A great show this evening that I want to remind you of is taking place over in Newport at the historic Southgate House. Two great Tennessee bands will be taking the stage tonight, The Features and Hotpipes. Hotpipes are releasing a brand new album today as well, Future Bolt, [...]
Here is a show that has gotten little to no pub around town that I can find that should be loads of fun. The debut album from the 1990’s is one of my favorite debuts from 2007, and the Scottish boys making such an early trip to our area is a rare and exciting treat.
I fear that this will be grossly under attended so do your best to try and come out Sunday night at the Southgate House to support a great new band and give them a reason to consider playing in our fair city again down the road.
The band just played last night at CMJ with British Sea Power and Pela.
Check out this song and video for a sample of 1990’s….

Just in case you forgot, The Fiery Furnaces and all their glory will be taking the stage tonight at the Southgate House in Newport. Their new album, Widow City, also hits stores today from Thrill Jockey records and may very well be their best yet.
I have not seen the Friedebergers since last summer for their set at Desdemona, which was a face melter, to be certain. I’m of course hoping for more of the same this evening. Enjoy this song from the new album and be sure to come on our tonight!

Just in case you did not already know about this great show tonight, Silversun Pickups Sea Wolf are hitting up the Southgate House tonight. Silversun have been and touring their album, Carnavas for over a year now and they are beginning to pick up even more steam. The band is now getting some really big crossover attention from just about everywhere and they are not to be missed live. I have seen them twice since Carnavas was released and it was
Sea Wolf on the other hand, are not quite at that level but are a worthy opener for SSPU. These guys have wowed many this year as well, including me, with their debut EP, Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low. And now the band are getting prepped to release their debut full length on September 25th titled, Leaves in the River.

A great show tonight here in town, be sure to get yourself over to Decibel Lounge, or Alchemize, not sure what the hell they are calling it anymore tonight for two excellent bands. Ra Ra Riot are out in support of their debut EP, which is self titled, that was released earlier this month. In addition, RRR will be in the Lounge this afternoon on WOXY.com, tune in at about 4pm for the session.
And you also get Mason Proper, who are still out touring There Is A Moth In Your Chest, another great record. This is seriously an excellent couple of bands playing together in a smallish room in town tonight, do not miss it.
And oh yeah, don’t forget the afterparty with my man Shiv handling the DJ duties till very late…..

A great show that is worth your attention if you are in the Cincinnati area this weekend. Three bands we really like all happen to be sharing a bill on Saturday night up in Northside @ Decibel Lounge (formerly Alchemize).
You already know we dig J Roddy Walston & The Business, but also very worthy of you attention is Hotpipes, who happen to be natives to the Cincy area, now stationed in Nashville, and local favorites The Turnbull AC’s.
So, what is stopping you? Oh, you don’t live in Cincinnati? Well, J Roddy & Hotpipes are also playing the night before down in Louisville along with another band to keep an eye on called Dangerbird.
So, either hit up Uncle Pleasants in Louisville tomorrow night, or Decibel Lounge on Saturday for a great night of live music.
Another sign of the goodness of a show like Saturday nights, all three bands have recorded sessions in the WOXY.com lounge…..here is proof.

Don’t forget Cincy folks, tonight at The Southgate House in Newport, singer songwriter Daniel Johnston will be performing. This will be my first time catching Daniel live so I’m excited to take in a set from him. Daniel has written so many great songs that have been covered by so many artists that have a deep respect for his music. This was probably best represented on the 2004 double disc, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered.
The album featured a disc of Daniel’s music and another disc of all cover songs. Among those that contributed cover songs were Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, M. Ward, Beck and The Flaming Lips.
So head on over to the Southgate House tonight for what should be a great night of music. Also performing is local singer songwriter Matthew Shelton, I am looking forward to his set as well.

photo from Arthur’s last time through Cincinnati
Cincinnati welcomes back Joseph Arthur tonight to the 20th Century Theatre in Oakley. Joseph played a wild set last time through town that included a encore that was over an hour long. I wouldn’t expect a repeat of that tonight, but if the new album is any indication, with over 80 minutes of music, it could happen.
The new album, Let’s Just Be is in stores now on Arthur’s own Lonely Astronaut Records.

Head on over to Newport tonight to hear the mad whistler and multi instrumentalist, Andrew Bird at The Southgate House. Bird is touring in support of his new album, Armchair Apocrypha, and also recently dropped by the Letterman set for an appearance. Check out the video below of Bird performing “Plasticities.” Thanks to Culture Bully for the heads up on this video.

Brooklyn’s Arizona will not only be playing in Cincinnati tonight, but will also be performing in the WOXY.com lounge this afternoon. The band is supporting their album, “Welcome Back Dear Children” and you can tune in at 3pm EST today for the studio session. Tune in to see if I can make it through my first lounge act interview…
Also, head over to Dirty Jack’s tonight for the show. I gave a more official write up for Arizona back here, and it also includes some downloads. I’ll repost a track here though as well for you to preview.

Don’t forget folks, a great free show tonight at The Comet in the Northside area of Cincinnati. Both bands are touring brand new albums, The Sheds, with their 4th release, “You’ve Got A Light.” And J Roddy & The Business with their debut album, “Hail Mega Boys.” Both albums are self released, do it yourself gems, so I know it would mean alot to both bands if you came out and supported them by purchasing a CD. Here is a song from each of the albums for you to preview.
For some previous mentions of The Sheds on ENS, check here.

So, the SXSW week is over, and I know I have way more energy now than those that attended the festival and had an amazing time. I hope everyone enjoyed audio coverage from Mike, I thought it was fun. I’m starting off this Monday morning with a reminder that Ratatat is at the Southgate House tonight, it’s really a show you should make a point to be at. The most recent album from them, Classics, is an absolute gem. So, be sure to head down to Newport tonight if you are in the area and take in what should be a great show.
It’s a 10$ show if you buy in advance on the SG website, and it’s 12$ at the door. The show should go off around 10pm.
