Nothing special in particular about this post. I just wanna know who is going back to Malaysia during the Chinese New Year on 26th January. This is because I will be going back to Malaysia on MAS flight on 24th January 2009 at 10am morning flight and will arrive KL on 25th January at 7.10am. The flight will fly from London to KL and I will come back here on 7th February at late evening flight at
On the first day of Chinese New Year, it's time for the ancient custom called hong bao or ang-pow: the giving of red packets. This involves married couples giving children and unmarried adults money stuffed into red envelopes. Another tradition, which seems to be practiced more in Malaysia than other countries, is yee sang. This revolves around a colourful dish of raw fish that involves all diners
Living in Malaysia, I am used to celebrating different festivals for different races and believes. It's great to be able to live in a multi racial- multi cultural society. I'd like to dedicate this post to talk about one of the most celebrated festivals in Malaysia- Chinese New Year which was just celebrated last February. I'll also write about the other major festivals when the time comes...:) Ch
It is the fourth year that the twins are celebrating their Chinese New Year(CNY). But this year, at nearly three and a half years old, is supposingly the year where they began to be more aware and "conscious" of the real happenings around them. It was quite a good start, with their pre-school teaching them some CNY songs, and the twins were singing days long before the first day ("Cu Yi") of CNY. On CNY eve, we had reunion dinner with the twins' paternal grandparents and their 3 uncles plus families. They both receive the first CNY red packets ("Ang Pow") from their grandfather during the dinner. After reunion dinner, we went to pray at the Waterloo Street's Kwan Yin Temple, near my parents' place. (See Pic) Later the twins visited my parents with whom they also met their uncle and auntie
Chinese New Year Celebration is based on the start of the Lunar Year. As the year starts, there are a lot of activities Chinese practice to welcome the year with ,luck, fortune and prosperity.
Back in China, there were a lot of temple fairs and fireworks during Chinese New Year’s Eve. Scheduled huge fireworks were [...]
Finally I have some time to write down bit and bits of my Chinese New Year celebration. Don't know next year will I have a chance to have reunion dinner with my family or I need to celebrate with my bf family :(Why I called them Dinners? because there are not only 1 dinner, but more then that.First is my family dinner. Where we have that it at the Chinese New YEar eve. All these years, we will invite my uncle (my dad's younger brother) to join us for renunion dinner as they are only 3 members of them at their family. It will be lonely for them. For us, we are OK, because my parents have 4 of us. So total of people we have = 9.Its as usual, steambot dinner. With things that we love, like sea cucumber, squids, bird eggs...The fun part is when the steamboat cover open, all of us will rush and
17 February 2008Today the Istana was open to all Grassroots leaders for a Chinese New Year Garden Party in conjunction with Chinese New Year (of course). Faizah's Father gave us a ride to the Istana, since we both live in the same block.Traffic police lined the road leading to the Istana. We were fortunate to be allowed to drop off there since it's double-zigzagged yellow lined road. We came early as we had a RC dinner later in the evening. However, we were not allowed entry since our MPs wouldn't be here yet. Anyhow, we went to Plaza Singapura for a cup of Mocha Frappucino at Starbucks. We chatted for a while with most part talking about her life teaching in Bedok North Secondary School. When time came, we queued up at Istana for security clearance and then boarded the shuttle bus.A sympho

*No picture display on this post* to support my today’s content. I just want to write what I had done for 4 days of Chinese New Year. This year is special because I celebrated with my family at KL for the first time.

Phew !! Not had much time to post lately, but just to break the trend here are 3 ATC's I did to celebrate Chinese New Year. The 'Year of the Rat' on 7th - 9th February 2008. I was lucky enough to be in Hong Kong at the time and it was truly amazing.
Heralding towards a new year on the lunar calendar...Early morning climbed out of bed and instantly felt the atmosphere refreshing. After reading some course materials, I left for school. The usual crowds and buzz were not in NUS today. Had a very easy time (as well as good spot) to park the vehicle.A lecture must be worth attending to warrant my travelling from the East to the West on a Chinese New Year's Eve. And indeed it is. Prof Hussin Mutalib never failed to entertain the students with his 1)unique poshy accent; 2)self-glorifying professions; 3)lame rhetorics. For someone who had taught the subject for more than 2 decades, he must have some substance. Singapore politics, while it already is intriguing, has become even more exciting and interesting.I was glad to receive an invitation
First of all, a very happy chinese new year to all of you :) But i guess the festive spirit somehow did not spread to the markets. For the Dow Jones Industrial Average, it broke out of it's rising bearish wedge formation and it closed with a shaven black candlestick with heavy volume. It is expected as it failed to broke through the resistance level that was highlighted in my previous posts. The next support level is likely to be at around 11620. This also register as another time where the Dow Jones failed to make a higher high.Dow Jones Industrial Average:For the Straits Times Index, it opened with a huge gap downwards below the psychological support level of 3000 easily despite STI opening only for half a day today. Next likely area of support is 2744.Straits Times Index:Cosco Corp seems

With the hype that holidays usually bring, people always have the tendency to buy more and spend more without taking into account the consequences that their actions can bring.
Hence, it does not necessarily mean that because it is the holidays you have all the reason in this world to buy whatever you want and spend how much you want. Some people contend that it’s just once a year, so better
Chinese New Year or Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called the Lantern festival.
According to legend, in ancient China, the [...]
What timing! The rally was inline with the upcoming Chinese New Year! :D Now that we have 1.5 days before we close for CNY holidays, i am considering a hedge for my longs.I shorted Chartered last Friday right before closing. It was a powerful rally in late afternoon and we close the week stronger. It has always been my plan to hold longs and go short one at least 1 downtrending stock. This is because I am still not sure we are out of the woods. I expect another test to the downside after the holidays hence as soon as I see weakness in my long positions, i will take my profit and add to my short positions. The rationale being, if market is to go down from here, there are 2 possibilities.A) We achieve a higher low and selling will be well absorbed and I can square off my shorts and turn long
Hi,It has been two weeks since last update. The temperature in Hong Kong has been around 11 with cloudy sky and occasional showers for a week. It is my excuse for not updating the blog because I don't want to move in cold weather.I have to say Happy Chinese New Year to all of you!!!The cold weather just matches the the festival atmosphere of Chinese New Year. Most Chinese people think that cold weather is more like a Chinese New Year.Chinese New Year will be on 7th Feb (Thursday). Usually, there will be 3 consecutive public holidays for the first three new year days. Traditionally, Chinese people visit their relatives and friends for celebration. Childrens and unmarried youngsters are very happy because they can receive RED POCKETS from their parents, relatives and married friends.Giving R
Another week, another post. Work this week was pretty cool, and subbing is a lot of fun. Every class in every school seems to have one or two or three Korean students. I was able to talk about my experience in Korea in a few classes, giving examples of the differences in life between our two countries (EG, not being able to buy certain things--deodorant; expensive fruit, etc)This weekend I had some family come over from Victoria to celebrate a few birthdays (my little cousin and grandma). It was also a pre-Chinese New Year celebration at the same time. So what happens when you get family together in Richmond? If you guessed a big dinner at a seafood restaurant, you're right!Tonight we went for dinner at Imperial Court, in the Staples plaza off No.3 road. It was a set menu that included a l
Yeh! Weekend is here again and it is going to be a busy weekend. First, Chinese New Year is just around the corner and I shall be on leave beginning Monday. Tomorrow, first thing first, shopping at Beaulevard....oh well not that I have not been looking but I still need to find and buy few more clothes for the new year. Been to the Spring, but didn't see anything I like. Maybe I should just check
The Pussy Willow is a symbol of peace and harmony. I love the furry flowers when they are opened.
In another week’s time will be Chinese New Year. I have not started spring cleaning! My house is so messy! I ought to stop work soon and start working on my house.

From my previous post, I have posted we adopt 2 children from World Vision. Mine is from Mongolia and Ts is from China. I have sent my kid a christmas card during christmas, but not for TS child. So he keep on bugging me, when I am going to send his child a present? Aiya~ that is your child, why am I the one that is writting to your child? I seems like a secretary to TS.He ask me to sent her color pensel's, as my house still have a brand new 12 color pensels, but she is only 4 years old, I think crayon will be more suitable for her. After some shopping, finally got this Hello Kitty coloring book for her. The hello kitty seems like very big and more suitable for crayon coloring. As she looks very tomboy on her picture, TS wish her to be a bit girlish. So here we go, the Hello Kitty coloring

by: ARA (ARA) - If you went to China to ring in the new year, you’d be overwhelmed by a frenzy of family, festivities, food and fireworks! On Jan. 22, as the Chinese say goodbye to the Year of the Ram, you can bring a little bit of China into your home by celebrating the beginning of the Year of the Monkey. A vivacious, inquisitive creature, the monkey indicates that the new year will be full of passion, liveliness and prosperity! Chinese New Year festivities are just as dynamic and spirited as the monkey and are a traditional part of ancient Chinese culture. Bring Chinese New Year joy into the lives of your friends and family with time-honored cooking, colorful decorations and activities for everyone. Get colorful! Red and gold are traditional symbols of luck and prosperity. Red also frightens away evil spirits and keeps them from creeping into the new year. Nian is the new year monster known in China for terrorizing children around the new moon and is easily frightened by loud mus
Only ten days late but Mr Hopgood, my teacher, got his dates mixed up on the class calendar. We spent the day making Chinese lanterns, paper masks, cooking and eating noodles and writing the word Fu for Good Luck on a banner. I made a really good dragon mask with red and gold paint. This year is the Year of the Boar or Pig. Boars are reliable and honest but a bit boring.I heard Lennox the Bully whisper to Ryan Thompson that there was probably a thirteenth Year of the Geek for people like me. Ditto. There should be a Year of the Thug for people like Lennox!I was born in 1996. I am a Rat. I am charming, cultured and a good writer.Miv is a Rooster. She is outspoken and proud.Mum is a Sheep. She is artistic and a worrier. Mum works in insurance how can that be artistic?I don't know what Year Dad is. I forgot what year he was born. Come to that I can't remember his birthday either. I will have to ask Miv in case I miss it.Fat Bob is a Monkey. Mum bought him three years ago. Monkeys are supp
The wife and I went for a last minute shopping at food centre on New North Road, Auckland, yesterday (Chinese New Year Eve). Whiel waiting for my wife, I took some picture of our pet, Skippy (see below and click on pic to get a bigger view)Since the evening sky was so beautiful, I took some picture with my Nikoa Coolpix 7600. Suddenly came from nowhere a car park guard approached me and questioned me. "What are you doing? Do you know the regulations?" He looks sloppy in his messy uniform, physically he is very "tiny". He can't speak proper English (that is why he work as a guard, I guess). He is not Asian nor European, but he doesn't shave and needs major dental work done for sure.He assumed that he can pick on any one who looks Asian and have some fun. It is easy to deal with people like this. The trick is look him in the eyes, talk like his superior or manager and you will see his tail hide between his leg immediately. When he asked me the "tough" questions, I simply answer h
There are many legends that are part of the Chinese culture. Many of them exemplify moral lessons, not so different from Aesop and his fables. One story in particular I've always enjoyed is the story of Chinese New Years. There are a few variations to this story but this is the one my parents told me when I was younger.Long ago in the mountains, there lived a horrible demon creature named Nian. Every year, on the first day of the year, the creature would awaken and descend upon the village. He would eat all the grain and livestock. And if there were any unfortunately children stuck outside, they would disappear. The villagers lived in fear of this beast and boarded up their houses on this night to protect their families. One year, right before this event was to occur, an old man visited the village. He turned to the villagers and asked, "Why do you fear this creature such? You are many and he is but one. Surely he could not swallow all of you."But the villagers remained skeptical and l

Well, I'm not going into too much details about Chinese New Year since I already wrote abit in the previous entry.
Just a hint, if you're not married, you get "hong baos". If you are married, start preparing to give them out to someone like ME! LoLx~
Anyway, let me take you on a tour to see the decorations done at OBTECH!
When you walk up to our doorstep, immediately you'd see...

As a Chinese-Indonesian whose family still observes tradition, Chinese New Year celebrations have always been an integral and recurring part of my life. Even the ban on Chinese cultural references during Soeharto's reign did not prevent us from celebrating. To be sure, the ban did not truly extend to Chinese New Year celebrations in private homes (or else we would have been caught and prosecuted many times over). However, it did make the celebrations less public than in other places with an ethnic Chinese population. Chinese New Year is a major occasion and preparations in the lead up to it can be quite long. Months before the actual event, my mother has already bought the necessary ingredients to cook for the dinner on New Year's Eve. This dinner is an important part of Chinese New Year, as every member of the family attends. My home happens to be the dinner's venue as my paternal grandmother lives with us and my father is her eldest son.

On the dates February 17-19th, Koreans will be celebrating Seollal, or Lunar New Year's Day. This is one of the most significant Korean holidays, the other being Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). This is a time when Koreans make a journey back to their parents' homes and also pay respects to their ancestors. This results in a mass migration of people all over the country, which can make for
I didn't manage to finish all my cleaning before Chinese New Year. But at least the place is clean and neat enough to receive visitors. My younger sister came yesterday afternoon with her boyfriend and 爸爸's mahjong kakis came over for their annual mahjong session (currently still in battle as I type!!) hahaha ... I'm expecting my classmates this coming Saturday for a gathering at my place. So I got to maintain current condition of the house *bleh*Anyway, we were out visiting for the past 2 days. It was really tiring for all of us. Travelling from one place to another with 2 active kids! Phew! I'm just glad we didn't have that much relatives to visit. So, we can finally rest today. My only regret is I'm not able to take photographs of the kids with the grandparents because the kids, especially 妹妹, were always running about. Sigh! Even taking a family portrait is difficult. Can you imagine this is the only decent looking photograph we managed to take?! 爸爸 said he look
Following on from yesterdays festivities just wanted to say that the day continued to be beautiful and the crowds flocked to the procession and subsequently to Chinatown for the fireworks and for food. Just wanted to include a couple of pics which, I hope, convey the atmosphere. In all, what a great day !!
Pictures from our trip into the city to hang out and visit the flower market in Chinatown:

[Saturday, 17 February, 2007]The day began with dining with Weitat and Kailin at Geylang. We had our supper at Wang Jiao Dian Xin instead of You Tiao Da Wan for the latter shop was closed for the festival. Food was just alright but service was terrible. While we were walking back to the car park, my mum called and when she heard a girl's (Kailin's) voice besides me, she just assumed that was Vivi. At this moment I did not know how I should feel. I did tell my mum before we were through already but somehow she did not get it or she refused to get it. Perhaps, she did not get to see Vivi often since long ago and that was why she was used to it, like me, that she did not realise it was history already. Kailin drove me home and followed by Weitat. I was sleepy but energetic somehow, however, did not lead the route well enough that Kailin had to make a big round at Chinatown.I continued with the clicking of the "hug†website for Suimin, and that was very time-consuming and dull. My e
[Sunday, 18 February, 2007]Alone in the living room, that was how I spent my first moment of the Chinese New Year. I could not even be bothered to look at the television. My brothers each occupied a room while my mum started offering prayers to the heaven and then went to the temple. The bonus was the phone call from Suimin. It was fun to chat with girls who spoke English most of the time and had weird but sexy Chinese accent. Usually I would try my best to fool them into using Chinese. Nevertheless, it was good enough to chat with sweet girls. We did not chat for long again.I also received a greeting SMS from Sherry. How weird it could be for such a busy girl to do this? We used to chat a lot during the IRC days but time eventually got us separated. She moved on fast with the pace of this society but I was still straying and losing my way at the very beginning. Almost seven years of friendship and we had not taken any photo together, but I trusted her to keep her promise, unlike other
[Wednesday, 21 February, 2007]My second day of "bai nian†was actually at my father's side - at my small uncle's house which was located at Hougang.I spent the early morning doing my website and chatting with Suimin. I was expecting very little sleep because my mum would wake me up for the house visiting but I woke up at around 11am by myself. My elder brother was not even home from his soccer game yet and I almost thought we were not going out anymore. After my brother returned and his girlfriend came to join us before we left for Hougang.Through familiar paths, we were able to get there. The house was still as beautiful as two years ago; everything was well-kept. Atmosphere was good with all the jokes around and we did some catch up. The most entertaining part was when my eldest cousin came with her daughters, the kids started to play hide-and-seek. Kids were so naïve that they tended to forget who were the people they were supposed to search sometimes. One of my nieces was
[Monday, 19 February, 2007]The night went on as usual with blogging and updating of my websites into near dawn. I woke up at around 3pm then, which was a new record for so many donkey months.I played my game again in this really stupid New Year day when there was no house visiting or any other event. In the late evening, my mum wanted to go to the River Ang Bao again. Since she did not cook or buy anything, I had to accompany my whole family to go there. We dined at the Amara hotel's Burger King before proceeding to the bus-stop. The trip itself was shorter than the waiting time, which explained how long we had waited there. We did a few photo-taking before my mum started camping in front of the God of Wealth sculpture. By then my stomach started to play a prank with me and I had to rush to the toilet. The journey towards Cityhall MRT was as long as completing the Great Wall of China. The crowds were blocking my way and the waiting for the green man in front of the road seemed to freez
I don't know what had happened to make me say this but things turned out to be a little to quiet for me this Chinese New Year. What I've expected seems just vanished and things just have gone the other way. It is boring and dull but I can now look forward to my college life as I discovered that many will be going to Subang Jaya or Kuala Lumpur to further their studies.I visited a lot of houses this year as usual but the things I do is always the same... Small bets, enjoying my new I-Pod, chat about out future education and online at home. I can say I am doing the same thing over and over again. Well, I do see people have changed, in the way that they treat me. Some to my amaze are more caring but some I think their heart are starting to depart, not here anymore but somewhere else...maybe a more pleasant and serene place for them.People have changed in the short two or three months and I can accept it as things always change without being noticed. I can't accept changes before I went
