Ouch, you might say, but Eric has always been more comfortable being behind a guitar rather than the mic, that's why he has expansive guitar solos, ...maybe. Now don't get me wrong, i think he carries his voice very well and would no doubt make me look like a cat on a Friday night hanging out on some fence meowing at a full moon in F flat. The only gripe i have about Mr Clapton is the "Legendary" status bestowed as a guitar player. I wrote on Number 636 (Jeff Beck), the "Top 100 Guitarist of all Time" by Rolling Stone Magazine rank Clapton at #4. I completely disagree with that assessment. King, Jeff Beck Tear Through Six-String Salutes to Friends and Idols“I do this for fun,” Eric Clapton confessed in an interview the day before he hosted and headlined the second Crossroads Guitar Festival, an eleven-hour marathon of solos and joy, on July 28th for 28,000 people at Toyota Park in Chicago. The sold-out event was held to benefit the Crossroads Centre, the drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility Clapton founded on the Caribbean island of Antigua in 1997. (Sales of the two-DVD set filmed at the inaugural Crossroads, a three-day affair in Dallas in 2004, have raised about seven million dollars for the Centre.) But the true theme of the day was Friends and Idols. The heart of Clapton’s hour-and-a-half set was a dynamic reunion with singer-organist-guitarist Steve Winwood. Eric Clapton has always been one of my favorite artists. Although I do prefer his earlier works, there have been some great songs throughout his career. It has been a career sprinkled with heavy drug addiction, alcoholism, some controversy, and many different bands and groups, but it is also full of great music and guitar playing.
I thought it would be appropriate to do some sort of tribute to Eric Clapton today as today is his birthday, so I thought I would put together a list of ten underrated songs spanning his career as well as a little bit about why I like them. Some were singles and are pretty well known, while others might not be (at least be the casual fan). Overall the list doesn’t contain any massive hits (no “Sunshine of Your Love” or “Layla”) but each is one of my favorite songs that Eric Clapton has performed throughout his career.

Blackie sold for $959,500 garnering the record for world's most expensive guitar. Blackie was purchased by the Guitar Center.In 2006, the Guitar Center, with Eric's permission, announced it would issue a limited edition of Blackie replicas in connection with Fender Guitars a part of the master-built Tribute Series.
