Who knew it would be such a pleasure to hear Alan Sparhawk-- master of minimalist pop-- rock out with his cock out? Sure, the last two Low albums had downright loud moments, and there's that bluesy side project the Black Eyed Snakes that Sparhawk had a few years back. But on the Retribution Gospel Choir album, the dude channels his inner Crazy Horse with dark dirge-y anthems. He even curses and

It's always exciting to talk to people who are already on our side, understand our topic and are motivated to learn more. There's a sense of connectedness and synchronicity, but sometimes it doesn't feel like there's as much significance in speaking to this kind of group, because they already "get it." We call this "preaching to the choir," and it's frequently seen as a less desirable pursuit than
We had a fun, but mostly uneventful weekend. Saturday we... well we... honesty I can't remember what we did. That shows how much fun we had. I think we made a trip to Wal-Mart, and played outside a little. Nothing too exciting. Sunday was much more fun.
Sunday after church Deidre, and the other kids in the children's choir, sang at a local assisted living home. We had a great time, and the

I don't expect to be traveling to Vienna anytime in the near future. I truly never expected to ever see the Vienna Boys Choir. So you can imagine how happy I was when Mary asked me to come with her and Randy to see them perform here on the island. So last night we journeyed to the South Whidbey High School to see The Vienna Boys Choir. Dan watched the shop and had a terrific night of music here too.
Randy and I were talking about seeing this Walt Disney program in the 60's about the Vienna Boys Choir. It is called "Almost Angels". It was a truly captivating show (must have been since I was younger than 11 years of age when I saw it and thirty some odd years later I still remember it.)
Anyway it was fun to see boys perform the caliber of music these boys performed. WOW!!It was even

The concept of the world's first choir boy band came to light back in 2005 when Universal Records began auditions across the country with the premise of plugging a gap in the market. Thankfully this process didn't deteriorate into a shambolic X-Factor type affair and from the thousands of youngsters that managed to roll out of bed and get to the event on time, three Aled Jones wannabes were chosen, those being Ben, Patrick and CJ. The trio's debut album managed to sell 500,000 copies and hit the number one spot in the classical charts.
As with most things though it didn't last and eighteen months in the vocal life of certain choir boys came in to question. With raging hormones the vocal capacity of a pubescent teen can prove critical hence the new line up that presents itself here with the release of this season's new album entitled 'The Carols Album'. Ben, Patrick and CJ have been replaced with Bill, Andrew and William and the stuffy image of old is replaced with a new, u
I wasn't really sure how Maritime could get much better and didn't know how the band could possibly top last year's excellent album We The Vehicles. The answer is that on their new record, Heresy And The Hotel Choir, Maritime is at the top of their game. They sound more cohesive than ever and not just like a vehicle for Davey Von Bohlen's supremely sweet songs. All truth be told (however), I said the same exact thing about We The Vehicles and somehow it is true in both cases. Being a huge fan of Davey's previous band (The Promise Ring) as well as former bassist Eric Axelson's (The Dismemberment Plan), Maritime has been on my radar since their inception. Their first album Glass Floor sounded like a band searching for an identity, while (as stated) last year's We The Vehicles was leaps and bounds better. Heresy And The Hotel Choir isn't a huge leap forward for the band, but (rather) a refinement of their brisk but sunny sound. The new album is filled from start to finish w
Welcome to the first ever “music you should be listening to post”. This one is a doozy.
THE CHOIR: 1985-present
If you haven’t heard of them you may be aware of some of the projects they have worked on. Drummer and lead singer were both involved and creators of City on a Hill projects. They are also in the Lost dogs.
The choir is one of the greatest and long standing Christian bands of all time. They were huge back in the 80’s and they even to this day keep reinventing themselves. They are one of the most influential unsung heroes in christian rock. They have a U2 kinda feel and came out around the same time. Airy guitars with killer delay, amazing bass lines, a drummer that tells a story with his instrument, and a guy who plays a midi control woodwind. I have seen them in concert about 5 times and I consider them 1 of the top 2 bands of all time.
If you haven’t checked them out there are many CD’s to choose from and they are all amazing.

This indie pop band, once a trio, now sporting four members, are back and are prepping their third full length album. The band was originally formed out of the remains of The Dismemberment Plan and The Promise Ring and seem to have found the right amount of cohesiveness to succeed together. Maritime’s last album, We The Vehicles, was a underrated gem back in 2006 and I am hoping for another one out of their upcoming release.
The new album will be titled Heresy and the Hotel Choir and hits stores on October 16th. The new one will be their second release on the excellent Flameshovel Records label also. Here are two songs from the new album to get you excited, and one from We The Vehicles as well just for good measure.

The ACLU, along with a number of other organizations, held a rally in Washington, D.C. Tuesday to protest against torture and for the restoration of habeas corpus. There were 17 speakers, and many people visited their representatives’ offices after. For Dennis Kucinich and Chris Dodd, two of the speakers, maybe it was a chance to give a two-minute speech and get a little more support (actually, Kucinich already seemed to have the support of a lot of people there, preaching to his own choir; Dodd was met with less enthusiasm, speaking to people who didn’t seem real likely to vote for him anyway). For those of us who got up around two in the morning to get on a bus and go down there, it was in many ways more pointless.
First, the choir. Everyone but the two bicycle cops apparently assigned to the rally was certain to already oppose torture and support habeas. An hour and a half of speeches might reinforce that a little bit, but for 99.9% of the people there it would be like w

This is from NASA Watch and raises some good questions. NASA can offer significant benefits to communities. Ask anyone at Pensacola, Florida about whether NASA is a good thing. And of course the same can be said for many other areas of the country. When I was a kid the Mira Loma Space Center (about 9 miles from where I sit) was a very busy clearinghouse for NASAs space hardware. I went there several times on field trips to see the magnificent rocketry hardware there. Granted for the last 20 or so years it has mostly been a run down trucking hub for the local area. But recently it had a major renovation and is now the home of many small businesses and general light industry. And they still proudly wear the name Mira Loma Space Center. This sort of history ,and yes I would even call it heritage, should be talked about by NASA representatives. But I think the problem is two fold. NASA has become a huge governmental bureaucracy. Government bureaucracies can seldom sell themselves wel
I just have to laugh at this. I have heard Handel's Messiah performed before but never quite like this. I wonder if Handel is rolling in his grave knowing that this was done to his work. How many hours of practice did it take for them to do this? Tags: handel, messiah, youtube, video, videorambler
Mallory and I went to Kayley’s choir concert, along with my parents, on Thursday night. It sure brought back memories for me and my folks - they sat through many a performance when I was in school, since I was in choir from 6th through 10th grades! I know most of you won’t be interested in this - but maybe some of you who know Kayley will - here is her group. They’re first year singers, and I thought they did a pretty decent job! Here’s one of the songs they did. I was impressed that they learned a whole song in Spanish! Of course, they probably have no idea what they’re singing about, but still:
Now here’s what surprised me. This is the 8th grade choir, and it’s a group you actually have to audition for. That alone, along with the fact that you expect the higher grade to sound better than the lower grades, simply because they’re more mature and have more singing experience, made me think they were really going to wow us. They didn&rsqu
This past week, Picthfork posted Dan Deacon’s song “The Crystal Cat” and I have been listening to it over and over and over again on my computer at work and even legally downloaded it from itunes so that I can work out to it.Dan will be going on tour this spring and summer, begging tonight in Greensboro, NC and ending in Chicago at the Picthfork festival (hmmm…could that be why they are on the playlist?). Since I am an avid groupie/stalker of all musical acts I am even marginally impressed by, I decided to check out when he would be coming to New York and discovered what might just be the best marketing ploy ever: Fans are invited to sing with Dan (or at least the first four to respond that is)!Apparently this idea came to Dan in a dream were he was joined by an angelic choir on stage to sing "Wham City" from his recently released Spiderman of the Rings - a musical tribute to his place of dwelling and to the Baltimore music community he is a part of. TSo here is the deal:1) See
Some Idols are known for their singing ability. Other Idols are known for their hair. And one Idol became known for her legs. In the American Idol top eight performance show, Simon Cowell suggested that Haley Scarnato was using a tactic of wearing as little clothing as possible to stay in the competition. Of course, Simon Cowell’s accusation came up repeatedly in a recent media conference call with Haley ScarnatoWhen asked if Simon’s comments that focused more on what she had on rather than her voice bothered her, Haley Scarnato said “A little bit. They always say this is a singing competition, etc., but it is what it is. You just have to brush it off and do the best that you can do.”When asked if not responding to Simon’s comments was the right decision, Haley said “That’s who I am. I’m on national TV and I don’t want anybody to think – I still want to stay on that frame of mind of, you’ve got to respect him. He’s Simon Cowell, and you’ve got to set a

Church feuds are not uncommon. But when the pastor and choir director get into it, stand aside. One week our pastor decided to press his position by preaching on commitment, and how we should dedicate ourselves to service. That Sunday, the choir director led the choir in singing, 'I Shall Not Be Moved.' The next Sunday, the pastor preached on giving and how we should gladly give to the work of the Lord. The choir director then led the song, 'Jesus Paid It All.' The next Sunday, the pastor preached on gossiping and how we should watch our tongues. The hymn was 'I Love To Tell The Story.' The pastor became disgusted over the situation, and the next Sunday he told the congregation he was considering resigning. The choir then sang 'Oh, Why Not Tonight.' After the pastor resigned the next week, he preached his last sermon at the church telling the congregation that Jesus had led him there and Jesus was taking him away. The choir then sang, 'What A Friend We Have in Jesus.'

As promised by "Tinkerbell" in her post yesterday, I've posted two demo tracks by new and highly interesting Danish constellation Oliver North Boy Choir. I strongly suggest that you read the aforementioned post, but if you haven't done so already, I can inform you that the trio consists of Mikkel Max Hansen (EPO-555), Camilla Florentz (Ex EPO-555) and Ivan Petersen (? but he's "playing the instruments"). For obvious reasons the band follows nicely in the footsteps of EPO-555 (both musically and vocally, without being a rip-off), and the music (described as "indiepop and melancholy) should appeal to all fans of Dexter Fox (the EPO-555 debut). I've had the privilege of listening to three more tracks by the band (they won't be posted here), and they are even better than the ones below! The band has been signed to Danish label Crunchy Frog and accordingly ONBC will be a singles band only, though we can always hope that they'll alter that decision!!!+ Albertino+ Something New

Right now my multimedia player is busy entertaining me with the ” Vienna Boys Choir Goes Pop album ” . Trough I am into tremble music , I guess my taste is still not refined enough or on the opposite it is just very personal as I prefer to listen to more pop and rock sound than classy choir music - which is probably one of the reasons for me to like this specific album of the Vienna Boys Choir more than the other their releases and performances I have heard until now. My opinion is that the choir music would have been much more popular if there were more project with modern sound - not like disco and techno ( actually why not ) , but combined with some other style - like Libera did. It is hard to choose a favorite song - favorites will be easier : Supreme , All you need is love ,Nothing else matters and Get down !

There is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and then there is the rest of us. For regular Sunday church meetings, we Mormons don't rely on any fancy-schmanzy professional choir to transport our spirits to ethereal heights. There are no professional choristers or organists to accompany us in our plain chapels. And we never practice a song with the whole group before performing. And these are some of the many reasons why my church choir stinks.Let me preface this by saying that I dearly love my church choir and wouldn't change a thing about it. That being said, we do have certain eccentricities that outsiders may scorn. For example, anyone who accidentally stumbles through the door to our practice room is guilt-tripped into participating in our rag-tag choir. As far as I know, no Mormon has ever been denied a spot in choir, although I've had serious doubts as to the integrity of this method during performances I've winced through in the past. But hey, it's not about talent, it's ab
