Jabo Machine Made Metallic circa 2000
I recently purchased this contemporary, machine made, black glass "beer" marble, and perhaps with it an urban legend. :) As the story goes, while working late one night, machine operators "found" a six pack of beer, which they consumed, and later disposed of the cans by melting them in a vat of molten glass. I don't know if the story's true, but there is undeniably a metallic quality about the marble, which I'll treasure for years to come.Getting back to the realm of confirmed fact, what I can tell you with certainty is that high quality, collectible, machine made marbles are still being produced by companies like Jabo, Inc., which in the early 1990s purchased long-time marble maker Vitro Agate Corp. New Blog Entry From Circa Survive's Brendan
Some days they say the most profound things. the magazines. the websites. the critics. Of course some of them are artists and that’s why they speak. They have things to say. But some just need a dollar. And some just walk the wrong path, pen in hand, never quite realizing that they’ve missed their call, whatever it was, by a longshot. We can’t be too angry at ignorance or hurt by it for that matter. A fools words only fly so far. It’s another year for us all, a new album for Circa and in some ways a new life. I’m almost thirty years old now and I’ve lived and died a hundred times in those days. But here, in this one, things are different than ever before. Our hearts are the same, still beating with purpose and dripping questions; sending blood running through our bodies for answers, to our feet our knees and our fingers. Our answers come and go. We feel secure and alive and in the next moment insecure. But we move along, balancing as always, and pressing

An earlier case of sexism, circa 1980
Okay, now that I've completed my smackdown of that mainstream reporter's double-talk, I'm going to provide some criteria on something that he by contrast didn't: a case of sexism that took place in The Brave and the Bold #166 in late 1980, written by Michael Fleisher of Jonah Hex and Warlord fame. For that, here's the letter column from issue #171, February 1981:Sorry if the page I scanned is a bit blurry, but it's difficult for me to get the inner side of the page pressed down well under the cover and get it to go flat along the glass, and I have a policy not fold things over, because that's taking a risk in damaging the goods. But, not to worry, I'm going to copy the second letter featured right onto the good ol' HTML:Dear Paul [Levitz],The latest issue of BRAVE AND BOLD starring Batman and Black Canary was easily the most offensive story published by DC in recent years. That a writer could submit such a sexist story in this day and age is perhaps explainable, but that an ed

      Circa Lighting
Generally I leave it to OhJoy! or Decor8 to the interiors but today I found this magnificent light fixture from Circa Lighting. It is called "Armillary Sphere Chandelier". So interesting and different from most of what you see. I almost can't imagine a space that this wouldn't go in to. I also think it is inspirational....makes me want to do an old world piece of art with globes, time pieces, arrows...... Enjoy.

      Hi, I’m a Mac…and I’m a PC - Circa 1996
So here is the predecessor (no joke) to Apple’s current ad campaign. If these two guys walked up to you now, who would you hang with? I am almost embarrassed about what was considered “cool” in the mid-90’s. While Mr. Mac’s Canadian tuxedo is quite a look, I am just glad digital camera’s didn’t exist back in my one strap down overall shorts days…. Currently Taking Inspiration From: Madonna (circa 1984), Jane Birkin, Audrey Hepburn, and the Beauty of Flowers and Simple Ceramics.
Jane Birkin, with the worlds most adorable bulldog that I have been coveting for years, oh yeah and her famous namesake bag. Love the hair, love the comfortable laid back way, love the attitude.Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. That hair!!! By the way, take note of the bangs trend featured in the next few pictures.Madonna in her Desperately Seeking Susan phase (circa 1984). Love the use of yellow and navy, layers and charms. Who can forget that wonderful scene in DSS when 'Susan' changes tops and the jangle of all her necklaces clinking together. Remember to bring meaning and the texture of life into your everyday! Audrey Hepburn carrying her staple Louis Vuitton Speedy. Polished and perfect as always!Wonderful bouquet courtesy of Paris Parfait (a wonderful delightful blog). Take a glance at her antiques feature if you have a moment, she has the most beautiful collection, very inspiring!!

Top 10 Travel Tips (circa 1999)
I first shared my Top 10 Travel Tips on the World Wide Web in 1999 after having spent the prior Summer in Europe. Some of the advice I had read beforehand (thanks Rough Guides First-Time Europe), and the rest was based on my experience (in some cases having not done what I’m suggesting below). Nine years later, I still aim to remember these concepts while traveling… 1. Positive Attitude - No matter what happens on your trip, it is your story to tell. Don’t let bad incidents ruin your whole experience. Don’t let others bring you down. You worked hard to get to this point, and you deserve to enjoy it. 2. Patience - You will not make every train, bus, ferry, and airplane. Instead of getting angry, take the time to explore your surroundings, get a cup of European coffee. You will have to wait, but at least you are waiting in some exotic country! 3. Pack Light - Make sure your pack can fit on the plane as carry on luggage. If it is too big, take things out. Neve

Travel Dispatch from Vietnam (circa 2001)
I was sitting in my work cubicle, three years into my my first post-college job, when one of my good friends sent me the email below. I can remember my blood boiling with envy and jealousy as I read it. I don’t have a record of my response, however I’m sure it was something to the effect of “just you wait, I’ll get my chance to travel and then I’ll be the one sending you such messages!” —– Original Message —- From: A Friend To: Dave Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 11:39:30 AM Subject: Vietnam….. hey mr wannabe world traveler! whats up? At the moment, I’m held up in an Internet cafe in the middle of Vietnam waiting out a f*cking monsoon storm. Hopefully it will pass in the next 20 minutes but you never know! Anyway, I have been traveling and thinking about how much you would LOVE S.E. Asia! Everything that backpacking in Europe USED to be, still exists here in S.E. Asia. domestic minx circa 1525
The Domestic Minx will lament no more her domestic tribulations. They are frivolous at best when compared to those of my ancestral minxes, whose daily list of obligations were conveniently outlined for all Good Wives to read (assuming they could) in the Good Wife Guide of 1525. Given the unsettling amount of animal husbandry required on a daily basis, it appears there was little hope of the average wife emerging from growing piles of fecal matter to become a Domestic Minx. Not so this jammy tart. She has good reason to smirk. She's just landed the toffiest geezer in the village and has opened the door to a new life with servants and handmaidens. No chickens and swine and milking of kine. No baking and brewing withal and no wretched piles of animal faeces to spoil her day. There's just that spot of Good Husbandry to attend to... Meet the Domestic Minx, circa 1525. The Good Wife When thou art up and ready Then first sweep the house. Dress up they dishboard and se

War-Making Powers of the Congress (circa "93, "07)
The vast majority of Americans are opposed to President Bush’s adoption of the “McCain Doctrine,” which will increase U.S. force levels in Iraq by 21,500. War critics point out that Congress should use the power of the purse to stop the escalation of U.S. involvement. Glenn Greenwald pointed out that Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) is holding a committee hearing “in order to demonstrate that Congress has the Constitutional authority to compel the President to withdraw troops from Iraq, a power that is not merely confined to cutting off appropriations.” But Greenwald has more goods on the issue: Back in September, when Chris Wallace falsely accused Bill Clinton of emboldening the Terrorists by prematurely cutting-and-running from Somalia (a favorite right-wing meme), it was documented here (as Clinton himself pointed out to Wallace) that it was actually Republican Senators who forced Clinton to withdraw troops by imposing troop withdrawal deadlines on h

Classic Dixie Dregs pic - circa 1977
This was posted on the Steve Morse Mailinglist Yahoo Group, and I just had to put it up here. This photo of the Dixie Dregs was taken in 1977 in front of Peaches Records in Memphis. This originally appeared in Billboard magazine. From left to right: Allen Sloan - violin, Steve Morse - guitar, Rod Morgenstein - drums, Andy West - bass, and (probably) Mark Parrish - keys.

      People @ Work-Photo #9-Chicago Circa 1966-67
The concept for this photo series is that my photos are the opposite of the generic pictures posted on most business sites. The images of models pretending to be doing something important. My photos are of real people, doing real work and they have real a connection to me. Here's a photo of my dad, Matthew Krugel, at work at his 1st store, Bel-Mar Drugs, on the south-east corner of Diversey and Laramie in Chicago's Craigin Park neighborhood; 5200 W. Diversey. He had just owned this store for a few years when this picture was taken. The store was there until about 1978 when he moved it kitty-corner into a building about 3-times in size. He was a fixture in the neighborhood for about 35 years. The two customers with him are his aunt and uncle (my great-aunt and great-uncle) Sam and Sophie Davis from Los Angeles, CA. Uncle Sam was a bohemian or beatnik of sorts who, back in the 40's and 50's, took my dad and his cousins on cross country road trips. Often tim
