The Van Gogh hostel is about 15-20 minutes from the city center, but I took my time walking there. Lots of people were out and about, shopping for last minute gifts as they do in the United States. I ducked into a glitzy mall for warmth and exploration. Of course everything [...]
We spent Christmas Eve day and night with my Aunt Carol. We were both lucky to have the day off. I had planned on taking the kids to a children's museum, but they were all closed:( Instead we took my Aunt to experience Chuck E Cheeses for the first time. It wasn't busy so she really didn't get the full effect. It was a lot of fun though! Wesley is still soooo scared of Chuckster. He rarely comes o
I can remember it as if it were yesterday. It was Christmas Eve, 1968 and I was an eleven year old boy – yes, I am 51 – and I was captivated by the Apollo 8 team, whose dangerous and courageous mission was to orbit the moon in what was really a tin can in space. I can remember the daily reports about the mission, which usually coincided around dinner time in Scotland. That evening, there was a
We found this little guy out in the cold wind. My hands were frozen to my camera, the wind chill was 10 degrees below zero, but it was worth it to see this guy and get his photo today. Hope you enjoy seeing him!Donna Ridgway
Not much to write about today. Feeling a little lonely but that's the way it usually is and will be tomorrow, as well. But then, such is the life of the old recluse. I've little news today but wanted to write something to pass a little time. I watched that "Religulous" documentary last night and it was fairly good. I wished he'd have been a little more confrontational than he was but he

Ah, the bliss. It's Christmas Eve, and all through the house not a creature is stirring; not even Harry and his stuffed mouse. Well, actually Harry doesn't have a stuffed mouse. He has a bunch of toys, such as a stuffed grouse, a pheasant (which was recently eviscerated and now I have to sew it up again), his orange orangutan, and a couple other toys that don't interest him as much. But as you al

The New York Times recently had an interesting article on the importance of salted cod to Portuguese Christmas dinners:“Bacalhau, as the fish is called here, is to Christmas Eve in Portugal what turkey is to Thanksgiving in America. Treasured since the 16th century, when Portuguese fishermen first brought it back from, it bore the nickname fiel amigo — faithful friend. Its correct preparati
Throughout my childhood, PBS ran 1978's Christmas Eve on Sesame Street ad nauseam throughout the month of December - and I was determined to catch every single airing. Alas, PBS has retired this special, in favor of some crappy one featuring The Monster That Ruined Sesame Street Elmo. I've been holding out hope for several years that they'll pull this out of the vault, but no such luck. Thank God

It was Christmas Eve yesterday, and I was busy writing when I heard a frantic knock at my door. I looked out the window and saw my neighbor, Rachael. She was hysterical and incoherent, but I figured out a strange man had just appeared in her front room, sat in her easy chair and refused to leave. Rachael lives alone and she's in her late seventies, but she was demanding that this man leave

Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock.
"Now they are all on their knees,"
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease.
We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,

We've run through the gamut of weather conditions and seasonal change! You name it, we've had it in the past couple weeks. As I always say, "That's Ohio!"Today I start the cooking/baking binge aka Christmas ... :) That is my part of it today and tomorrow... for everyone else it is opening presents and eating. The garden has no more snow cover, and after Christmas is tucked away safely for another year and celebration I will likely try to go out and mulch. The window between Christmas and New Year's Day is when I usually do that.I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday and family. I'll be blogging more as the long winter takes over... it is almost as much fun as looking over the plant catalogs! See you... and until then:Technorati Tags: , Blogroll Me!
This is what a Canadian West Coast Christmas looks like. The paper said the other day that if we're hoping for a white Christmas, well we've only had 5 of those in the last 52 years....so pffft, there goes my idea of making snow angels and chucking snow balls at unsuspecting passersby.....darn !!!!! ;o) but there is a eenie weenie chance of a bit of snow on Boxing day.. I'll take what I can get
…and the spirit of love and togetherness is upon us. Our 4 month old is too young to have a clue what’s going on, which means we’ll probably enjoy his first Christmas more than hew will. Unfortunately, my older two children live with their mother 1300 miles away so I won’t get to see them [...]

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!
The bad news is that I'm stuck at work today until 1:00. Blah. The good news is that we are a mere 9 1/2 hours away from the "A Christmas Story" Marathon.
Unless some news breaks (like Hendry jumping into the mix for Santana and (gulp) actually landing him(crosses fingers)), the editorial staff here at LOHO is going to take the next day and a half or so off. Feel free to use this thread for reports of good tidings, lumps of coal, christmas-themed cocktails and anything interesting a fat guy who broke into your house might have stuffed into your socks. For my part, I shall be returning home shortly to try to cram making a gingerbread house, cookies, and watching "Love, Actually," and "It's a Wonderful Life" in before Randy and Ralphy get my undivided attention this evening (have I ever mentioned that our kids look EXACTLY like Ralphy and Randy? Cause they do).
We at LOHO wish all of you a happy, healthy and very merry Christmas!

It’s Christmas Eve, are you excited? If you’re traveling this year be safe. There is lots of snow and ice across the midwest and some power outages. We lost power for a few hours on Saturday, but things here seem to be back to normal.
Is anyone hoping Santa will brings some homeschool supplies this year? Though with some families almost anything can bcome a homeschool supply. Do you have any wonderful traditions this time of year. I read the most beautiful post this weekend on one family’s winter traditions. Making lanterns, taking a walk in the dark, a bonefire, and of course lots of reading. It sounded amazing.
If you’ve got family members home right now that usually aren’t Homeschool Savvy has a great post up on involving other family members in the homeschooling. If your husband took some vacation time right now and is driving you nuts this might be a good post for you to read. Especially if you’re feeling the urge to beat him with some mistleto
The final batch of mincepies are in the oven, the last of the presents were wrapped last night, and the iced run sauce is in the freezer ready for tomorrow. I am finally done! Just the making of Christmas dinner and getting through a Christmas Day that includes both my brother and Grandparents to go.I wasn't going to smoke today. That lasted until about lunchtime and now I've had six. Ho hum. Must do better. My theory had been that if I didn't buy cigarettes today then I wouldn't be able to tomorrow so that would have been two days without and on the start of quitting. Maybe it will have to be the New Year thing after all.Having had to flit back over to Sainsbury's for more mincemeat for the final batch, the large jar I bought not being quite sufficient, I treated myself to a white chocolate mocha as well. That was three trips to Sainsbury's today. Hopefully I won't need anything more for a while.I didn't go up to Dudley last night in the end. Didn't sleep well the n

Today is my Mom's birthday.Over the years she's probably felt a little cheated as she has gotten numerous combination gifts and had to spend most of her day getting ready for holiday festivities. Today, the whole Internet knows that it's her special day.Happy Birthday!

I did it again... kept the "invitation" in my backpack instead of giving it away. I am talking about the invitation Hope Chapel handed out a couple of weeks ago for us to give-away. It's still in my backpack. I need to mail it out or give it away now....This got me thinking.. when I invite someone who is reluctant about coming to church, what would I say to them to convince them to come? Well... let's see... What are some of the reasons they should come?1. Delicious Pupus and Dessert - I'm talking home made desserts and awesome pupus like sushi, bree cheese fresh baked with a croissant, ham, etc. etc. Hope Chapel always have a delicious spread of food on Christmas eve. Free food - that's a good start.... like what the say "the best way to a man's heart is through his stomach" :)2. For Moms of little kids we offer free childcare. Moms, it's peace and quite for a couple of hours! The childcare and Sunday School facility at Hope Chapel is exceptional. You've got to see it to
Let me give you a peek into what my life has been like on December 24 for the past few years.
Early in the morning Mom puts the ham in the oven. We make sure all the presents are wrapped, tagged, sorted and the ones for my mom’s family are loaded in the van. The rest of the day time consists of hanging out at my mom’s house keeping Princess occupied. Then the magical early afternoon hour hits where we need to start getting ready for church.
We shower and dress and then rush off to church early enough to get a parking space and a seat. Mass commences, we pray and sing then as soon as the last note of the recessional hymn sounds we stuff ourselves into our coats and rush out to the car hopping to escape the parking lot before the other 400 cars trying to leave by the one parking lot exit turns into the equivalent of downtown Boston during rush hour. By 6 PM on Christmas Eve our Christmas obligation has been satisfied, squeezed into the busy schedule of food and presents.
Since our little family (family being me, him and our dogs) aren’t celebrating Christmas together, we had our Christmas Eve yesterday. We did some quick shopping (I still have three presents left) before we took the dogs on a trip in the woods. We made dinner when we came home and had a lovely meal. The dogs relaxed infront of the fireplace Then we opened the presents and watched a movie. I fell asleep though..
We’re having my old classmates over today, which will be super fun cause it’s a long time since I’ve seen them all.
Oh, and Rora loves the Christmas tree
Dave tends to hibernate during the winter every year. He's at the greatest loss, since he's among those unfortunate guys who doesn't get the true essence of festive even though they get enough opportunities. Christmas eve is not for these guys. The fact is that this is the best time of the year to meet new people, make new friends and embark on new relationships. Chances are you are going to be invited to a lot of Christmas parties. If you are single, the Christmas parties and New year parties are the best places to find the most lovable and romantic dates. And, believe me, picking the best out of the lot is not a big deal. Because moods are festive and hearts are filled with the joyful spirit of Christmas. If you are heading out to a Christmas party and are excited about picking up someone, all you need to remember are some simple tips.Don't try to impress him or her: It doesn't really work if you try to impress him or her. Let him or her notice you . Stop trying impress him or
By: Elmo Kandel You don't often think to play games on Christmas Eve, but playing a game or two can be a lot of fun.One fun game is ideally suited for anxious children, but could also be for adults, if you want to add some fun for gift giving. For children, this is a way to make that "open one gift on Christmas Eve" rule a little more exciting and make it last a little longer. You create a hunt with clues, so the children have to follow the clues to find their gift. Instead of the gift being under the tree, for example, you might put it somewhere else, but the children will follow clues to find it. For this game, you can use anything to write your clues on. You could use Christmas cards in their envelopes that you had extras of, you might cut out Christmas tree shapes for this, or you might want to use ornaments. Whichever method you choose, write a clue on each of your items and leave those around the house. You start by handing each child the first clue. It might say, "you sleep here
It's Christmas Eve and what better thing to do than go paddling and avoid all the mad rush at the shops and supermarkets. So it was an hour until mid-day and we parked up in the Halton Trainstation car park to be greeted by a cold winters day, with a little breeze. Getting changed was a bit unpleasent with temperatures just above freezing. Once on the water I warmed up quickly; even after having a couple of rolls. The river was quite low today and even in low levels there is usually something to do on the rapids, but I don't know what it was but I just couldn't get anything going and everything just felt mechanical and unsmooth. Strokes weren't really linking into each other and I just got a bit frustrated and it just got worse and worse. I think I could have been slightly off form because over the past three days I've only had about ten hours sleep, as we've been calling in on people most nights to do our Christmas duties, and I'm knackered.I should be back out on the water
Friends of Arkansas Tonight...
Some three years have passed since I first started the "Arkansas Tonight" radio program. In that time, we've had an uncountable number of guests, several producers, been on a couple of terrestrial and internet stations, and finally found our home on KFAY-AM in Fayetteville. This website also started as part of that effort. I'd have to say that it has always been a challenge to keep both the program and the show up-to-date. Sometimes we've done very well, other times we've performed at a snail's pace. But it has been rewarding. So, it's a little tough for me to tell both listeners and readers this news -- the "Arkansas Tonight" radio show will cease production, and probably broadcast as of the end of this month. The website will remain active, and dedicated to commentary and news about Arkansas and the nation, that much I can promise.
The decision was a difficult one to make. I've decided to resume my career in local television (on the

My Baby Girl Turns 8 TodayToday, my youngest daughter turned 8. She is a Jewish girl with a Christmas Eve birthday. As is our tradition, we begin the celebration the night before. She asked for a chocolate ice cream cake with Hershey Kisses. We eased the "8" candle into the frosting and added two extra candles. One for my darling girl to grow on. One as a way for her to honor her first mother, her Korean mother. "Before you make a wish for you, make a special wish to her because she is thinking of you, too."Unlike my son who is my deep thinker and often ponders the circumstances of his Korean family and his adoption, my little girl lives very much in the present. She is the ultimate believer in "Be Here Now." I wait for the big questions, but they don't seem to be much on her mind. I gently encourage the big questions with books or teachable moments from TV, but nope, just not on her mind. How different our children are as they find their respective paths to self and self-awareness.
