Cole and I made some book thongs for relatives too far away to see over the holidays-aunts, cousins, and a long distance Grandma. They take minutes to make and and look really pretty. Materials: Glass beads - assorted colors and sizes Seed beads - either to match or contrast your glass beads Waxed beading cotton Clear nail varnish or beading cement 1. Take a length of waxed cotton that is around 6 inches longer than the length of the average book. 2. Tie a knot in one end and pull it tight so that it forms a small, tight knot. 3. Thread a seed bead onto the cotton and push it down so that it partly covers the knot. 4. Thread several glass beads in colors of your choice onto the thread. As a follow up to my earlier post of TOP CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR 2006 I have decided to put together a listing of what I believe, will be among the Top 10 Christmas Gifts or Presents for 2006 when looking back on this season. Individuality will hopefully define the choices made with specific reference to likes/dislikes of the person being gifted. That said, here are my selections, again in no particular order, for everyone in 2006. A question for readers who have big families: do you buy Christmas presents for everyone, and if so, how generous are you? I ask because my family used to be tiny so I bought a generous present for everyone. Total budget: $200ish. Then I got married and gained all of Mr Bargain Queen’s huge extended family: two parents, two brothers, stepmother, three step-siblings, grandmother, aunt and a bunch of adorable step-nieces and -nephews. Then I was reunited with my father and gained five brothers, a stepmother and many adorable nieces and nephews of my own. I now have ten times as many family members and I have no idea what to do. Should I buy everyone a present? Should I only buy the kids presents? Is it OK to buy little joke presents instead of big generous ones? It’s snowing in Hawaii! Well, okay . . . not really. Every year, on the first weekend in December, we go to see a local holiday production called The Christmas Gift of Aloha. It’s Girlie Girl’s favorite and she makes me play the soundtrack over and over again. This year they had fake snow falling during the performance. It’s the closest we’ll get to the real thing! It was pretty cool, though. We were covered in it! Here is a short (1 minute) video of one of the songs called Magic of Aloha. This year I decided to plan ahead and bought tickets for her to ride on a train that’s in a parade following the show. They go on sale early in the morning about a month in advance. Boy, the things we do for our kids. It was totally worth it, though. Three years ago I tried to realign my kids' view of Christmas from receiving to giving by encouraging them to make gifts. After they made a list of recipients I helped them come up with ideas and gave them five dollars for supplies. It was successful enough to have become tradition. Here are some of our favorites:13. Covers and cases. Almost everyone has collections, toys or gadgets that they use regularly that can benefit from a case or cover. The kids have sewn felt squares together to make a cases for digital cameras, laptops, Lillian's Fashion Pollys, or the boys' laser tags equipment. I think Martha copied her idea here from me. It's a good thing for them to make because 1. it gets them thinking about the other person's likes/hobbies and 2. sewing is a good skill to practice.12. Flower pots.
