry (at a hostel in London, hopefully). I’m on the TGV to Calais, and should be there in less than two hours. I’m looking forward to the hovercraft ride. I’ll just put on my headphones and rock out to the breeze, and sight of the white Cliffs of Dover. I hope I can stay at the hostel there (Dover) for a night. Otherwise, I’ll have to bum rush London! Though the rest of my trip might be more expensive, everyone will speak English, so I won’t have to worry about weak attempts at foreign communication. I plan on buying one souvenir, and that will be in Ireland. When I got to the shuttle pick-up for the Hover port, no one was there, everyone was apparently taking the ferries (slower and cheaper). I like the fact that the departure information calls the trip a “flight.” From the noise, I can tell I just missed the docking/entrance of the hove

Home Exchange Offer: Castles, White Cliffs but No Theme Parks!
John, a Home Base Holidays member, who recently renewed his home exchange membership, lives in the historic English town of Deal in Kent. He included the following pithy comment within his description of the local area: "This is not a 'touristy' area with Theme Parks." John's description:'We live in the historic town of Deal, which is 40 minutes drive from the cathedral city of Canterbury and two hours from London. Along the seafront you will find two old castles, one built in Tudor times, and only 200 yards from the town centre. The other is the home of the Lord Warden of the cinque ports (Sir Robert Menzies was a former Lord Warden). Parts of Deal are centuries old and have historic houses and buildings of interest. Ten minutes drive away is Dover with its famous castle which overlooks, perhaps, the busiest port in the world. From there you can take a ferry or fast craft to Europe. One can also join the motorways to all parts of England, Scotland and Wales from Dover. Within fiv

      Take Profits on Cleveland Cliffs
CLF is up almost 30% since I recommended it back in April mostly on Cramerspeak and takeover speculation. At these lofty levels most of the takeover move is priced into the stock and it has some risk of going down should it not get bought out. I recommend selling at least a fourth of your position at current prices.-- Faisal LaljeeFull Disclosure: I own CLF but my position can change anytime without notice.

Ireland - The Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, and the Aran Islands
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve selected two previous journal entries from my adventures in Europe. Enjoy! Thursday 8th March - Cliffs
I decided I had to see the Cliffs of Moher - they'd been quite influential in my choice of where to go in Ireland so it'd be silly to come that far and not see them. The weather was a bit better on Thursday and the wind had died down a bit so I decided to try cycling up there again. I didn't get far - my legs felt lethargic and tired and my bum hurt (maybe time for a new saddle) Given that I had a long ride the next day I decided to take it easy, turned round and went back to take the bus instead. When I got on the bus I thought I'd better check that there was one coming back again. Apparently there wasn't. I started to get off the bus again but the driver talked me into going anyway. "What're you going to do otherwise - sit in your room and watch it rain?" he asked. Fair point. "It's only an hour's walk back". In this weather? He assured me that the weather was going to clear up again. There was an American couple on the bus, also staying in Doolin, who were going to walk back,
