It's been a while since my last post. This isn't the first time I've taken a mini-hiatus from my blogging (duties?), but the reason is the same. Whenever I become very busy, this blog is the first thing to go. But I wanted to share something with you all...
Recently, we've begun taking practice MCATs and we are expected to finish one every week according to the syllabus. Like I've said in

If there's one complaint of mine about the Kaplan instruction so far is the lack of emphasis on homework by the instructor. 5 days in, looking back on day 2 (after the diagnostic on day 1), I really wish she spent a good 5 - 10 minutes, taking her time to go through the homework that was expected of us assignment-by-assignment.
It's not that she didn't mention it at all -- she did.
If I could
The kind folks at Affiliate Classroom Live have given me a free ticket for the event August 9th at which I’ll be hosting a round table discussion on digital networking for affiliate managers. I can give it to whomever I choose, so I’m making it arbitrary and holding a contest.

Hardly one can say that schools in developing countries have four significant problems among which are Technology, Funding, Need for Technical support and issues surrounding the Internet but a 2001 BECTA survey on ICT, commissioned by the DfES, asked 1,002 schools in England what the most significant problems were that they faced with ICT systems, the four primary concerns were, Problems with Tech

I don't know if I'll be posting a new entry into this blog after every Kaplan class period. But if I do, when I do, I won't be recounting the entirety of every lecture. If I do, when I do, I'll be reporting to you here about something that is most likely not printed in black & white within the text they provide. Instead, I'll most likely be picking out an idea or thought that popped in my h
Last week, I met with of my high school teachers. It was a happy reunion and after some time, we discussed the kind of students she encounters these days. She told me it’s totally different now with kids bringing their iPods, PSPs, cellphones and other gadgets in school.
The scores from the MCAT diagnostic and Science Assessment are in and I did just as poorly as I thought. To be fair, I scored better than I did on my last practice MCAT, but not by much.
In today's class we went over a lot of subjects and strategies, but there's one thing that stood out that could help me out immediately, Kaplan's test taking strategies for Verbal Reasoning.
Let me take one
qwe3, what an incredible blessing that testimony is of God's power and favor in prayer. As we humble ourselves and say that we are not enough, Jesus comes close to us and grants us help in our lives. Thank you so much for sharing this!
When I was in the 5th grade I went to a private Christian school. Every wednesday we had prayer time, where we would go around the room saying a prayer. I was young back then and just from the top of my head I prayed that my grandpa would be healed from cancer. A few years later I remember all this, and realize my grandpa doesnt have cancer anymore! In between those years I had never thought abou
Yesterday, after a little wandering around, I found the poorly marked building in downtown San Francisco where Kaplan holds one of MCAT prep classroom sessions. Yesterday was my first day and after taking their diagnostic tests, it's embarrassing to know how much more I have to study.
The first day goes something like this:Practice MCAT sections in Physical Science, Verbal Reasoning and

Animal rights extremists are trying to invade classrooms in Washington, D.C. With the passage of the "Animal Protection Amendment Act," they'd be able to go into schools and indoctrinate children with their bizarre notion of “humane education.” The bill would require the D.C. Department of Education provide such instruction. It would also get rid of the phrase "animal owner" in the District of Columbia. No longer would you own a dog or a cat. Now you'd be their "animal...(read more)
Moscow - Brought up amid the Soviet empire's collapse, many 20-something Russians like Anastasia Chukovskaya received an education rich in varied historical viewpoints. Today's youths may not get that opportunity. "In the 1990s, there were different views, different textbooks.… Teachers were eager to tell pupils about [things that were a secret in the past]," says Ivan Bolshakov, leader of the youth wing of the democratic Yabloko party. "Now, they try to accent important events that emphasize Russian statesmanship." Perhaps the most prominent example of that is a high-school history teacher's manual by Alexander Filippov, which calls Stalin the USSR's "most successful" leader and an "effective manager." Students will use an adapted version start

In Baltimore, Reginald F. Lewis High School teacher Jolita Berry (pictured) told a student to sit down after which the student attacked her, repeatedly hitting her while the student's friends cheered her on. In the cell phone camera video, Berry is on the bottom. Other teachers broke up the fight, but when Berry went to the principal about the incident, she was shocked by the response. "On one hand, she told me that she is sorry that this happened to me. But then she turned right around and told me that telling a student that I was going to defend myself was a trigger word. I triggered them." The principal did not report the incident to the police either, and Mayor Sheila Dixon commented on that fact. "I think that principal might need to be disciplined, b

Let’s face it, in America we idolize our athletes. We pay them exorbitant salaries and elevate them to hero-like status. For our youngsters, the attention we lavish on these individuals leads America’s young people to believe that becoming a professional athlete is the surest way to live the American dream.
Often parents, in turn, perpetuate the problem. The notion that an athletic scholarship

Jennifer Medina of the New York Times has a story today about New York City Schools paying students for performing well on standardized tests."I'm not saying I know this is going to fix everything," said Roland G. Fryer, the Harvard economist who designed the student incentive program, "but I am saying it's worth trying. What we need to try to do is start that spark."It makes sense since many of the principals and teachers in these schools also receive bonuses for reaching certain marks.
I was in Js school the other day (his early school days n how he gets mad if I am not on time!), and guess what, the whole school experience came alive in front of my eyes. I did put up my thoughts in the suggestion box but before I could say, I had to find out if there has been a change in classroom furniture ( !!). including chairs that kids spend quite some time sitting on

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A 23-year-old woman shot and killed two other women in a vocational college classroom Friday, then turned the .357 revolver on herself and committed suicide, police said. All three were students at the Louisiana Technical College campus, but the motive was not clear, said Sgt. Don Kelly, a spokesman for the Baton Rouge Police Department. "Why those two women were targeted ... is still an unanswered question," Kelly said. The victims were identified as Karsheika Graves, 21, and Taneshia Butler, 26, both of Baton Rouge. The suspect was Latina Williams, whose address was unknown, Kelly said. About 20 people were in the emergency medical technology class when the shooting occurred, Kelly said. The shooter entered the room briefly, spoke with the instructor and left, he

First comment from this forum :"I am trying to investigate using projectors in our distance learning labs rather than the TV monitors that we currently have. The problem is, when I look at the specs I have no reference point to go by (knowing nothing of projectors). So, if I look at the lumens I don't know what is bright enough for a lighted classroom, etc. I can figure out how large the area projected from a given distance is, and that kind of "room specific" parameter. What I need to know is minimum resolution, brightness, and possibly the more robust brands to look at for a classroom environment. Another angle may be cost of maintenance. We have a $10k HD projector in our student center for "movie night" and other activities, and I just found out they go through about 2 $300 bulbs per year. That times the 13 or so rooms I intend to convert gets a little pricey. BTW, these rooms will prob be going to the Vtel Vista codecs, so compatability with that is a must. Thanks"see this fo
Sometimes you spot the neatest or weirdest things when you're teaching English in Korea. It could be a box cutters for kids, clumped up Pepero sticks, and middle school stress. I've been waiting to post the following videos of the latest fad (maybe it's old school now) that was hitting up my classrooms. What am I talking about? None other than "finger skateboards"!I had so many kids bring these things into class. Just a regular skateboard that could be manipulated by your index and middle finger. If you have not already heard or have watched my video reviews about the Next Internet Millionaire, Joel Comm has come out with a sequel to his reality TV in a form of a product. I would imagine he would be doing this since these are marketers in their prime, teaching a selected few about Internet marketing and how to accomplish their goals to success.
I was anticipating this product and now it is out and the price tag is at an ok price to purchase I was thinking of buying the DVD set. The DVD consists of 12 2 hour sessions, one with each marketer as if you were in the classroom. There are also videos of Joel teaching his Adsense secrets and so much more. I did learn a lot from the small snippets of information on the reality show and some I didn’t even learn anything. Two ASU professors hope to change the perception of one Southeast Asian country by integrating it into their classrooms.Mark Woodward, a religious studies professor, and Peter Suwarno, an international letters and cultures professor, were guest speakers at the Seventh Annual Conference on Islamic Studies in Jakarta, Indonesia, last Wednesday, Nov. 21.The two were among a handful of scholars from the Western world at the conference to discuss the future developments of Islamic studies around the world and the key role Indonesia plays internationally."Students don't even realize how much the country of Indonesia affects them," Woodward said. "From the clothes they wear, to the clove cigarettes they smoke and the Java coffee they drink — the influence is everywhere."But for such a highly religious country with more than 200 million of its people identifying as Muslim, Woodward said Indonesia has played a unique international role.Since around 1998, the country has been an example of ho
One day, a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers. That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much," were most of the comments. No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. The teacher never found out if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. T

I write quite a bit about music and technology at mustech.net. A number of music educators think that “music technology” only pertains to technology that employs MIDI or is directly is related to audio in some way. The truth is that music teachers need to be versed in a variety of computer-related technologies that apply to making music or teaching music in a classroom. Many of the technologies used in music classrooms aren’t “music technology” in the strict sense of the phrase. For example: using a LCD projector isn’t really “music technology” but it can be a catalyst for making your teaching more exciting and effective. Understanding how to use Microsoft EXCEL, or any other spreadsheet software, isn’t “music technology” but it can make the administration part of your job much easier and consequently allow you more time to teach and plan.
Before I use or employ any type of technology, I ask myself the
By: Deon Melchior What are the disservices done to children and parents by the traditional school system?Possibly one of the greatest shortcomings of a school system that does not embrace at least the theory, if not the process, of accelerated education is the system’s subsequent inability to see the child’s years spent at home as some of the most critical and formative of his or her life. We began our day today by doing some ministry in an English classroom at Hannam University - a campus that practically shares a backyard with Daejeon Central Baptist Church. Dad shared his testimony and it was one of the best I've ever heard him share, especially in a small classroom setting like that. I could tell the students were engaged and hanging on every word. Then I shared a bit of my testimony and played a couple of songs for them. It was really funny because as soon as I mentioned I was married, a gasp rose up among the students as if to say, "You're way too young to be married." Then I gave them the kicker. I told them I had two children and their jaws about hit the floor. Then there is the problem of hiding the wires so as not to look obtrusive in a class. When installing software all machines must have the same operating systems and software. Then there are audio-visual enhancements. Renting equipment reduces all these hassles as renting companies set the whole thing up in advance. Take care to check all equipment before the training begins to avoid a classroom disaster. While renting equipment for classroom coaching, it is better to have all the processors at the same speeds and same memories. This makes the entire training process go on smoothly without any lags. There are rental companies that rent locations along with equipment. In these
Kelly from AutismSupportsForYou.com wrote to us about a new "interactive tool that asks parents, caregivers or teachers about a child's specific learning needs and then recommends individualized classroom supports that can be used for students with Autism and other similar learning styles."
I checked out the site (love the graphic) and found it very user-friendly. Parents are asked to complete a survey that asks questions from a parent, caregiver or educator about a child’s particular learning style and needs. Based on that feedback, it generates a report of individual strategies that can be applied immediately.
According to the site: "The Classroom Support Plan provides individualized, hands-on recommendations to parents and teachers about how to help students with Autism and similar needs have the most successful experience at school."
In an email to me, Kelly explains that "the individualized suggestions focus on using what students with Autism are best at to help them ac
By Mary Anne WinslowIt’s undoubtedly true that man has all the qualities that are needed to develop himself from the very moment of birth. Each and every one of us possesses within ourselves a unique psyche. Unlike animals, we do not have hereditary instincts that are passed down through generations, such that a kitten, puppy or a tiger cub behaves similarly to its parents at birth. In contrary, an infant does not inherit styles of behavior from his parents, but develops an individual personality according to his will relating to his surroundings. This makes each child unique, like an uncut gem, different from one another despite coming from the same species.
The main objective of Montessori Method emphasizes on the development of each person as a complete human being from birth to maturity. A child constantly constructs his own understanding of the world through his own innate patterns or plans for development. Dr. Montessori believed these innate patterns, which are hidden are at b
Yup. How does it sound if she shows up in your class in bikini? I don't know; I'm more interested in how it looks. Here are some shots to help us imagine.

Arleen Shearer Mariotti & Susan P. Homan (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers) "Linking Reading Assessment to Instruction—a worktext for individuals who are or intend to be teachers—reflects our cumulative efforts at preparing teachers for the classroom. Over the years we have been teaching reading methods, reading diagnosis, and corrective reading courses, we have found that many of the texts we use with our students provide excellent information on a theoretical level, but few offer adequate practice activities in instructional and assessment techniques appropriate for the elementary classroom. We decided to write this text to make these kinds of application activities widely available. It is intended as a supplement to be used along with the "standard" texts normally used in pre-service or in-service courses. In deciding to produce a fourth edition of this worktext, we were guided by our desire to ensure that we were continuing to meet the demands of elementary teachers.

Well, I thought it would be fun to post a picture of my classroom. The indoor arena is my classroom. This is just one part of one side, but it's one of my favorite areas. I know I love getting a peek into other barns so here is a peek at mine.I am real organized in the barn, I need everything at my fingertips when I am teaching or riding. It needs to be functional. That is why there are longe lines, whips, fly spray, cones, laminated position checkers as I call them all in one area of the arena. I laminate checklists for my students to ride up and check if they are correct with their body position by comparison. It gives me a minute during lessons to rest my voice. I also keep a clipboard with my detailed lesson plans and lined paper to take notes as I teach in the tote on the fence. I also keep chalk, erasers, extra batteries for my microphone, pens, sometimes spurs, and fly spray in there.I salvaged the black board a few years ago from a school that was remodeling, and that

Brock Dubbels, a Ph.D. candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota, is guest blogging on Education Futures about video games in the classroom. Quite an interesting read. There is a general buzz that video games are causes for illiteracy and bad behavior. And I am hoping that I can shed some light on this, because the idea that games are the root of our problems couldn’t be further from my experience teaching reading and writing. In fact, using video games is what helped me to engage and extend the learning of my students in middle school and high school, and to connect my classroom with my students’ lives outside of the classroom.I am sure you can imagine what happened when I told the kids we would be doing a six-week unit on video games. They flipped. You probably would have too.continue reading part 1 (of 3) at http://www.educationfutures.com/2007/07/28/video-games-in-the-classroom/
