I have to tell you that it was nice to be somewhere where people know how to merge into coming traffic so you don't have to either move over, slam on the brakes as they creep in front of you, or speed up to avoid hitting them. I also enjoyed having many options for shopping and food within a few minutes in every direction. I am not sure why every store had clothes that were either black or brown or some combination of colors that included one of those, but at least I could go to twenty stores in a couple of hours to see that trend. I also was enlivened by the cultural diversity. One day while having lunch, within my earshot was a young woman and someone who looked like her grandmother. They looked like they were shopping at u

World's Oldest Gold from Europe's most Ancient Civilization
Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis The Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis which experts qualify as "the world's oldest gold" and a trace of "Europe's most ancient civilization" was a sensational discovery. It is situated about 500m to the north of Lake Varna and about 4 km to the west of the downtown. In 294 graves were discovered more than 3000 golden objects dating back 6000 years. In Hall 6 of Varna Museum of History is exhibited the whole inventory from some of the most significant graves. On both sides of the entrance are represented the graves with masks of human faces shaped out on spot and appliquéd with gold plates. The rich variety of funeral utensils going along with the dead is best illustrated by two of the symbolic graves / No 4 and No 36/. In grave No 4 have been found two unique vessels where the typical for the time decoration of strongly stylized geometrical symbols is fulfilled in golden paint. Read More

      Defending Western Civilization
Important discussion at FrontPage between Jamie Glazov and Robert Spencer prompted by the publication of Spencer’s latest book, Religion of Peace?: Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t. This especially jumped out at me (emphasis added): “There is a logic to why leftist intellectuals support societies that butcher intellectuals, why leftist feminists support societies that mutilate women and why leftist homosexuals and minorities worship societies that barbarize homosexuals and minorities. It’s a death wish based on self-loathing. But perhaps this deeper discussion between us belongs in another forum.” I find myself unable to disagree with that statement from Jamie Glazov. The corruption and self-deprecation that overwhelms the majority of the Left brings with it the mentality of lemmings and sycophants that secretly wish to give everything over to the ‘enlightened barbarians’ simply because they are not Western in origin. Civilization: Amid Old Triumphs, New Threats from Fascism
Bertrand Russell, in hisWisdom of the West, put forward a simple thesis. Western Civilization is essentially Greek civilization. There is no civilization but the Greek in which a philosophic movement goeshand in hand with a scientific tradition. It is this that gives the Greek enterprise its peculiar scope; it is this dual tradition that hasshaped the civilization of the west.--Bertrand Russell, Wisdom of the WestIn support of his thesis, Russell points to the authoritarian, theocratic natures of earlier civilizations --Egypt and Babylonia.Religion, Russell stated, seems inconsistent with the Greek spirit offree inquiry typified most famously by Socrates and the Platonictradition that followed. It is because Greek civilization was primarilysecular, Russell believed, that the spirit of "free inquiry" took rootin the west. This spirit, he believed, was incompatible with bothauthoritarianism and religion itself.A Renaissance of Western Civilization was associated with the pre-eminence of Lo

Civilization IV - Beyond the Sword
As I have stated before, I have been a big Civ fan, but the release of Civilization IV was marred by bugs which really stopped the game from being all it could be. Fast forward 18 months, and this game has now seen extensive patching and two expansion packs. If you had asked me a week ago what my opinion of Civilization 4 and it’s Warlords expansion pack was, I would not have been able to say a bad thing about it. The original game is fantastic, and the expansion only built on it in positive ways. Warlords effectively raised the bar in the Civ4 experience, but didn’t really change enough for me to be bothered making a review. Beyond the Sword, however, has not just raised the bar. It has put the bar on a rocket and launched the damn thing in to orbit. Initial Impressions Let me start by saying that unless you love scenarios, which I don’t, then there is no longer any reason to buy the Warlords expansion pack. Beyond the Sword contains all the other changes - new civ

But until Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion little attention had been paid to the ways in which the writers and collectors of tales used traditional forms and genres in order to shape children's lives -- their behavior, values, and relationship to society. As Jack Zipes convincingly shows, fairy tales have always been a powerful discourse, capable of being used to shape or destabilize attitudes and behavior within culture. Zip Password: T0sT@rN@

Between 3000 and 1600 BC, the Huang He (Yellow River) plain sustained large communities of farmers who raised silkworms and spun silk thread and cloth, which they sent across the camel trails of Central Asia. They had and advanced society, but written records did not appear until the 16th century BC under the Shang dynasty. The Shang ruled over a number

      Lost Civilization Theory - Atlantis
A renewed interested in Atlantis has researchers once again looking to Plato’s writings for clues to this mystery. Dennis Brooks, author of Atlantis Conspiracy will tell you his belief is that Atlantis did not disappear into the sea. Not only did it not sink, but Atlantis Was a Real Place, the Americas.Part of his theory stems from Plato’s writings, and Mr. Brook's belief that you can see the statement about Atlantis sinking was injected into the story in an attempt to explain what happened to Atlantis following a huge flood (tsunami) that struck the shores of Europe and destroyed most of the soldiers in the army of Atlantis while they were at war with Athens. He has a website, that I admit is intriguing and comes up with some excellent theories. I also like that there is a discussion forum available for those of you that like to debate and brainstorm the possibility that Atlantis does, indeed still exist in modern day form and never sunk as was previously thought.Press ReleaseAt

Cockatoos in the Wild -- or Wild in Civilization
I found some more cool pictures on the Tall One's hard drive. These are cockatoos in a place called Middle Harbor, which is a part of Sydney. They fly around as they please, and they like to eat fruit from the trees and look for seeds on the ground. They are wild, but so used to people that the Tall One could get really close to take their picture.

‘The Decline of Western Civilization’ Series
The music documentaries from the 80s by Penelope Spheeris might finally make it to DVD. If you’re an older music geek like me, you are familiar with Penelope Spheeris‘ two documentaries of music scenes in Los Angeles. The first, The Decline of Western Civilization, was filmed in 1980 and featured the LA punk rock scene, which at the time was hardcore, nihilistic, and agressive. Bands in that movie were Fear, The Circle Jerks, X, The Germs, and the pre-Henry Rollins Black Flag. The second movie was The Decline of Western Civilization II - The Metal Years, filmed in the late 80s around the Sunset Strip. It featured great interviews from a lot of metal’s leading lights of the time, and featured performances by Megadeth, Faster Pussycat, and other bands that soon died quiet, ignominious deaths. [Editor’s Note: Metalheads will remember the scene by the pool with a very drunken Chris Holmes, W.A.S.P. guitarist, being interview with his mother.] However, due to righ

Civilization is a Goner - What on earth has happened to the British?
I tend to withhold judgment upon those now being held in captivity by the Tehrorrists in Tehran. Not being in their shoes I cannot imagine what it must be like, whether indeed they are being treated coercively or not; theirs is not a place I would like to be. My argument is more in line with ‘what on earth the British government thinks it is doing by prolonging the time that the 15 in detention must remain so.’ Rather than being a bit more aggressive and this does not mean start shooting, but at the least start jumping up and down and thumping whilst frothing at the mouth. John Derbyshire (archive from New English Review and from NRO) has written in the “New English Review” a piece that would anger some, amuse others and if you will allow make some ponder. I do not believe it is written in defense of something or offense, but it does to use his words hark back to something simpler: “The great genius of the English-speaking peoples was in holding the two sets of id

Samo, Samo: Civilization vs. the Barbarians
Today we have a post by Peace Tree Contributing author Bill Epler. Samo, Samo: Civilization vs. the Barbarians We've been down this road many times before my friends, my "civilized" friends, so we shouldn't be surprised that early 3rd millennia barbarians are raping Mother Nature, babbling about Armageddon, trashing national/international laws, and trying to plunder what's left of the wealth of the planet. Before they wore two horned helmets and animal furs; later they slapped riding crops against black booted Nazi and Stalinist legs. Now they make fools out of religious extremists (that's called shooting fish in a barrel) and engineer the American military into oil wars for corporate billionaires, e.g., Texas energy companies and Cheney/Halliburton. The Fall of Rome has many lessons for us, such as the civilization-killing consequences of boundless greed. Rome too had its greed vampires and they bled the Empire into defenselessness. Have you checked our national defens

UAW Deal To Cause End Of Civilization
The apocalypse is at hand, at least according to the World Socialist Web Site. Apparently, after the United Auto Workers (UAW) ratify their contract with Chrysler, Cerberus "will accelerate their plans to carve up the number three US automaker by shutting down or selling off dozens of factories." Fair enough (or not). The Socialists go on to prognosticate that the "Chrysler deal condemns the next generation of auto workers to near poverty" and "workers will face a campaign of harassment by management, which is eager to replace higher-paid veteran workers with low-paid new hires." And just when you think things couldn't get any worse, "with wages frozen and Cost-of-Living Adjustments diverted, workers will be ravaged by higher housing, food, fuel, education and health-care costs." Then they equate the "economic destitution" this will cause with the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. They didn't predict human sacrifice, dogs and cats
