DETROIT — The Nissan Motor Company said Monday that it would make a new small car designed by a rival Chrysler and that Chrysler would make a full-size pickup truck designed by Nissan. Both products will be sold in North America, and the new Chrysler small car will also be sold in Europe and other global markets starting in 2010. The new Chrysler small car will be made at Nissan’s Oppama plant in Japan. Chrysler will make the pickup truck at its plant in Saltillo, Mexico, and it will go on sale in 2011, the companies said. Chrysler has announced it is recalling of approximately 181,000 Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger models built for the 2007-2008 model year, citing defective electrical connectors as the problem.The faulty connectors are located in the vehicles' tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and, if unused by the system, will corrode and short out, preventing vehicles from running properly. Various electrical problems may arise as a result of the faulty TPMS connectors such as stalling engines, dead batteries, and failing cruise controls. Dealers have been instructed to fix the TPMS system by sealing the circuits of the unused connectors. Chrysler informed the National Traffic Safety Administration of the recall this week and says that no accidents have been reported as a result of the failings.
