The arm techniques are many in martial arts. From the western boxing syllabus there are four basic punches (jab, cross, hook uppercut), and these have many variations. Then from the oriental martial arts there are many strikes that can incorporate the elbow, fist, palm of the hand, knife and ridge hand, fingers, or forearm. From all of these techniques mentioned, from whatever fighting system in the world, they all have something in common. They are executed through a straight, or through a circular motion.
To some, straight strikes are seen as the preferred method. Whether snapping or thrusting, they are thrown in a straight line, are easier to perform and can be thrown much faster than circular strikes when in combination. The jab, one of the main techniques used in western boxing is seen as the most vital weapon. Although not very powerful, it can irritate an opponent and is excellent for setting up other strikes.

We woke up on our second day in Sydney, and it was gloomy and rainy. We decided to brave weather head on, and went for a morning jog in Hyde Park. It was a nice park as far as parks go. No magical elves handing out cheeseburgers and cupcakes or anything like that. But it did have a nice Anzac memorial, and it seemed to be in the center of a lot of hustle and bustle, and I loved it. GBF and I had one of those intense conversations last night, the sort we haven't had in a long time. We did the second leg of the Crewe and Nantwich Circular Walk this morning. Another early start, four hours working our way through fields, across railway tracks, farm land and even a golf course! This section of the three-part circular walk is described as a "Walking the Wildside" and it is. By now, most of us are familiar with the benefits of compact flourescent bulbs; CFLs use at least two-thirds less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. However, in the stampede to convert to a more efficient light sources, one feature of CFLs was overlooked - small amounts of mercury in each bulb. You may have heard that mercury ain't too good for you. In fact, Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, and it's especially dangerous for children and fetuses. Combine this with the fact that the bulbs are likely to break en route to a landfill and it becomes clear that there is a significant environmental risk with conventional disposal.CFLs can be recycled but, unfortunately, not a lot of instructure is in place to do so. Even cities that have curbside recycling won't take the bulbs. This 'toon shows our me, Toady, seated in front of a big seagull who is at his desk with some stacks of paper in front of him. It seems that Toady had given him a project which the bird can't find. Toady knows the guy threw it away because he uses the "circular file" method.This is based on stark bureau-crazy reality. The bird is a VP and one of the better ones I ever associated with. People used to get so frustrated because they would track things to him but he would not have them and not recall them. What we figured out is that he put everything in one of three stacks on his desk. Each day the stacks moved to the left and the oldest went straight into the garbage. If no one came by to follow-up on a given piece of paper it simply disappeared. Anything routed for a series of signitures was particularly vulnerable.
