We were going to just mention D’asse because of its odd name, but I was most amused when I actually found a box to taste! This is why I love living in a neighborhood with some great Asian supermarkets. You never know what gems you might find - and at $2 for a box, this one was a bargain!
Strictly speaking, D’asses is not really a chocolate or a candy. Made by the Crown company in Korea, it’s two very thin, airy wafers which sandwich a thin layer of flavored cream. I picked up a coffee flavored version and it was awesome. Lovely texture, nice coffee-ish flavor without being overbearing, and truly delicious.
The only drawback is the packaging - like a lot of Asian products, the D’asses are separately wrapped in foil envelopes, complete with diagram on how to open it. One of my favorite discoveries at the Chocolate Show this year is the California-based chocolatier Charles Chocolates. They’re located in Berkley, California where they produce all their extremely tasty confections. I met the founder and head chocolatier at the Chocolate Show, Chuck Siegel, who is an extremely enthusiastic and committed fellow. He loves to create chocolate and sweets and you can taste it in his work.
While at the show I was able to taste only some of what Charles Chocolates has to offer. I was very interested to try the Pate De Fruit and some of the nut confections that they produce, since I’ve only heard fantastic things about them. With all the buzz about the increasing health benefits of dark chocolate recently, it’s only natural that the big guys cash in on the trend. Mars, which owns the fast growing brand Dove, has released new bars that cover the dark chocolate and single origin trends.
A few things to note before I move onto how they taste. Firstly, in order for a chocolate to be called “dark” here in the United States, it has to have at least 35% cocoa solids. So, as Dove sees it, if 35% is dark then 63% must be extra dark. I wonder who they think they’re fooling. Secondly, the “single origin” beans they’re using come from the Forastero cacao bean. Forastero is the least flavorful cacao bean there is and it’s used more for bulk processing of chocolate. So right away, I’m skeptical of this line of chocolate.
Now, all my chocolate snobbery aside, I actually was pleased with this chocolate. Even though it’s nothing to compare to Guittard, El Rey,
Cole and I are like Santa's elves this year. I love making things with him. It took me a while to find my feet and confidence as a Mum - I didn't find it easy to play games like football or just much about and be silly (although I have to say, I've gotten MUCH better with practice!) But one of the things I've always enjoyed doing with Cole is making things and Cole is always working away on something that it's a lovely thing that we both enjoy doing together.

I was recently sent a box full of treats from Sweet Earth Chocolates, a California-based chocolate company that prides itself on selling organic, fair-trade treats. A portion of Sweet Earth’s profits go to support Project Hope and Fairness, a non-profit organization that supports cocoa farmers in Africa by promoting sustainability, agricultural education, and fair-trade practices.
The package that Sweet Earth sent included this info, as well as beautifully wrapped chocolate bars, clusters, and peanut butter cups.
Chocolate Bars
The two chocolate bars I sampled were the Peppermint Crunch bar and the Organic Bittersweet Chocolate bar.
The Peppermint Crunch bar is quite good - there are strong peppermint undertones, thanks to the addition of real peppermint oil, which gives the candy a robust flavor and scent. Unless you’re a dark chocolate lover, this may not be the bar for you, as the chocolate itself is 65% bittersweet and has a very strong taste.

One of the many nice things about attending the Chocolate Show was the opportunity to familiarize myself with all the chocolatiers to which I normally don’t have access. One of the gems I found was Christopher Norman Chocolates. Despite the fact that I can somewhat easily travel to New York City, I’ve never made it to the area where their factory and shop are located.
