It has been known for a while that chimps are more evolved than humans - well, their genome has changed more than ours since our common ancestor - but recent studies have shown that chimps have outstanding numeracy abilities that outstrip our own in some cases.Sponsor for this week's show - GotoMeeting: Try GotoMeeting free for 30 days! Sooo… in battle of wits, scientists have shown that chimps kick college students’ collective ass. In a computer game, sort of like Simon and concentration but with numbers at the slow end chimps tied the students for accuracy but as the pressure mounted the chimps pwnd. Watch the videos. I dig this quote:

Sana Inoue and Tetsuro Matsuzawa of Kyoto University showed a
computer screen grid of nine numbers to six chimpanzees. The chimps
were previously trained to recognize the ascending nature of the
numbers. They were also shown to nine college students. When
subjects touched one of the numbers, all of the others vanished.
They then had to touch the squares in the order of the numbers that
used to be there.
When the numbers flashed for just four-tenths of a second or less,
one of the chimps beat all of the college students.

In the second time this week we've posted on simians being tested, chimpanzees outperformed humans in short term memory tests conducted at Kyoto University in Japan. If that wasn't bad enough, the chimps taunted the hapless students with lewd gestures afterwards. Of course, with their intelligence growing, you can't help but wonder if the chimps are slowly hatching their plans for world dominance. They can't do much of a worse job with this world than the humans did. And the only thing we would have to worry about is their world domination leading up to this piece of hammy acting:
In a study coming out of Leipzig, Germany, scientists concluded that "chimps choose more rationally than humans."However, after additional tests using different control groups, it became apparent that chimps do not in fact choose more rationally than humans, they merely choose more rationally than liberals.

Chimps: Who's Smarter? - TIME A new study, published Thursday in Science, makes a strong case that the second theory is the right one. A team of anthropologists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, developed a battery of learning tests they call the Primate Cognition Test Battery, and gave it to 106 chimps, 105 children and 32 orangutans, to compare the groups directly. Says Esther Hermann, a co-author of the paper: "It's the first time anything like this has been done."The three groups performed about equally well on "physical learning" — locating hidden objects, figuring out the source of a noise, understanding the concepts of more and less, using a stick to get something that's out of reach. And indeed, the kids were of an age — 2 1/2 years old — where it's widely known that they

I don't feel like writing serious stuff especially the revolution is just 72 hours Found: the giant lion-eating chimps of the magic forest | Conservation | Guardian Unlimited Environment This reminds me with my favorite Novel "Congo" I got the book and it is far more interesting than the film ,I found the novel in some Egyptian Bookstore specialized in selling English novels in Mohendessin ,I guess near Gamal Abd El-Nasser school But there were not huge chimps but Gorillas , I wonder if they will find King Solemn's mines too in Congo !!?? Already as far as I know Crichton used the old myths he read about the King Solemn's mines and those strong apes who kill other creatures If this proves anything it will prove that "History becomes a legend, legend becomes a myth" For years Scientist thought it was a legend but it turned to be true thing and yes here is the book from Amazon , take my advice if you live abroad and buy it , it is not an ad more it is a recommendation ,
An Austrian court is going to decide whether or not chimps should be afforded the same rights as humans. We’re not talking about animal rights here, we are talking about HUMAN RIGHTS.
I was just going to post the link to this article, but as I read it I just couldn’t resist commenting so here goes.
The case centres around money given to Matthew by a well-wisher to safeguard his future after the animal home where he lived went bust. Ms Stibbe and her lawyers say he should have the same rights as a child and have a guardian to help him spend it. Ms Stibbe said: “Matthew likes watching TV and videos and playing games like any child, and can use signs and gestures to say what he wants. Of course he has the right to be recognised as an individual.”
So it seems this case was originally brought about by money. People will try anything for a buck.
The experts pointed out that chimps differ from humans by only 1 per cent of their genetic material, can accept a blood tra
A British woman has applied to become the legal guardian of a chimp. Paula Stibbe, 38, claims primates are the same as people and should be treated as such by courts. But the tricky thing will come when you meet new people and say he's your kid. They won't know the backstory, and they'll just assume you have a very chimpy baby. They'll be forced into making nice comments, because that's what you have to do when you get shown someone's child."Oh, he very... interesting looking. And he's really come on with his banana peeling skills. Hmm, he takes after his dad."

Approximately 6 percent of human and chimp genes are unique to those species, report scientists from Indiana University Bloomington and three other institutions. The new estimate, reported in the inaugural issue of Public Library of Science ONE (December 2006), takes into account something other measures of genetic difference do not - the genes that aren't there.
That isn't to say the commonly reported 1.5 percent nucleotide-by-nucleotide difference between humans and chimps is wrong, said IUB computational biologist Matthew Hahn*, who led the research. IUB postdoctoral researcher Jeffery Demuth** is the paper's lead author.
"Both estimates are correct in their own way," Hahn said. "It depends on what you're asking. There isn't a single, standard estimate of variation that incorporates all the ways humans, chimps and other animals can be genetically different from each other."
By studying "gene families" - sets of genes in every organism's genome that are similar (or identical) b
This week on the Mr Science Show, we are tackling the topics of the space elevator, why chimpanzee males like older females, and why human females like tall men.Other voices heard are those of Matt Clarke and Jacqui Pfeffer (thanks guys).Marcwww.mrscienceshow.com
MSNBC has a fascinating report on recent archaeological finds suggesting that chimpanzees learned to use tools on their own instead of simply copying humans. It's pretty cool, so check it out. This discovery also comes on the heels of DNA research which suggests that chimps should be reclassified to the Homo genus, thereby doing away with the Pan genus. Read more here.Personally, I think this is an amazing find. I always wondered what it would have been like to live alongside another member of the homo genus, such as when early humans lived alongside Neanderthals. Now, it seems as though we've been living with some all along, and they've been starring in our commercials:
Not since Cornelius and Zira first touched down on earth on Planet of the Apes that chimps will once again grace the silver screen in years. There is so much bad publicity as of late on various sites about this movie. The movie is produced ...
