Have you ever read a book and thought how great the movie of it would be? This is one of those stories! "Keeping Hannah Waiting" is a beautiful and compelling story by veteran author and child of two Holocaust survivors, Dave Clarke. This is a classic romance wrapped in a mystery and knitted together by art, history, and Holocaust. Kate McBride inherits an attic full of books from her mother. One
It's about time I tackled one of the most famous restaurants in all of New York City. P.J. Clarke's is a very old establishment. Originally constructed in 1864, it has become a staple of the east side. The building sticks out like a sore thumb by sitting in the shadow of the many skyscrapers and merchandising giants surrounding it...

Stanley Clarke - Time Exposure [1984]While still deeply into the R&B/funk thing, Clarke's Time Exposure is a cut or two above its immediate neighbors in quality, thanks mostly to some superior tunesmithing on Clarke's part. The title track is the prize of the set and one of the best funk numbers of Clarke's career, an ingratiating fusion of a riff and a tune that won't quit the memory, set to
MICHAEL Clarke and Andrew Symonds patched up their frosty friendship at a cocktail party - with no cocktails. The split between the once great mates has been the talk of Australian cricket circles, but a ritzy cocktail party at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art helped them iron out their differences. Full utilization is not sustainable. Until you can lower utilization, thereby creating slack, you won't be learning and innovating. You [...]

Am I the only one more than a tad surprised with this snippet of news? Margi Clarke looks set to return to Coronation Street as Tyrone's mum, jailbird Jackie Dobbs.A Coronation Street source told Digital Spy: “Margi’s return is heavily penciled in but she’s not signed her contract yet. We really do hope she does make a comeback as it ties in perfectly with the development of Tyrone and Molly. We also meet Molly’s Auntie Pam at the same time too."Blinkin' eck, Margi Clarke back in Corrie. Who'd have thought it?
The West Lothian Question has been asked again. The Conservatives are thinking like mad, especially those in the Democracy Task Force set up by David Cameron. But I fear they've failed to make good grades. No straight A's coming from Ken Clarke. He's implacably opposed to an English Parliament. "We've got one!", he says, meaning the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. This Victorian pile is the British Parliament, build to glorify the political embodiment of the Empire. It is not an English parliament. So we will get, as The Daily Telegraph reports, a compromise between those who want English votes for English laws and those who would leave things be (undemocratically so, but they wouldn't mind!). Legislation affecting only England, an education Bill, for instance, would receive a second re

Charles Clarke was one of New Labour's beleaguered Home Secretaries. Letting criminals loose by mistake, getting into a muddle over terrorist's human rights and generally bluffing his way out of trouble. He's been a bit quiet of late, but then he's a bit like a volcano. Get a rumble going and he could erupt. Now he's apparently checking out the runners and riders in the stalking horse stakes. According to The Independent, an informative MP says that "Charles has the names". Names of those who would sign up in order to trigger a ballot for a leadership contest. Of course, Clarke denies all this, but then he would, wouldn't he? The MP kindly added that either Mr Clarke or another MP with "nothing to lose" would stand as a way of gauging opinion in the Labour Party. As Jon Snow put it to Brown

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the renowned British science fiction writer and visionary who died here Wednesday, had predicted that cheap and clean fuel might be available in plenty by 2048.
England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke has calmed fears top stars like Kevin Pietersen could be lured to the Indian Premier League. The IPL and the rebel Indian Cricket League have attracted some of the biggest names in world cricket to play in their Twenty20 competitions. The lucrative contracts on offer could be a temptation for England's centrally-contracted players. But Clarke revealed he has an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India which prevents the latter recruiting any such players without the ECB's permission."We have a contract with BBCI," Clarke said on Sky Sports 1."In that contract, they're not allowed to take any English players of any kind to play in IPL if there is no 'No Objection Certificate'."Asked whether Pietersen could walk away from Eng
Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at the age of 90. My first encounter with Clarke did not go well, though I didn’t even know who Clarke was at the time. We watched 2001 at school in 4th or 5th grade, and it bored me to tears. Still does. I may be the only person on earth who actually thinks the movie 2010 is better.A few years later, as I was starting to get deeper into science fiction, I
Even in death Arthur C. Clarke would not compromise his vision. The famed science fiction writer, who once denigrated religion as "a necessary evil in the childhood of our particular species," left written instructions that his funeral be completely secular, according to his aides. Clarke died early Wednesday at age 90 and was to be buried in a private funeral this weekend in his adopted home

March 19 - Arthur C Clarke, the writer best known for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, has died at the age of 90. He passed away in his home in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo because of cardio-respiratory problems, a statement said. He had been wheelchair-bound because of post polio syndrome for the last 20 years of his life.Clarke celebrated his 90th birthday in December, when he said he wanted to be remembered as a writer "who entertained readers and hopefully stretched their imaginations as well".The plot for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which takes readers from the dawn of man to the rebirth of an astronaut as a star child in the future, certainly reflected that goal. His story was turned into an enormously successful 1968 Stanley Kubrick film of the same title and publicised his work to m

The late Sir Arthur C. Clarke was loved by nerds and normals alike for his contributions to literature, film, and technology. Here’s a rundown of the five biggest reasons we’ll miss him.
Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at age 90 in Sri Lanka, leaving explicit instructions that no religious ritual should accompany his funeral.Clarke is often remembered as the inventor of the telecommunications satellite. His most famous science fiction novel, thanks in part to Stanley Kubrick, is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey, though I will always remember him best for Childhood's End, a powerful and intriguing work, made more intriguing by the notice in the front of early editions warning readers that the opinions of the novel are not those of the author.Clarke is well-known for incorporating religious themes into his stories. His use of religion in fiction is most notable for its nuance, sophistication, and originality. In particular, his story "The Star," which depicts a Jesuit scienti

Science fiction writer and a visionary, Sir Arthur C Clarke has passed away at the age of 90 in Sri Lanka.Sir Arthur C. Clarke was a gentleman and a teacher and an avid diver. I had the pleasure of working with him a while ago and learned a lot from him, of all things, about diving!.On the communications front, he envisioned, during the second world war, in a paper he published that, at 22,000 miles above the Earth’s surface, communications satellites would sit in geo-stationary orbit, allowing electronic signals to be bounced off them around the globe and that only three of them needed to cover the globe. His prediction soon came to be true as soon as the first satellite began to orbit the earth. But he was mostly known for his creation, with the legendary film director Stanley Kubrick,

Arthur C Clarke, the science-fiction author, has died at 90.
One of my favourite Sci-Fi authors - I liked his work because he never lost the human dimension. Clarke's books were about fallible human beings learning to adapt to changed circumstances created by logic and his imagination.
For me, that was always deeper than the approach taken by other authors trying to imagine technology developing far enough to become proto-human.
Others will comment on his other achievements - such as the invention of geostationary satellites, and the scope of his contacts and writing.
I'll leave it there. Another writer who was formative for me gone.

Farewell to another hero of mine with the demise of Arthur C. Clarke earlier today.
I have fond memories of Arthur, mainly from the ITV series 'Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World', and of course from the parody done by the Goodies in the episode 'Big Foot'.
Arthur's work was prescient, and he well understood the symbiotic relationship between Science Fiction, and that of Science, Technology, and Innovation:
I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I'm rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books.
As a 'retired' table top RPGer my favourite quote of his, which I heard, I think from Paul Cooke, was:

They are all good wishes I think. I got the video from Robert J. Sawyer. Thanks Mr. Sawyer! On a side note, Dave Itzkoff at the NY Times wrote this article. In it he said that Arthur C. Clarke's novel (formally a serialization) Childhood's End is about "An advanced intelligence arrives from above, creating a utopia by integrating all of humanity into a single mind that thinks and acts as one." This isn't actually 100% true and I think it deserves going on the record what the story is actually about.Childhood's End is ab
At 90, sci-fi guru Clarke yearns for E.T., peaceCOLOMBO (Reuters) - Turning 90 on Sunday, British science fiction writer and visionary Sir Arthur C. Marking his "90th orbit of the sun," the prolific author and theorist who was one of the first to suggest the use of satellites orbiting the earth for communications, would like to be remembered foremost as a writer -- and predicts commercial space travel will one day be commonplace."If I may be allowed just three wishes ... I would like to see some evidence of extraterrestrial life. I've always believed that we're not alone in the universe, but we're still waiting for E.T. to call us or give us some kind of sign," he said in a video posted on Web site www.youtube.com."Secondly, I would like to see us kick our current addiction to oil and adopt clean energy sources," he added. MICHAEL Clarke has firmed in the race to be Australia's next Test skipper after former national coach John Buchanan yesterday urged selectors to fast-track his leadership ambitions. Golden-haired boy Clarke, 26, was anointed as his country's next leader before he had even played a single Test and Buchanan insists he is the clear favourite and the right man to take over when Ricky Ponting retires. But Buchanan feels Clarke must be given a taste of captaincy - either by taking over from Simon Katich as New South Wales skipper or by being given more of a leadership position within the Australia team. "As I look at it, Michael Clarke is the person being groomed for the Australian captaincy," Buchanan said. "What needs to happen is we actually need to see him in that role. That might mean he captains his state side or takes more of a leadership position within the Australian team. "Michael needs to be given roles in terms of captaincy or vice-captaincy in certain (Aust

Embroidery worked on transparent organza stretched over a Frame creates the llusion of stitchery suspended in air—as it embroidered on glass. The shadow cast by the embroidery onto the background completes the illusion. Despite the apparent complexity of the work, the stitching techniques required are

Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential did a quick interview with Mangold in which he discusses growing up as a Bengals fan and how big his guest list will be at Paul Brown stadium for Sunday’s game.
While on the subject of guest lists, Mike Nugent bought 62 tickets for the game for family and friends of his. Nugent’s parents are reportedly pretty serious about tailgating and are looking forward to Sunday.

Got the review copy of Arthur C. Clarke’s (and Stephen Baxter’s) new novel ‘Firstborn’.
The Firstborn were the mysterious builders of the black monolith, in the 2001 film and book, and the accompanying introductory letter with the book states the Firstborn “are seeking to stop the advance of human civilization by employing a technology indistinguishable from magic”. Inneresting.
It goes on to say “Now, the Firstborn are back. This time, they are pulling no punches: They have sent a quantum bomb speeding toward Earth. It is a device that human scientists can barely comprehend, that cannot be stopped or destroyed - and one that will obliterate Earth”.
Entertainment Weekly says “Clarke and Baxter have mastered the art of saving the world in blockbuster style. But will the world survive when it confronts the Firstborn face-to-face?”.

When I mentioned WoW he said he’d never played it but had a couple of friends that have and said ‘they’ve never come out the other side’, and that’s after playing for two years. Jeez, this is gonna be a long trek. And I struggled to get to level 17 for heaven’s sake.
I was playing it the other day and had this quest down a horrific mine. I had been down there twice before and both times got killed within 5 minutes. It seems people are actually nervous about going down there, well I was. Anyway I went down there with loads of other fully tooled up players almost all of who were a much higher level than me and what fun that was. We were battling thru this mine for half an hour and you wouldn’t believe the torrent of weaponry unleashed o
