Indian Premier League: Circa 2011 and beyond
I didn’t see CNN’s ‘Talk Asia’ programme which featured IPL ring master Lalit Modi this weekend. For that matter, I haven’t seen any of the episodes, even if that makes me lesser a human. And to be honest, I don’t see myself seeing any of the ‘Talk Asia’ episodes either, of course unless I figure there. But as a professional hazard, I read the transcript and found that during

Donut hole sulphides are hard to make because the glass must be folded completely over the figure. Thus, because of the folding, it's also quite rare to find them without air bubbles.

Jabo Machine Made Metallic circa 2000
I recently purchased this contemporary, machine made, black glass "beer" marble, and perhaps with it an urban legend. :) As the story goes, while working late one night, machine operators "found" a six pack of beer, which they consumed, and later disposed of the cans by melting them in a vat of molten glass. I don't know if the story's true, but there is undeniably a metallic quality about the marble, which I'll treasure for years to come.Getting back to the realm of confirmed fact, what I can tell you with certainty is that high quality, collectible, machine made marbles are still being produced by companies like Jabo, Inc., which in the early 1990s purchased long-time marble maker Vitro Agate Corp. Circa Combat Website Sucks
I have seen some bad websites in my day, but none more worse than the trash design that comes along with the skateboarding world. For whatever reasons, skateboarding companies don't feel that they need to invest time and money into promoting their companies with a good, solid website.Sure there are stand outs, but for every good one, there's like 10 of them. Here's an example of horrible, horrible site design.c1rcacombatdivision.com is the one of the worst skate related websites I've seen in a long time.Check these screen shots:The design is done in all flash, but the mystery meat navigation, and the horrible loading times, don't allow for a mid level connections, so you'd better be on t1 or higher.Circa needs to land a contract with Muska again, otherwise, they're doing horrible things.

New Blog Entry From Circa Survive's Brendan
Some days they say the most profound things. the magazines. the websites. the critics. Of course some of them are artists and that’s why they speak. They have things to say. But some just need a dollar. And some just walk the wrong path, pen in hand, never quite realizing that they’ve missed their call, whatever it was, by a longshot. We can’t be too angry at ignorance or hurt by it for that matter. A fools words only fly so far. It’s another year for us all, a new album for Circa and in some ways a new life. I’m almost thirty years old now and I’ve lived and died a hundred times in those days. But here, in this one, things are different than ever before. Our hearts are the same, still beating with purpose and dripping questions; sending blood running through our bodies for answers, to our feet our knees and our fingers. Our answers come and go. We feel secure and alive and in the next moment insecure. But we move along, balancing as always, and pressing

An earlier case of sexism, circa 1980
Okay, now that I've completed my smackdown of that mainstream reporter's double-talk, I'm going to provide some criteria on something that he by contrast didn't: a case of sexism that took place in The Brave and the Bold #166 in late 1980, written by Michael Fleisher of Jonah Hex and Warlord fame. For that, here's the letter column from issue #171, February 1981:Sorry if the page I scanned is a bit blurry, but it's difficult for me to get the inner side of the page pressed down well under the cover and get it to go flat along the glass, and I have a policy not fold things over, because that's taking a risk in damaging the goods. But, not to worry, I'm going to copy the second letter featured right onto the good ol' HTML:Dear Paul [Levitz],The latest issue of BRAVE AND BOLD starring Batman and Black Canary was easily the most offensive story published by DC in recent years. That a writer could submit such a sexist story in this day and age is perhaps explainable, but that an ed

Circa Survive - On Letting Go
Even after a few listens to the new album from Philadelphia's Circa Survive, I wasn't really sure what I was going to write here. The album is called On Letting Go and it is full of agile and atmospheric rock music that straddles the line between accessible and something a little more post-hardcore.Perhaps because the album is out on Equal Vision Records and because Circa Survive's vocalist Anthony Green was previously in Saosin, I think I was expecting something a little more hardcore. What I found was atmospheric nu-emo that falls into the same category as what Sparta and countless other bands are doing. On Letting Go simply sounds like a document of a band that is still searching for their identity. There is nothing terrible about any of the songs on the record, but aside from a few tracks, nothing really stands out. Imagine stripping away a majority of the experimental bits from the first Mars Volta album or all the catchy melodies from a Coheed album and you'd be left wit

Top 10 Travel Tips (circa 1999)
I first shared my Top 10 Travel Tips on the World Wide Web in 1999 after having spent the prior Summer in Europe. Some of the advice I had read beforehand (thanks Rough Guides First-Time Europe), and the rest was based on my experience (in some cases having not done what I’m suggesting below). Nine years later, I still aim to remember these concepts while traveling… 1. Positive Attitude - No matter what happens on your trip, it is your story to tell. Don’t let bad incidents ruin your whole experience. Don’t let others bring you down. You worked hard to get to this point, and you deserve to enjoy it. 2. Patience - You will not make every train, bus, ferry, and airplane. Instead of getting angry, take the time to explore your surroundings, get a cup of European coffee. You will have to wait, but at least you are waiting in some exotic country! 3. Pack Light - Make sure your pack can fit on the plane as carry on luggage. If it is too big, take things out. Neve

Given the unsettling amount of animal husbandry required on a daily basis, it appears there was little hope of the average wife emerging from growing piles of fecal matter to become a Domestic Minx. Not so this jammy tart. She has good reason to smirk. She's just landed the toffiest geezer in the village and has opened the door to a new life with servants and handmaidens. No chickens and swine and milking of kine. No baking and brewing withal and no wretched piles of animal faeces to spoil her day. There's just that spot of Good Husbandry to attend to... Meet the Domestic Minx, circa 1525. The Good Wife When thou art up and ready Then first sweep the house. Dress up they dishboard and se

War-Making Powers of the Congress (circa "93, "07)
The vast majority of Americans are opposed to President Bush’s adoption of the “McCain Doctrine,” which will increase U.S. force levels in Iraq by 21,500. War critics point out that Congress should use the power of the purse to stop the escalation of U.S. involvement. Glenn Greenwald pointed out that Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) is holding a committee hearing “in order to demonstrate that Congress has the Constitutional authority to compel the President to withdraw troops from Iraq, a power that is not merely confined to cutting off appropriations.” But Greenwald has more goods on the issue: Back in September, when Chris Wallace falsely accused Bill Clinton of emboldening the Terrorists by prematurely cutting-and-running from Somalia (a favorite right-wing meme), it was documented here (as Clinton himself pointed out to Wallace) that it was actually Republican Senators who forced Clinton to withdraw troops by imposing troop withdrawal deadlines on h

Classic Dixie Dregs pic - circa 1977
This was posted on the Steve Morse Mailinglist Yahoo Group, and I just had to put it up here. This photo of the Dixie Dregs was taken in 1977 in front of Peaches Records in Memphis. This originally appeared in Billboard magazine. From left to right: Allen Sloan - violin, Steve Morse - guitar, Rod Morgenstein - drums, Andy West - bass, and (probably) Mark Parrish - keys.

      People @ Work-Photo #9-Chicago Circa 1966-67
The concept for this photo series is that my photos are the opposite of the generic pictures posted on most business sites. The images of models pretending to be doing something important. My photos are of real people, doing real work and they have real a connection to me. Here's a photo of my dad, Matthew Krugel, at work at his 1st store, Bel-Mar Drugs, on the south-east corner of Diversey and Laramie in Chicago's Craigin Park neighborhood; 5200 W. Diversey. He had just owned this store for a few years when this picture was taken. The store was there until about 1978 when he moved it kitty-corner into a building about 3-times in size. He was a fixture in the neighborhood for about 35 years. The two customers with him are his aunt and uncle (my great-aunt and great-uncle) Sam and Sophie Davis from Los Angeles, CA. Uncle Sam was a bohemian or beatnik of sorts who, back in the 40's and 50's, took my dad and his cousins on cross country road trips. Often tim

      People @ Work-Photo #8-Chicago Circa 1990
After a brief hiatus of my People At Work series of photos, I return with a photo of my dad, Matthew Krugel, at work at his store Bel-Mar Pharmacy. This photo was taken around 1990. This was about 4 years before he closed the business. Bel-Mar and my dad were in the Belmont-Cragin area of Chicago for about 35 years (beginning 1964). Bel-Mar was first on the south east corner of the intersection of Diversey and Laramie. Then around 1977, my dad bought the store across the street (5200 W. Diversey), and was there until 1994. He was the pharmacist, owner and a fixture in the neighborhood until he sold the business to F&M (a smaller version of Wal-Mart; now out of business). To see an enlarged view, just click on the photo.

      People @ Work-Photo #7-Chicago Circa 1932-36
All of the people at work photos continue to be real people at work and have been of my relatives in Chicago. Although I'm open to posting other photos of real people at work, my relatives hit closest to home for me (literally and figuratively). This photo continues that theme. This is a photo of my great grandmother, Minnie Levinson, at her and her husband Abraham Levinson's grocery store on Damen and Pierce Avenues in the Wicker Park neighborhood, where they lived. Their store was under the L tracks (short for elevated trains) on Milwaukee Avenue, about a half block north of the actual Wicker Park. This was their second store as their first store which had closed around 1925 was located at approximately Oakley and Potomac which is just south-west of the store in the photo (Oakley 2200 west and Potomac about 1250 north). The other lady in the photo is the owner of a candy store which was across the street. Although I don't know the name of the woman, the candy store was named I

My intention with all of my posted photos is to depict real people at work. Instead of showing models posing and pretending, I''m showing people who actually have a connection to me while they're at work. In these 2 photos, the pharmacist in the white coat is my dad, Matthew Krugel. The person to my dad's left is unknown. These photos were probably taken sometime between 1959 and 1960. They were taken at the same store in Chicago, probably Steinways on Wilson Avenue on the northwest side of the city, where my dad was raised. This was where he worked just after passing the pharmacy boards and before he went into business for himself, thus becoming as much a businessperson as a pharmacist. A couple of interesting points about the content of the photos and my dad. In the top photo, if you click to enlarge, you'll notice that my dad is in front of, and may even be holding a display for a product called Vigran. I have no idea what Vigran is for. I mention only because it shows

Again, real people doing real work. These photos are of my grandparents, Louis and Betty Wishnick at their grocery store at 3638 W. Wrightwood in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood around 1953/54. My grandfather was from Mlawa, Poland, and my grandmother was from Russia, near Minsk. Both met in Chicago. To view larger images of the photos, just click on them. Interesting labor history note concerning my grandfather and family. My grandfather's business wasn't unionized. But, had it been unionized it probably would have been part of the Retail Clerks' Union, an affiliate of the United Food and Commercial Workers' Union (UFCW). You may recall from my previous posts concerning the recent split of the AFL-CIO that the UFCW is part of the Change to Win Coalition. The Coalition broke up the nation's largest labor federation, the AFL-CIO. However, here's a real irony concerning labor history and my family. My grandfather's brother, my great uncle, Morrie Wishnick, was presi

Here's a photo of 2 men at work circa 1950 taken in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. The man on the left is my grandfather Louis (Louie) Wishnick. The man on his right is an Oscar Mayer promotional person. The photo was taken at my grandfather's grocery store at 3638 W. Wrightwood. This was 1 of 3 stores he owned from approximately 1932 until 1962, when he retired. Each store was your basic neighborhood grocery. Twice a week by 4 A.M. he'd be at the South Water Market to pick up fresh produce. Generally, he and other relatives worked the stores.

      People @ Work-Photo #1-Maxwell Street, Chicago Circa 1903-1909
A pet peeve of mine are the generic photos of people at work that a lot of brochures, pamphlets and websites use. You know the ones, they show a generic looking group of people, well groomed, conservatively dressed, ready to conquer the world. Or, you just see photos of hand shaking, cell phone talking, people in a meeting, etc. My website will have photos of real people at work. My first photo is a distinguished looking gentleman circa 1903-09 standing in front of his butcher shop in the west Loop area of Downtown Chicago. Who is this man? Why did I include this picture? The man is my great-great grandfather Meyer Levinson. This is his butcher shop on Maxwell Street in Chicago. We (my family) believe that this photo was taken somtime between 1903 and 1909, before Maxwell Street became a world renown shopping destination in Chicago. We think that Meyer's shop was at 326 Maxwell, as the address at the top of the left hand window pane indicates, and was between Sangamon an

The Story Continues... Hawaii Circa 2000
Once I got to Hawaii, I was immeadiately happy. That place is so beautiful. Not to mention, 6000 miles away from the stalker. I had decided that because I was alone, I should stay at a youth hostel. That way I could meet lots of people. My plan worked. The first day in Waikiki, I went to breakfast and met a couple of dudes from Seattle and a girl from Quebec Canada, and they invited me on

Tuesday Triple Play -- Back to the New Past, circa 1987
Dinosaur Jr.'s new single, "Almost Ready," takes me back. Not quite all the way back to 1987 and the band's seminal You're Living All Over Me from that year because, frankly, I didn't buy into Dinosaur Jr. at the time. But it feels right at home in...
