In fact, it was more than just a normal journey.Remember when I said that I went to Manado and Sangihe with my uncle to trace our ancestry and a bit of soul-searching on my part? Well, we’ve achieved both objectives to the fullest extent. My soul-searching had reaped much more benefits for me than I had expected, bringing me the kind of spiritual bliss I couldn’t have found anywhere else. At 30, her father was queer, her mother looked wretched, her friend sought justice, he loved his new bride, his family was counting money... Had Columbus landed at Ellis Island on a summer day he would have Found the braves of the Manhattan Indians fishing from its Shores, with their squaws and papooses around the tepees and camp fires in the background. And only the Chief of the Manhattans and his favored braves would have been there, for in those days, and for years to follow, it was a retreat of the privileged. In the days of Peter Stuyvesant, and through the tenure of the second Dutch Governor, Wouter van Twiller, Ellis Island, then called Oyster Island, was a gay and exclusive resort. At this time, early in the seventeenth century, rollicking young Dutch boys with gleaming shoe buckles, blue pantaloons and bright doublets, took their buxom and tightly-laced Dutch sweethearts to Oyster Island in small boats. There all drank

I must say that there is one columnist in this world, that I am aware of, that writes exactly what I am thinking. His name is Mark Morford and he is at the San Francisco Chronicle. While at the Chronicle's online venue, SF Gate, check out his other columns. They are fun reads! Here goes:...does all this excitement over Hillary and Barack mean the nation is finally ready for a female president? A black president? Have we, at long last, come so far that a guy like John Edwards, an excellent, likable, all-around candidate and a classic populist southern Democrat, actually finishes third? The answer, I'm afraid, is no, we are not ready. Not

After being broken by criminal defense blogger I Was The State, the story about the Austin Police Department and the city’s municipally-owned utility mining electric use data in an attempt to determine who may or may not be growing marijuana in their home, the Austin Chronicle has broken the story wide open.
We urge you to read the entire story, but, of course, we find some of the email exchanges the Chronicle uncovered the most interesting aspects of the whole sad saga:
The Chronicle has obtained e-mails between Coffey and Haynes, along with several lists of AE customer data that Haynes apparently used to fish for potential pot-growing operations. In combination with court documents related to Colby’s case, the records paint a disturbing picture of how APD has been conducting at least some of its marijuana investigations – and how the information was used, at least in Colby’s case, to develop probable cause for a search. The documents also reflect an APD officer

During her interview with Louis Villarrubia, Mary Richardson quoted from Fr. Feeney's publication The Point:Mary Richardson: "'Jews, as an organized force, are the implacable declared enemies of Christianity: Its tenets, its traditions, its moral code, its very culture.' Do you believe that?"To which Louis Villarrubia responded, "As I said, our interest in the Jews is the same as our interest in Methodists, Presbyterians, um Hindus, Muslims...to bring them to the true faith. That is our interest."Mary Richardson pressed on: "But if Fr. Feeney is your hero, do you repudiate what he said here? Did he say this at a different time? Was this wrong? And Mr. Villarrubia replied, "I think you're getting the idea that what we really hold is that somehow.. um.. Jews as Jews are bad people."Notice how Mr. Villarrubia evades answering Mary Richardson's rather specific question? Instead of providing her with an honest response as to whether or not he repudiates Fr. Feeney's anti-Semitic articl

This week's Crewe Chronicle carries plenty of opinion about the proposed carve-up of Cheshire. Some is editorial, but a few readers have made their thoughts clear. I covered it on Crewe blog last Tuesday but there were no comments posted. It's a hefty topic, so you'd expect more Crewe folk to pitch in... wouldn't you? If the plans for two unitary councils go ahead then Crewe will get lumped together with Sandbach, Middlewich, Macclesfield and Wilmslow, all part of East Cheshire. One interesting possibility is that the government's long-term aim is to remove Cheshire from the political map completely. Surely that's taking things a tad far but D. Hutton suggested that we could, eventually, be swallowed up by Greater Manchester! Fascinating. So today, if you don't usually post comments, please drop a short message into the pot so we can gauge the overall opinion of Crewe blog readers... The other hot topic is the town centre redevelopment. Not for the first time there are suggestio
A reader alerted me to today's Kane County Chronicle for Dan Campana's goodbye column to Babs. He does his own recap leading to the conclusion ...good riddance. But Campana declares his page an Erwin-free zone. Is this premature?Maybe not. Maybe the folks in St Charles are so fatigued by the whole mess that they are content to let residual issues go unaddressed and quit looking for the missing file. So what if she tried to get even more sick days than her cronies were willing to take heat for? The effort failed; let it go.But what if there are a few "law and order" or "good government" folks running around St Charles? Maybe some average taxpayers? Maybe some education advocates who saw Erwin's effort as taking money away from the children? What if the system IS working, only it's behind the scenes? If the file is found, or more news breaks, isn't the Chronicle going to cover it?Of course they are. The Chronicle gets my vote for best on-going coverage of the whole affair. The Daily He

I missed this yesterday. It's from the Kane County Chronicle. The St. Charles school board should ratify embattled Superintendent Barbara Erwin’s contract extension because the board has operated for two years under the assumption that it is legal. Not ratifying the extension could open a Pandora’s box of legal questions and create an even bigger mess than exists now....We still are curious about how not a single school board member noticed that the contract apparently never had been voted on in public.Comments from school board member Karla Ray intensify our questions. Ray told a reporter Wednesday that the recording of the closed-door session reflects a “blatant intent to not be open with the public on what they’re paying their superintendent.”The public needs to know what was said in that closed meeting. Barsanti this week should receive meeting minutes, closed-session recordings, and other information about the contract extension. Barsanti has offered no timeline on his i
San Francisco Chronicle: Women make gains in French politics - Female candidate seen having chance in presidential raceExcerpt:"Corinne Lepage still remembers how French lawmakers humiliated her a decade ago, ridiculing draft environmental legislation she introduced."It would never have happened if I were a man," Lepage said of the recurrent slights she says she endured when she was environment minister -- and one of a handful of female Cabinet ministers then appointed for arguably decorative purposes. It's better now for female politicians, thanks to French and European directives to level the gender playing field. And while feminists contend political parity remains a distant dream in France, one of the half-dozen female candidates running in Sunday's first-round presidential election has a shot at advancing to the next round. The two finalists will face off on May 6."http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2007/04/20/MNGDOPC9901.DTL&type=politicsAlex

I thought I'd feature a few of the not-so pretty bits of Crewe this week. I know, you all thought that it was the perfect, picture-postcard town, right? Well, the reality is that plenty of businesses regularly close or move and the old premises become neglected. Take High Street, once home to clubs and bars, a cinema, two newspaper offices and more. The pub/clubs have changed names many times over the years but still survive. There's even a pole dancing, or should we say "gentlemen's" club called Manhattan's if you're into that kinda thing. Pool and snooker survives at Rileys, but the cinema is all-but finished since the phoenix Leisure Park opened. The Crewe Chronicle newspaper office has moved to Victoria Street (part of the Queensway block that will also be bulldozed soon), and the car dealership at the bottom has been levelled. Several other small businesses have also shut up shop. So what future this area of town? I reckon not much will change until other town centre developm

This topic cropped up last week. I joined one of those email debates where a number of us chipped in. The general consensus was that the local rag isn't particularly good value these days. At 65p it's not over-priced, but the content isn't what it used to be. Moreover, the number of adverts seems to have increased. One of our mailers had a reply from the paper itself, and they justified its content, layout and price. You'd expect that. Personally, I still enjoy it as you can find plenty of detail if you scour all of the pages. The problem is print deadline. The Crewe edition seems to take a back seat compared to the other papers in the Trinity Mirror Printing stable. As a result we no longer get footy coverage from Tuesday nights. In fact, this has even changed my reading habit. As a bloke, it's law that you start at the back and trawl through the sports pages first. But with no up-to-date Alex stuff the incentive is gone. After clocking Ford's expanded recall for faulty cruise control systems (that could lead to vehicle fires), Florida's St. Petersburg Times asked local firefighters if they'd seen any evidence of Ford F-150s going up in smoke. Indeed they have. Pasco County fire investigator Don Campbell says he started noticing the problem about two years ago. "It's a staggering number now," Campbell said. "It probably averages about one a week in Pasco County." Hillsborough County fire investigator Dave Tucker also said he'd seem a rising number of incidents in recent months: "This has been a long-standing problem." Tucker described fires that burned a hole through the F-150's hood "the size of a basketball." While not exactly a scientific survey, if this pattern is repeated nationwide and receives more of the same sort of local coverage, Ford is facing another Explorer rollover-style PR debacle. Meanwhile, if you could call you local fire de
