The American Civil War – Ends in 1865
Many recall the playing of “Dixie,” the standard-bearer of the white South, on the streets of Birmingham, Alabama, during the 1960s; this city is where many of the worst and most violent Civil Rights Movement protests occurred. The South was preoccupied with their deep losses during the Civil War. This preoccupation was not unlike that of Nazi Germany, after Germany’s deep losses during WWI,

The American Civil War – Begins in 1861
This was one of the most brutal, bloody and Godforsaken times ever in America. The Sixties in the South were bad for us, but the Civil War was far worse. Why the South “liked Dixie” and wanted to create another nation within the United States, one below the Mason-Dixon Line, is hard to fathom. People in the South even used to put on Civil War “recreations,” as if it was “fun” somehow,

      Civil War in Lebanon?
My knowledge of Lebanon is extremely limited. But the events unfolding there right now have regional and international significance. The BBC reports that Hezbollah has taken over West Beirut. Gunmen from the Shia militant group Hezbollah have seized most of western Beirut, driving out supporters of the Western-backed government. The gunmen, who also back Hezbollah's Shia opposition allies, have forced the closure of pro-government media. The opposition said it would maintain roadblocks around Beirut until there was a solution to the political crisis. At least 11 people, mainly civilians, have been killed and dozens injured in the city in three days of clashes. The fighting was sparked by a government move on Monday to shut down Hezbollah's telecoms network. The UN Security Council has

This was not the first time a Civil War collector was either killed or injured by an exploding cannonball. White may have been using a drill or grinder attached to the grill to remove grit from the ball. White's wife believes her husband had already disarmed the ball and that it was somehow defective. Wh

A Judge Warns: France Should Prepare for Civil War
The second night of Villiers-le-Bel marks an escalation that the media and the government would probably prefer to hush up, but which may be the start of a new stage: the use of firearms. In truth, the surprise is not that the rioters began to use them, but first, that they hadn't done it sooner [...] and second, that they are still confining themselves to hunting rifles and lead shot. The suburbs however have been armed for a long time with caches of quality war weapons, lethal weapons, against which the bullet-proof vests will be useless. In other words the situation is explosive in both meanings of the word. It seems that from one riot to the next the techniques harden, the methods become more professional and the police and gendarmes will soon have to confront, if they have not already, experts in urban guerilla warfare [...]I am convinced that up until now we have been lucky that the thugs and future murderers in the suburbs have not yet dared to use their fire power. It has been reported that a game that is due for release in Spain tomorrow has caused uproar, with families saying that the title trivialises killings. Shadows of War: The Spanish Civil War, which is a real-time strategy title that allows players to take either side of the 1930s conflict. this game goes on sale on the anniversary of the death of dictator General Franco, who was widely thought of as being responsible for the 500,000 killings that took place during the war. Paco Perez who is the project director at developer Legend Games defended the game by saying that “As well as being entertaining, it could serve to remind people that they need to be conscious of past events to make sure they are not repeated.” The daughter of a man known as Franco’s first victim disagrees and says that “It is not a historical event buried in the past, but is very fresh in the memory of Spaniards. I'm really enjoying Life, probably because I like the Charlie Crews character so much. He has this awesome way about him where he is hyper observant, but not so much to details like Shaun Spencer in Psych, but rather to clues about people and what they are going through. He is intuitive instead of hyper observant. I take back my previous statement that he is hyper observant. That week we learn more about the conspiracy against Charlie. We learn about how Dani's father was the head of S.W.A.T. and she has a real touchy side when it comes to that day.The story in this one was pretty interesting too. I was half paying attention and hadn't realized that the gas station owner had a romantic relationship with Amir. Totally missed that, I thought it was all on the up and up. And I thought that maybe Charlie could settle down a bit and find someone that was a good fit for him. However I think that Charlie shot the woman's son and well some things you just don't get past. Civil war
Last week, the Lebanese people commemorated the 22 anniversary of start of civil war. And each Thursday Marcel Ghanem, Lebanon's most prominent TV presenter, hosts a talk show, "Kalem al Nass" on LBC. So on the eve of that infamous anniversary the show was about the civil war, and Ghanem asked the Lebanese a crucial question "will you be willing to take up arms again and fight your fellow Lebanese…"Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 male callers professed their willingness, even their eagerness to fight. I was not surprised… You could feel this "esprit de guerre" or war logic in the streets, in conversations, in any social gathering, even between educated people.Lebanese politicians are famous for their changing allegiance and overnight alliances, yet the current rhetoric of exclusion and accusations have deeply affected the population at large. I fear that the gaping chasm which divides our society will need years and years to heal, if the situation does not deteriorate.Fina

Perhaps We can Still AvoidThe Third Civil WarBy David Truskoff10 March, 2007Countercurrents.orgMarch 7th 1965 is the day the Selma civil rights marchers were beaten trying to march for freedom. On March 9th we re-grouped and started the historic Selma to Montgomery Freedom March. Presidential candidates are planning to attend this year’s anniversary celebration. They will again embarrass most of us who made that March with their hypocritical promises of a better America for all races. When I wrote the book THE SECOND CIVIL WAR it was with a great deal of emotion and yes, some tears. I think that it is important that on this day liberals at least read the introduction to the book.INTRODUCTIONThe first time that I met LeRoy Jerome Moton was in March of 1965, one hundred years after the first battle of Selma. The final issue of "Civil War," which was originally scheduled for November and then January, now won't appear until February. Probably. In the meantime, there's plenty of "Civil War" to go around, including "Civil War: The Return" (probably of Thor) No. 1, "Black Panther" No. 24 (where T'Challa joins Captain America's guerrillas), "Blade" No. 5 (featuring Wolverine) and "Punisher War Journal" No. 3 (Punny vs. Cap). Not to mention "Ultimate Civil War Spider-Ham Crisis (featuring Wolver-Ham)" (all titles $2.99), in which Marvel parodies its own story with anthropomorphic animals subbing for the usual heroes. So let's see, the finale to this utterly worthless crossover has been delayed (they seem to refrain from be

FNC: Civil War in Iraq "Positive," Proves U.S. "Winning"
Like I have said before, FOX News can find the silver lining in anything. In February, FNC was pushing the “civil war = good” meme. (Same show, no less!) Apparently old habits die hard. Guest host Stuart Varney on Your World with Neil Cavuto (via Think Progress): STUART VARNEY: Well, let me put out something positive about Iraq, if I may for a second. Look, we took the fight to the enemy. We divided the enemy. The enemy is now fighting itself. America's interest is surely being well-preserved and well-protected. We are in a fact, in a way, winning and preserving our interests. [emphasis added] The suggestion that the enemy is solely “fighting itself” is ridiculous. December surpassed October as the bloodiest month of the war this year with the U.S. death toll at 106 dead with two days left. Furthermore, the war cheerleaders pushed this idea that Iraq would be a model for the rest of the Middle East. Moderates in Iran would be empowered to topple the fundamenta

In the Gaza Strip and West Bank, a full-scale factional war will erupt among the Palestinian Arabs, with unpredictable consequences. This time around, the "brotherhood" is over. Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other assorted mafias will participate, while outside sponsors such as Iran, Syria, and Jordan will supply the bullets, rockets, money, and ill-will.That's one more reason why sanctions must be declared against them, and Fatah, just like Hamas, must be outlawed.

What would you say to counter this perception?Really, is that so? And who might those "online cynics" be or include? The blogosphere, for example?
